Glossary

Every key term, with the chapter that first defines it. Terms are listed alphabetically.

A

AF-area mode — The setting that controls where in the frame autofocus looks for the subject: single-point (one placed point), zone/group (a small cluster), wide/auto-area (the whole frame), and subject-detection (faces, eyes, animals, vehicles). Distinct from the AF mode (AF-S vs. AF-C), which controls when it focuses. (Chapter 4)

Analogous colors — Three or four hues sitting next to each other on the wheel (e.g. yellow, yellow-orange, orange), all sharing a common warm or cool character. They produce serene, unified, natural images; nature is full of them (autumn forests, seascapes, deserts). (Chapter 7)

Anticipation — The core decisive-moment skill: reading a scene before the picture happens, predicting where and when the moment will occur, and getting the camera pointed, framed, focused, and exposed at that spot in advance, so that you are waiting for the moment rather than reacting to it; a four-step process — read the scene for a stage, predict the behavior, pre-position, then wait and shoot through the peak. Necessary because reaction time (≈0.2 s) plus camera lag make catching a true peak by reacting impossible; you can only be early to it. (Chapter 10)

Aperture — The adjustable opening inside a lens, formed by overlapping blades, that opens wider to let in more light and closes down to let in less; the first of the three exposure controls. Its creative side effect is depth of field — a wide opening gives a shallow, background-dissolving focus and a narrow opening gives deep, front-to-back sharpness. (Chapter 3)

Apparent size — How large a light source appears from the subject's point of view; the variable that governs softness. A source that is large or close appears big (soft light, gradual shadow edges); a source that is small or distant appears small (hard light, crisp shadow edges). Moving a softbox closer makes its light softer because it grows larger as the subject sees it. (Chapter 12)

Aspect ratio (platform) — The shape of the frame, expressed as the ratio of width to height, which different destinations display or forcibly crop to: 3:2 (the classic camera frame and most prints), 4:5 (the tall portrait feed post), 1:1 (the square), 9:16 (vertical full-screen — stories and reels), and 16:9 (widescreen). The practical rule: crop to the destination's aspect ratio deliberately, in your editor, so the platform never crops the image for you and cuts your composition with no regard for it. (Chapter 25)

Atmospheric perspective — The effect by which distant objects in a landscape turn paler, bluer, and lower in contrast because light scatters through more intervening air (Rayleigh scattering). Because we have all seen it our whole lives, the brain reads "bluer and paler = farther away," which is why placing warm color in front and cool behind makes a scene feel deeper. (Chapter 7)

Auto White Balance (AWB) — The default camera/phone mode that automatically guesses the neutral point of the current light; good for everyday shooting but prone to neutralizing colors a photographer wants to keep, such as the gold of a sunset. (Chapter 5)

Autofocus (AF) — The camera's system for driving the lens to make a chosen point sharp automatically; the photographer indicates where (by placing a focus point or tapping the screen) and the camera drives the lens until that spot is sharp. Governed by two choices: the AF mode (when it focuses) and the AF-area mode (where it looks). (Chapter 4)

Available light — The light already present in a scene (sunlight, window light, existing room light) that the photographer works with or chooses, as opposed to light the photographer adds with flash or studio lighting. (Chapter 1)

B

Back-button focus — A camera setup that moves the focusing job from the shutter button to a separate rear button (often AF-ON), so the thumb focuses and the finger only fires; lets the photographer focus once and recompose freely, hold for continuous tracking and release to lock, and never fire a frame while the lens is hunting. (Chapter 4)

Background light — A light aimed at the backdrop rather than at the subject, used to control the tone the background reads as (white, grey, or black), independently of the subject's exposure. A white seamless background reads grey unless lit separately, about 1.5–2 stops brighter than the subject, to read pure white. (Chapter 12)

Backlight — Light coming from behind the subject, toward the camera, rimming the subject's edges with a bright outline, making translucent things glow, and throwing the subject's front into shadow or silhouette; the most dramatic and most technically demanding direction. (Chapter 5)

Balance — The arrangement of visual weights so that a frame feels stable rather than tipping to one side; achieved through symmetry (equal weight on both sides) or asymmetry (different weights that cancel out).

Beauty dish — A shallow metal bowl with a small disc suspended in front of the flash so light bounces off the dish interior before reaching the subject, producing light between hard and soft — crisp enough to show facial structure, soft enough to flatter; the classic beauty/fashion look. (Chapter 12)

Black-and-white conversion — The deliberate process of translating a color image into monochrome by choosing the gray value that each color maps to, rather than letting one fixed desaturation formula decide; a great monochrome image is made, not subtracted. Channel mixer — The set of per-color controls (red, orange, yellow, green, aqua/cyan, blue, purple, magenta sliders) that determines how light or dark each color becomes in a black-and-white conversion; the digital equivalent of the colored contrast filters film photographers screwed onto their lenses. A filter (and slider) lightens its own color and darkens its complement. Dodging and burning — The technique of selectively lightening (dodging) and darkening (burning) specific areas of an image to guide the viewer's eye, deepen mood, and shape the light; the terms come from the wet darkroom (dodging blocked light from the paper to lighten an area; burning added light to darken one). Done digitally with a local-adjustment brush. Toning — The addition of a subtle color tint to a monochrome image (warming the highlights and/or cooling the shadows, or pushing the whole image toward a warm or cool cast), mimicking the casts of darkroom chemistry to add mood and cohesion; the rule is subtlety — felt, not seen. The classic recipe is warm highlights, cool shadows. Film grain (digital) — The deliberate addition of a controlled, film-like texture to a clean digital image (via a grain slider) to evoke the organic look of photographic film, give the picture tactile character, and gently mask minor noise; the amount should suit the picture and be judged at viewing size, not full zoom.

Blue hour — The short period of twilight just before sunrise and just after sunset (after golden hour, with the sun below the horizon) producing soft, even, cool-blue light; prized for cityscapes, where warm artificial lights glow against the deep-blue sky. (Chapter 5)

Bokeh — The aesthetic quality of the out-of-focus areas of an image (from the Japanese boke, "blur") — not the amount of blur but its character: how soft, smooth, or busy the background renders, and especially how out-of-focus points of light turn into soft discs or orbs. Largely a property of the lens. Distinct from depth of field, which is the amount that is blurred. (Chapter 4)

Bounce flash — Flash redirected off a ceiling or wall so that the lit patch of that surface — large and off the lens axis — becomes the effective light source, turning a small, hard, frontal flash into a large, soft, directional one; the biggest near-free quality upgrade available to on-camera flash. (Chapter 11)

Broad lighting — Lighting the side of the face turned toward the camera (the broader-looking side), which widens the face; useful for narrow faces. A choice about the camera angle relative to the lit side, independent of the pattern. (Chapter 12)

Bulb mode — A shutter setting (marked B or BULB, found past the camera's longest timed speed, usually 30 s) in which the shutter stays open for exactly as long as the release is held down, ending when it is released; the way to make exposures longer than the usual 30-second limit. The name is a fossil of pneumatic air-bulb shutter releases. (Chapter 21)

Burst (continuous drive) — A camera or phone mode that captures a rapid sequence of frames for as long as the shutter is held, letting the photographer pick the single best instant afterward; understood as a way to bracket time around an already-anticipated peak (right for fast, unpredictable action), never as a substitute for anticipation — it only starts when you start it, dulls timing if over-used, buries you in editing, and can miss a peak that falls between frames. (Chapter 10)

Butterfly lighting — (Also Paramount lighting.) The key placed directly in front of the subject and high, throwing light down the face so the nose casts a small symmetrical shadow directly beneath it and the cheekbones catch light from above. Glamorous and slimming; the classic beauty/fashion light, often paired with a reflector below the chin. (Chapter 12)

Buyout — A premium license (or transfer) in which the client acquires broad or total rights to use the images, priced well above a normal license because it forecloses the photographer's future income from them. (Chapter 35)

C

Calibration — Bringing color to a known, objective reference so it is accurate rather than guessed. In the field: photographing a grey card or color-reference target in the scene's light and using it to set white balance. At the desk: monitor calibration — measuring and correcting a screen so edited colors match the file.

Candid — A photograph made without the subject posing or, often, being aware of the camera, capturing them as they naturally are rather than as they would arrange themselves for a portrait. Its whole value is the unguarded, unrehearsed moment — the real laugh, the private gesture; the instant a stranger notices the camera and "poses," the candid is gone. The opposite of the asked-for, consented portrait. (Chapter 17)

Catchlight — The small bright reflection of your light source visible in the subject's eye; the detail that makes eyes look alive. Most natural at the 10 or 2 o'clock position. Environmental portrait — A portrait that deliberately includes the subject's meaningful surroundings (workplace, home, craft) so the setting tells the viewer who the person is. Headshot — A tightly framed portrait of the face and shoulders against a plain background, made to represent a person cleanly (for a profile, casting file, or company page). Posing — The deliberate arrangement of a subject's body, limbs, and head for the camera so they read naturally and flatteringly rather than as a stiff, squared-up slab. Broad lighting — A lighting position in which the main light falls on the side of a turned face that is closer to the camera (the broad side); makes a face look wider, fuller, and more open. Short lighting — A lighting position in which the main light falls on the side of a turned face that is farther from the camera (the short side); makes a face look slimmer, sculpted, and more dramatic. The flattering default for most faces. Portrait focal length — The focal-length range, roughly 85–135mm (35mm-equivalent), long enough to shoot a head-and-shoulders portrait from a distance that flatters facial perspective rather than distorting it.

Chimping — The habit of reviewing each frame on the camera's rear screen immediately after shooting, instead of keeping the eye on the live scene; a leading cause of missed moments, because the next (often better) moment happens while the photographer is looking at the screen. The cure: while the action is live, camera up and eye on the world; review only in the gaps. (Chapter 10)

Circle of confusion — The largest blur disc a single point of light can render and still look acceptably sharp to a viewer at normal viewing size; the threshold that defines what "in focus" means. A point off the focal plane images not as a point but as a small filled disc, and while that disc stays under the threshold, the eye accepts it as sharp. (Chapter 4)

Clipping — When a bright area is pushed all the way to pure white (highlight clipping, a spike against the histogram's right wall) or a dark area all the way to pure black (shadow clipping, a spike against the left wall), so the camera records no detail there at all — a flat patch that no later editing can recover. (Chapter 3)

Cloning — A retouching action that copies a sampled source patch exactly, pixel for pixel, onto a target with no blending; best on hard edges and repeating structures (railings, walls, horizons).

Color cast — An unwanted overall tint across an image, where the color of the light has shifted everything toward one hue (e.g. a fluorescent-green, tungsten-orange, or open-shade-blue cast). Removing the cast is the core act of color correction.

Color contrast — The visual difference between hues (or, by extension, between intensities or temperatures) used to make one element stand out. Three flavors, in rough order of strength: hue contrast (opposite hues), saturation contrast (an intense color in a muted field), and temperature contrast (a warm note in a cool field, or the reverse). An independent second kind of contrast alongside value contrast. (Chapter 7)

Color correction — The process of making the colors in an image accurate by neutralizing unwanted color casts, so that neutral tones (white, grey, black) read as neutral and the rest of the palette falls into believable place. The objective, "what color was this really?" half of color work; it comes before grading.

Color grading — The deliberate, expressive manipulation of color to create a mood, style, or emotional tone, pushing colors away from strict accuracy toward what the image should feel like. The subjective, "what color should this be, to say what I mean?" half of color work; it comes after correction.

