Traditional statistics capture the outcomes of these decisions--points scored, assists recorded, turnovers committed--but fail to capture the quality of the decisions themselves. A player might make a brilliant pass that leads to a missed shot, or stumble into an assist on a lucky bounce. Conventional metrics cannot distinguish between these scenarios.

Expected Possession Value (EPV) represents a paradigm shift in basketball analytics, moving from outcome-based evaluation to process-based assessment. Developed by Dan Cervone, Alexander D'Amour, Luke Bornn, and Kirk Goldsberry in their seminal 2014 paper "A Multiresolution Stochastic Process Model for Predicting Basketball Possession Outcomes," EPV provides a real-time valuation of every moment in a basketball possession.

The fundamental insight is elegant: at any instant during a possession, we can estimate the expected number of points that will result by the possession's end. This expectation depends on everything observable at that moment--the ball's location, all ten players' positions and velocities, the shot clock, and the game situation. As the possession unfolds, this expected value changes continuously, rising and falling with each action and reaction.

14.1 Real-Time Game Valuation: The Conceptual Framework

14.1.1 From Outcomes to Expectations

Traditional basketball statistics operate in a binary world of outcomes. A shot either goes in or it doesn't; a pass either leads to a basket or it doesn't. This binary thinking ignores the continuous nature of basketball decision-making and the probabilistic reality that underlies every action.

Consider a simple example: a player catches the ball in the corner with a defender closing out. They face three primary options: 1. Shoot the open three (expected outcome depends on shooter's ability and defender's proximity) 2. Drive baseline toward the rim (expected outcome depends on help defense positioning) 3. Pass to a teammate (expected outcome depends on where that pass leads)

Each option has an associated expected value--the average points that would result if that action were taken. The optimal decision is the one that maximizes this expectation, subject to risk considerations and game context.

  • Falling EPV: The defense is winning the possession--forcing the ball to a poor shooter, cutting off driving lanes, or causing hesitation that runs down the shot clock.

  • EPV Discontinuities: Certain events cause sudden jumps in EPV. A turnover drops EPV to zero (or negative, if we consider transition opportunities). A made shot realizes the full value. A missed shot creates a rebound situation with its own expected value.

The EPV curve provides a narrative of the possession that statistics alone cannot capture. Figure 14.1 illustrates a typical possession showing how EPV evolves with each action.

14.1.3 The Value of Actions
