The one thing

After sunset, light does not illuminate the design — it is the list of what the design contains.

In daylight a room exists and light reveals it. After dark nothing exists until something lights it. Which makes lighting not a layer on top of a design but an enumeration of it — and the cheapest such enumeration available.


The ten claims

1. Five jobs: ambient, accent, feature, practical, effect. Specify by job, not by fixture. A room with jobs 1, 2, and 4 done well looks intentional. A room with only job 5 looks like a school disco — and job 5 is what the DJ brings.

2. A DJ's rig is not a lighting plan. It points at the dance floor, it moves, it is designed to be looked at rather than to light anything, and it is off until first dance — 60 to 120 minutes after the room goes dark. Ask every DJ in writing: what do you bring, where does it point, when do you turn it on?

3. Specify colour temperature as a number: 2,700 K or warmer, CRI 90+ on anything lighting a face or a plate. "Warm white" spans 2,700–4,000 K, and two colours of white in one room reads as a mistake to people who could not name it.

4. What you turn off is a lighting decision and it is free. A single unswitched 4,000 K fluorescent beats $900 of design. It needs a procedure, not an intention: walk the space, find every switch, and put it on the run sheet with a time and a name.

5. A plot needs eight things, and the two most often missing are circuit assignment and load per circuit — which are what make it a plot rather than a picture.

6. Power: sum → +25% → ÷1,000. The 25% is derated capacity for startup surge, not slack. Incandescent string draws ten times LED and can add a generator size — roughly $280–$510 for the filament look, which is a price to quote rather than a request to refuse. And LED filament-style bulbs exist at 2,200 K; ask by name.

7. Sound has a cheap floor and an expensive ceiling, and the failure that matters is at the floor. "We couldn't hear the vows" is the most common serious production failure at weddings. It costs $150–$300 and thirty minutes.

"Warm" and "moody" pull against each other and couples ask for both. Warm sources, fewer, further apart, at low intensity. And the tie-breaker whenever two design words conflict is reversibility — turning things off is free; adding fixtures at 7 p.m. is not.

"Bright" almost always means "not gloomy," not "high level." A gloomy room is usually cold or overhead-only. Raising the level makes it worse.

The most common placement error: uplighters flat against a wall. They give a bright oval and a dark wall. Angled and pulled out, the same fixture lights three times the area. Free, ten seconds, almost nobody does it.

The Reyes–Whitfield lighting spend is $730 against a $42,000 wedding, and the single most memorable visual moment costs nothing — one person, at one minute, throwing one switch that a rental crew was told to leave off six hours earlier.

Chapter 16 said a design that has not been scheduled is a wish. This is the same claim from the other end: sometimes the schedule is the entire design.


What this chapter added to the project

A cross-reference audit. Chapter 13 wrote "barn lighting, which the released money funded." It did not. The $3,008 rental reduction closed part of a $6,619 overage; nothing was released. This is the second budget cross-reference error in the project and both were written during a re-cut — hence the practice: any sentence containing "the released money" gets a number attached and re-checked before it is relied on.

The lighting spend, from what actually exists: DJ $1,300 (Ch.22) · ceremony sound $200 · 12 uplighters $420 · **barn festoon 200 ft, $310 · $70 held. **$2,300 exactly.

All twelve uplighters go in the barn and never move. The tent has 400 ft of string lighting and 26 votives and its sidewalls stay dark — a deliberate trade, on marginal returns: twelve fixtures move the barn from zero to lit and the tent from good to slightly better. And because the string is doing all the tent's work, it is five runs at 9 ft rather than three at 12 — Chapter 17's shorten, do not thin, in lighting.

The power budget, recomputed from real fixtures: 9,763 W required against a 10 kW generator. 237 W of margin — 97.6% of nameplate. And the 25% headroom is derated capacity, not slack, so the real position is that the design uses everything the generator has.

The risk is not a fixture. It is Sundown's 3,200 W, stated in an RFP in month six against a plated menu that became family style in Chapter 14. Nobody has re-confirmed it. One email at four weeks out either closes it or buys a 15 kW generator for $200, four weeks early instead of at 8 p.m.

And the −4 week question, to seven parties including the couple: "does anything you're bringing plug in?"

The ceremony: battery PA, 0 W, no cable run — plus a lav on Sam as well as the officiant, windscreens, a handheld for readings, and the four-minute test at Friday's rehearsal, which needs no equipment because it tests geometry rather than kit.

And the inline switch. The distro is 90 feet away behind a hedge, so a switched circuit there is useless at 7:20 p.m. A $12 inline switch at the DJ's table is what makes Sam's moment possible.

Spaced review

From Chapter 13: sum → +25% → ÷1,000. A 20-amp 120 V circuit gives 2,400 W nominal, 1,920 W usable at 80%. The 25% is not slack.

From Chapter 16: the four times of day. This chapter owns dark, during dinner — the longest sustained period of design scrutiny at a wedding and the hour when light is the only variable still operating.

From Chapter 17: shorten, do not thin, applied to 400 feet of string — five dense runs at 9 ft rather than three sparse ones at 12.

From Chapters 8 and 9: the contract's curfew and a licensing noise condition are separate instruments. A venue can be contractually compliant and in breach of its own licence at once — and the second lands on them, so they enforce it on you.


Before Chapter 19

Chapter 19 is stationery, signage, and guest communication — **the last chapter of Part IV and the one with the smallest budget in the book: $150**, after Chapter 16's audit found $700 taken from a $400 line.

It is also where Part IV's design work finally reaches a guest before the wedding, and where the repeated element carried since Chapter 16 either appears on paper or does not.

Bring the through-line, and bring the finding this chapter kept demonstrating: the highest-value intervention is frequently free, and it is almost always a decision about timing or about what somebody is told.