Color harmony — A set of hues whose positions on the color wheel form a deliberate, pleasing relationship — the color equivalent of a musical chord. The four core harmonies for photographers are complementary, analogous, triadic, and monochromatic. (Chapter 7)

Color temperature — A measurement, in kelvin (K), of the color of a light source, running from warm/orange at low values (candle ~1,800 K, tungsten ~2,700–3,000 K), through neutral white in the middle (midday sun ~5,200–5,500 K), to cool/blue at high values (open shade ~7,000–9,000 K); counterintuitively, warmer-looking light has the lower number. (Chapter 5)

Color-grading wheels — Three (sometimes more) color wheels, each controlling the hue and strength of a color tint applied to one tonal range — typically Shadows, Midtones, and Highlights. Dragging a wheel's center point toward a hue tints that tonal zone; the modern, more flexible descendant of split toning.

Complementary colors — Two hues sitting directly opposite each other on the color wheel (red/cyan, orange/blue, yellow/violet, green/magenta). They are maximally different in hue, which is why they make each other appear more intense — the single most powerful and attention-grabbing color relationship in photography. (Chapter 7)

Composition — The arrangement of visual elements within the frame: what is included, what is excluded, and where everything sits relative to the edges and to each other. Understood in this book as visual grammar — a language for directing the viewer's eye and building meaning — not a set of rules to obey.

Compositional framing (framing-within-the-frame) — Using an element within the scene — a doorway, archway, window, branch, tunnel, or gap — to surround or partially enclose the subject. It simultaneously adds a depth layer, directs the eye inward toward the subject, and adds context or mood. Distinct from "the frame" meaning the rectangle's four edges.

Computational photography (preview) — The practice of producing a photograph by capturing and computationally combining multiple frames rather than recording a single exposure; on a phone, pressing the shutter typically fires a rapid burst that is aligned and merged to beat noise and hold a wider tonal range. Previewed here as the new variable in the phone image path; defined fully and dissected in Chapter 23. (Chapter 22, preview — owned by Chapter 23)

Continuous autofocus (AF-C) — The autofocus mode (also "AI Servo") in which the camera focuses continuously while the shutter is half-pressed, constantly re-driving the lens to keep a moving subject sharp; used for anything moving toward or away from the camera — sports, wildlife, children, traffic. (Chapter 4)

Contract (photography agreement) — The written agreement that governs a job — parties, deliverables, fee and payment schedule, the license granted, copyright, usage-beyond-scope, cancellation, and releases — put in place before the work, not after. (Chapter 35)

Converging verticals — Parallel vertical lines in a building (edges, columns, window mullions) that appear to lean toward each other and recede to a vanishing point, because the camera's sensor (film plane) is no longer parallel to the building's face. They are caused by tilting the camera up (or down) to fit a tall building; a level camera keeps them parallel. Keystoning — The wedge- or "falling-backwards"-shaped distortion produced by converging verticals, named for the keystone of an arch: the building reads wider at the bottom and narrower at the top, as though tipping away from (or toward) the viewer. Also called the "falling building" or "tombstoning" effect. Perspective correction — The digital fix for keystoning: editing software stretches the top of the image wider (or narrows the bottom) to pull converging verticals back to true vertical, undoing the wedge. Built into most editors (a "Transform," "Geometry," "Upright," or "Perspective" panel) and many phones. It costs a little edge resolution because the correction crops/stretches the frame, so you compose loose; over-correcting makes the building loom forward or look unnaturally stretched. Tilt-shift lens — A specialized lens whose front element can shift up/down and sideways relative to the sensor (and tilt relative to it, for focus-plane control). For architecture, the shift movement is the key: it raises the lens's view to include the top of a tall building without tilting the camera, so the sensor stays parallel to the building and verticals stay parallel — correcting perspective optically at capture. Expensive, manual-focus, and optional; a level camera plus software correction replaces it for most readers. Available-light interior — A room photographed using only the light already present — daylight through windows plus whatever lamps and fixtures are switched on — with no added flash. The default starting approach for interiors, because available light is what makes a room feel like itself; the skill is to manage its contrast (window vs. room), not to replace it with flash. Bracketing(previewed here; developed in Ch.23/Ch.26.) Making several exposures of the identical, locked-down frame at different brightnesses (e.g., one for a bright window, one for the mid-room, one for dark corners), to blend later into a single image that holds detail in both the brightest and darkest areas. The non-negotiable requirement is that the camera not move between frames, so bracketing requires a tripod (or a rock-steady brace). Two-point perspective — A vantage taken at a building's corner, where the two visible faces recede toward two separate vanishing points and the corner itself forms a strong central vertical line. The most useful single architectural vantage: it conveys the building's three-dimensional form while a level camera keeps the corner edge true. The plumb line — A true-vertical reference (literally a weighted line that hangs straight down; in practice, a building's corner or door frame, or the camera's built-in level) used to judge and correct whether a building's verticals are straight, both at capture and when applying perspective correction.

Cool colors — The blues, cyans, greens, and violets on the other half of the wheel — the colors of shade, water, ice, and dusk. They appear to recede (fall back) and read as calm, distant, lonely, or clinical. (Chapter 7)

Copyright — The legal ownership of a creative work; under the law of most countries the photographer owns the copyright in a photograph automatically the moment it is made, with no registration required. Selling a print or a license does not transfer copyright. (Chapter 35)

Cost of doing business (CODB) — A photographer's true annual overhead — gear depreciation, insurance, software, taxes, marketing, and non-billable admin time — which, divided across the realistic number of billable days in a year, sets the floor under any defensible day rate. (Chapter 35)

Critique — the learnable skill of examining a photograph and articulating precisely why it works or fails, rather than reacting with bare approval or dislike; the engine of a photographer's growth. Slow looking — the deliberate practice of examining an image at length and methodically (running an active route through it) before forming any judgment, overruling the brain's instant "gist" verdict. Description (critique stage) — the first stage of critique: the objective inventory of what is literally in the frame (subject, placement, light, tones), with no analysis, interpretation, or opinion. Analysis (critique stage) — the second stage of critique: describing how the visual elements relate — composition, leading lines, visual weight, color and tonal relationships — i.e. the image's structure and mechanics, still without opinion. Interpretation (critique stage) — the third stage of critique: stating what the photograph means or expresses, with the visual evidence in the frame that supports the claim; grounded opinion, not projection. Judgment (critique stage) — the fourth and final stage of critique: the verdict on whether (and how, and by what standard) the image succeeds — earned by the three stages beneath it, and typically the shortest step. Intent vs. effect — the distinction between what the photographer was trying to do (intent) and what the photograph actually does to a viewer who has none of the maker's context (effect); critique judges the effect, because only the photograph and its effect travel to the viewer. Visual literacy — the ability to read images critically, understand how they construct meaning, and articulate it, the way verbal literacy lets one read and analyze a text; it makes a person both a better photographer and harder to manipulate by engineered imagery. Craft problem (critique) — a flaw that works against what an image is clearly trying to do and is fixable; a skilled photographer would agree it is a flaw. (Stated as a problem plus its fix.) Taste preference (critique) — an aesthetic choice about which skilled people can reasonably disagree; not an objective flaw. (Owned as a personal preference, not presented as a rule.) Taste laundering — presenting a personal preference as an objective rule so it sounds authoritative; the tell is "never" or "always" attached to a creative choice.

Curation — The disciplined selection and arrangement of images into a coherent body of work: choosing which frames represent you and which, however much you love them, do not earn their place. From the Latin cura, "care." Defined as much by what it excludes as by what it includes; the act of learning to see your own work the way a stranger will — coldly, on its merits, with no access to the backstory. The portfolio (final) — Your curated, sequenced, and presented set of 20–30 images that, standing together, demonstrate range, technical control, and a personal voice. The capstone deliverable of the book; the proof, to a client, a gallery, a course, and yourself, that you became a photographer. Judged by its weakest image, not its strongest. Sequence (final) — The deliberate order in which a portfolio's images are presented, so that the arrangement itself carries meaning the individual frames cannot: controlling what the viewer sees first and last (primacy/recency), how neighboring frames comment on each other (adjacency), and the pace of loud and quiet across the whole (rhythm). Composition at the scale of the body of work. Self-assessment — The honest, structured evaluation of your own growth and your own work against explicit standards rather than against your mood; the internalized form of critique (Ch.31) turned on yourself. Defeats the illusion that you aren't improving by comparing against a fixed baseline (00-before) that never moves while your skill rises.

D

daguerreotype — The first commercially practical photographic process (announced 1839): a unique, mirror-bright positive image formed directly on a silver-coated copper plate, with no negative and therefore no copies. Required long exposures (seconds to minutes) and rendered the world with extreme literal sharpness. wet-plate collodion — The dominant process of roughly the 1850s–1880s: a glass plate coated on the spot with a light-sensitive emulsion that had to be exposed and developed while still wet (within about ten to fifteen minutes), forcing field photographers to carry a portable darkroom. film — A flexible, light-sensitive emulsion on a transparent base (first on rolls from 1888, later in 35mm cartridges and sheet sizes), allowing many successive exposures developed later. Each roll had a fixed sensitivity (ISO) and a finite frame count; it was the dominant capture medium for over a century and shaped photographic discipline into the digital era. the snapshot — The casual, quickly made, unposed photograph of everyday life, taken by a non-specialist with no artistic ambition; born of the 1888 roll-film camera. It democratized photography by maker (no chemistry needed) and by subject (ordinary life made worth photographing); its artless aesthetic was later embraced as a deliberate style. the decisive moment (historical) — The fraction of a second in which a scene's geometry and an event's significance reach their peak simultaneously, after which they dissolve; the term (popularized by Henri Cartier-Bresson) for the instant a street or documentary photographer waits and prepares to seize. Demands readiness — anticipation, patience, and release at the one instant. straight photography — The principle, reacting against Pictorialism from around 1915, that a photograph should embrace rather than disguise its own nature: sharp focus, full tonal range, honest framing, minimal manipulation, with the art located in the seeing rather than in darkroom confection. The philosophical spine of this book. the digital revolution — The replacement, from roughly the 1990s through the 2000s, of chemical film with electronic image sensors that convert light directly into digital data, transforming photography from a slow, costly, physical craft into an instantaneous, nearly free, infinitely reviewable and editable practice — changing the friction around seeing, not the seeing itself. Pictorialism — The turn-of-the-twentieth-century movement (c.1890–1915) that sought to win photography the status of fine art by making photographs resemble other art: soft focus, textured papers, and heavy darkroom hand-work that suppressed the camera's mechanical sharpness. the New Color — The embrace, by serious art photographers from roughly the 1970s, of color as a fully expressive medium in its own right — finding the saturated poetry in ordinary American life and legitimizing color photography as art after decades of its being dismissed as vulgar or commercial.

