Case Study 1 — The $180 Test: Does Any of This Work for the Ortiz-Lindqvists?
The Ortiz-Lindqvist household is an illustrative composite carried through this book — Marisol Ortiz, Erik Lindqvist, Alma (7, peanut allergy), Nico (13). ⚠️ The prices and the arithmetic are typical; the family is constructed.**
Setup
⚠️ Every chapter in Part IV should be tested against a household that can't absorb its recommendations. This one gets tested against the one we already know.
Marisol did the UPF audit. Three days, everything classified.
Result: ⚠️ approximately 58% of the household's calories came from Group 4.
She was not pleased with the number and her first sentence was the one this case study is about:
"So basically everything I feed my family is the bad one."
⚠️ That is exactly the conclusion §22.12 exists to prevent, and it arrived within nine seconds of her seeing the figure.
Where the 58% actually was

Two things fell out immediately.
1. ⚠️ Nearly half of it was drinks, cereal and snacks — none of which requires cooking to change. §22.13's point, confirmed on a real household.
2. ⚠️ The sliced bread was 12%, and Marisol's reaction to that was the most useful thing in the conversation:
"Bread? Bread is the problem now?"
It is §22.7's second objection, delivered by someone who has never heard of NOVA. ⚠️ And the honest answer is: no. Bread is not the problem. It's Group 4 because of an emulsifier, and the classification is telling you something it doesn't mean.
We left the bread alone.
What the constraints actually were
⚠️ Before recommending anything, we listed what she was working with. §22.11's seven, applied.

⚠️ The binding constraints are time on three specific nights, freezer space, and waste tolerance. Not knowledge. Not motivation. Not skill.
Any plan that ignores those three will fail, and she will conclude it was her fault.
What we changed
Ranked by §22.13, and nothing on this list requires a new cooking night.
Tier 1 — no cooking required

Tier 2 — one cooking change, not three

She wanted to change all three. I argued her down to one, on Chapter 10 §10.4 grounds and because the freezer holds four portions, not twelve. ⚠️ The storage constraint set the plan, not the ambition.
Tier 3 — the Group 3 shelf
⚠️ This is the part that mattered most and cost the least.
We built a standing list of Group 1 and Group 3 items that don't spoil:
Tinned tomatoes · tinned beans and chickpeas · tinned tuna and sardines · frozen peas, sweetcorn, spinach, mixed veg · oats · rice · dried pasta · eggs · onions, garlic, carrots, potatoes · frozen berries · peanut butter (⚠️ not in the house — Alma; sunflower seed butter instead).
⚠️ Every item: cheap, shelf-stable or freezer-stable, no waste risk, minimal skill.
Marisol's response: "I already buy half of this." ⚠️ Correct — and that's the point. She thought she was failing and she was already doing most of it.

58% to 35%, and twelve dollars a week cheaper.
⚠️ Nobody cooked from scratch. Nobody eliminated anything entirely. Two ready meals a week survived on purpose.
💡 Aha moment. ⚠️ The single largest change — cereal to oats — was cheaper, faster to prepare, required no skill, and removed eleven percentage points.
It is not a sacrifice and it is not a recipe. It's a substitution inside the same slot in the day.
§22.13's whole strategy is this move, repeated: ⚠️ find the Group 4 item, find the Group 1 or Group 3 item that occupies the same slot, and swap it — without changing when, how, or how much effort the household spends on food.
Almost every recommendation that fails does so because it changes the slot.
What we didn't do
⚠️ This list is as important as the other one.
We didn't aim for zero. ⚠️ There's no threshold and no reason to think one exists (§22.12). 35% is a large change and it's stable.
We didn't touch the bread. ⚠️ §22.7's edge case, and treating it as a target would have cost credibility for no benefit.
We didn't tell Alma anything. Seven years old, one restriction already in her life she didn't choose (Chapter 28). ⚠️ Chapter 20's reasoning, unchanged.
We didn't use the word "processed" with Nico. ⚠️ Thirteen, and Chapter 21 §21.12's four features apply to any framework that gives a teenager a category of forbidden food.
And we didn't moralize. ⚠️ Marisol arrived at "everything I feed my family is the bad one" without help. The single most useful sentence in the whole consultation was: "You were already doing most of this and nobody told you."
Analysis
1. ⚠️ 58% is around the population norm in high-income countries. She was not failing. She was average, and average is the finding.
2. Nearly half the Group 4 intake required no cooking to change. ⚠️ Drinks, cereal, snacks and yoghurt were 47% of it.
3. The binding constraints were time on three nights, freezer volume and waste tolerance — ⚠️ not knowledge, motivation or skill. A plan that ignores those produces failure and then self-blame.
4. ⚠️ The storage constraint set the plan. The freezer holds four portions, so one batch-cook night, not three.
5. It got cheaper. ⚠️ Oats beat cereal, plain yoghurt beats flavoured, tinned and frozen beat packaged — and Group 3 staples are among the cheapest food available. §22.11's problem is that Group 4 is cheapest per calorie; §22.13's answer is that Group 3 is close behind and Group 4's specific convenience premium is avoidable.
6. ⚠️ The bread stayed, the ready meals stayed, and the outcome was still a 23-point shift.
7. And her first reaction was moral. ⚠️ Nine seconds from a number to "everything I feed my family is the bad one." §22.12's first warning exists because that reaction is the default one.
