The core idea

The four foundation settings are creative choices, not quality dials. Frame rate, shutter, resolution, and sensor are not "low / medium / high." Each answers a question the story asks — and a beginner who picks each on purpose out-shoots someone with better gear on automatic.

Definitions

Resolution — the decision

Choose… When
4K You want reframe/punch-in/stabilize headroom, or a second angle from one camera. Strong modern default.
1080p Single fixed framing, simple job, tight storage, older/slower computer. Honest and fine.
6K/8K You're a specialist with the storage and computers to match. Rarely needed.

Reframe headroom is the real reason to shoot 4K for a 1080 delivery — you shoot for the edit. Cost: 4× the files and editing load → use proxies (Chapter 27).

The sensor, in three lines

  • A sensor is a grid of light-buckets (photosites); it turns light into numbers, one brightness value per point.
  • Fill the buckets well (enough light) → clean image. Starve them (too dark) → noise. That's the root of Chapter 5's exposure.
  • How many buckets = resolution. How big the whole grid is = sensor size. They're different specs; both can be "4K."
