The reading that is not reading
Ten venues, surveyed. (Exercise E.1)
There is no substitute and there is no book. A planner who has walked ten venues in their own market with a tape measure and the 34 questions knows something no publication contains, because venue characteristics are entirely local and largely unpublished.
Do it in a season and keep the files. Doorway widths, panel ratings, access windows, curfews, rain-plan measurements, and the answers to questions 33 and 34. Within two years this is the most valuable document you own after your vendor file.
On space and capacity
Any architectural or interior design data reference. (Tier 1)
Neufert's Architects' Data and Time-Saver Standards for Building Types are the classic references, and both contain assembly-occupancy planning data: space allowances per person by function, table and seating geometries, circulation widths, and service clearances. They are aimed at people designing permanent buildings, and the data transfers directly to laying out a temporary one.
What to look for: seating layout dimensions (round table diameters against occupancy, aisle and service clearances), circulation widths, and assembly space allowances. Chapter 11 uses all of it.
Model fire code material on assembly occupancy and means of egress. (Tier 2)
You will not calculate occupancy loads yourself and you should not try. Understanding the inputs — square feet per occupant by use, number and width of exits, travel distance — lets you recognize when a venue's stated capacity is a marketing number, which is §10.7's finding. The concepts are stable; the specific figures depend on the adopted code and the authority having jurisdiction.
On the sun
Any sun-position calculator or app. (Tier 1, free)
Several free tools give azimuth and elevation for any date, time, and location, and some overlay the sun's path on a map or a photograph. This is a twenty-second lookup that determines whether a ceremony works, and almost no planner does it.
What to learn once: at a given latitude, roughly where the sun sits at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., and 6 p.m. in your busiest months. After a season you will be able to look at a ceremony orientation and know the answer before you check.
Anything on natural-light photography. (Tier 2)
Not to become a photographer — to understand why a backlit ceremony is a problem and what a photographer can and cannot recover. The relevant concepts are dynamic range and the trade between exposing for faces and exposing for sky. Twenty pages will make Chapter 23's timeline arguments obvious rather than technical.
On the venue's side of the table
Hotel and venue sales training material. (Tier 2)
Understanding how venues are sold to you is worth an afternoon. Venue sales roles are compensated on booked revenue and on F&B minimums, the site visit is a designed experience, and the sequence — visit, then contract — exists because it works. None of this is sinister and all of it explains why §10.6's sequencing rule matters.
Hotel contract material aimed at meeting planners. (Tier 1)
The corporate meetings side has thought far harder about venue contracts than the wedding side, because the sums are larger and the buyers are professional. Material on attrition clauses, cancellation schedules, and F&B minimums in the meetings context is directly transferable and considerably more rigorous than anything wedding-specific. Chapter 31 returns to it.
Allen, Judy. Event Planning. Wiley. (Tier 1)
Her site-inspection material is the most substantial in the published events literature. It is oriented toward corporate events at hotels and conference centres, which means it is stronger on the questions this chapter groups under "access and infrastructure" and lighter on the emotional dimension of a couple choosing a place. Read it for the checklist discipline.
On the decision itself
Anything on multi-criteria decision analysis or weighted scoring. (Tier 2)
The scorecard in §10.5 is a simple weighted additive model, and the literature on such models is worth twenty minutes for one reason: it will teach you their known failure modes. Weights are unstable, criteria are rarely independent, and people adjust weights after seeing results to get the answer they wanted.
All three of those happen constantly in venue selection, and knowing them makes you better at the sensitivity check — change one weight and see whether the winner changes. If it does, the decision was never really about the criteria.
Kahneman, Daniel. Thinking, Fast and Slow. (Tier 1)
Recommended repeatedly and relevant here for affect heuristic — the tendency to let an emotional impression drive judgments of unrelated attributes. A couple who loves a venue will rate its parking, its rain plan, and its access window more generously than the same features at a venue they do not love.
This is the specific cognitive mechanism the scorecard is fighting, and it is also why the weights must be set before the visits.
On raw sites specifically
Tent company technical material. (Tier 2)
Tent suppliers publish sizing charts, layout diagrams, and installation requirements, and they are genuinely useful. Learn: tent sizes against guest counts for different configurations, what flooring costs and when it is required, what a sidewall does and does not do, and what heating a tent actually takes. Chapter 13 covers it; the suppliers' own material is the best source.
Anything on temporary power distribution. (Tier 2)
You will not design a distribution system. You need enough to ask a production company the right question and to recognize when a venue's "we've never had a band and a caterer at once" is a warning. Chapter 18 covers the load arithmetic.
What to be careful with
Venue directories and marketplace listings. They are useful for finding venues and useless for evaluating them. Capacities are marketing figures, "included" lists are incomplete, and the absence of a constraint from a listing means nothing at all.
Photographs, including your own. A room photographs at its best from one corner in one light with nothing in it. §10.4's instruction to photograph systematically rather than attractively exists because a planner's own photographs will otherwise flatter a venue as much as the venue's do.
Any capacity figure not attached to a configuration. "Holds 175" is not a fact. "Holds 175 standing, 150 seated, 120 seated with a dance floor and a band" is three facts, and only the third one plans a wedding.
Your own preference. A planner who prefers all-inclusive venues because they are less work — which is a real and rational preference, worth 25–45 hours — must be careful that the preference does not enter the scorecard anywhere except the "planner hours" line, where it belongs and is disclosed.
A note on what is missing
There is no published, rigorous methodology for pricing a venue all-in. Consumer wedding content compares site fees; industry material discusses contracts; nothing assembles the seven steps.
That gap is why §10.2 exists, and why both mini-projects ask you to build the artifact rather than read about it. The most useful thing you can do after this chapter is price four real venues in your own market properly, once — and then keep doing one a quarter.
The claim that the all-in ranking routinely inverts the site-fee ranking is trade observation, not measurement. Exercise E.1 asks you to test it across ten venues. If it does not hold in your market, that is a genuine finding and worth reporting — see the contributing guide.