Dark current — The accumulation of signal on a sensor from heat rather than light: thermal energy randomly frees electrons that the sensor cannot distinguish from light-generated ones, building up the entire time the shutter is open and faster at higher temperatures; the underlying cause of long-exposure (hot-pixel) noise. (Chapter 21, Physics box)

Depth of field (DoF) — The range of distances in a scene that appears acceptably sharp — the band in front of and behind the focal plane whose blur discs stay under the circle of confusion. A shallow (narrow) depth of field has only a thin slice in focus; a deep (wide) one holds a thick slab sharp. Controlled by three levers: aperture, focus distance, and focal length. (Chapter 4)

Developer (mobile app category)(book-specific term, defined in Chapter 25) The class of mobile app that functions as a darkroom — global and local tone/color adjustment, presets, and export — as opposed to a camera app (capture), a specialist (one job done well), or a publisher (the social platform, which silently re-edits uploads). The app a photographer spends most of their editing life inside; chosen on three tests: accepts RAW, offers true local adjustments, and saves your own presets. (Chapter 25)

Diffraction — The softening of fine detail across the entire image that begins at very small apertures (beyond roughly f/11–f/16 on most cameras), as light bends at the edges of the small aperture hole; the reason "stopping down more" stops helping and starts hurting, so the sharpness sweet spot for most lenses is f/8–f/11. (Chapter 4)

Diffuser — Anything translucent (a curtain, a sheet, baking paper, a panel) placed between a hard source and the subject to scatter the light and enlarge the effective source, softening it. (Chapter 5)

Digital zoom — The "zoom" a phone performs when pinched past its real optical lenses: it crops into the sensor and computationally upscales the result, inventing detail it never captured, so the image grows progressively softer and mushier the further it is pushed. The opposite of optical (true-lens) magnification, which stays sharp. (Chapter 22)

Direction of light — The angle from which the main light strikes the subject relative to the camera, determining where highlights and shadows fall and therefore how much shape, texture, and depth the subject appears to have; the five main directions are front, side, back, top, and under. (Chapter 5)

Disclosure — The act of telling viewers, clients, editors, or contests what was altered in a photograph and to what degree — via a caption note, an edit log, or embedded content-provenance credentials — converting a potential deception into a declared choice.

Documentary photography — Photography that sets out to tell a true story about real people, places, or events across a body of images, made with intention over time and meant to inform, bear witness, or move the viewer. Differs from street photography in being about its subject in a sustained way (returning to one fishing village, hospital night shift, or neighborhood) rather than about the act of seeing the world; its discipline is seeing and responsibility. (Chapter 17)

Dodge and burn (retouching) — Selectively lightening (dodge) and darkening (burn) small areas of a photograph to lead the viewer's eye and model form in three dimensions; the terms come from the wet darkroom and, done well, the effect is invisible.

Dominant hue — A single color that occupies most of the frame (70–90%) and sets its overall character, both giving the image a unified emotional temperature and staging any contrasting color as a spotlight. The basis of the dominant-hue image: a field overwhelmingly one hue, broken by a single small note of a contrasting color (one red umbrella in a grey street). (Chapter 7)

Dragging the shutter — using a slow shutter speed together with flash so the slow shutter records the ambient light and any motion as a streak while the brief flash burst freezes a sharp core of the subject; yields motion and a crisp subject in one frame. Gel — a small sheet of colored, heat-resistant film placed over a flash head to tint its light, most often to match the flash's color to the ambient light (so one white balance pleases both) or to add a creative color. CTO (Color Temperature Orange) — a gel that warms a flash; a full CTO converts a daylight (~5500 K) flash to roughly tungsten (~3200 K), used to match the flash to warm indoor ambient. The most-used corrective gel. CTB (Color Temperature Blue) — a gel that cools a flash, pushing it toward a bluer color to match cool ambient (deep shade, overcast) or to create a deliberately cold look. Ambient/flash balance — the deliberate choice of how much of a final photograph is made of found (ambient) light versus flash, set independently by shutter speed (ambient) and flash power (flash); ranges on a spectrum from flash-dominant to ambient-dominant. Mixed lighting — a scene illuminated by two or more light sources of different color temperatures at once (e.g., warm tungsten lamps plus a cool window plus flash), requiring a white-balance strategy because one setting cannot render several colors correctly. Color cast — an overall tint, across part or all of an image, caused by light whose color the white balance has not accounted for; a fault when accidental, a creative tool when chosen. Front-curtain (first-curtain) sync — flash fires at the start of the exposure (the default); with a moving subject under a slow shutter, the motion streak is painted ahead of the frozen subject, which can read as moving backward. Rear-curtain (second-curtain) sync — flash fires at the end of the exposure, so the motion streak is recorded first and the sharp freeze lands on top; the trail falls behind a moving subject, the natural-looking way. Preferred for moving subjects. Two-exposure model — the framing idea that every flash photograph is really two exposures in one frame — the ambient exposure (set by shutter speed) and the flash exposure (set by flash power) — that add together but are controlled nearly independently.

Drone (UAV) — A small remotely piloted aircraft — formally an uncrewed aerial vehicle — almost always a multi-rotor ("quadcopter") carrying a stabilized camera and a live video link to the pilot's controller or phone. It places a camera where historically a helicopter was required, but it is an aircraft and a surveillance device before it is a camera, and flying one assumes real legal and ethical duties.

E

Editing (selecting) — In street and documentary work, the ruthless act of selecting the few frames that work from the many that don't (distinct from "processing," which adjusts an image). The skill that most distinguishes serious work from prolific snapshooting: from a 300-frame session, two or three keepers is a good day. Its method is to let the take cool, cut ~90% on a fast first pass, compare near-duplicates, and ask whether each survivor would stand for a stranger who wasn't there. (Chapter 17; fuller craft owned by Ch.34)

Enhancement — Editing that makes a photograph the best possible version of what was actually there, preserving the record/claim of what was in front of the lens.

Equivalent exposures — Different combinations of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO that produce the exact same brightness because every stop gained on one control is given back on another; they differ only in their side effects (depth of field, motion rendering, noise). The practical proof of the exposure triangle. (Chapter 3)

Establishing shot — A wide frame, borrowed from filmmaking, that tells the viewer where they are and what kind of place this is; it opens a photo sequence and gives every tighter frame a context to belong to. Usually shot wide, from an elevated vantage, with deep depth of field, at the edge of the day.

Export/resize — The act of producing a new, flattened delivery copy from a non-destructive edit, at a chosen size, format, and compression for a specific destination — distinct from "saving the photo" (the edit recipe on the original stays in the app). Getting the export wrong is the most common reason a finished image looks soft, muddy, or mis-cropped after posting. The exported file is a delivery copy, never the master; the RAW plus the non-destructive edit remain the master. (Chapter 25)

Exposure — The total amount of light that reaches the sensor while a photograph is made, and by extension how bright or dark the resulting image is; too much light is overexposed (washed out, highlights blown to white), too little is underexposed (muddy, shadows collapsed to black), and the right amount is well exposed. It is one quantity of light, reached by three controls (aperture, shutter speed, ISO). (Chapter 3)

Exposure compensation — A control that overrides the meter's recommendation in stops, in any automatic or priority mode, telling the camera to make the image brighter (+) or darker (−) than it thinks correct; the fix for the meter's middle-grey bias, captured by the rule "white snow → add; black cat → subtract." In full Manual the same thing is done by setting the meter pointer to +/− instead of 0. (Chapter 3)

Exposure lock (AE/AF lock) — A phone control (usually press-and-hold on the screen) that freezes the current auto-exposure and auto-focus so they do not shift as you recompose the frame or as the scene changes; "AE/AF lock" stands for auto-exposure / auto-focus lock. Lets you meter and focus on what matters, then reframe, and stops the image from pulsing brighter and darker between frames. (Chapter 22)

Exposure triangle — The relationship among aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, in which all three are measured in stops so that light gained from one can be given back by another, holding the overall brightness constant while changing the look (depth of field, motion, noise). Exposure is therefore a balance that can be struck many ways — a creative decision, not a single correct answer. (Chapter 3)

Eye-detection autofocus — A subject-detection AF mode that finds and tracks a subject's nearest eye, holding focus there as the subject moves; the single most worthwhile piece of AF automation for portraits of people (and pets, where animal-eye AF exists). (Chapter 4)

F

F-number — The notation for aperture, written f/2.8, f/8, f/16, etc.; it is the lens's focal length divided by the diameter of the opening, so the scale runs backwards from intuition — a small f-number is a large opening (more light) and a large f-number is a small opening (less light). The full-stop sequence (f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22) multiplies by roughly 1.4 each step. (Chapter 3)

Feathering — Aiming a light so its edge (rather than its hot center) falls across the subject, using the softer falloff at the beam's edge for more even, gentle coverage and to control spill. (Chapter 12)

Fill flash — A low-powered flash added to lighten (fill in) shadows under existing bright light without becoming the dominant source; used outdoors to open harsh-noon shadows or to lift a backlit subject out of silhouette while keeping a bright background properly exposed. Good fill is subtle to the point of being invisible. (Chapter 11)

Fill light — A second, weaker, usually softer light placed near the camera (often opposite the key) whose job is to lighten the shadow side and restore detail there without erasing the modeling the key created. Most often supplied not by a light but by a reflector. If fill equals key, the face flattens to a snapshot. (Chapter 12)

Flash sync speed — The fastest shutter speed at which the camera's shutter is fully open at one instant, allowing a normal flash burst to expose the whole frame; commonly around 1/200 s or 1/250 s. Exceeding it with a normal flash produces a black band across part of the frame because the shutter forms a moving slit and is never fully open. (Chapter 11)

Focal plane — The single distance from the camera that a lens renders in true, perfect sharpness — a flat, invisible sheet hanging in the scene parallel to the back of the camera (the sensor). A lens can focus only one distance at a time; everything nearer or farther blurs gradually with distance from this plane. Also called the plane of focus. (Chapter 4)

Focal-length equivalent (35mm equivalent) — The focal length on a full-frame ("35mm") camera that would give the same angle of view as a given lens on a different sensor size; the number that actually tells you how wide or tight a shot is, used to compare across wildly different cameras. A phone's main camera is typically about 26–28mm-equivalent (a wide field). (Chapter 22)

Focus peaking — A display aid that paints a bright, selectable-color shimmer (red, white, yellow) over the edges currently in sharp focus, shown in live view or the electronic viewfinder; the photographer turns the focus ring until the shimmer sits on the part to be sharp, turning an eyeball judgment into an unmistakable signal. (Chapter 4)

Focus point — The spot in the frame, placed by the photographer (with a joystick, dial, or screen tap), that tells autofocus where to focus. Single-point AF — one small point placed exactly on the subject (the eye) — is the most precise and controllable AF-area mode and the recommended default. (Chapter 4)

Focus-and-recompose — A single-point workflow: place the center focus point on the subject, half-press to lock focus in AF-S, then swing the camera to the desired composition and fire. Fast and reliable at moderate apertures, but it fails at very shallow depth of field and close distances, where arcing the camera shifts the focal plane off the subject. (Chapter 4)

Foreground / midground / background — The three depth layers of an image: the foreground is nearest the camera, the background is farthest away, and the midground is the zone between (often where the subject sits). The gaps between the three layers are read by the eye as three-dimensional space.

Frequency separation — A retouching technique that splits a photograph into a low-frequency tone layer (broad color and brightness) and a high-frequency texture layer (pores, fine detail), so broad tone can be smoothed without disturbing the texture that makes skin look real.

