This chapter has a research literature and it is not the event industry's. Safety science, high-reliability organising, incident command, and the psychology of disaster response have all studied the thing this chapter describes, at higher stakes, with real data. Almost nothing published about weddings will improve on §28.4 or §28.8. These will.
One honest note before the list. §28.8 — the unsolvable crisis — is the section of this book with the least evidence behind it and the strongest claims in it. It is the author's practice, stated as recommendation. The bereavement and disaster-response literature is the closest thing to a check on it, and it is listed for that reason rather than because it is about events.
Tier 1 — Verifiable published sources
Why prepared systems fail anyway
- Reason, James. Human Error and Managing the Risks of Organizational Accidents. The most useful pair on this list. Reason's distinction between active failures and latent conditions is exactly Case Study 28.2's finding: the 89 was a latent condition sitting in a document for eighteen chapters, and no amount of day-of vigilance would have found it. The "Swiss cheese" model is his and it is widely misused; read the original.
- Perrow, Charles. Normal Accidents: Living with High-Risk Technologies. The argument that in tightly coupled systems, failures are a property of the structure rather than of anybody's decisions. Case Study 28.1's counterfactual — where every step is reasonable and the outcome is a disaster — is a small, harmless instance of Perrow's thesis.
- Dekker, Sidney. The Field Guide to Understanding "Human Error" and Drift into Failure. Dekker is the corrective to blame-based post-incident reviews, and §28.9's insistence that the incident note contain no speculation about cause is his influence.
- Vaughan, Diane. The Challenger Launch Decision. Long, and the concept of normalisation of deviance — the gradual acceptance of a signal because it has never yet caused harm — is worth the length. It is the mechanism by which "the barn seats 89" stayed in a file.
High-reliability organising
- Weick, Karl E. and Kathleen Sutcliffe. Managing the Unexpected. Chapter 27's recommendation and it is more relevant here. The five principles — preoccupation with failure, reluctance to simplify, sensitivity to operations, commitment to resilience, deference to expertise — are a better summary of this chapter than the chapter's own summary.
- Weick, Karl E. "The Collapse of Sensemaking in Organizations: The Mann Gulch Disaster" (1993), Administrative Science Quarterly. Read this one. Twenty pages, free in most libraries, and it is about firefighters who died partly because they would not drop their tools. It is the best thing written about §28.4a — what a crisis costs you that it is not about.
Incident command and structured response
- Any current documentation on the Incident Command System (ICS). A single named incident commander, explicit span of control, and formal handoffs — the structure §28.3 and Chapter 27's §27.8a arrive at independently, formalised by people whose failures kill.
- Your national or regional guidance on event safety. In the UK, the Purple Guide to Health, Safety and Welfare at Music and Other Events is the standard reference and is not free. In the US, NFPA 101 and local fire-marshal requirements govern occupancy and egress. Whatever applies where you work, read the occupancy and egress sections at least once — §28.5a's four-minute site check comes straight out of them.
- Marquee and temporary-structure wind guidance from your national trade body. §28.2a's claim that wind is the only weather that produces a genuine safety stop is defensible only because these documents exist and are specific.
Decisions under time pressure and uncertainty
- Klein, Gary. Sources of Power. Chapter 27's recommendation, and the chapter on the pre-mortem is the one that matters here: imagining the failure in advance and working backward. §28.4's playbook is a pre-mortem with the output written down.
- Kahneman, Daniel. Thinking, Fast and Slow — specifically on outcome bias, which is Case Study 28.1's DQ2 and one of the two hardest ideas in this chapter. A decision made well under uncertainty stays well made when it turns out badly.
- Tetlock, Philip and Dan Gardner. Superforecasting. On forecast interpretation, and the reason §28.2 insists on probability and expected amount rather than "chance of rain."
Emergencies involving people
- Any recognised first-aid certification. This is not a reading recommendation. A two-day certificate is the single highest-value thing in this chapter and it costs about what one uplighter costs.
