This chapter has the strongest evidence base in Part IV. Lighting and audio are engineering disciplines with standards bodies, published measurement methods, and a century of practice behind them. Where this chapter is soft is in the event-specific application — fixture spacings, the cue conventions, and the claim about what a guest notices — and those are marked as practice below.


Tier 1 — Verifiable published sources

Lighting fundamentals and measurement

  • Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), The Lighting Handbook. The standards reference. Expensive; in most university and many public libraries. The chapters on hospitality and on outdoor lighting are the two that transfer.
  • CIE (International Commission on Illumination) publications on colour rendering and colour appearance. CIE 13.3 defines CRI; IES TM-30-20 is the newer and better method that supplements it. Read TM-30 if you want to understand why CRI alone is an inadequate metric and what R9 (deep red — i.e. skin) actually tells you.
  • Descottes, Hervé and Cecilia E. Ramos. Architectural Lighting: Designing with Light and Space. The most readable serious book on what light does to a room and to the people in it.
  • Brandi, Ulrike. Lighting Design: Principles, Implementation, Case Studies. Shorter, more practical.
  • Gillette, J. Michael. Designing with Light: An Introduction to Stage Lighting. Theatre, and the closest professional analogue to event lighting — temporary, cued, rigged, struck. The chapters on plots, focus, and cue construction transfer almost directly.
  • Moody, James L. and Paul Dexter. Concert Lighting: Studio to Stage. For anything involving trussing, moving fixtures, or a band.

Electrical

  • NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) in the US, and Article 525, which covers carnivals, circuses, fairs, and similar events — the article that actually governs temporary event power. In the UK: BS 7671 and BS 7909 (temporary electrical systems for entertainment). In Australia: AS/NZS 3002.
  • ESTA / PLASA technical standards for entertainment power and rigging. ANSI E1.6 series on hoists and rigging; E1.19 on RCD/GFCI protection.
  • Your generator supplier's own load-sizing guidance, which is usually free, usually conservative, and usually correct.

Sound

  • Davis, Gary and Ralph Jones. Sound Reinforcement Handbook (Yamaha). The standard practical reference and still the best single book on the subject. The chapters on microphones, gain structure, and feedback are the three a planner benefits from.
  • Everest, F. Alton and Ken Pohlmann. Master Handbook of Acoustics. For understanding why a barn and a tent behave completely differently.
  • AES (Audio Engineering Society) papers on speech intelligibility. Search terms: STI (Speech Transmission Index), %ALcons. This is the measurable version of "can they hear the vows," and it is a real field.
  • The inverse-square law and outdoor sound propagation — any acoustics text. The ~6 dB per doubling figure in §18.6 is this, and it is physics rather than practice.

Noise regulation

Photography and light

  • Any current text on portrait lighting, for one purpose: understanding why the photographer will ask about the first dance, and what one fixture in the right place is worth to them.

Tier 2 — Attributed professional practice

  • The five jobs of light. A teaching framework, not a standard. Theatre uses key/fill/back/practical; architecture uses ambient/task/accent. This chapter's version is adapted for events, where "practical" means safety lighting and "effect" means the DJ.
  • Fixture spacings in §18.3a — 6–8 ft uplighter centres, string at 8–10 ft AFF, 5–7 runs across a 40 ft span. Working figures from practice. They vary with ceiling height, fixture beam angle, and how dense you want it. Ask two rental companies and you will get two answers.
  • The "pull the uplighter 12–18 inches out and angle it" rule. Sound in principle — a raking angle across a surface reveals texture and covers more area than a perpendicular beam. The specific distances are practice.
  • The word-to-fixture translation table (§18.3a). Entirely constructed for this book, from how these words get used by clients. It is a starting point for a conversation, not a lookup table.
  • The claim that "we couldn't hear the vows" is the most common serious production failure at weddings. This is the author's observation and it is not measured anywhere. It is, however, consistent with what every DJ, videographer, and officiant will tell you if asked, and exercise C.4 lets you test the mechanism yourself.
  • The four-minute rehearsal test. Practice, and the strongest single recommendation in the chapter.
  • The $150–$300 ceremony sound figure and the $280–$510 filament-lighting premium. Plausible for a mid-market North American market in the mid-2020s.
  • The 22:25 "gentle signal" cue. A real technique, widely used, never written down.

Tier 3 — Illustrative and constructed

All case-study material. Ines and Jack, Tomasz, Vinyl & Vine, the clifftop; Trey Bankole, Bankole Sound, the Reyes–Whitfield plot and cue sheet. Constructed.

All prices. They will be wrong for your market and wrong next year; the structures transfer.

The dB(A) figures in §18.6 are indicative ranges, not measurements, and the boundary arithmetic assumes free-field propagation with no screening — which is a simplification that will overstate the level at almost any real site with a building, a hedge, or a slope between the source and the boundary.


Where to go next

Photograph one room at four times of day (Chapter 16, exercise C.2) and then photograph one room with everything on and then with only the warm low sources (this chapter, exercise C.2). Twenty minutes, two rooms, and you will never specify 4,000 K again.

Get a lux meter app and a dB meter app. Both are free, both are approximately accurate, and both convert an argument into a number. Measure the rooms you like.

Read one theatre lighting text, not for the aesthetics but for the method — the plot, the focus session, the cue sheet, and the discipline of writing down what happens at what minute. Events borrowed all of it and mostly forgot the cue sheet.

Take a $220 ceremony package apart. Ask any DJ what is in theirs. It is one question and it is Case Study 18.1's entire prevention.

And find out what your own market's noise rules are (exercise E.2), for one real venue, in writing, once. You will use it forever.


Chapter 19 preview

Stationery, signage, and guest communication — the last chapter of Part IV, and the one with the smallest budget in the book.

$150**, after Chapter 16's audit found $700 taken from a $400 line. It is also the chapter where Part IV's design finally reaches a guest before** the wedding rather than during it.

Bring the through-line, the repeated element, and this chapter's recurring finding: the highest-value intervention is frequently free, and it is almost always a decision about timing or about what somebody is told.
