Case Study 1 — Eleven Months: Theo's Window, in Full
Theo Vasquez is an illustrative composite carried through this book. The trajectory, the compensation curve and the diary structure are drawn from a pattern I have seen repeatedly; the person is constructed.
Setup
He started on a Monday, because everyone starts on a Monday.
The rule: nothing but water and black coffee until noon. Nothing after 8pm.
He picked it because a colleague had done it, because it required no counting, and — he said this plainly — because "it's one decision instead of forty."
⚠️ That reason is the best one in this chapter and it's the one §21.10 endorses.
What follows is eleven months of a food diary, and the point of the case study is that his compliance never wavered.
Months 1–3: it works

Down 800 kcal a day. He lost 4.2 kg.
And notice where it came from: ⚠️ 550 kcal of it was eating that had never been a decision. The pastry was a habit attached to the walk from the station. The mid-morning snacking was attached to a specific meeting.
Neither had ever been evaluated. The window abolished both without him having to think about either.
What he said at week six:
"I'm not even hungry until eleven. It's like my body was waiting for permission."
⚠️ §21.3's ghrelin entrainment, described from the inside. His hunger peaks had moved — which takes days to a couple of weeks and feels like a transformation.
And the evening beer went from 580 to 320 kcal, which had nothing to do with fasting. ⚠️ He'd started closing the kitchen at 8pm, so the 9:30pm second beer stopped happening. A different mechanism, credited to the same rule.
Months 4–7: the plateau
Weight stopped moving. He kept the window exactly.
The diary shows what happened, and it happened gradually:

Nothing was reintroduced. Everything grew.
⚠️ The lunch that had been a sandwich became a sandwich and a side. Dinner portions rose. And a new item appeared in the diary that hadn't existed before.
The 7:45 rush
He named it himself.
"There's this thing where it's quarter to eight and I think — right, that's it, so I might as well have something now."
It's in the diary as a distinct entry, twenty-two times in months 4–7: crisps, a second helping, peanut butter from the jar, the rest of the children's leftovers. ⚠️ Median around 280 kcal, consumed standing up, in under ten minutes, almost never hungry.
💡 Aha moment. ⚠️ The window created the behaviour.
A deadline generates pre-deadline consumption. This is not a failure of discipline — it is what deadlines do, and it is entirely absent from every description of the protocol.
And it has a distinctive signature: hurried, standing, unplanned, and not driven by hunger. ⚠️ Which makes it detectable — and therefore fixable — if anybody tells you to look for it.

Above baseline. He regained 1.8 kg.
⚠️ Still perfectly compliant. Still 16:8. Every single day.
What he concluded:
"I think my metabolism adapted. Or I just don't have the discipline."
⚠️ Both wrong, and both are the explanations available to someone who was given a protocol without its expected trajectory.
Chapter 5 rules out the first — adaptive thermogenesis is real and is nowhere near large enough to account for 900 kcal. Chapter 4 §4.7 explains the second: an unmeasured restriction is compensated for, and the compensation is gradual, unconscious and complete.
He didn't fail. He got good at it.
What we changed
⚠️ Not the window. He liked it and it suited his day.
Three things:
1. ⚠️ Named the 7:45 rush and gave it a rule. If the last thing before 8pm is standing up, it doesn't happen. Not a ban — a category. Twenty-two occurrences in four months went to four in the next four.
2. Set a protein floor inside the window. His protein had drifted to about 95 g — down from before, because two eating opportunities had disappeared and nothing replaced their protein. ⚠️ §21.8's problem, self-inflicted and invisible. Target set at 140 g (Chapter 8's checkpoint).
3. ⚠️ Widened the window to 14:10. 10am to 8pm. Which sounds backwards and was the most useful change, because it restored a real breakfast and cut the compensatory lunch substantially.
Four months later: 2,650 kcal, down 2.9 kg, protein 135 g, four rushes.
⚠️ A wider window and less food.
What this case demonstrates
1. ⚠️ The initial effect was real and was entirely intake. 800 kcal, of which 550 was eating that had never been a decision.
2. Compensation was gradual, complete, and invisible from inside. ⚠️ Nothing was reintroduced. Portions grew. He could not have told you it was happening and the diary could.
3. The window generated a novel behaviour. ⚠️ The 7:45 rush did not exist before the protocol and was created by it.
4. Protein fell without anyone noticing, because eating opportunities carry protein and removing them removes protein.
5. ⚠️ Widening the window improved the outcome, which is the most counterintuitive result here and follows directly from §21.10: compression produces compensation.
6. And the two explanations he reached for — "my metabolism adapted" and "I lack discipline" — are the only two available if nobody has told you compensation is expected. ⚠️ One is physiologically wrong; the other is a moral verdict on a normal biological process.

He was told the protocol and not its trajectory. ⚠️ Whose responsibility is that? Write the 40-word disclosure you'd want attached to every popular diet protocol.

Widening the window improved his outcome. ⚠️ Explain why to someone who believes the fast duration is the active ingredient. What's their strongest reply?

⚠️ His protein fell by removing eating opportunities. Which other nutrients would you expect to fall the same way? How would someone detect it without a diary?

"One decision instead of forty" is the honest reason he started. ⚠️ Is decision-reduction a legitimate goal of a dietary intervention, or a way of avoiding the harder work? Argue both.

Step 2 — Find the disappeared meals. ⚠️ What eating did the protocol abolish that had never been a decision? List it. That's where the initial effect came from and it's usually 400–700 kcal.
Step 3 — Look for your 7:45 rush.
In the last hour before my window closes, do I eat something hurried, standing, unplanned, and not driven by hunger? ____
How often, in the last month? ____
⚠️ If yes: name it. Naming it is most of the fix.
Step 4 — Check your protein. ⚠️ Removing two eating opportunities removes their protein. Count one day inside the window (Chapter 8). If you're below your target, the window did it.
Step 5 — And consider going wider.
⚠️ "If I moved from 16:8 to 14:10 and ate a real breakfast, what would happen to my lunch?"
For Theo the answer was minus 300 kcal. Compression produces compensation, and the compensation is bigger than the compression.
Step 6 — Write the prediction you weren't given:
"This will probably stop working around month _. When it does, it will be because _____, not because my metabolism adapted and not because I lack discipline."
⚠️ Fill it in now. It is the single most useful sentence in this case study, and Theo would have written it correctly if anyone had asked him.
