Case Study 1 — Eleven Products, Two Hours: Marisol Decodes the Shelf
The Ortiz-Lindqvist household is an illustrative composite carried through this book — Marisol Ortiz, Erik Lindqvist, Alma (7), Nico (13). ⚠️ The labelling rules, the claim definitions and the arithmetic are real; the products are constructed composites and no real brand is described.
Setup
Marisol has done this before, twice.
Chapter 20: she audited what she bought organic and reallocated about $940 a year into food her family actually eats. Chapter 22: she audited ultra-processed food and went from 58% of calories to 35%, and the shop got $12 a week cheaper.
⚠️ This time the question is narrower and, she said, more annoying:
"I've changed what I buy twice. I still don't actually know what's in most of it. I just moved to the ones with better-looking packets."
⚠️ That is a fair self-assessment and it is the gap this chapter exists for.
She listed eleven products she buys most weeks. It took her four minutes; she didn't need to check.

Marisol's reaction to the basil:

⚠️ And then the sentence that mattered:
"Why have I never seen this before? It's printed right there."
Because nobody had told her it was there, and because it is set in small type inside a list she had never read.

💡 Aha moment. ⚠️ "The beans are the cheapest thing on the list and they've got the most fibre and the fewest calories per hundred grams and I've been treating them as what you have when you can't be bothered."
Baked beans: high fibre, meaningful protein, ~81 kcal/100 g, under a pound a tin.
⚠️ Chapter 11's fibre, Chapter 22's Group 3, and Chapter 32's economics, all sitting in a tin she had been slightly embarrassed about.
The front-of-pack sort (§30.7)
Across eleven products she counted the front-of-pack claims and sorted them.

⚠️ And she checked the own-brand version of six other items she hadn't listed. Four had functionally identical ingredients lists.

"I thought this was going to mean standing in the aisle reading packets forever. It took one evening and now I just buy the list."
⚠️ Which is the meta-step in §30.13, and it is the reason the protocol is worth two hours rather than being a permanent tax on shopping.
Analysis
1. ⚠️ QUID was the finding. Five products declared percentages she had never looked for, and the basil at 0.3% changed a purchase on its own. The rule is legally mandated and functionally invisible.
2. ⚠️ "No refined sugar" and 21 g of sugars coexist, truthfully, on the same package.
3. ⚠️ 31 of 41 front-of-pack claims were provenance. Three of forty-one changed a decision.
4. ⚠️ The energy-density column reversed her ranking. The products she thought were the healthy ones were the most energy-dense; the tin she was faintly embarrassed about was the best thing on the list.
5. ⚠️ Own-brand comparison was the largest single saving, and it required reading two ingredients lists side by side for fifteen seconds.
6. She changed four items out of eleven and kept five deliberately — ⚠️ Chapter 10's adherence finding and Chapter 18's "keep one on purpose," applied to a shelf.
7. ⚠️ And the ongoing cost is zero. Decode once, decide once, shop from the list.
