Chapter 37 โ Exercises
Three tiers. ๐ช threshold; ๐ retrieval; ๐ช reflection.
โ ๏ธ This chapter synthesizes thirty-six others. Tier 3 in particular asks you to check the synthesis against the chapters it summarizes โ and ยง37.13 says that where the summary is more confident than the chapter, you should trust the chapter.
Tier 1 โ Recall and Comprehension
R1. ๐ช โ ๏ธ State the threshold. Then state the SECOND half and explain why it is the half that changes anything.
R2. โ ๏ธ Reproduce the one-page answer from the hook, from memory. โ ๏ธ What was Theo's reaction, and why does the chapter say the reaction matters more than the list?
R3. โ ๏ธ Give ยง37.1's four reasons boring works. โ ๏ธ Which does the chapter call the deepest, and why?
R4. โ ๏ธ Describe ยง37.2's two independent routes. โ ๏ธ What does the convergence establish, and what does it NOT establish? โ ๏ธ Which route is the genuinely independent one, and why?
R5. โ ๏ธ From ยง37.2b, give three exciting claims that FAILED, three that were ABSORBED, and two that are UNRESOLVED.
R6. โ ๏ธ What do the ABSORBED claims have in common? โ ๏ธ State the rule ยง37.2b derives, and the two caveats it attaches.
R7. โ ๏ธ Give six rows of ยง37.3's plate with their confidence levels. โ ๏ธ What is deliberately absent from the table, and which chapter is the reason?
R8. โ ๏ธ List ยง37.4's optional items. โ ๏ธ Then list the six things that are NOT optional.
R9. โ ๏ธ Give ยง37.5's list of what genuinely differs between people, in order. โ ๏ธ What does NOT meaningfully differ?
R10. โ ๏ธ State ยง37.5's one-sentence honest personalization instruction.
R11. โ ๏ธ Give ยง37.6's six mechanisms by which the information system rewards novelty. โ ๏ธ State the heuristic that follows.
R12. โ ๏ธ Why does the chapter say Coach Brandt is responding to incentives correctly?
R13. โ ๏ธ Give ยง37.6b's four reasons refuted claims return. โ ๏ธ What are the two consequences?
R14. โ ๏ธ Give ยง37.7's six questions in order. โ ๏ธ Which one does ยง37.2b support historically?
R15. โ ๏ธ What is the self-diagnostic from Chapter 33 ยง33.3, and why is it in this chapter?
R16. โ ๏ธ Give four of ยง37.8's six things that would change the author's mind. โ ๏ธ And four that would NOT. โ ๏ธ Why is the asymmetry deliberate?
R17. โ ๏ธ Name the four places ยง37.9 says the book has most likely been overconfident.
R18. โ ๏ธ What does ยง37.9 expect to move in the next twenty years, and what does it NOT expect to reverse? โ ๏ธ Which of ยง37.1's four reasons is the justification?
R19. โ ๏ธ State ยง37.11's distinction. โ ๏ธ What is firm, and what is not? โ ๏ธ What are the two comfortable extremes and why is each attractive?
R20. โ ๏ธ What does ยง37.12 say to do on Monday, and what is the meta-instruction?
Tier 2 โ Application
A1. ๐ โ ๏ธ The six-question check, live. Find three current nutrition claims โ news, social media, a product page.
| โ ๏ธ Claim | โ ๏ธ Failed at which question? |
|---|---|
a) โ ๏ธ How many failed at question 1? (Theo's ratio was 14 of 31.) b) โ ๏ธ Did any survive all six? c) โ ๏ธ If one did, is it already in ยง37.3's plate?
A2. โ ๏ธ Replaces or adjusts. Take five claims you have believed at some point.
a) โ ๏ธ Which replaced the boring answer, and which adjusted it? b) โ ๏ธ Check each against ยง37.2b's outcome column. c) โ ๏ธ Does the rule hold on your own sample?
A3. โ ๏ธ Write your own week. ยง37.3b.
a) โ ๏ธ Seven days, real food, food you can cook and afford. b) โ ๏ธ Check it row by row against ยง37.3. c) โ ๏ธ How many rows do you meet? d) โ ๏ธ Does it contain a named bad-night meal and at least two meals that exist only because you want to eat them?
