Case Study 1 — Coach Brandt's 30-Day Challenge: What 214 People Actually Changed
Coach Brandt is the illustrative influencer figure carried through this book. The challenge structure, the participant reports and the decomposition are constructed from the genre; the bundling arithmetic and the mechanism are not.
Setup
"30 Days Seed Oil Free. No calorie counting. No macros. Just remove the poison."
214 people signed up. $49 each.** That's **$10,486, which is worth stating because it's part of the evidence about how the claim is being made rather than a snide aside.
The rules, as posted:
- Eliminate all seed oils — canola, corn, cottonseed, soybean, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, rice bran
- Read every label. If it's in there, it's out
- Cook with butter, ghee, tallow, coconut oil or olive oil only
- No restaurant food unless you can confirm the cooking fat
- Eat as much as you want of anything else
At day 30, Brandt posted the results. Self-reported, no control group, no measurement of anything — which is rung 3 on Chapter 2's ladder, 214 times.

Brandt's conclusion: "Two hundred and fourteen people. Thirty days. No calorie counting. Tell me again it's about calories."
⚠️ And here's the thing that makes this a case study rather than a debunk: those reports are probably broadly accurate. People did lose weight. They did feel better.
The question is what rule 4 did.
Decomposing the bundle
Chapter 17 §17.1, shape 8: count the changes.
To follow rule 1 and rule 4 for thirty days, a participant must eliminate:

And what a participant must therefore add: ⚠️ home cooking, from ingredients, most days.
Count: eight categories removed, one behaviour added. ⚠️ And rule 5 — "eat as much as you want" — is doing enormous concealed work, because after rules 1–4 there is not very much left that a person can eat without cooking it themselves.
💡 Aha moment. ⚠️ The rule that did the most work is rule 4, and it isn't about oil at all.
"No restaurant food unless you can confirm the cooking fat" is, in practice, "cook at home for thirty days."
That is one of the more effective dietary interventions available, it has decent evidence behind it, and it was included as a purity-enforcement measure rather than as the intervention. Nobody in the challenge — including Brandt — is crediting it.
This is §19.11 in a controlled setting, and it's why the seed oil hypothesis is so hard to test in the real world: you cannot design a seed oil elimination that isn't also an ultra-processed food elimination. The exposures aren't separable in a cohort, and they aren't separable in a challenge either.
The four participants Brandt didn't post about
Not because he hid them — because nobody reports these, in any challenge, ever.
Kelsey, 34. Lost 4 kg, felt substantially better, and went back to takeaway on day 32. ⚠️ By week seven she had regained it, and concluded that she'd "fallen off." She had not learned what she'd done, so she couldn't repeat it deliberately.
Marcus, 51. Followed it exactly, lost 1 kg, felt no different. ⚠️ He already cooked at home six nights a week. The bundle had almost nothing to remove, which is the cleanest natural experiment in the whole challenge and the one nobody looked at.
Dionne, 41. Lost 6 kg, joint pain improved substantially. ⚠️ She also stopped drinking during the challenge because most of her drinking happened at restaurants, which rule 4 eliminated. She attributes the joint improvement to seed oils. Chapter 12 would have another candidate.
Ren, 27. Lost 3 kg, then spent $340 over the following two months on tallow, ghee, avocado oil, and a subscription snack box marketed as seed-oil-free. ⚠️ Several items in the box were ultra-processed products reformulated with coconut or palm oil — which satisfies rule 1 and reintroduces the eight categories rule 1 was accidentally removing.
⚠️ Ren's case is the important one and it's the predictable endpoint of the whole movement.
Once the market supplies seed-oil-free versions of everything rule 1 removed, rule 1 stops working — because the mechanism was never the oil. The crisps come back. The packaged baked goods come back. The convenience meals come back, fried in beef tallow at a 40% price premium.
And the intervention that was actually doing the work — cooking at home — quietly ends.
What Marcus tells you
Marcus is the control group, accidentally.
He already cooked most nights. He was already avoiding seven of the eight categories without thinking about it. The challenge asked him to swap his cooking oil and change essentially nothing else.
Result: 1 kg, no symptom change.
⚠️ That is what an isolated seed oil elimination looks like — as close to one as this challenge produced — and it is consistent with §19.5's finding that the mechanism's central prediction fails.
One person is rung 3 evidence and I'm not asking you to conclude anything from Marcus. ⚠️ I'm asking you to notice that the challenge contained the discriminating comparison and nobody ran it — because the participants who changed the most were the most enthusiastic, and the participant who isolated the variable had nothing to post.
This is selection, not dishonesty, and it operates in every uncontrolled intervention with self-reported outcomes.
What a better challenge would look like
Design it yourself before reading this, then compare.

Group (b) would almost certainly outperform group (a). ⚠️ And that result would end the movement, which is a reason it will not be run by anyone selling a seed oil challenge — and also a reason to be careful, because "they won't run the study that would refute them" is a suppressed-truth claim if you can't point to the study being declined.
Analysis
1. The reported results are probably real. ⚠️ This is not a case of people imagining improvement. Eight categories of food were removed and home cooking was added.
2. Rule 4 was the intervention. "No restaurant food unless you can confirm the cooking fat" is a cook-at-home mandate wearing a purity justification.
3. ⚠️ "Eat as much as you want" is concealed restriction. After rules 1–4 there is very little available that isn't home-cooked from ingredients — Chapter 4 §4.7's unmeasured deficit.
4. Marcus is the control and nobody looked at him. ⚠️ The participant who isolated the variable had no result to report, which is selection operating invisibly.
5. Dionne stopped drinking without noticing (Chapter 12), and attributed the effect elsewhere. Bundles hide their own contents from the people inside them.
6. ⚠️ Ren's trajectory is the movement's endpoint. As the market supplies seed-oil-free ultra-processed food, the bundle unbundles — and the only thing left is the price premium.
7. And Kelsey couldn't repeat it, because she never knew what she'd done. ⚠️ That is the practical cost of a wrong explanation for a real result: it isn't reproducible on purpose.

⚠️ Brandt's results are probably accurate and his explanation is probably wrong. Does he have an obligation to find out which? Does your answer change because he charged $49?

Rule 4 is presented as purity enforcement and functions as a cook-at-home mandate. Is that deceptive, or is it a legitimate way to get people to do something good for reasons they'll accept? ⚠️ Chapter 17 §17.13 said comparison beats debunking — is this the same argument?

Marcus is the accidental control. Design the smallest change to Brandt's challenge that would have surfaced him, and say why it wasn't made.

§19.11 argues that seed oil intake and UPF intake aren't separable exposures. Brandt's challenge demonstrates this at the individual level. ⚠️ Is there ANY real-world intervention that separates them? Describe it, and say who would volunteer.

Your Turn
If you have ever done an elimination — any elimination, any food, any duration — decompose it.
Step 1 — List everything the rules removed, not just the named target. ⚠️ Be exhaustive. This is the step people skip and it is the whole exercise.

⚠️ If the answer is no, the named target was not the mechanism — and you can find out what was, which is worth considerably more than the thirty days.
Step 6 — And the Kelsey question, which is the one that matters:
"When it ended, did I know what I'd done well enough to do it again on purpose?"
⚠️ A result you cannot reproduce deliberately is an anecdote about yourself. Chapter 10 §10.4's adherence finding is the reason this matters more than the thirty days did.
