Chapter 38 โ€” Self-Check Quiz

  • d) None

Answers

1. b) He read it, agreed, and did nothing for eighteen months. โš ๏ธ The most uncomfortable fact in the book, and it is aimed at the book: if knowing did not produce doing in the reader paying most attention, about the claim the book is most confident of, what was the reading for? ยง38.0.

2. b) A concession. โš ๏ธ Every protection โ€” no calorie targets, no goal weights, no body-composition targets, ranges instead of prescriptions โ€” reduces the risk and none removes it. โš ๏ธ The honest claim is not "this book is safe" but that for most readers it reduces rule-following and for a minority it can supply another rule set, and that minority has been told so four times in print. ยง38.1.

3. b) The confidence column. โš ๏ธ It is the right way to present evidence and a bad way to present it to someone already scoring themselves โ€” and ยง38.1 says plainly that no version doing both jobs exists. โš ๏ธ A genuine unresolved tension, not a rhetorical concession. ยง38.1.

4. b) Filter versus list. โš ๏ธ A list competes with every other list the reader will meet and decays when the campaign ends; a filter operates ON the other lists and the six questions do not expire. โš ๏ธ Theo's eighteen months is the filter working: one addition, thirty avoided changes. ยง38.2.

5. b) Three. โš ๏ธ It is convenient โ€” "my kind of education is the good kind" is exactly what a person who wrote a long book would say. It is thinly evidenced, held at ๐ŸŸก not ๐ŸŸข. And a six-hundred-page book reaches people with time, literacy and existing interest, which is Chapter 36 Case Study 1's distributional failure unchanged. ยง38.2.

6. b) Shape, calibration, filter, recovery. โš ๏ธ None of them is a food. โš ๏ธ And what it was NOT for: certainty, a plan, an optimum, and weight loss. ยง38.3.

7. b) โœ…, at roughly 132. โš ๏ธ A book positioning itself as sceptical, ending with "well supported" as its commonest verdict, should be asked why โ€” and ยง38.5 asks rather than celebrating. ยง38.5.

8. b) Many are not dietary findings. โš ๏ธ Refeeding syndrome is real, ingredients are listed by descending weight, use-by is a safety date, ghrelin rises before expected meals. โš ๏ธ Chapter 30 alone contributed eight โœ…s about labelling law. The scepticism was never about whether facts exist. ยง38.5, and Chapter 29 ยง29.16 asked it first.

9. b) โŒ and ๐ŸŸ , about 133 claims. โš ๏ธ Detoxes, superfoods, most supplements, IgG panels, hair analysis, blood-type diets, nutrigenomic tests. โš ๏ธ A book whose largest practical effect is the things you stop doing is an odd deliverable โ€” and it is Theo's eighteen months again. ยง38.5.

10. b) 2, 10, 18 and 33. โš ๏ธ Is the evidence any good ยท is this the right argument ยท what is the dose ยท and is this even a food problem. โš ๏ธ A person carrying those four questions is better equipped than one carrying the whole plate and none of them. ยง38.5b.

11. b) Section 1. โš ๏ธ Marisol's, Devi's, Walt's and Kelsey's first sections have almost nothing in common โ€” and their fifth sections are all doing the same job. โš ๏ธ What generalizes is not the food. ยง38.6b.

12. b) Pointed in the opposite direction. โš ๏ธ "Does this generate a rule? If yes, it is not for me." โš ๏ธ Which is the point of including her: the filter can be aimed where the person actually needs it, and for her that means away from composition entirely. ยง38.6b, Ch 34.

13. b) New, mechanistic, real citations, confident, REPLACING. โš ๏ธ And something will be for sale, though possibly only attention. โš ๏ธ Chapter 37 ยง37.2b established that claims which replace rather than adjust are almost always wrong. ยง38.7.

14. b) Tested or proposed; new or back; has anything converged. โš ๏ธ The gap between "plausible mechanism" and "tested prediction" is where the seed oil argument broke (Ch 19 ยง19.5), and a new claim supported by one line of evidence is one line. ยง38.7.

15. b) "I don't know yet." โš ๏ธ Nutrition is a field in which waiting to see whether something replicates is almost always right and is the position that earns the least social credit. ยง38.7.

16. b) All four. โš ๏ธ "Notice if you are pleased" belongs there because being right about experts being wrong is a satisfying feeling with nothing to do with evidence โ€” and it is what a great deal of contrarian nutrition content is selling. ยง38.8.

17. b) What you conclude about it. โš ๏ธ Chapter 33 ยง33.6's step 5: a person who reads a lapse as predictable changes nothing structural; a person who reads it as "I have no discipline" tightens the rules, and the tightening produces the next collapse. ยง38.9.

18. b) One thing, the easiest, adding nothing, not on a Monday. โš ๏ธ Monday, January and "getting serious" are all the all-or-nothing pattern in disguise. โš ๏ธ Kwabena's week four is the model: "Before, that would have been the end of it. This time it was just a bad week." ยง38.9, Ch 31 CS1.

19. b) It is for claims that would change what YOU eat. โš ๏ธ A person who has just learned to evaluate evidence is at their most insufferable, and Chapter 34 ยง34.11's language section applies to you too. โš ๏ธ The one exception: if someone asks how to evaluate a claim, teach the filter rather than giving your answer โ€” that is the only form that scales. ยง38.7, ยง38.9b.

20. b) Two, and one of those was negative knowledge. โš ๏ธ Five of seven were helped most by a coach, a form, a lunch club, treatment, or a dietitian. โš ๏ธ That ratio is the honest summary of what a nutrition book does, and ยง38.2 is an attempt to say something true about the remaining two rather than to claim the other five. Case Study 2.

Scoring

Score Reading
18โ€“20 Strong. Do A1 โ€” write the two-page framework. It is the only exercise in this book that produces something you keep.
15โ€“17 Solid. Reread ยง38.2 and ยง38.5.
11โ€“14 Reread ยง38.1 and ยง38.2 โ€” the two debts are what this chapter exists to settle.
โ‰ค10 โš ๏ธ Reread the hook and ยง38.3. The direct answer to "what was this for" is four sentences long.

Three items worth checking regardless of score.

Question 2. โš ๏ธ The answer to the book's own caveat is a concession first. If that reads as evasion, say so โ€” Tier 3's S1 asks you to judge it.

Question 7. โš ๏ธ A sceptical book whose commonest verdict is "well supported" owes an explanation. ยง38.5 gives one; check whether it convinces you.

Question 20. โš ๏ธ Two of seven. That is the honest measure of what this has been worth.

โš ๏ธ That is the last quiz.

โš ๏ธ Eat mostly plants. Eat enough protein. Cook a reasonable amount of it. Sleep. Move. Eat with people.

โš ๏ธ Then close the book and go and have dinner.
