⚠️ Sunday's Plan, Thursday's Bin
Kwabena planned seven meals. ⚠️ Three happened. £14 of food went in the bin. He concluded he needed "more discipline."
Wednesday failed because of a meeting that was in his calendar on Sunday. Thursday failed because Wednesday did. Friday failed because the plan put a NEW RECIPE on the lowest-energy night.
⚠️ Three of four failures were predictable on Sunday. None was a discipline problem.

§31.1 — Does Planning Help?
🟡 Associated with better diet quality (NutriNet-Santé), observational and confounded (Ch 2 §2.3).
⚠️ The honest framing: planning changes what is IN THE HOUSE, and Chapter 22 established that what's in the house determines a great deal of what gets eaten. The plan is a delivery mechanism; the LIST is the intervention.
§31.3–31.4 — Map First, Work Backwards
Record: who's in each night · what time you're back · ⚠️ honest energy · fixed commitments · nights out · what's already in the fridge.
⚠️ Classify by CAPACITY, not cuisine: HIGH (45+ min) · MEDIUM (25–35) · LOW (<15, assembly) · ⚠️ ZERO · OUT.
⚠️ "A plan with seven medium-to-high nights in it is not a plan. It is a wish with days attached."
⚠️ BACKWARDS: map capacity → assign meal TYPE → choose food last. The constraint comes first and the food comes last, which feels wrong to anyone who enjoys cooking and is the whole point. ⚠️ Kwabena's rebuild: same cooking time (+5 min), 3/7 → 7/7.
§31.5 — A Repertoire, Not a Menu
⚠️ 10–15 meals you can cook without reading anything — known, predictably timed, ingredients usually in, survives substitution, cookable tired.
One new recipe a week, on a HIGH night, cooked 3–4 times before it counts. ⚠️ ~12 additions a year.
⚠️ Most cuisines run on a small rotating repertoire. "Rotation is not failure. It is how eating has always worked."
⚠️ §31.6 — THE SHOPPING LIST IS THE INTERVENTION
A plan without a list is a wish.
Standing list (12–20 items, from Ch 30's decoded shelf) + variable list · ordered by SHOP LAYOUT · checked against the fridge first · ⚠️ and NOTHING "just in case."
⚠️ Shopping without a list produces more unplanned purchases, skewed to Group 4. Shopping hungry is worse. ONLINE ORDERING REMOVES THE AISLE and is one of the few effective structural interventions available to an individual.
⚠️ Aspirational purchases are the most reliable waste category — Kwabena's spinach, bought "because it's good to have."
§31.7–31.8 — Batch Cooking, Honestly
Delivers: prep economies · fewer cooking events · a meal on a zero night · better ingredient use. Costs: 2–3 real hours · ⚠️ FREEZER SPACE (the binding constraint) · containers · texture · and —
⚠️ PALATABILITY DECAY, which is what actually kills it. The same chilli Monday to Thursday fails, and the rest goes in the bin. The intuitive fix — one big batch of one thing — MAXIMIZES the problem.
⚠️ THE FIX: COMPONENTS, NOT COMPLETE MEALS
A grain · a protein · a roasted vegetable tray · a quick vegetable · a sauce · a flavour hit.
⚠️ Four components make far more than four meals. Rice + chicken + roast veg + yoghurt sauce is a bowl; the same chicken + slaw + a wrap is a wrap; the same veg + lentils + vinaigrette is a salad. No two dinners are the same dinner.
⚠️ Two rules: keep components UNSEASONED and season at ASSEMBLY (a chilli-and-cumin chickpea can only go one direction); store them SEPARATELY.
⚠️ One ~100-minute Sunday session → five dinners, longest weekday assembly 15 minutes.
§31.9 — The Freezer
Freezes well: soups, stews, sauces, bread, cooked grains, raw meat and fish, milk and cheese, herbs in oil, stock in cubes. Badly: salad, cucumber, boiled potatoes, cream sauces, yoghurt, fried food.

§31.10–31.11 — Defaults, and the Night That Breaks Plans
⚠️ The same breakfast most days is a FEATURE. Fixed slots decide for you. Variety is a value, not a nutritional requirement above a fairly low floor (Part III, Ch 27).
⚠️ §31.11 — THE BAD-NIGHT PLAN — is the highest-yield item in the chapter.
Decided in advance · shelf-stable or frozen · under 15 minutes · ⚠️ GENUINELY ACCEPTABLE (not a punishment) · on the standing list · and NOT eaten on good nights.
⚠️ The takeaway isn't the problem. The problem is that the takeaway means the plan "failed," and a failed plan gets abandoned. A bad-night plan converts a plan failure into a plan FEATURE.
§31.12–31.13 — Planned-Overs and Waste
Deliberate oversizing · the second meal designed in · ⚠️ TRANSFORMATION not repetition · lunches. (Food safety: cool fast, refrigerate within ~2 h, reheat thoroughly; rice specifically — Ch 20 §20.12b.)

⚠️ BUY FRESH FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE WEEK AND FROZEN OR TINNED FOR THE SECOND. Nothing spoils, the late-week nights are the low-capacity ones anyway, and frozen vegetables are nutritionally comparable.
⚠️ §31.12b — Breakfast and Lunch, Which Nobody Plans
Roughly two-thirds of eating occasions, and where Chapter 22 found Group 4 intake concentrated — drinks, breakfast and snacks, not dinner.
Breakfast: ⚠️ this is where DEFAULTS belong. Pick two, rotate, stop deciding. Lunch: ⚠️ planned-overs are the single most efficient answer.
⚠️ A bought lunch five days a week is £1,500–2,200 a year — the largest single number in Part VI, from the meal people plan least.
§31.13b — More Than One Person
⚠️ THE SHORT-ORDER COOK is where households actually break — a different meal per person converts one cooking event into three, permanently.
Fixes: ⚠️ deconstructed meals (components solve this too) · one meal with a guaranteed acceptable element (Ch 25 §25.6) · ⚠️ split planning, shopping and cooking as three explicit jobs · a short agreed veto list.
⚠️ §31.15 — THE NINE SLOTS
1. Map the week. 2. Label each night's capacity. 3. ⚠️ ZERO night first — the bad-night meal. 4. HIGH night second — cook-once, oversized. 5. The night AFTER it — assembly. 6. Fill MEDIUM from the repertoire. 7. One new recipe max, on a high night. 8. Shop the fridge, then write the list. 9. Fresh first half, frozen second.
⚠️ Fifteen minutes on a Sunday, and it removes the four failure modes structurally rather than requiring you to overcome them.

Fails if: unpredictable shifts · a shared kitchen · a freezer compartment or none · buying day to day · a bus ride to the shop · learning to cook from zero · no slack to absorb a wasted ingredient.
⚠️ "If the right-hand column describes you, this chapter's advice is not wrong — it is addressed to someone else, and following it will mostly produce a sense of failure."
⚠️ Case Study 2: identical advice to two households. Only the two ZERO-RESOURCE items transferred — buy frozen for later in the week, don't buy speculatively. ⚠️ "Everything else is not advice.