Front light — Light coming from behind or beside the photographer, striking the subject's front, so shadows fall behind the subject out of view; even, low-drama, and flat, hiding texture and form. (Chapter 5)

G

Generative AI — A computer system that produces new content (here, images) by predicting what is statistically likely based on patterns learned from a large body of existing data, with no real scene behind the output. Diffusion model — The class of model behind most of today's photorealistic image generators; it creates an image by reversing a noise process — starting from visual static and removing noise step by step, steered by a text prompt, until a coherent image emerges. Generative fill — Selecting an area of an image and having a generative model replace it with newly generated content (to add, remove, or extend); the model invents pixels that were never captured to match a prompt or the surrounding image. AI denoise — Software that removes random sensor noise from a real photograph by learning to distinguish noise from genuine detail and stripping the former; it refines the captured record (the gentle end of the capture-to-conjured spectrum). AI upscaling — Software that enlarges an image and invents plausible fine detail to fill the larger pixel grid; restoration when modest, fabrication when pushed hard, because the added detail was never captured. Provenance — The documented, checkable origin and edit-history of an image: where it came from and what was done to it, recorded so it can be verified rather than merely claimed. Content credentials — Tamper-evident, cryptographically signed metadata embedded in an image file that records how the image was made and edited and travels with the file, so viewing software can display and verify its provenance. Disclosure (AI) — The practice of clearly telling viewers, clients, editors, or contests when and how AI was used to generate or substantially alter an image — in plain language a non-expert understands and, where possible, in embedded provenance data. The capture-to-conjured spectrum — The chapter's organizing device that ranks AI imaging tools by how much new content they invent, from masking/denoise (refine the real signal) through upscale (invent fine detail) to generative fill and text-to-image (invent whole content).

Gesture — The expressive position of a body or a hand at a moment — the language a body speaks without words (a reach, a recoil, a leap, a wave, an embrace, a hand rising to a face); it has a peak, the instant it is most fully itself, which is usually the decisive frame. The failing frames are those where the body is still gathering into the gesture or already collapsing out of it. (Chapter 10)

Golden hour — The roughly hour-long window just after sunrise and just before sunset when the sun is low on the horizon, producing warm-colored (gold/orange), soft, low-angled directional light with long shadows; widely considered the most flattering natural light. (Chapter 5)

Grid — A honeycomb of cells fitted to a light or softbox that forces the beam to travel straight, narrowing its spread into a controlled pool and killing spill. A grid does not soften light; it makes it tighter and more controlled — light here and nowhere else. (Chapter 12)

Guide number — A single figure rating a flash's raw light output (a larger guide number means more power and reach); historically used in a distance-and-aperture calculation, but in the digital era used mainly to compare flashes when shopping rather than computed with in the field. (Chapter 11)

H

Hair light — A rim light placed high and behind the subject specifically to light the top/back of the hair, lifting it off the background. (Chapter 12)

Hard light — Light from a small source (small relative to the subject — e.g. the midday sun, a bare bulb, an LED flash) that produces sharp-edged, dark, well-defined shadows and abrupt, bright highlights; dramatic, graphic, high-contrast, and texture-revealing. (Chapter 5)

Harsh midday sun (harsh noon) — Hard (small source), top-direction (eyes in shadow), neutral-to-cool light; the least flattering light for most subjects, but useful for bold graphic shadows and high-contrast work. (Chapter 5)

HDR (high dynamic range) (preview) — A computational technique that blends several exposures of one scene so that both bright areas (a sky) and dark areas (a shadowed foreground) hold detail in a single frame — something one exposure on any camera cannot do. Previewed here as the most common phone computation; defined fully and unpacked in Chapter 23. (Chapter 22, preview — owned by Chapter 23)

Healing — A retouching action that covers a spot by blending borrowed texture from a sampled source with the local tone and color of the target, so the repair melts seamlessly into its surroundings; best on smooth, varying surfaces (skin, sky, water).

High-key — A deliberate tonal treatment in which bright tones dominate the frame — typically a separately-lit pure-white background, a soft low-ratio key, and generous fill, giving an open, clean, airy feel. Not an overexposed mistake: the subject is correctly exposed; dark tones are deliberately near-absent. (Chapter 12)

High-speed sync (HSS) — A flash mode that allows syncing at shutter speeds faster than the normal sync speed by firing the flash as a rapid series of pulses across the shutter's travel; it greatly reduces available flash power and is a specialist tool, mostly for using flash in bright sun at wide apertures. (Chapter 11)

Histogram (previewed here; owned by the develop chapters) — A bar graph of how many pixels in an image fall at each level of brightness, from pure black at the far left to pure white at the far right; the only field tool that judges exposure honestly, because it reports the recorded data regardless of how the screen or your eyes are behaving. Introduced here as a clipping check; developed fully in Chapter 26 and Chapter 21. (Chapter 3)

Hot pixels — Bright stray red, green, or blue dots that appear in the dark areas of a long exposure when individual sensor photosites misfire as the sensor warms up over many seconds; worse with longer exposures and warmer temperatures. Removed by long-exposure noise reduction or in software. (Chapter 21)

HSL — Hue, Saturation, Luminance: the three independent properties of a color, exposed as a develop panel that adjusts each property for each color band (reds, oranges, yellows, greens, aquas, blues, purples, magentas) separately. Hue moves a color around the wheel; saturation moves it between grey and vivid; luminance moves it between dark and light without changing its hue.

Hue — The color's name — its position on the color wheel (red, orange, teal, magenta), independent of how pale, dark, or intense it is. What we mean in everyday speech by "red" or "blue"; a fire engine and a dusty terracotta pot can be the same hue and differ entirely in the other two dimensions. (Chapter 7)

Hyperfocal distance — The focus distance at which depth of field extends from infinity all the way to its nearest possible point — yielding the maximum front-to-back depth of field for a given aperture and lens. Focus there and everything from roughly half that distance out to the horizon is acceptably sharp. The most useful number in landscape photography. (Chapter 4)

I

Image stacking — The technique of capturing multiple frames of the same scene and merging them pixel-by-pixel into one image to achieve what a single frame cannot: less noise, more dynamic range, more depth of field, or sharper detail. The signal (real brightness) reinforces across frames while the random noise averages toward zero. HDR (high dynamic range) — Capturing several exposures of one scene (some metered for shadows, some for highlights) and merging them into a single image that holds more brightness range than any one capture could — e.g. a shadowed face and a bright window both with detail. Tone mapping — The process of compressing a wide range of captured brightness down into the narrower range a display or print can reproduce, deciding which tones to lift, which to hold, and how hard to compress the extremes. Gentle tone mapping looks natural; heavy tone mapping produces the flat, grey, over-detailed, haloed "HDR look." Depth map — A computed image that records, at each pixel, the distance of that part of the scene from the camera (rather than its color) — typically visualized as a grayscale image where near is bright and far is dark. Portrait mode needs one to decide what to keep sharp and what to blur. Synthetic bokeh — A digitally simulated background blur applied according to a depth map, imitating the out-of-focus rendering of a fast lens — the effect that makes portrait mode's subject "pop" from a softened background, used because a phone's small sensor and lens cannot produce much background blur optically. Semantic segmentation — The phone identifying what different regions of an image are (sky, face, foliage, food, etc.) and then processing each region differently with a separate tuned recipe — the source of the consistent modern "phone look" and of content-aware edits.

Implied line — A line that is felt rather than physically drawn — most powerfully the direction of a person's gaze, but also a pointing finger, the direction of motion, or the line connecting two figures. It steers the viewer without any visible line.

Incident light meter — A handheld meter held at the subject and pointed back toward the camera to read the light falling on the subject (rather than reflected off it); used in the studio to set lighting ratios exactly by metering the highlight side and the shadow side and reading the difference in stops. (Chapter 12)

Influence — The productive absorption of another photographer's way of seeing — letting their work expand what you notice and care about so it changes how you see and comes out transformed in work that is recognizably your own. Influence takes the how (a portable principle); it becomes imitation when it takes the what (the specific result).

Informed consent — Agreement to be photographed and to have the images used, given by a person who understands who you are, what the photograph is for, where and how it may appear, and that they may decline. Distinct from mere permission, which lacks understanding of the use.

Ingest — The process of bringing images from the camera or memory card into your managed system — copying the files, verifying the copy, renaming them to your convention, and making the first backup — before you do anything else with them. The card is not safely "off the camera" until ingest is complete and a second copy exists. Culling — The process of reviewing a take and selecting the keepers: deciding, frame by frame, what is worth keeping, what is worth developing, and what to discard. Done efficiently in graduated passes (a fast reject pass, then a slower select-and-rate pass) rather than one agonizing sweep. Metadata — The information stored alongside a photograph that describes it, in two kinds: automatic data the camera records at capture (the EXIF standard's date, time, camera, lens, exposure, and optional GPS) and descriptive data you add yourself (keywords, rating, caption, copyright, named location). The descriptive layer is what makes a library searchable. Keyword — A descriptive tag you attach to an image — a searchable word for what the photograph is of or about (e.g. portrait, autumn, red-door, a person's name, a client code). Keywording well lets you search a library of thousands instead of browsing it. The 3-2-1 backup rule — The standard for protecting digital files: keep at least 3 copies of every file, on at least 2 different types of media, with at least 1 copy kept offsite (physically elsewhere, including the cloud). It survives every realistic failure at once: 3 copies defeat a single failure, 2 media defeat a common failure mode, 1 offsite defeats a site-wide disaster. One copy is zero backups. Catalog — The database a non-destructive library application maintains: pointers to where each original file lives on disk, plus every edit recipe, rating, and keyword. It is the map to your photos (the territory); moving or renaming the files outside the catalog breaks its links. (First defined in Chapter 26; central to workflow here.) Archive — A completed project moved out of the active working library into long-term, stable storage in a self-contained, recoverable form — originals plus edit recipe, full-resolution finals in open formats, delivered exports, and a plain-text note. It is a deliberate handoff to the future, distinct from both deletion and routine backup, and it obeys the 3-2-1 rule. File-naming convention — A consistent, predetermined rule for what your image files are called, replacing the camera's opaque IMG_4471.JPG with a name that is unique (never collides/overwrites), sortable (a leading YYYY-MM-DD orders files by capture date), informative (readable out of context), and portable (lowercase, no spaces, hyphens/underscores, so it works on every system and upload).

Inverse-square law — The principle that light intensity falls off with the square of the distance from the source: doubling the distance reduces the light to one quarter (two stops). A close light is bright and falls off steeply across a subject (dramatic, dark background); a far light is dimmer and falls off evenly (flat, scene-wide). (Chapter 11)

Invoice — The itemized bill a photographer sends, restating the production fee, the license and its exact terms, any deposit paid, the balance due, the due date, and payment method; part of the paper trail that defines the use. (Chapter 35)

ISO — The sensor's sensitivity to light, more precisely how strongly the camera amplifies the signal it captured; the digital descendant of film speed, named for the standards body that set the scale. Numbers double intuitively (ISO 100, 200, 400, 800…) and each doubling is one stop. Its side effect is noise (digital grain), so it is the control of last resort — raised only after aperture and shutter are exhausted. (Chapter 3)

J

Juxtaposition — The meaning created when two or more elements that would be unremarkable alone are placed together in one frame, so the relationship between them — visual rhyme, ironic contrast, accidental commentary — becomes the subject. The street photographer's wit, and almost entirely a matter of position and timing: find a strong background element (a sign, poster, shaft of light, graphic shape) and wait for a person to complete it. (Chapter 17)

K

Key light — The main light in any lighting setup; the source that does most of the illuminating and sets the direction and character of the light on the subject. Every other light (fill, rim, background) is an adjustment to what the key establishes; one key plus a reflector is enough for professional portraits. (Chapter 12)

L

Lead room (nose room) — The empty space deliberately left in front of the direction a subject is looking or moving, so the viewer's eye follows the gaze or motion into the frame rather than off the edge.

Leading lines — Lines within a photograph, real or implied, that draw the viewer's eye through the frame, usually toward the main subject. A line that enters at a corner or edge and travels to the subject gives the eye a built-in path to follow.

