Case Study 1: The Corner Dance Floor
Tier 3 — Illustrative. The Okonjo–Salas reception at the mill (first seen in Chapter 2's Case Study 2), and all observations here, are composites created for teaching. The pattern — an empty floor until 9:40 — is the most reliably observable layout failure in this industry.
The Room
A restored textile mill. 165 guests. 62 × 44 feet, brick, twenty-foot ceilings, tall windows down the west wall.
The venue's own floor plan — supplied to every client, used by every event held there — put the dance floor in the northeast corner, the band beside it on the north wall, the bar on the south wall by the entrance, and eighteen rounds filling the rest.
It fit. Every table had a clear line to the band. The service path was clean. Nothing about it was obviously wrong, and it had been used at perhaps two hundred weddings.

What Happened
The planner had worked four weddings at this venue and had watched the same thing each time. She timed it at the fourth.

Seventy-two minutes from the floor opening to it being full. From 8:41 to 9:44, the floor held between six and fourteen people out of 165 — and the band worked steadily harder throughout, which is what a band does when a floor is not filling.
The 9:44 moment is the tell. Nine people arriving together, from the tables furthest from the floor. They came as a group because arriving alone was too exposed, and they came at 9:44 because that was when enough people had accumulated that a group arrival was no longer conspicuous.
The Diagnosis
Three measurements explain it.

And the third measurement, which is the one nobody thinks of:
The bar is at the opposite end from the dance floor. A guest who gets a drink is 60 feet from the floor. A guest on the floor who wants a drink must leave it and cross the room, which means leaving is a 60-foot commitment and returning is another one. The bar and the floor at opposite ends of a room means people choose one or the other for the evening.
The Redesign
The planner proposed a plan to the venue — not to a client, to the venue, because the venue's own floor plan was the problem and every event there inherited it.

Four changes:
- Dance floor to the centre. Mean distance 43 ft → 19 ft. All eighteen tables have a direct view.
- Band moved to the south wall, adjacent to the floor and facing it — and, critically, near the existing power, which was the reason it had been on the north wall in the first place. A 60-foot power run and a cable ramp solved it for $180.
- Bar split in two. One at the entrance end, one at the north end. Same two bartenders, redistributed. The north bar is 24 feet from the dance floor.
- Two tables removed. The central floor plus circulation costs about 180 sq ft more than a corner floor, because a corner floor borrows two walls' worth of circulation. 165 guests into 16 tables of 10 rather than 18 of 9.
That last point is the honest cost and it is worth stating plainly: a central dance floor uses more floor area than a corner one. At a room already at capacity, it will cost you tables.
What Happened Next
The planner ran the new plan at the Okonjo–Salas wedding, and timed it again.

Thirty-seven minutes from opening to full, against seventy-two. And the shape is different — a steady climb rather than a flat line followed by a jump.
💰 Run the Numbers: what thirty-five minutes is worth
Nothing, directly. Nobody pays for dancing.
What it changed:

Thirteen more guests staying past 10 p.m. is thirteen people who had a better wedding, and it is the difference between a reception that ends because it is over and one that ends because it has to.
And it cost two tables and $180 of cable.
Why the Venue's Plan Was Wrong for Two Hundred Weddings
This is the part worth thinking about.
The venue's plan was not stupid. It was optimized for something real: it maximized table capacity. Eighteen tables instead of sixteen is eighteen more guests, and for a venue selling capacity that is the number that matters.
It also had two other rational origins:
The band was on the north wall because that is where the power was. The floor went beside the band because that is the obvious relationship. The corner placement was a consequence of an electrical panel, and nobody had ever asked whether $180 of cable would buy a better room.
And nobody had ever measured. Two hundred weddings, and the pattern — flat until 9:40, then a jump — was so consistent that everyone involved had concluded it was simply how weddings go. A universally observed failure looks like a law of nature.
🎤 From the Field: Venues supply floor plans, and planners use them, and both parties assume the plan encodes accumulated wisdom.
Sometimes it does. Frequently it encodes an electrical panel, a capacity target, or the preference of a banquet manager who left in 2014.
The question to ask a venue, and it is a version of Chapter 10's question 33:
"Where did this floor plan come from, and has anyone tried it a different way?"
The answers are informative. "That's how we've always done it" means nobody has tested it. "We tried the floor in the centre and the caterer couldn't serve the back tables" means somebody has, and you should find out what went wrong.
Post-Mortem
Root cause: the dance floor was placed relative to the band, which was placed relative to an electrical panel. A twenty-amp outlet determined the social architecture of two hundred weddings.
Contributing causes:
- The venue's plan maximized table count, which is the venue's interest and not the client's.
- Nobody had measured the distances, and the mean seat-to-floor distance is not a number anyone thinks to compute.
- The failure was universal, which made it invisible. Everyone at that venue believed the floor filling at 9:40 was normal, because at that venue it was.
- Bar and floor at opposite ends forced guests to choose between drinking and dancing for the evening.
What went right:
- The planner timed it. Four weddings of observation, then a stopwatch. Almost nobody does this and it converted a vague sense into a measurement.
- She proposed it to the venue, not just to her client — which fixed it for every subsequent event and made her a person that venue calls.
- She solved the power constraint rather than accepting it. $180.
- She stated the cost honestly. Two tables. A central floor is not free.
Transferable rules:
- Measure mean seat-to-floor distance. If it exceeds about 25 feet, the floor is in the wrong place.
- Ask where a venue's floor plan came from.
- Never let a power outlet determine a layout without pricing the alternative. Cable is cheap.
- Bar and dance floor at opposite ends forces a choice. Split the bar or move one.
- A central floor costs two tables at capacity. Say so.
- Time things. A universally observed failure looks like a law of nature until somebody holds a stopwatch.

Mini-Project
Time a dance floor.
Attend any event with dancing — a wedding, a party, a function — and record, every ten minutes from the floor opening: the number of people on it, and the number of guests in the room.
Then measure or pace: the distance from the furthest table to the floor, the distance from the nearest, and how many tables have a direct view.
Plot the curve. Compare its shape to this case's two curves — the flat-then-jump and the steady climb.
Then do it again at a different venue with a different layout. Two curves is an observation; one is an anecdote.
If you can get to four, you will have something almost no planner has: evidence about your own market's rooms, which is the kind of thing that makes a venue take your floor plan seriously.