A4. โ ๏ธ The optional audit. ยง37.4.
a) โ ๏ธ Which optional items are you currently doing? b) โ ๏ธ What do they cost you in money, time and attention? c) โ ๏ธ Which of the six non-optional items are you NOT doing? d) โ ๏ธ Compare the two lists. Most readers find the imbalance uncomfortable.
A5. โ ๏ธ Your ยง37.8. Write your own pre-specified criteria.
โ ๏ธ "I would abandon this if: __" โ ๏ธ "I would NOT abandon it for: __"
a) โ ๏ธ Is your first list achievable in principle? If not, it is not a criterion. b) โ ๏ธ Is your second list symmetrical with the first?
A6. โ ๏ธ Pick your two. ยง37.12.
a) โ ๏ธ Which two, and from which row? b) โ ๏ธ Could you still be doing both at Christmas? c) โ ๏ธ What did you NOT pick that has a larger theoretical effect? โ ๏ธ Why is that the right call?
Tier 3 โ Analysis and Synthesis
S1. ๐ช โ ๏ธ Interrogate the threshold. ยง37.1 says boring is the mechanism, not an apology.
a) โ ๏ธ Steelman the opposite: that "boring" is a rationalization for a field that has failed to produce anything. b) โ ๏ธ Which of ยง37.1's four reasons survives that steelman? c) โ ๏ธ Is the threshold falsifiable? โ ๏ธ ยง37.8 attempts to make it so. Assess whether it succeeds.
S2. โ ๏ธ The convergence, attacked. ยง37.2 admits the routes are only partly independent.
a) โ ๏ธ Construct the strongest case that all three routes share a hidden common assumption. b) โ ๏ธ The chapter says the environmental route is the genuinely separate one. Is that right? c) โ ๏ธ What evidence would establish genuine independence?
S3. โ ๏ธ The survivorship problem. ยง37.2b concedes the boring answer looks robust partly because it is what remained.
a) โ ๏ธ Is that concession fatal, or does convergence rescue it? b) โ ๏ธ Construct a field where "what survived is right" would be clearly false. c) โ ๏ธ What distinguishes nutrition from your example โ or does nothing?
S4. โ ๏ธ Novelty as a negative signal. ยง37.6's heuristic.
a) โ ๏ธ Is it true, or is it an excuse for conservatism? b) โ ๏ธ Apply it to a finding that WAS new and turned out to be right. โ ๏ธ Find one in this book. c) โ ๏ธ How would you avoid using this heuristic to dismiss the next genuine advance?
S5. โ ๏ธ The synthesis problem. ยง37.13 says a synthesis chapter is the most dangerous kind, because preferences get laundered into "what the evidence says."
a) โ ๏ธ Pick three rows of ยง37.3 and check them against their source chapters. b) โ ๏ธ Is the summary more confident than the chapter anywhere? c) โ ๏ธ If so, what does that tell you โ about this book, and about synthesis chapters generally?
S6. ๐ โ ๏ธ Kelsey's exclusion. Case Study 2's fifth plate.
a) โ ๏ธ Is it coherent for a nutrition textbook to say nutrition should come last for some readers? b) โ ๏ธ What would this chapter have to look like to be safe for her? โ ๏ธ Is that chapter still useful to everyone else? c) โ ๏ธ Chapter 34 ยง34.7 predicted exactly this risk about this book. Did ยง37.10 handle it adequately?
๐ช Reflection
M1. ๐ช โ ๏ธ What did you feel when you read the hook's one-page answer? โ ๏ธ Disappointment, relief, or suspicion? โ ๏ธ ยง37.13 says disappointment is a reliable signal of truth in nutrition. Does that ring true for you, or does it sound like a convenient thing for an author to claim?
M2. โ ๏ธ Theo: "I read a whole book for that?" โ ๏ธ What did YOU want the book to tell you that it hasn't? Be specific โ the answer is informative.
M3. โ ๏ธ ยง37.4's optional list. โ ๏ธ How many of those have you done, and for how long? โ ๏ธ What were you buying with the effort?
M4. โ ๏ธ ยง37.6 says you cannot sell a subscription to "eat more lentils." โ ๏ธ How much of what you believe about food came from someone with something to sell? Trace one belief back.
M5. ๐ โ ๏ธ Theo acted on Chapter 11's advice only after it survived his own filter โ eighteen months after reading it. โ ๏ธ What do you already know and not do? โ ๏ธ And what would have to happen for knowing to become doing? โ ๏ธ Chapter 38 is about that question, so answer it before you get there.