Licensing — Granting a client the right to use a photograph in specified ways, for a specified time and place, while the photographer retains ownership (copyright); the core way commercial photography earns, because the same image can be licensed again to others. (Chapter 35)

Light painting — A technique in which, during a long exposure, the photographer moves a handheld light (flashlight, phone torch, LED wand, hand-fired flash) through the frame or across a subject to "draw" with it on the sensor — either tracing visible shapes in the air pointed at the camera, or selectively illuminating a subject by sweeping the light over it and dwelling longer where more brightness is wanted. Effectively studio lighting built one brushstroke at a time. (Chapter 21)

Light trail — The continuous streak of light recorded when a moving bright light source (car head/tail-lights, a bicycle lamp, a Ferris wheel, an aircraft strobe) travels across the frame during a long exposure; the dark object carrying the light is too dim and fleeting to register, so only the moving light draws a ribbon. White-ish from oncoming headlights, red from receding tail-lights. (Chapter 21)

Lighting pattern — A named, repeatable fall of light on the face produced by the key light's position, identified by the shape of the nose's shadow and where light and shadow divide the face. The four classic patterns are loop, Rembrandt, butterfly, and split. (Chapter 12)

Lighting ratio — The relationship between the brightness of the highlight side of the face (key + fill) and the shadow side (fill alone), written as a ratio (1:1, 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 16:1+) and corresponding to stops of difference (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 stops). It controls how dramatic the portrait feels: low ratio = gentle and even, high ratio = dramatic and contrasty. Set by eye with the histogram or exactly with a handheld incident meter. (Chapter 12)

Local adjustment — An edit applied to a selected part of the frame rather than to the whole image, used to direct the viewer's eye (the post-capture continuation of composition). Made by selecting an area with one of four tools — a radial/elliptical mask (a subject or face), a linear/graduated mask (skies and top-to-bottom changes; the digital equivalent of a graduated ND filter), a brush (irregular shapes painted by fingertip), or an auto/AI mask (the app detects sky/subject/skin) — and then changing exposure, color, or texture within it. Distinguished from a global adjustment, which changes the entire frame at once. (Chapter 25)

Long exposure — Any photograph in which the shutter stays open long enough that motion — of the subject or of the camera — becomes visible as blur, streak, or smoothing rather than a frozen instant; in practice roughly half a second to hours. The defining feature is not a specific duration but that time has become long enough to see. Requires the camera to be held perfectly still (a tripod), so only the intended subject moves. (Chapter 21)

Long-exposure noise reduction (LENR) — An in-camera function that, immediately after a long exposure, takes a second exposure of the same length with the shutter closed (a "dark frame") capturing only the sensor's own hot-pixel pattern, then subtracts that pattern from the photograph to remove the bright stray dots that accumulate over long exposures. Works well, but ties the camera up for a second equal-length frame (a 3-minute shot occupies the camera ~6 minutes). (Chapter 21)

Look — A repeatable, recognizable color-and-tone treatment applied consistently across many images so they read as a coherent body of work; a grade you decide to keep and reuse as part of your visual voice.

Loop lighting — The key placed about 30–45° to the side and slightly above eye level, casting a small nose shadow that loops down toward the cheek without touching the cheek shadow. The most generally flattering and most-used portrait pattern; the default starting point. (Chapter 12)

Low-key — A deliberate tonal treatment in which dark tones dominate the frame — typically an unlit dark/black background, a single higher-ratio key, little or no fill, and often a rim light for separation, giving a moody, dramatic feel. Not an underexposed mistake: the lit portions are correctly exposed; the darkness is the dominance of unlit areas and deep shadow. (Chapter 12)

Luminance — Synonym for value used especially in editing (the "L" of HSL): a color's brightness on a light-to-dark scale, separate from its hue and saturation. (Chapter 7)

LUT (Look-Up Table) — A file that maps every input color to a specific output color, used to apply a complex color transformation in one step — a look "frozen" into a translation table. Applied after correction; a starting point, never a substitute for judgment.

M

Macro photography — Photography at a reproduction ratio of 1:1 or greater — the subject rendered life-size on the sensor or larger. Below roughly 1:1 (about 1:10 up to just under life-size) the work is properly called close-up rather than true macro. Macro is a change of scale, not location: ordinary subjects within arm's reach become landscapes of detail. Magnification (in macro) — The ratio between a subject's real-world size and the size of the image it projects onto the sensor. A 10 mm subject projecting a 10 mm image is 1:1 (life-size); a 5 mm image is 1:2 (half life-size); a 20 mm image is 2:1 (twice life-size). It measures recorded detail — how much of the sensor the subject's real detail fills — not how large the subject appears on screen. Reproduction ratio (magnification ratio) — The subject-to-sensor size ratio that defines what a macro setup can do (1:1, 1:2, 2:1). "Reproduction ratio" and "magnification ratio" are used interchangeably. Measurable with no math by photographing a ruler: divide the sensor's long edge by the millimetres of ruler that span the frame. Working distance — The gap between the front of the lens and the subject at a given magnification — what the photographer's hand and the subject actually feel. Distinct from focus distance, which is measured from the sensor. Longer working distance (from a longer macro lens) gives room to light the subject and a chance at skittish live subjects; it matters more for macro success than raw sharpness. Extension tube — A hollow, glass-free spacer ring mounted between the camera body and an ordinary lens that pushes the lens physically farther from the sensor, letting it focus much closer and magnify more. Because it contains no glass it adds no optical degradation of its own; the trade-offs are lost light, lost infinity focus, and (on contact-less versions) manual aperture and focus. The best cheap first step into macro. Close-up lens (diopter) — A magnifying filter that screws onto the front of a lens like a clear filter, letting it focus closer — in effect a reading glass for the camera. Sold by diopter strength (+1, +2, +4, +10); higher numbers give more magnification. Convenient and keeps all camera electronics working, but cheap single-element versions soften edges and add fringing; two-element achromatic diopters are much better. Reversing the lens — Mounting an ordinary lens backwards (front element toward the sensor) using a cheap reversing ring, so a lens built to project a large scene onto a small sensor instead projects a small subject at high magnification. A reversed 50 mm reaches roughly 1:1; a reversed wide-angle prime can exceed 2:1 for very little money, at the cost of manual everything and a tiny working distance. Diffraction limit — The aperture beyond which the bending and spreading of light waves around a very small opening softens the entire image, not just the out-of-focus parts; past this point stopping down loses more overall sharpness than the depth of field it gains. It sits around f/11 on full-frame and at wider apertures on smaller sensors and phones. It is the reason macro cannot simply stop down to solve its depth-of-field problem, and the gap focus stacking bridges. Focus rail (macro) — A geared sliding platform the camera mounts on, used to move the whole camera forward in precise, repeatable increments for focus stacking — especially at extreme magnification — instead of changing the lens's focus. The highest-precision way to march the plane of focus through a subject; a studio tool needed only well past life-size.

Magnified live view — A manual-focusing aid that punches in to a 5×–15× magnified view of the focus area so fine detail can be made crisp before shooting; the most precise focusing method that exists for static subjects, used by landscape and product photographers on tripods. (Chapter 4)

Manipulation — Editing that changes the record of what was in front of the lens — adding, removing, or moving something so the photograph now shows a reality that did not occur.

Manual flash — A mode in which the photographer sets the flash power directly, in stops (1/1 full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8…), and it stays fixed until changed; preferred for deliberate, repeatable lighting because every frame is identical once dialed in. (Chapter 11)

Manual focus — Setting focus by hand — turning a ring on the lens (or dragging a slider on a phone) until the subject snaps into sharpness — rather than letting autofocus do it. The specialist tool for the situations autofocus cannot handle: low light/low contrast, shooting through glass/fences/foliage, macro, stars, and deliberate pre-focus. (Chapter 4)

Memory colors — Colors viewers judge against expectation rather than measurement — skin, sky, foliage — where an inaccurate rendering is immediately and unforgivingly visible. Skin is the most unforgiving memory color, which is why grading must protect it.

Metering — The camera's measurement of scene brightness via its built-in light meter, and its recommendation for a correct exposure, shown on a scale (−3 … 0 … +3) in the viewfinder or screen. The meter assumes every scene should average to middle grey, which is why it is fooled by predominantly bright or dark scenes. Metering modes include evaluative/matrix, center-weighted, and spot. (Chapter 3)

Middle grey — The tone exactly halfway between pure black and pure white that a camera's light meter assumes the average brightness of any scene should come out to; the assumption behind the meter's predictable failure on snow (underexposed toward grey) and dark scenes (overexposed toward grey). (Chapter 3)

Mixed lighting — A scene lit by two or more sources of different color temperatures (e.g. warm tungsten lamps and a cool blue window at dusk), which no single white-balance setting can fully neutralize; handled by favoring one source, matching the sources, or embracing the contrast. (Chapter 5)

Mobile RAW — Relatively unprocessed image data captured and saved by a phone's camera before the device applies its usual contrast, saturation, and sharpening (Apple markets its version as ProRAW; Android exposes RAW as DNG). Unlike a JPEG — a finished, baked interpretation the phone committed for you — a mobile RAW is the raw ingredients with the developing left to you: it looks flat straight out of the camera, but that flatness is recoverable latitude (far more highlight and shadow detail, and more brightness levels) the JPEG already spent. The trade-offs are large file size and that the file requires developing to become a finished image. (Chapter 25)

Model release — A signed document in which a person grants permission to use their likeness, typically for commercial purposes, often specifying the scope, duration, and compensation. Generally required for commercial use, not for editorial, portfolio, or news use.

Modifier — Anything placed in front of a light to change the size, softness, direction, or spread of the light it throws (softbox, umbrella, beauty dish, grid, snoot, reflector). Modifiers shape the quality of light; the master variable behind softness is the apparent size of the source as seen from the subject. (Chapter 12)

Monochromatic harmony — A single hue carried across the whole frame but ranging widely in value and saturation (e.g. a study entirely in blues from pale ice to deep navy). With hue contrast removed, value and saturation do all the structural work; elegant, moody, and the safest harmony to shoot. (Chapter 7)

N

Narrative sequence — The specific order in which the images of a photo essay are arranged so that one leads to the next and the set builds meaning; the same frames in two different orders are two different essays. Order is not packaging — order is the work.

Native focal length — A lens's true, physical focal length, which on a phone is a startlingly short few millimetres; unlike the focal-length equivalent, it is the native focal length that governs depth of field, and its shortness is the reason phones keep almost everything in the frame sharp. (Chapter 22)

Negative space — The empty or visually quiet area around and between the subjects in a frame (as opposed to the "positive space" of the subject itself). It gives the subject room to breathe, isolates it, and creates mood such as solitude, scale, or calm; the emptiness itself can be the message.

No-fly zone — Any airspace where drone flight is prohibited or restricted by law, permanently or temporarily. Permanent examples include the airspace around airports and airfields, military bases, national borders, many national parks, prisons, power plants, and government sites; temporary ones (temporary flight restrictions) arise over wildfires, large events and stadiums, disaster zones, and visiting dignitaries. You cannot tell one by looking — you check an official drone-airspace map every time, in the place you actually are, and if in doubt you do not fly.