- The anaphylaxis guidance from your national allergy body. Chapter 14's protocol and §28.5's later-service-points warning both derive from it. Read the actual guidance, not a summary.
- On death and serious illness at public events: the disaster-response and bereavement-support literature — search psychological first aid, and the WHO/War Trauma Foundation guide of that name, which is free. §28.8's containment sequence is an amateur's version of what that document formalises, and the difference between them is worth seeing.
The emotional labour
- Hochschild, Arlie Russell. The Managed Heart. Carried forward from Chapter 27, and it applies harder here. "Never look worried" during a genuine crisis is a real cost borne by a real person and it should be named rather than admired.
Tier 2 — Attributed professional practice
- The three kinds of crisis. The author's, and the third category is the one that is not standard in event-industry material.
- The five parts of a rain plan, and the claim that the crew is always the missing one. Practice, and exercise C.1 tests half of it.
- The deadline computed backward from physical work. Practice, and it is generalisable — but the specific 45-minute pre-arrival buffer is Chapter 13's convention, not a standard.
- "If it is 50/50, go indoors." The author's, and the asymmetry argument behind it is the justification. Exercise D.1 attacks the case where there is no physical work.
- The four substitutability categories. The author's construction. Category assignments are arguable and exercise D.3 argues one of them — the videographer's placement in C is the weakest.
- The ten-minute no-show sequence. Practice, ordered by the author.
- "Late with no contact is treated as absent." Practice, and the strongest single recommendation in the chapter, because it is free and it changes outcomes.
- The degradation ladder, including the floor column. The author's, and the resistance to writing it is an observation rather than a finding.
- The four category-D vendors. Practice, and defensible for weddings specifically. A corporate event's category D is different and Chapter 31 will say so.
- §28.6's can/cannot table. The author's, stated with more confidence than evidence, and exercise D.5 says so.
- The four-element structure for telling a couple. Practice, and it is borrowed from what good clinicians do.
- §28.8's six containment steps. The author's, and see the note at the top of this file.
- The incident note's contents and its three reasons. Practice, and the insurance reason is the one that has been tested.
Tier 3 — Illustrative and constructed
All case-study material. Ilse Brandvold, Kettleback Estate, and the Nakamura–Fell wedding; the Reyes–Whitfield rain plan and its arithmetic; the Harvest & Thyme resolution. All constructed.
Two specific notes.
The Reyes–Whitfield capacity arithmetic — 1,944 gross, 1,068 usable, 89 at twelve square feet, 211 at six — is internally consistent and the square-footage figures are conventional planning rules of thumb rather than code. Occupancy in a real building is determined by egress, not by area, and a barn with a 32-inch doorway may be limited far below either number by the fire authority. The case study's finding is about how a number propagates through documents; it is not permission to seat 211 people anywhere.
The Harvest & Thyme resolution is the payoff to a device set up in Chapter 1, and Case Study 28.2's DQ6 asks whether the book chose too kind an ending. That question is genuinely open and the author's answer is given in the discussion note rather than hidden.
Where to go next
Read Weick on Mann Gulch. Twenty pages. It is about firefighters and it is about you.
Get a first-aid certificate. Two days. Nothing else in this chapter has a better ratio of cost to consequence.
Do exercise C.7 — the four-minute site check for exits, extinguishers, and assembly point — at the next venue you are in for any reason. Then notice whether anyone would have told you.
Write your degradation ladder (C.5), including the floor column, and notice your resistance to it. That resistance is the chapter's subject.
And do E.6. Write down, in advance, the circumstances in which you would stop an event you are being paid to run. One paragraph, and it is the only preparation §28.5a actually requires.
Chapter 29 preview
Guest experience and accessibility — and it opens with a finding this chapter produced and did not resolve: a track that fourteen guests over seventy walked, and one who could not.
Bring §28.8's containment sequence, and specifically item 3. Chapter 29's argument is that most of what makes a wedding difficult for a guest is invisible to everybody except the guest, and that the fix is almost always to ask rather than to provide.
