Chapter 38 β€” Further Reading

⚠️ The last of these pages, and it is deliberately the shortest.

⚠️ Chapter 37's further reading told you to reread Chapter 1. That still stands and is better advice than anything below. ⚠️ What follows is for the four things this chapter claims, plus a short list for what to do next.

1. ⚠️ Does teaching people to evaluate evidence work?

⚠️ Β§38.2's central claim β€” that transferring a FILTER beats transferring a LIST β€” is the least evidenced thing in this chapter, and it is held at 🟑. ⚠️ This is where you check it, and you should.

Research on media literacy and misinformation-inoculation interventions. ⚠️ The "prebunking" literature, mostly from political misinformation rather than health, is the closest thing to a test of §38.2's claim.

⚠️ What you will find: short-term effects that are real, decay that is faster than anyone teaching would like, and a persistent question about whether the skill transfers to claims the learner cares about. ⚠️ Which is exactly the objection §38.2 raises against itself.

Research on critical-appraisal training in clinical education β€” ⚠️ a longer tradition, and a better-designed one. ⚠️ Read it for what an actually-tested version of "we taught people to evaluate studies" produced, which is more modest than the enthusiasm around it.

Work on scientific-reasoning interventions in schools, ⚠️ including the Informed Health Choices programme and its trials β€” the closest thing to a randomized test of teaching claim-evaluation to a general population. ⚠️ It is a genuinely encouraging body of work and it is small.

⚠️ If after reading these you conclude that §38.2 is over-claiming, that is a defensible reading and the chapter said so first.

2. Why knowing doesn't produce doing

⚠️ The hook's problem β€” eighteen months between reading and acting β€” has a substantial literature and it is not in nutrition.

The intention–behaviour gap literature. ⚠️ The finding that matters: intention predicts behaviour much less well than people expect, and most of the variance in whether an intention becomes an action is situational rather than motivational.

Implementation intentions (Gollwitzer; Ch 33 Β§33.8) β€” ⚠️ the best-supported bridge across that gap, and the reason Chapter 31's bad-night plan works.

Habit research (Wendy Wood; Ch 33) β€” ⚠️ including the finding that people who appear to have more self-control report exercising it less often. Β§38.9 rests on this.

⚠️ Read these and Chapter 33 together. Between them they explain why §38.6's framework has a section 6, and why most frameworks that omit it fail.

3. ⚠️ Where the leverage actually is

⚠️ §38.2 concludes that if you found this book useful and want it to matter beyond your own kitchen, the lever is not your shopping.

⚠️ Your national and local consultation processes. ⚠️ Genuinely: find out how food and health consultations work where you live, and what the response rates are. ⚠️ They are usually very low, which is what makes twenty minutes worth something.

⚠️ School food standards and governance β€” ⚠️ how they are set in your country, and who can raise them. Β§36.7 rates them 🟒 and they are among the most reachable interventions on the ladder.

⚠️ Institutional procurement β€” ⚠️ hospitals, universities, workplaces, care homes. Chapter 29 Β§29.4 and Chapter 36 Β§36.7. ⚠️ Underused, and frequently decided by a committee that would welcome an informed submission.**

⚠️ Your national eating disorders organization (Ch 34 Β§34.14) and your national food safety agency (Ch 31) β€” ⚠️ the two organizations in this book worth knowing about before you need them.

4. If you want to go further into the science

⚠️ Named as categories rather than titles, because the specific texts date faster than the advice.

⚠️ A current graduate-level nutrition textbook β€” ⚠️ for the biochemistry and physiology this book deliberately compressed. Chapters 3 to 6 are the parts most worth deepening.

⚠️ An epidemiology methods text β€” ⚠️ the single highest-value thing on this page for a reader who wants to go further, and it will make Chapter 2 look shallow, which is correct.

⚠️ Your national dietary guidelines' EVIDENCE REVIEW documents, not the summary β€” ⚠️ usually thousands of pages, free, and they show exactly how a recommendation was reached and what was excluded. ⚠️ Almost nobody reads them and they are the most underrated source in nutrition.

⚠️ Cochrane reviews on any nutrition question you care about β€” ⚠️ and read the "quality of evidence" ratings, which are the discipline this book's verdict scale is a simplified version of.

⚠️ And the journals' own retraction and correction notices β€” ⚠️ a bleak but educational habit, and the fastest way to internalize Chapter 37 Β§37.6's heuristic.

5. ⚠️ What not to do next

⚠️ Do not read another general-audience nutrition book immediately. ⚠️ Chapter 37 §37.6 explains why the next one will be exciting, and Chapter 37 §37.2b explains what happened to the last sixteen exciting things.

⚠️ Do not buy anything. ⚠️ §38.5's 133 ❌ and 🟠 verdicts are the book's largest financial effect and they only pay out if you decline things.

⚠️ Do not audit anyone else's diet (§38.9b).

⚠️ And do not reread this book cover to cover. ⚠️ Reread the four chapters in Β§38.5b β€” 2, 10, 18 and 33 β€” and your own two-page framework. ⚠️ That is a better use of an afternoon than any of the above.

6. The book's own apparatus

⚠️ Appendix D ⚠️ The evidence evaluation toolkit β€” Β§37.7's six questions as a worksheet
⚠️ Appendix E ⚠️ The master claim index β€” every logged verdict, which is where Β§38.5's arithmetic can be checked and Β§38.7's "is it new or is it back?" gets answered
⚠️ Appendix F ⚠️ Worksheets, including §38.6's framework template
Appendix H ⚠️ Supplement evidence grades (Ch 13, 16)
Appendix I Glossary
⚠️ Appendix G ⚠️ Special populations β€” pregnancy, older age, clinical, athletic

⚠️ Appendix E is the one to keep. ⚠️ It is the only object in this book designed to still be useful in 2035, and its use is a lookup: before you act on a claim, check whether it is already in there with a verdict attached.

⚠️ One last recommendation

Write the two pages.

⚠️ Β§38.6. It takes an hour, nobody does it, and Theo β€” the reader in this book who paid the most attention β€” never got round to it either.

⚠️ Everything else on this page is optional. That one is the chapter.
