Case Study 26.2 🔬 Deep Dive: Two Sections That Do Not Exist

The Reyes–Whitfield wedding is a Tier 3 illustrative composite. The book assembled here is reproduced in full in Appendix F. This case is about what assembling it revealed — which is that two of the ten sections had nothing to put in them.
Act One: What Exists Already
Twenty-five chapters have produced the contents of nine of the ten sections without anybody calling them that.

Act Two: The Run Sheet
Three and a half hours, and the conversion is mechanical until it is not.
Every line of Chapter 25's timeline becomes a run sheet line with five fields. Most convert directly. Eleven do not, and those eleven are the value of the exercise.
🚨 The eleven lines that had no owner

Two had never been decided at all: who receives the ice, and who is one of the two people counting a bar inventory at 11 p.m.
And one collision the read-through found
Danny now has four lines: signage at 7:15, cable ramps at 7:25, the rings at 16:53, and cocktail tables at 20:40.
None of them collides, and the read-through confirmed it out loud.
But the ice delivery at 1:00 does. Chapter 15's plan had Ridgeline arriving at 2:00 to set up the bar. The first ice delivery is at 1:00, it needs a four-hour chill, and 220 lb of ice does not receive itself.
Ridgeline's arrival moves to 1:00. Which is a call, and it is a change to their pack, and it is $0 — and it had been sitting in the plan since Chapter 15 without anybody putting the two times next to each other.
Act Three: Contacts, and the Second Number Problem
Assembled from six chapters, and the assembly is the point.

🚨 Four single points of failure, found by building a table
Trey Bankole is the worst of them. He holds four starred cues — the string lights at 7:20, the floor opening at 8:47, the MC's eleven announcements, and the music-off at 10:30 — and Bankole Sound is one person with one mobile.
At Wildrye there is intermittent signal in the parking field and none in the meadow.
The email, sent the same day, to all four:
"One thing for my contact sheet — do you have a second number? An office, a partner, anyone who could reach you if your mobile doesn't. The site has patchy signal and I'd rather have it and not need it."
Three replied within a day. Trey's second number is his partner's. The videographer's is still outstanding at −6 days and it goes on the exceptions page as a known gap.
Act Four: The Two Sections That Do Not Exist
Section 8 — the strike sheet is partial
Chapter 13 produced a strike plan: named owners, linen bagging, client property, a final walkthrough.
What it does not contain is everything the last eleven chapters added.

This is Chapter 30's chapter and it is being surfaced here because the strike sheet is a production book section and a section with four blanks in it is a section that has been noticed.
Assigned, provisionally, and confirmed with Chapter 30: the empties and green waste go to Danny and two cousins, Sunday 8:00, in two cars, to the rental house and thence to the tip · unopened alcohol and the bouquet to Elena, Saturday 11 p.m. · Bernarda's cake stand to Bernarda, who will ask for it anyway.
Section 10 — the emergency page does not exist
Twenty-five chapters and there is no emergency page.
Not because anybody decided against one. Because no chapter owned it, and it is nobody's obvious job — Chapter 9 did insurance and permits, Chapter 29 will do accessibility, and the one page that matters at the moment somebody is unwell has fallen between them.

Twenty minutes to write. Printed twice — one in the book, one folded in the planner's pocket. And Beatriz is told it exists and where.
🚪 Threshold Concept: the page that no chapter owns
Every section of a production book is the output of some earlier process except this one.
The run sheet comes from a timeline. The cue sheet comes from lighting and music. The photo plan comes from a photographer. The emergency page comes from nowhere, which is precisely why it does not exist at most weddings.
And it is the only section whose absence is invisible until the moment it is needed — at which point a planner is looking for a hospital's address on a laptop in a car park while somebody is ill.
The general form: anything that is nobody's obvious output has to be somebody's explicit job. It is twenty minutes and it is the cheapest twenty minutes in the book.

Ten times and four numbers. It is what gets looked at.
Act Six: The Generation Test
Change dinner service by twelve minutes. How long to eleven correct documents?

The source is one table. Each line carries: time · what · who · cue · exception · and a tag for every party it belongs to.

And the check that matters: does the bar's pack change? §26.7's second-order dependency — the toast pour moves with the toasts, which move with dinner.
Tagged correctly, it does. Which means the tagging was the work, and it was done once.

Discussion Questions
1. Nine of the eleven ownerless lines had been decided in an earlier chapter and never written where anybody would look. What does that say about where decisions go to be lost?
2. The ice delivery collision had been in the plan since Chapter 15. Find another two-times-never-put-next-to-each-other in this book.
3. The emergency page belonged to no chapter. Name three other things that are nobody's obvious output, and say who should own each.
4. Four vendors had one number each and the fix was one email. Why had nobody sent it in twenty-five chapters?
5. The strike sheet had four unassigned items and three of them were somebody's property. Is that a Chapter 26 problem or a Chapter 30 problem? Does the answer matter?
6. The generation test came in at fourteen minutes because the tagging was done once. Estimate how long the tagging took, and say whether it was worth it for one wedding.
7. The pocket card has ten times on it. Choose a different ten and defend the substitutions.
Mini-Project
Assemble a production book and find what does not exist.
Take a timeline — Chapter 25's, or one of your own — and:
- Convert it to a run sheet, five fields, and list every line that has no owner. Count them.
- Assemble the contact sheet from scratch, by arrival time, and mark every vendor with one number.
- Send the second-number email.
- Inventory the ten sections and mark each: exists · partial · does not exist.
- Build the missing ones. The emergency page first.
- Do the read-through, out loud. Record what it finds.
- Run the generation test and report the time.
- Print it, hold it, and take it outside at dusk.
Deliverable: one book, one inventory with statuses, one read-through log. Step 4 is the chapter.