Non-destructive editing (mobile)(used here; owned/deepened in Chapter 26) The principle, standard in every serious mobile developer, that edits are stored as a reversible list of instructions applied on top of the untouched original, never baked into the pixels until export — so the negative is always preserved and every adjustment can be dialed back or redone, even years later. The reason you can re-interpret an old RAW, and the dividing line between a real darkroom app and a destructive "filter" app that saves over your original. (Chapter 25; defined in Chapter 26)

O

Open shade — Shade that is open to the broad sky (the shaded side of a building, under a tree, in a doorway), where soft light from the whole sky replaces the small hard sun; the no-cost way to turn hard light soft. (Chapter 5)

Overcast — A cloud-covered sky that diffuses the sun across the entire dome of the sky, becoming the largest, softest light source available — a "planet-sized softbox" — producing soft, even, nearly shadowless, slightly cool light. (Chapter 5)

P

Peak action — The apex of a fast movement — the top of a leap, the full extension of a throw, the instant of a strike or a splash — where the gesture is most expressive; previewed in this chapter and formally owned and developed in Chapter 20 (sports, action, wildlife). (Chapter 10, preview)

Perspective — The apparent size and spatial relationship of near versus far objects in a photograph — how big the foreground looks relative to the background and how things stack or separate. It is determined entirely by the photographer's distance from the subject, not by focal length. Point of view — In its literal sense, the camera's physical vantage (the spot from which a photograph is made); in its deeper sense, the consistent stance toward subjects — the recurring way of seeing — that, across a body of work, makes a photographer's images recognizably theirs (their voice). Compression — The flattened, stacked visual effect in which distant objects appear nearly as large as nearer ones and depth seems to collapse; it is created by photographing from far away (a telephoto lens merely crops to the far-away view, it does not cause the compression). Wide-angle distortion — The exaggeration of near-far size differences and the bending or stretching of forms (especially near the frame edges) that occurs when a wide-angle lens is used close to a subject; the honest geometric consequence of extreme expansion, usable as a tool or correctable by distance. Working the scene — The practice of deliberately exploring a subject from many vantages, distances, and framings — circling, crouching, rising, stepping in and back — rather than settling for the first acceptable frame; directed exploration governed by the instinct to subtract, then choosing the keeper in the edit. Foreshortening — The visual compression of an object or limb along the axis pointing toward the camera, so that a thing extending toward the lens appears shorter and bulkier than it really is (e.g., a hand thrust at the lens dwarfing the arm); the cause of unflattering close-wide portraits. Camera height — The vertical position of the lens relative to the subject; the first vantage decision, with three landmark positions: worm's-eye (low, aiming up — subject reads powerful), eye-level (level with the subject — natural and equal), and bird's-eye (high, aiming down — subject reads small and graphic).

Photo essay — A deliberately sequenced set of photographs that together tell a story or make an argument, structured so the order and relationship of the frames carries meaning the way sentences build a paragraph; not a gallery of best individual shots but a structure, with recognized parts (establishing shot, portrait, detail, interaction, the moment, closer). Previewed here as the form documentary work takes; owned and built in full in Chapter 38. (Chapter 17, preview — full ownership Ch.38)

Photo manipulation (ethical) — The deliberate, disclosed-or-contract-appropriate alteration of an image's content for a legitimate purpose. Manipulation becomes deception only when it alters content in a way that breaks the contract the viewer reasonably believed they were under.

Photographer's code of ethics — A photographer's own short, written set of personal rules and lines they will not cross, decided in advance and reviewed as they grow — the standard they hold themselves to regardless of what the law allows or a client requests.

Photographic seeing — The learned, active habit of perceiving the world the way a camera and a viewer will experience it: noticing light, moment, frame, and focus in ordinary life and recognizing when they align into a photograph worth making. It is a trainable habit of attention, not better eyesight or an innate gift, and it runs underneath conscious thought once trained (via chunking). Deliberate practice — The specific kind of practice that actually produces improvement: working at the edge of current ability, on one focused sub-skill, with immediate honest feedback, and with full attention. Distinguished from mindless repetition, which builds experience but not skill. Constraint-based practice — The deliberate use of a self-imposed limitation (a single focal length, subject, colour, light, or a fixed frame budget, for a set period) to force depth and invention. Freedom diffuses attention across everything; a constraint concentrates it, driving the eye past the cliché first frame into the stronger pictures underneath. Visual diet — The images a photographer consumes and, crucially, how deeply they look at them. Slow study of a few great images feeds the eye; half-second feed-scrolling of thousands numbs it. The quantity that matters is images studied, not images seen. The rut — A creative plateau in which seeing has gone stale and output has become repetitive, usually because the photographer has stopped working at the edge of their ability and is coasting on existing competence. Normal, recurring across any career, diagnosable by cause, and beatable with specific tactics rather than willpower.

Photography — Literally "writing with light" (from Greek phōtos, light, and graphē, writing/drawing); the practice of making images by recording light, understood in this book as the deliberate construction of an image through decisions about light, time, framing, and focus rather than the passive recording of a scene. (Chapter 1)

Polarizer (circular polarizing filter, CPL) — A filter that blocks light waves vibrating in a particular orientation; by rotating it in its mount you selectively cut polarized light — chiefly glare and reflections off non-metallic surfaces (water, wet leaves) and the scattered haze in the sky. It deepens blue skies, cuts reflections so you can see into water, and saturates colors. Its main effects cannot be fully reproduced in editing because they act on the light itself before the image exists; it costs about 1.5–2 stops of light. Neutral-density (ND) filter — A piece of dark, color-neutral glass that reduces the light reaching the sensor by a known number of stops (e.g., 3-stop/ND8, 6-stop/ND64, 10-stop/ND1000) without changing color, letting you use a much slower shutter (or wider aperture) than a bright scene would otherwise allow. In landscape it is used chiefly to enable daylight long exposures that smooth water and streak clouds. "Sunglasses for the lens." Graduated ND (graduated neutral-density, GND, "grad") filter — An ND filter that is dark across the top and clear across the bottom, with a graduated transition in the middle, used to darken a bright sky while leaving the darker land properly exposed — compressing a scene whose sky is several stops brighter than its foreground into a single capturable frame. Comes in "hard" (abrupt transition, for flat horizons) and "soft" (gradual, for irregular horizons). Foreground anchor — A prominent near object placed deliberately in the lower part of the frame to give the eye an entry point and to establish a near-to-far relationship that reads as depth. It gives the eye a place to start, creates scale by being obviously near while the rest is far, and gives the bottom of the frame a reason to exist. The grand vista — The sweeping wide-angle landscape that includes the whole scene (valley, coastline, mountain range). Hard to make well: a wide frame includes so much that the eye has nowhere to land, and distance flattens and hazes everything, so it requires a strong foreground, a clear leading structure, and extraordinary light. The intimate landscape — A small, self-contained piece of the natural world isolated frame-filling (a cluster of leaves, a tide pool, a single fern), as opposed to the sweeping vista; the term is generally credited to Eliot Porter. It solves the organization problem by exclusion, needs only soft light and a good eye, and works anywhere on any flat day. Scale element — A recognizable object of known size (a person, a lone tree, a building, a boat, an animal) included in a landscape so the viewer's mind can measure the scene's vastness against it, making the viewer feel how big something is.

Power points — The four locations where the rule-of-thirds lines intersect; the strongest places to position a subject (or the most important point within it, such as the eyes).

Prefocus — Locking focus on the spot the action will occupy before the subject arrives, so the camera does not have to hunt for focus at the decisive instant; a key part of pre-positioning. (Chapter 10)

Preset — A saved bundle of edit settings — a whole develop recipe — that can be applied to another image in a single tap, giving a set of photographs one shared look. A preset sets style (color, contrast, mood), not exposure: after applying it across a set you must still hand-finish each image's brightness, because exposure varies shot to shot while style should not. Best built from your own finished edits (the start of a personal style); bought "preset packs" are at most an adaptable starting point tuned for the seller's photos, never a finished result. (Chapter 25)

Pro/manual mode — A phone camera shooting interface (a "Pro" tab in the stock app, the camera maker's app, or a third-party camera app) that exposes manual control over ISO, shutter speed, focus, and white balance instead of leaving those decisions to Auto. The phone equivalent of taking a dedicated camera out of full-automatic — but with the aperture leg of the exposure triangle fixed, so it drives exposure with shutter speed and ISO only. (Chapter 22)

Property release — A signed agreement granting permission to commercially use images of private property (a building, an interior, a distinctive object) where the owner's permission is needed. (Chapter 35)

ProRAW / RAW on phone — An editable, negative-grade capture format from a phone that records the sensor's full unbaked data instead of (or alongside) a finished JPEG, giving far more latitude to recover highlights and shadows and to set white balance after the fact. Apple's ProRAW additionally combines RAW sensor data with the phone's computational processing, so you keep much of the multi-frame/HDR/noise-reduction benefit and gain RAW editing latitude. RAW files are larger and look flat straight out of the camera until developed. (Chapter 22)

Q

Quality of light — The character of a light source described by how it renders shadows and transitions, ranging from hard (crisp shadow edges, abrupt highlight-to-shadow transitions) to soft (gradual, graded shadows with smooth transitions); a property of shadow edges, not of brightness, and controlled by the apparent size of the source as seen from the subject. (Chapter 5)

R

Raking light — Side light skimming across a surface nearly parallel to it, so every raised bump casts a small shadow and texture leaps out (grazing geometry). (Chapter 5)

RAW development — The process of turning a RAW file's flat, unprocessed sensor data into a finished image through a sequence of adjustments (white balance, exposure, contrast, the tone curve, and finishing); the digital equivalent of developing and printing a negative. Non-destructive editing — An editing model in which adjustments are stored as a list of instructions (a "recipe") applied to the original file on the fly, so the original is never altered; edits remain reversible, comparable, and reproducible. Tone curve — A graph that maps each input brightness to an output brightness (horizontal axis = tone coming in, vertical = tone going out); bending its shape reshapes the entire tonal range, e.g. a gentle S-curve adds contrast while protecting the extremes. Clipping — The loss of all tonal detail at an extreme of brightness: a region recorded as pure white (highlight clipping) or pure black (shadow clipping), with no gradation left to recover. Shown on a histogram as a spike jammed against a wall. Highlight recovery — A develop adjustment that pulls detail back from the brightest tones that still hold differing values, restoring texture in near-blown areas (clouds, a lit wall); it works only while the bright pixels still differ from one another. Shadow recovery — A develop adjustment that lifts the darkest tones to reveal texture hiding in near-black; over-applied, it leaves shadows flat, grey, and noisy. Catalog (library) — The database a non-destructive developer maintains that points to where each original file lives on disk and stores all edit recipes plus organizational metadata (ratings, keywords, collections); it contains pointers to photos and edit instructions, not the photos themselves. Expose to the right (ETTR) — A capture technique of nudging exposure as bright as possible without clipping important highlights, pushing the histogram toward the right wall; because sensors record the most data in the brightest stops, the resulting file has cleaner shadows when pulled back down in develop.

Reflector — A bright surface (purpose-made, or anything white — foam board, a wall, paper, pale clothing) that bounces existing light back into shadows to fill them and lower contrast. (Chapter 5)

Rembrandt lighting — The key placed about 45° to the side and higher, so the nose shadow connects with the cheek shadow and traps a small, bright, roughly triangular patch of light on the shadow-side cheek under the eye. Named for the painter; more dramatic and moodier than loop. The triangle should be no wider than the eye and no longer than the nose. (Chapter 12)

Representation — The way a photograph and its presentation portray a person or group: the implicit story the image tells about them, and whether that story honors their full humanity or flattens them into a symbol, stereotype, or prop.

Retouching — The local, area-by-area alteration of a photograph after the global develop — removing, adding, lightening, darkening, or smoothing specific parts of the frame rather than adjusting the whole image at once.

Rim light — A light placed behind and to the side of the subject, aimed back toward them, that traces a bright edge along the hair, shoulder, or cheek to separate the subject from the background and add depth. Called a hair light when aimed at the top of the head and a kicker/edge light when catching the side; usually gridded or flagged to avoid lens flare. Its job is separation, not facial illumination. (Chapter 12)

Rule of thirds — A composition guideline in which the frame is divided into nine equal cells by two evenly spaced horizontal and two vertical lines; important elements are placed along those lines and the main subject near a line intersection. A reliable default for creating dynamism and breathing room, not a law.

