The one idea to remember

Flash and ambient are two separate exposures in one frame. Shutter speed controls the ambient; flash power controls the flash; aperture and ISO move both. Set the background first (shutter/ISO), then add the subject (flash power). And the two failures of direct flash — flat and hard — are fixed by two geometric moves: get the light off the lens axis and make the source bigger.

Bounce & diffuse: fixing flash without removing it (§11.4)

The one rule: expose for the ambient first, then add subtle fill — good fill is invisible. If the subject looks "flashed," turn it down (flash exposure compensation −1 to −2 stops, or low manual). Fill should whisper, not shout. This is the rare time a phone's LED or a pop-up flash earns its keep.
