Case Study 2 — Two Tubs: Creatine and the Pre-Workout Next to It
A market and evidence case. The products are composites of real categories; the pricing, the label mechanics and the evidence positions are not.
Setup
On the same shelf, roughly a foot apart, in every supplement shop I have been into.
Tub A: creatine monohydrate. Plain white plastic. One ingredient. 500 g. Tub B: a pre-workout. Holographic label, aggressive name, 30 servings.

That's the case study. Everything below is the anatomy.
Tub A: what a supported supplement looks like
The label, in full:
Supplement Facts. Serving size 5 g. Servings per container 100. Creatine monohydrate 5 g. Other ingredients: none.
That's it. One ingredient, one dose, one line.
And the evidence behind it: hundreds of randomized trials over three decades; meta-analyses; an ISSN position stand describing it as the most effective ergogenic nutritional supplement available for increasing high-intensity exercise capacity and lean mass; long-term safety data in healthy people; and a mechanism (§16.3) specific enough to predict where it won't work — which is the mark of a real one.
Notice what the product does not do. It doesn't claim to boost testosterone, support immune function, enhance focus, or accelerate recovery. It makes no structure/function claims at all, because it doesn't need any — the compound has a name, a dose, and a literature.
💡 Aha moment. The absence of marketing language is the quality signal.
§16.1 established that "supports," "promotes" and "helps maintain" are the strongest claims a product can make without evidence. So a label crowded with them is telling you something.
A label with none of them — just a compound and a number — is a product that doesn't need the vocabulary. It's an unusual signal because it works backwards from how we normally read packaging: the plainer the tub, the better the evidence.
Tub B: what nineteen ingredients buys
The label, condensed:

Three proprietary blends. Nineteen ingredients. Not one individual dose disclosed.
What's wrong, item by item
1. You cannot assess a single ingredient. §16.4. The "Strength & Endurance Blend" is 3,100 mg across eight ingredients. Beta-alanine's studied dose is on the order of several grams a day — more than the entire blend. So either beta-alanine is essentially the whole blend and the other seven are traces, or beta-alanine is under-dosed. You cannot tell, by design.
2. Creatine HCl instead of monohydrate. A premium form, in an undisclosed dose, inside a blend. Creatine monohydrate is the form with hundreds of trials behind it; alternative forms cost more and have not outperformed it. And whatever the dose is, it is a fraction of 3,100 mg shared eight ways — almost certainly far below the 3–5 g that works.
3. Some ingredients have decent evidence, at doses this can't be delivering. Caffeine ✅ (§16.3), citrulline and nitrate have reasonable ergogenic literatures (Chapter 23), beta-alanine has a real though modest one. Their presence is genuine and their doses are unknowable — which is precisely what "fairy dusting" describes.
4. Some have essentially none. Tribulus and D-aspartic acid are marketed for testosterone; the trials are largely null. Their function on this label is to be listed.
5. ⚠️ And two safety notes. The caffeine dose is inside a blend, so a user cannot know their intake — which matters for anyone stacking it with coffee, and for anyone with anxiety, arrhythmia or hypertension. Ashwagandha appears in the NIH LiverTox database with reports of hepatotoxicity, and in a proprietary blend the dose is, again, unknown.
The comparison that matters
The honest version of Tub B is Tub A plus a coffee.

Four times the price for a product you cannot evaluate, containing undisclosed doses of the same two compounds plus seventeen others.
And you'd know your caffeine dose, which you cannot with Tub B.
Why Tub B outsells Tub A
Because it is better designed as a product, and it is worth being honest about this rather than sneering.

The tingling deserves particular attention. Beta-alanine causes paraesthesia — a harmless skin tingling — and it functions as a perceptible confirmation that the product is doing something. Creatine produces no sensation at all, ever, and its effects appear over weeks as slightly better training sessions.
This is Walt's "the bottles feel like I'm doing something" (Chapter 11, Case Study 1), engineered into a formulation.
💡 The general principle, and it now holds across five chapters. Chapter 5's metabolism aisle, Chapter 8's protein bars, Chapter 11's fiber gummies, Chapter 15's electrolyte sachets, and now this:
The product with the strongest evidence is consistently the cheapest, plainest, and least marketable thing on the shelf — and it consistently produces no immediate sensation.
Marketing spend follows margin; margin follows differentiation; differentiation requires either a proprietary formulation or a perceptible effect. A single-ingredient compound with a hundred-trial literature and no sensation offers none of those, which is why it sits in a plain tub next to something seven times the price.
Analysis
1. The plainest label had the best evidence. One ingredient, one dose, no structure/function claims — because a compound with a real literature doesn't need the vocabulary.
2. Proprietary blends make evaluation impossible by design, and the beta-alanine arithmetic demonstrates it concretely: the studied dose exceeds the entire blend.
3. Some of Tub B's ingredients genuinely work. Caffeine and citrulline aren't nonsense. Their presence at unknown doses is the problem — which is a more precise criticism than "it's all rubbish" and a harder one to dismiss.
4. ⚠️ The undisclosed caffeine is a real safety issue, not just an evidential one. A user stacking this with coffee has no way to know their total intake.
5. The sensation is the product. Beta-alanine tingling is harmless, meaningless, and probably the single most commercially valuable ingredient in the tub.
6. And Tub A costs $80 a year. For the supplement with the strongest evidence in this entire book.

Go to a supplement retailer — physical or online — and find the two tubs.
Pick the plainest single-ingredient product you can find, and the most elaborately marketed multi-ingredient one in the same category.

Then answer two questions:
- Which has better evidence, and which costs more? (In five chapters of doing this, I have not yet found a category where these point the same way.)
- Does the elaborate product produce an immediate sensation? If so, name the ingredient responsible. It is usually beta-alanine, caffeine, or niacin (which causes flushing and appears in some formulations at doses well above requirement for precisely that reason).
And if you take a pre-workout: work out your caffeine dose. If it's inside a proprietary blend, you can't — which is the finding.