S

Saturation — The color's intensity — how far it sits from neutral grey. A fully saturated red is electric and pure; desaturated it slides toward dusty rose, then brownish-grey, then at zero saturation to a neutral grey with no color identity. High saturation reads as energy or garishness; low saturation reads as calm, muted, or washed-out. Sets the "volume" of a color image. (Chapter 7)

Selective focus — Using a shallow depth of field to render one element sharp against a soft surround, so the sharpness itself selects the subject; one of the most direct ways to direct the viewer's eye. Sharpness functions as emphasis — the one sharp thing in a soft frame is where the eye is compelled to land. (Chapter 4)

Sense of place — The quality that makes a photograph belong unmistakably to one location and no other; if removed, the picture becomes a generic image that could have been made anywhere. It lives in the particulars — the quality of light, the color of walls, the script on signs, the way people stand — rather than in the famous landmark.

Sensor — the flat chip of silicon at the back of a digital camera, ruled into millions of tiny light-collecting wells, that converts the pattern of focused light falling on it into an electrical signal the camera can save as a file. The modern descendant of film, and the single component most responsible for image quality. Photosite — a single light-collecting well on the sensor; during the exposure it gathers photons and reports how much light fell on its one tiny spot. Roughly one photosite produces one pixel. A microscopic bucket left out in a rain of light. Focal length — the distance (in millimetres) from a lens's optical center to the sensor when focused on a far subject; in working terms, the spec that sets how much of the scene the lens takes in and how large things appear. Short focal length = wide angle, things small/distant; long focal length = narrow angle, things magnified. Angle of view — how wide a cone of the world a lens captures, expressed as an angle; it moves opposite to focal length (short focal length → wide angle; long focal length → narrow angle). Crop factor — the amount by which a sensor smaller than full-frame (about 36 × 24 mm) narrows the effective field of view a given lens delivers; e.g. an APS-C sensor's crop factor makes a 35mm lens frame more like a ~50mm lens would on full-frame. It changes the field of view, not the lens's actual focal length. Megapixel — one million pixels (image dots); the spec that measures an image's resolution (how many dots), which is how much you can crop or how large you can print, not its quality. Past roughly 12 MP you have had "enough" for most uses for years. Pixel pitch — the center-to-center distance between photosites, usually in microns (µm); a larger pixel pitch generally means a cleaner image in low light, making it a useful proxy for low-light quality. Bayer array — a checkerboard of tiny red, green, and blue color filters laid directly over the photosites, one color per well, so each photosite measures only one color of light; it uses twice as many green filters as red or blue because the human eye is most sensitive to green. Also called a Bayer color-filter array. Demosaicing — the in-camera process that reconstructs the two missing colors at every photosite by intelligently estimating them from neighboring wells, turning the one-color-per-site Bayer data into a full-color image at every pixel. The occasional visible failure of this guessing on very fine repeating detail is moiré. RAW — a file format that records the sensor's original measurements with minimal processing, leaving the creative decisions (white balance, tone, color, sharpening) to the photographer later; the "undeveloped negative." Larger than a JPEG, not directly shareable, and requiring processing, but it preserves full tonal latitude, resettable white balance, and recoverable highlight and shadow detail. JPEG — a compressed, finished, universally readable image file in which the camera has already made and permanently baked in every processing decision (demosaicing, white balance, color, tone, noise reduction, sharpening, and compression); small, instant, and sufficient for most photographs, but its baked-in decisions largely cannot be undone — you cannot un-bake a JPEG. Image processor — the small dedicated computer inside every camera that runs the digital pipeline from the sensor's raw signal to a finished picture: demosaicing, white balance, color and tone, noise reduction, sharpening, and compression. The "digital darkroom inside every device."

Sequencing — The craft of arranging a photo essay's order using four tools: rhythm (alternating scale, density, and energy), pairing (adjacent frames that create meaning in the gap between them), pacing (controlling how fast the essay moves), and the cut (what you place next to what, and what you omit).

Sharpening for output — A final, small sharpening pass applied on export and tuned to how the image will be viewed — separate from any sharpening done while developing. It counteracts the specific softening introduced by resizing an image down for the web (the resampling blurs fine edges) or by printing (ink spreads into the paper). Screen and paper need different amounts: a modest sharpen for a screen resize, a stronger one for print, and more for matte paper than for glossy. (Chapter 25)

Short lighting — Lighting the side of the face turned away from the camera, so the shadow falls on the side nearest the lens; this slims the face and adds drama, and is the more commonly flattering choice for most faces. (Chapter 12)

Shutter speed — How long the shutter stays open to let light reach the sensor, written as a fraction of a second (1/1000 s, 1/30 s) or in whole seconds for long exposures (1 s, 30 s); the second exposure control, where double the time means double the light. Its creative side effect is motion — a fast (short) speed freezes movement, a slow (long) speed blurs it; it also governs camera shake. (Chapter 3)

Side light — Light striking the subject from roughly 90° to the side, raking across it so one side is lit and the other falls into shadow; the photographer's workhorse direction because it reveals texture and three-dimensional form. (Chapter 5)

Silhouette — A subject reduced to a dark shape against a brighter background, produced by backlight when the exposure is set for the bright background so the subject goes black. (Chapter 5)

Single autofocus (AF-S) — The autofocus mode (also "One-Shot") in which the camera focuses once when the shutter is half-pressed, then locks and holds that distance until released; used for static subjects — portraits, landscapes, still life, architecture. (Chapter 4)

Small-sensor limits — The cluster of genuine constraints a phone's small sensor imposes: more noise in low light (it must amplify harder), narrower dynamic range (a smaller span from shadow to highlight held in one exposure), deep depth of field that is hard to blur a background out of, and weak true telephoto reach. Each has a specific technique that works around it; none of them touch the four creative decisions. (Chapter 22)

Soft light — Light from a large source (large relative to the subject — e.g. an overcast sky, a big window, a softbox, bounced light) that produces gentle, gradual shadows with smooth transitions; flattering, forgiving, and the most reliable portrait light. (Chapter 5)

Softbox — An enclosed fabric modifier (black outside, reflective inside, diffusion panel across the front) that turns a hard flash into a clean, soft, controlled rectangle of light that exits only the front. Shapes include rectangle (window-like), strip (slim edge light), and octa/octabox (round catchlight). The do-everything portrait modifier. (Chapter 12)

Specular highlight — The bright, mirror-like reflection of the light source itself bounced off a glossy surface at a sharp angle; it moves across the surface as the angle between source, surface, and viewer changes. Diffuse reflection — Light that hits a surface and scatters in all directions more or less evenly, so the surface looks the same brightness from any angle and reveals its true color and rounded form (matte paper, wood, fabric, skin, fruit flesh). Tabletop lighting — The practice of lighting small objects on a table or working surface, typically with one main source close to the subject, controlled with diffusion and bounce; the foundation under most product and food images. Sweep — A single continuous sheet of background material curved smoothly from horizontal (under the object) up to vertical (behind it), with no hard corner or seam, so the object appears to float in a continuous, edgeless field of tone; also called a cove. Focus stacking — Shooting a series of frames of the same still composition, each focused a little further back, then merging them in software so only the sharp part of each frame is kept, yielding one image sharp front-to-back at a moderate, diffraction-free aperture. Styling — The craft of preparing and arranging food (and props) so it photographs at its most appealing: choosing the best individual pieces, building height and structure, controlling mess, adding the garnish and gesture, and capturing it at its peak freshness window. Hero angle — The camera position chosen to show a subject at its most appealing; for food, typically straight down (flat lay) for top-interest dishes, three-quarter (~45°) for most plated mains, or eye level for tall, layered subjects.

Speedlight — A small, portable, battery-powered flash unit (also called a flashgun or hotshoe flash) that mounts on a camera's hotshoe or sits on a stand; the kind of flash most photographers own, and the workhorse of off-camera lighting on a budget. (Chapter 11)

Split lighting — The key placed 90° to the side of the subject so light hits exactly half the face and the other half falls into shadow, divided down the middle by the nose. The most dramatic of the four patterns; used deliberately for character and edge, not as a default. (Chapter 12)

Split toning — The older, simpler version of zone-based color tinting: apply one color tint to the shadows and another to the highlights, each with its own hue and saturation, with a balance control deciding where the handoff falls. Inherited from darkroom chemical toning.

Stage (decisive-moment stage) — A spot the photographer identifies in advance where, if the right thing happened, it would be a photograph: a place combining good light, a clean or rhyming background, and reliable foot traffic. The inversion at the heart of anticipation is to find a stage and let subjects walk into the prepared frame, rather than chasing subjects. (Chapter 10)

Star trail — The long, curved streak each star draws across the frame over a very long exposure (or a stacked sequence of many exposures), recording the apparent rotation of the sky; aimed near the celestial pole, the stars wheel as concentric arcs around a still centre. The deliberate opposite of a point-star exposure: where the 500 rule fights the Earth's rotation, the star trail celebrates it. (Chapter 21)

Stop — A doubling or halving of light, and the universal unit for every exposure control: up one stop is twice the light, down one stop is half. Because a stop is a stop regardless of which control produced it, light gained on one control can be given back on another. N stops equals $2^N$ times the light (3 stops = 8×, not 3×); cameras let you adjust in one-third-stop increments for fine control. (Chapter 3)

Street photography — The practice of making candid, unposed photographs of everyday life in public places — ordinary people, ordinary streets, no arrangement and usually no permission asked in advance — in order to find meaning, beauty, humor, or feeling in the unscripted moment. Not about famous places or dramatic events but about the corner you walk past every day, seen by someone who is actually looking. Its native mode is the candid, and its discipline is seeing and nerve. (Chapter 17)

Strobe — A larger, more powerful studio flash unit (also called a monolight), usually mains-powered and mounted on a stand; works on the same principle as a speedlight but with more output, used in studio settings. (Chapter 11)

Style — The consistent, recognizable pattern that emerges across a body of work from the choices a photographer reliably makes about light, subject, distance, color, placement, and moment; the visual "handwriting" that makes images look unmistakably theirs. It is an output (discovered by looking back at one's work), not an input (a look chosen and applied), and is distinct from a preset, a filter, or a genre.

