What's wrong with this conversion? (seeing questions)

Q24. A reader converts a photo of a red flower against green leaves by sliding saturation to zero. In the result, the flower has nearly vanished into the leaves — there's no clear edge between them. Name the cause and the specific fix.

Q25. Here is a described conversion. Name the two things over-cooked and how you'd fix each:

  banding. A heavy brown sepia tone is obvious across the whole image — a viewer at the far side of
  the room can name it as "brown." The headland and foreground are nicely textured; the composition
  is strong; the exposure protected the highlights.

Q26. A portrait of a person with deep brown skin has been converted by sinking the orange and red channels hard for "drama." The subject's skin has gone dark and muddy, losing the form and texture of the face, and the eyes are hard to find. Two over-cooked things: (1) the sky — pulled too far with the blue channel until it banded and went blotchy; dial the blue channel back up until the sky is dark but smooth and detailed. (2) the toning — the sepia is nameable from across the room; halve it (and halve again) until the warmth is felt but not seen. Q26 — Model answer. Cause: sinking the orange and red channels hard drove the skin (which lives in those channels) down to a crushed, detail-less dark gray, losing the face's form. Fix: lift the orange and red channels enough that the skin regains luminosity, dimensionality, and texture — bright enough to show form, even if you still want a somewhat dramatic look. Fairness principle: judge the skin tones you actually have, and ensure darker skin keeps its detail and form rather than collapsing into shadow — good black-and-white skin across every tone is bright enough to show form and texture.
