π¬ Case Study 35.2: Wildrye Farm β The Decision Nobody Made for This Reason

The footprint, computed eleven months late
It took forty minutes and should have taken forty minutes in month two.

Guest travel: 7,977 kg. Ninety-four per cent.
And the whole of the rest of the wedding β the food, the flowers, the generator, every vendor's van, the stationery, the waste β is 522 kg, which is less than one guest flying from the other side of the country.
The thing that actually worked
πͺ The single most effective environmental decision on this wedding was made in Chapter 5, for a completely different reason.
The guest list was capped.
Alicia and Sam invited 115 and expected 100, against a family that could easily have produced 180. The decision was made in month one, on a $42,000 budget, for money.
Chapter 5 called the guest count the master variable and meant it about cost.
It is also the master variable here. Eighty additional guests, at this wedding's mix of travel, would have added roughly 6,400 kg β nearly doubling the footprint β and the flights of a handful of them would have done most of it.
Nobody has ever described a guest-list cap as an environmental measure, and on this wedding it was worth more than every other decision combined by a factor of about twelve.
And the second-best thing was also not environmental.
The venue is ninety minutes from the city where most guests live β which was chosen because it was affordable and because Alicia's family knew it. A venue three hours out would have added roughly 1,400 kg to the driving alone, and would have pushed more guests into overnight accommodation.

What was never raised
π¨ The travel conversation did not happen.
At venue selection, in month one, nobody said anything about where the guests were.
It would not have changed the venue β Wildrye was already the close option, and it was chosen for money β but the couple would have known.
And there is a version of this wedding where they chose a beautiful place three hours away and nobody ever told them that was the largest environmental decision they would make, which is the failure Β§35.3 is written against.
π¨ And the eleven flying guests were never discussed.
Nor should they have been, in the sense of asking anybody not to come β that is a family decision and a planner has no business in it.
What could have happened, at no social cost: the eleven were told about each other. Four of them, it turned out afterwards, were on the same route within two days and would happily have travelled together, which would have changed nothing about emissions and a great deal about their weekend.
The honest note: this is not a carbon measure. It is a guest-experience measure that the footprint analysis surfaced, and it belongs in Chapter 29's list.
The diversion plan
Built at β4 weeks. It cost $0 and about ninety minutes of somebody's time.

Marguerite Osei's first answer was "we're not usually allowed to."
Her second answer, after she checked, was that she had donated surplus twice before and had simply never been asked by a planner.
What was established, in writing, at β4 weeks: the community kitchen's receiving window and what they would and would not take Β· Sundown's agreement, added to the catering contract as a line Β· a temperature and time protocol β hot food held above temperature, out of the danger zone, delivered within two hours Β· containers, provided by the kitchen Β· and TomΓ‘s Reyes named as the driver.
π And the caution this book owes: food-safety requirements are real, they are not waived by any donation protection, and what applies varies by jurisdiction. Establish it in writing, with the caterer, before promising anybody anything.

That 89.6% represents roughly 11 kg COβe of avoided emissions, against a wedding footprint of 8,499.
It is 0.13% of the carbon and it is worth doing, because nineteen kilograms of food fed people, thirty-four kilograms of foliage did not go into a hole, and none of that is measured in carbon. Β§35.4a.
What Alicia and Sam were told

Eighty-one words. It reports rather than instructs, names the recipients, attaches the environmental measure to a convenience, and thanks people for travelling rather than implying they should not have.
π And the honest report to the couple, at the Chapter 30 debrief
"One more thing, and it's a finding about me rather than about the wedding.
I worked out the environmental footprint afterwards. About eight and a half tonnes, and ninety-four per cent of it is people getting here.
The single biggest thing either of you did was cap the guest list at a hundred and fifteen β which you did in month one, for money, and which was worth more than every other choice combined.
The flowers, the compost, the food donation β all of that is about a tenth of one per cent. It's worth doing and it isn't what mattered.
And the thing I got wrong: I never told you, when we were choosing venues, that where the venue is relative to your guests is the biggest environmental decision you'd make. It wouldn't have changed anything β Wildrye was the close one. But you should have known."

DQ1. The guest-list cap was worth twelve times everything else and was made for money. What follows?
Consider
**Two things, and the second is uncomfortable.** **First, the practical one: the largest environmental decisions on most events are made in the first two months, by the client, about scale and location, for reasons that have nothing to do with the environment.** **Which means a planner's leverage is almost entirely in month one and almost nil afterwards** β and it is exercised by putting a number in front of somebody, once. **Second: it means most of what a planner does under the heading of sustainability is downstream of decisions already made.** **You can run an exemplary diversion plan on a wedding whose footprint was determined before you were engaged.** **And the resolution is not despair, it is sequencing.** **Β§35.1's instruction β compute the split first β exists so that the effort goes where the decision still is.** **At month one that is venue and scale; at month nine it is the menu; at month eleven it is genuinely only the diversion plan, and knowing that is what stops you overstating it.**DQ2. The counterfactual is identical.** **On practice: absolutely.** **The conversation is not an intervention, it is information** β and the version of this wedding where the couple chose the far venue and were never told is the same planner making the same omission with a much worse result. **You cannot only have the conversation when it will change the answer, because you do not know in advance which those are.** **And there is a third reading, which is the best one.** **Alicia and Sam capped their guest list and chose a close venue and never knew they had done the two most consequential environmental things available to them.** **Telling them afterwards is worth something** β they will plan other things in their lives β **and telling them in month one would have been worth more.**DQ3. Consider
**A reflex, not a belief β and it is the single most common sentence in this area.** **Three things produce it.** **It is the safe answer**: nobody was ever criticised for declining to donate food. **It is genuinely complicated**, so a short refusal is cheaper than an accurate explanation. **And it is true of some food** β hot food held too long, anything already served, anything outside temperature control β **so the refusal is partly correct and gets generalised.** **What unlocked it was the specific ask.** Not *"can we donate the leftovers?"* but **an identified recipient, a receiving window, a named driver, and a request to add a line to the contract.** **Which is Β§32.7's finding, and Ch.24's, and Ch.29's, arriving for the fifth time in this book: a specific, bounded, individual ask is answerable and a general one is not.** **And the honest caution the case study keeps: she was right that it is regulated, and the protocol is the reason it worked.**DQ4. The report says the diversion plan is "about a tenth of one per cent." Does saying that undermine the plan?
Consider
**It undermines a claim the plan should never have been making, and it protects the plan itself.** **Case Study 35.1 is the demonstration.** The Verdance conference attached a superlative to a 4.2% programme, **and when the number came out the good work was discredited along with the claim.** **By reporting 0.13% out loud, this wedding's diversion plan is inoculated.** **Nobody can later "discover" that it was small, because it was announced as small** β and the reasons it is worth doing were stated on their own terms: **nineteen kilograms of food fed people, and thirty-four kilograms of foliage did not go into a hole.** **Which is Β§35.4a's argument doing real work.** **The carbon number is the right tool for deciding where effort goes and the wrong tool for deciding what has value** β and a report that uses each for its own job can be honest about both.DQ5.