Subject-detection autofocus — Autofocus that automatically detects and tracks specific kinds of subject — human faces and eyes, and increasingly animals, birds, and vehicles — across the frame, so the photographer need not place a point by hand. (Chapter 4)

T

The 500 rule — A rule of thumb estimating the longest exposure (in seconds) that keeps stars looking like points rather than streaks for a given lens: 500 ÷ the lens's focal length in 35mm-equivalent millimetres. Wider lenses allow longer exposures (and gather more starlight) before the Earth's rotation smears the stars. A stricter "300 rule" gives crisper points on high-resolution sensors. (Chapter 21)

The decisive moment — The single instant when the visual elements of a scene in motion — the gesture, expression, and the arrangement of every shape in the frame — come together to express the meaning of what is happening; the one frame, out of the thousands that flow past, where the photograph is complete, because a fraction of a second earlier or later some essential part of it has not yet arrived or has already left. Coined (in English) as the title of Henri Cartier-Bresson's 1952 book The Decisive Moment (French: Images à la sauvette); defined by him as the simultaneous recognition of the significance of an event and the precise organization of forms that expresses it. The decisiveness belongs to the photographer, who must anticipate the moment — not to the moment, which never announces itself. Applies to photographs of life in motion; for static subjects, timing barely matters. (Chapter 10)

The edit (noun) — The selection that constitutes a body of work: the act of deciding which images are in the set and which are out. Its governing rule is to choose for the set, not for the single image — a strong frame is cut if it repeats what a better frame says, breaks the set's mood, or is merely good among greats. Done in graduated passes (reject, select, set), ideally with a second pair of eyes; deciding the number first ("exactly twelve") forces the comparison where real editing happens. (Distinct from editing in the develop sense; defined in Chapter 34.) Sequencing — The order in which a viewer encounters the images in a body of work, and what image sits beside what. A form of authorship that creates meaning between frames: two photographs side by side make a "third thing," and a quiet frame can become an ending only because of what precedes it. Its grammar: open strong but not loudest, build a loud/quiet rhythm so the set breathes, make neighbors "talk," and end on a resolving note. (Chapter 34.) Print (fine-art) — A deliberately made physical photograph on paper, judged and finished as an object rather than a file — the truest, most honest test of a photograph. A screen emits light (flattering contrast and saturation) while a print only reflects the room's light, so every tonal decision must stand on its own; a print also holds at a fixed, often large size that exposes weak corners. Made from the full-resolution master, output-sharpened more than for screen (ink spreads), on a paper chosen to suit the work; most photographers use a lab, not their own printer. (Chapter 34.) Portfolio site — A website you own or fully control whose sole purpose is to present your best photographs as you intend — in your sequence, free of advertising and distraction — as opposed to a social feed (rented land, mixed with ads, sized and ordered by an algorithm). Its job is singular: let a viewer see your strongest work, understand who you are, and contact you. Structure: a landing that is the work, a few tight sequenced galleries, an About page with your statement, and a frictionless contact path. (Chapter 34.) Artist statement — A short piece of prose (most often a single tight paragraph) that tells a viewer, in plain language, what your work is concerned with and what you are after. It situates the work — pointing the viewer toward what to notice — but does not explain individual images ("this means X"). A strong one has a concrete subject, your honest approach, plain language, and an invitation to notice; it omits jargon, biography/résumé, and apology. (Chapter 34.) Platform aspect ratios — The width-to-height proportions each sharing platform favors or auto-crops to — chiefly 1:1 (square), 4:5 (tall feed portrait that "stops the scroll"), 9:16 (full-screen vertical for stories/short video), and 16:9 (wide/cinematic). Uploading the wrong shape lets the platform crop your frame for you, usually badly; the permanent discipline is to crop to the destination's ratio yourself, in your own editor, so you place the edges. (Exact pixel sizes change constantly; the shapes are stable. Chapter 34.) Vanity metric — A number a platform shows you that feels like feedback but measures the wrong thing — most notably a "like" count, which rewards instant legibility (saturation, trends, familiar faces) rather than quality. Better signals of whether work is landing: saved posts, thoughtful comments, direct messages, profile visits, and prints sold. (Chapter 34.) The firewall (sharing) — The discipline that keeps social media from deforming your seeing: the work is decided before the platform sees it. What you shoot and how you see are settled upstream, in you; posting is the last step of the process, never the first thought — which prevents the feed from reaching backward to redirect your camera toward whatever "performed." (Chapter 34.)

The edit (of a body of work) — The selection and ordering of images from a larger body of work: deciding what stays, what goes, and in what order. The most underrated skill in photography; a body of work is the photographs you kept, in the order you put them, not the ones you took.

The four decisions — The four choices present in every photograph: the light (what illuminates the subject), the moment (when the shutter is released), the frame (what is included and excluded), and the focus (what is sharp, and therefore what the image is about). (Chapter 1)

The frame — The rectangle a photographer chooses to cut out of the continuous world; every photograph is an act of exclusion, and where the edges fall (what is included and left out) is one of the photographer's most powerful tools. (Chapter 1)

The geometry of the instant — Cartier-Bresson's "organization of forms" made temporal: the arrangement of shapes in the frame at a given moment, which snaps in and out of order as a scene moves; the decisive frame is the instant the shapes lock into an order that feels inevitable (a visual rhyme, a clean separation of subject from background, a balanced fill) at the same time the gesture or expression peaks. Composition (Chapter 6) applied to time. (Chapter 10)

The gift — The earned luck a prepared photographer receives: the moment the world hands to whoever has done everything to deserve it (read the stage, fixed the frame, prefocused, waited, ready). Distinguished from lottery luck, because it can only be received by a photographer who is prepared for it. (Chapter 10)

The Light Log — A daily observational practice — a running note of two or three sentences recording some light the photographer noticed and what it was doing (its direction, quality, and color, and its effect on the subject); the seeing-discipline backbone launched in this chapter and matured into a daily practice in Chapter 37. (Chapter 5)

The long-term project — A sustained, deliberate body of photographic work made over an extended period (months, years, or decades) that returns again and again to a single subject, place, theme, or question in order to understand it more deeply than any single visit could allow; its defining behavior is return, and its payoff is depth.

The photo sequence — A small, ordered set of images — wide to tight, context to detail — that together convey a place far more completely than any single frame can. Built in three ranges: the establishing shot ("where are we?"), the medium/scene shot ("what happens here?"), and the detail/close-up ("what does it feel like?"). One photograph is a sentence; a sequence is a paragraph with a shape.

The recognizable body of work — A collection of images, made over time, unified by a consistent style and vision so strongly that a viewer can identify the photographer without being told, and that says something larger than any single frame can. Built from consistency, not novelty; the destination of a photographic practice.

The right of publicity — A person's right to control the commercial use of their own name, image, and likeness. Distinct from privacy (the right to be left alone) and from copyright (which protects the photograph and belongs to the photographer).

The through-line — The single spine of meaning that runs through a whole essay — the one thing it is about (as distinct from what it is of). Every frame must serve it; the through-line editing pass removes even excellent frames that wander off the spine.

The two-exposure model — The framing of every flash photograph as two separate exposures layered in one frame — the ambient exposure and the flash exposure — controlled by different dials: shutter speed sets the ambient only, flash power sets the flash only, while aperture and ISO affect both. The core mental model of flash photography. (Chapter 11)

The working hypothesis — Your tentative, specific, testable bet about what a project is about, formed at the start and refined (or replaced) by the act of shooting; the door you walk through, not a locked conclusion. A good one is concrete and accessible; expect it to drift toward the truer subject the frames reveal.

Tonal range — The full span of grays in a black-and-white image, from the darkest black through every middle gray to the brightest white. Contrast (tonal) — How spread out an image's tones are: a high-contrast image has deep blacks and bright whites with little midtone (punchy, graphic); a low-contrast image lives mostly in the middle grays (soft, atmospheric). Mid-tone — A gray near the middle of the tonal scale; the exact midpoint is Zone V, middle gray — the tone a light meter assumes it is pointed at. High-key — An image dominated by light tones — bright and airy, with little shadow. Low-key — An image dominated by dark tones — moody and shadow-heavy, with small lit areas. Tonal separation — Adjacent elements in a monochrome image rendering as clearly different grays, so the picture stays legible and the subject stands apart from its background. Tonal merger — Two distinct things collapsing into the same gray because they share the same value, so the boundary between them disappears (e.g. a mid-red subject on mid-green foliage). The Zone System — A method developed by Ansel Adams and Fred Archer for deliberately placing a scene's important tones at chosen points on a scale of eleven zones (0 = pure black, V = middle gray, X = pure white), each one stop apart. Previsualization — Seeing the finished photograph — its tones, contrast, and structure — in your mind before you press the shutter, then using craft to realize that vision (the screen confirms rather than discovers).

Travel kit — The photographic gear you carry on the road, governed by the one-bag principle: not the most capability you own, but the most capability you will actually carry all day — one bag, comfortable for hours, carry-on legal. Every item must earn its weight by answering "is this worth its weight, every day, for the pictures it uniquely makes?" The guiding idea is versatility per gram.

Triadic harmony — Three hues spaced equally (about 120°) around the color wheel (red–yellow–blue, or orange–green–violet). Vibrant but balanced and playful; harder to find in nature, so it usually comes from the made world — markets, signage, painted buildings. Works best when one of the three is allowed to dominate. (Chapter 7)

TTL (through-the-lens) flash metering — A mode in which the camera automatically sets flash power by metering the scene (often firing a brief pre-flash); fast and convenient for changing distances, but, like any auto mode, it can be fooled and can drift frame to frame. (Chapter 11)

U

Umbrella — A cheap, fast soft-light modifier: shoot-through (white, fire the flash through it) or reflective (black-backed, fire into it). Big, soft, and forgiving, but sprays light everywhere, making it hard to keep off the background or control precisely. (Chapter 12)

Usage rights — The specific permissions a license grants, defined along several dimensions: the media (web, print, packaging, ads), the duration (term), the geography, and exclusivity. Anything not granted is not permitted. (Chapter 35)

V

Value — Also called luminance. The color's brightness — how light or dark it is, independent of hue and saturation; the grey a color becomes in a black-and-white conversion. The dimension that does the most structural work, because value (not hue) is what the eye uses to find edges and read shape. A pale sky-blue and a deep navy are the same hue at very different values. (Chapter 7)

Vision — The reason a photographer makes pictures: the consistent set of ideas, feelings, questions, or values that a body of work returns to and explores; why the photographs exist beyond "this looked nice." Deeper than style, it is usually small, specific, and personal, and is found by asking "what do I keep photographing when no one is making me?"

Visual storytelling — Using images, in sequence, to carry a viewer through an experience — to make them feel they have been somewhere or come to understand something — rather than merely showing a set of attractive individual pictures.

Visual weight — How strongly a given element in a frame attracts and holds the eye — its perceptual "heaviness." Increased by large size, brightness and high contrast, saturated or warm color (especially red), faces/eyes/people/text, sharpness against softness, and position near an edge.

Voice — The recognizability of a photographer's work — the identifiable "hand" a viewer can detect without a label; style and vision made consistent enough that the photographs are unmistakably one person's. A voice is discovered through consistent honest seeing, not constructed for an audience.

W

Warm colors — The reds, oranges, and yellows on one half of the color wheel — the colors of sun, fire, skin, and sunset. They appear to advance (come toward the viewer) and read as comforting, intimate, nostalgic, or energetic. (Chapter 7)

White balance — The camera setting (or editing adjustment) that tells the camera what the neutral color of the current light is, so it can render whites as white and the rest of the colors accurately; understood in this book as a creative decision (whether to keep or neutralize a color cast), not merely a correctness problem. (Chapter 5)

Work-for-hire — The main exception to automatic photographer ownership: an arrangement (by specific written agreement or an employment relationship) in which the copyright belongs to the hiring party from the moment of creation. A premium thing to sell, because the photographer gives up all future income from the images. (Chapter 35)

Writing with light — The literal meaning of "photography," used as the book's core mental model: light is the medium and the photograph is a deliberate construction, so you are always photographing how light interacts with objects, never the objects themselves. (Chapter 1)

Z

Zone focusing — A focusing technique in which you pre-set the lens to a fixed distance and use a small aperture so that a whole zone of distance — from somewhat nearer than the focus point to somewhat farther — falls within acceptable sharpness, so anything within that zone is in focus the instant it appears, with no autofocus delay. Trades the precision of focusing on one exact plane for the speed of having an entire range pre-focused; on the street, where the subject appears and is gone in a second, speed wins. Rests on depth of field (Ch.4): smaller aperture → wider zone. (Chapter 17)
