1. b) Whether they are industrial formulations. ⚠️ Not nutrients, not "naturalness." This is why NOVA irritates nutrition scientists — it cuts across every category they use. §22.1.
2. b) A homemade cake. ⚠️ Flour, butter, sugar and eggs are Groups 1 and 2. NOVA is explicitly not making a claim about its nutritional quality — which is the clearest demonstration that it isn't a purity ladder. §22.1, §22.2.
3. b) What industrial formulation does to how much you eat. ⚠️ It is a claim about intake, not about toxicity — and it changes the question you ask about a food from "what's in it?" to "what does this do to how much I eat, and why was it built that way?" §22.2.
4. d) All three. Group 3 contains excellent food; ⚠️ processing per se — pasteurization, canning, refrigeration, fortification — is among the most successful public health work ever done; and Group 2 is not Group 4. §22.2.
5. b) Presented calories, energy density, macronutrients, sugar, sodium and fiber. ⚠️ The matching is what makes the result interesting — every usual explanation was controlled for. §22.3.
6. b) ~500 kcal/day more, ~0.9 kg gained. And ~0.9 kg lost on the unprocessed arm. ⚠️ Nobody was told to eat more or less. Nothing was restricted. §22.3.
7. b) They ate faster. ⚠️ More calories per minute — which points directly at §22.5's second and third mechanisms, and is visible in the menus: you can eat canned ravioli, soft white bread and a packaged snack in six minutes; the salad with chicken, apple slices and seeds is physically hard to eat in under fifteen. §22.3.
8. c) It was not randomized. ⚠️ It WAS randomized — that's the point. The real limitations: n=20, two weeks per arm, unblinded (and unblindable), fiber matched via supplemented beverages, and an inpatient setting. §22.4.
9. b) Energy density, eating rate and texture. ⚠️ All three are boring, physical, and have nothing to do with chemicals. You could make an ultra-processed food that was hard, dry and slow to eat and the effect would probably shrink — nobody does, because those are commercially bad properties. §22.5.
10. b) Inconsistent classification between coders. ⚠️ A framework whose central variable can't be measured consistently has a real problem, and the chapter says plainly that this is the objection it finds hardest to answer — and holds NOVA's reliability at low confidence. §22.7, §22.14.
11. b) The ward trial matched those variables and still found the difference. ⚠️ This is the direct answer to the "junk food with a research grant" objection. If Group 4 were only a proxy for those nutrients, matching them should have abolished the effect. It didn't. §22.8.
12. b) Each faction identified a real component and built a theory around it. ⚠️ Sugar, seed oils, pesticides and additives, and meal timing are all removed by the same intervention. Five incompatible theories produced real results because they were all interventions on the same variable and none of them knew it — which is why the debates never resolved. §22.9.
13. b) A systemic problem converted into a shopping decision. ⚠️ A villain you can eliminate by purchase is individually actionable; a food environment isn't. Which explains the premium product attached to every Part IV chapter — cane-sugar soda, beef tallow, organic produce, a fasting kit — ⚠️ and applies to this chapter too, since "UPF-free" is already appearing on packaging. §22.9.
14. b) They get reformulated around. ⚠️ "Reduce fat" → fat-free products with added sugar. "Reduce saturated fat" → partial hydrogenation → trans fats. "Add fiber" → isolated fiber in otherwise unchanged products. Not a conspiracy — it's what a system does when asked to hit a measurable metric. §22.10b.
15. a) Harder to game and harder to use. ⚠️ The only way to leave Group 4 is to stop being an industrial formulation — which is a genuine advantage. But "make this less ultra-processed" has no first step, where "take 20% of the sugar out" does. §22.10b, §22.7.
16. b) Time, skill, equipment, storage, energy, access and waste tolerance. ⚠️ All unequally distributed. Any version of this chapter that ends at "cook from scratch" has described a solution available to people who already have one. §22.11.
17. d) Group 3 foods are a practical backbone. ⚠️ That's a recommendation, not a warning — tinned beans, frozen vegetables, tinned fish, plain yoghurt, oats. The four genuine warnings: it's not a moral category · not everything in a packet is poison · nobody needs zero · and the framing carries a documented disordered-eating risk. §22.12, §22.13.
18. b) Preliminary microbiota and metabolite changes in small short studies. ⚠️ "Emulsifiers alter the human gut microbiome" now has preliminary evidence; "emulsifiers cause disease at dietary exposures" is untested. And §22.5's top three mechanisms explain the ward trial more parsimoniously — more interesting and less established is the combination that reliably produces over-claiming. §22.10.
19. b) Start with drinks. ⚠️ Chapter 18 §18.7 is ✅, soft drinks are Group 4 by definition, and it requires cooking nothing. Highest yield, lowest effort, and it works for households where §22.11's constraints bite. §22.13.
20. b) Ultra-processed diets cause greater ad libitum intake at matched nutrients. ⚠️ Randomized, crossover, inpatient, gram-measured, nutrient-matched — close to the ceiling of what's achievable for a dietary question (§22.4). Note carefully what it does NOT establish: that UPF harms independently of energy intake, which remains 🟡 and is the biggest open question here. §22.3, §22.14.

Question 3. ⚠️ If the threshold didn't land, you will read this chapter as "packets are bad" — and §22.12 exists specifically to prevent that.
Question 13. ⚠️ The most portable idea in Part IV, and it applies well beyond food.
Question 20. ⚠️ Note the second half of the answer. The strongest verdict in this book is about intake, not about disease — and keeping those separate is what distinguishes this chapter from the movement it describes.
