The core ideas in one breath

  • Exposure = how much light reaches the sensor = how bright/dark the image is. Too much = overexposed (washed out); too little = underexposed (muddy).
  • A stop = a doubling or halving of light. The universal unit for all three controls. N stops = $2^N$× the light (3 stops = , not 3×).

The order of operations (how to set exposure)

  1. Ask: what is this shot about, technically? Depth of field? Motion? Neither?
  2. Set the priority control first: - Depth of field matters → set aperture (Aperture-priority, A/Av). - Motion matters → set shutter (Shutter-priority, S/Tv). - Neither is critical → low ISO, let the camera balance.
  3. Set ISO as low as the light allows.
  4. Adjust the remaining control until the meter reads correct.
  5. Check the histogram — make sure nothing important is clipped.
  6. Raise ISO last, only if steps 2–4 can't make a correct, sharp exposure.

Handheld shutter floor: keep shutter ≥ 1/(focal length) — 50mm → 1/50 s, 200mm → 1/200 s. Below ~1/60 s handheld, brace or use a tripod. Stabilization buys a few stops, not a license to ignore the rule.


Metering, compensation, histogram

  • The meter measures scene brightness and assumes it should average to middle grey — so it gets fooled by scenes that aren't average:
  • Bright scene (snow, sand, white wall) → meter underexposes → dull grey.
  • Dark scene (night, black backdrop, deep shade) → meter overexposes → washed-out grey + noise.
  • Exposure compensation overrides the meter in stops. Rule of thumb:

    White snow → add (+). Black cat → subtract (−). In Manual, you do this by setting the meter pointer to +1 / −2 instead of 0.

  • Metering modes: evaluative/matrix (smart, best default) · center-weighted · spot (reads a tiny area — use for a backlit face or spotlit subject).
  • The histogram is the only honest judge of exposure (the rear screen lies — it looks dark in sun, bright in a dark room).

  • Spike against the right wall = highlights clipped (blown to white, unrecoverable).
  • Spike against the left wall = shadows clipped (crushed to black, unrecoverable).

Each step in any row = ONE STOP = a doubling/halving of light.
A stop gained on one row can be given back on another → same brightness, different look.

Equivalent exposure example: f/8, 1/250 s, ISO 200 = f/2.8, 1/2000 s, ISO 200 (opened 3, sped up 3) = f/16, 1/60 s, ISO 200 (closed 2, slowed 2). Same brightness; different depth of field and motion.


Phone-only quick path

  • Aperture is fixed on most phones → control depth of field by getting closer and putting distance behind the subject; use Portrait mode for synthetic blur (watch fine edges — Chapter 23).
