Case Study 2: One Mug, Seven Frames — A Composition Shoot-Along

Case Study 1 took a finished film apart to see how a master composes. This one is the opposite kind of study: a shoot from scratch, with a phone, in fifteen minutes, on a kitchen table. We are going to take one ordinary object — a ceramic coffee mug — and compose it seven different ways, so you can watch each principle from Chapter 6 change the same subject in real time. This is the product on a table setup (one of the book's four recurring setups), and it is the single best rehearsal space for composition, because the subject holds perfectly still and lets you concentrate on nothing but the frame.

No studio, no lights bought, no crew. If you have a phone, a window, a table, a mug, and a sheet of white paper, you can shoot every frame in this case study alongside us. Do it as you read; the whole point is to feel each composition change under your own hands.

The brief and the constraints

The brief: produce a short set of "beauty" frames of a single ceramic mug for a fictional local café's website — the kind of clean, appealing product shots that make someone want the drink. We need frames that could headline a webpage, sit beside text, and work both horizontally (16:9, for the site) and vertically (9:16, for the café's social feed).

The constraints — deliberately tight, so the composition does the work:

  • One subject: a single mug (add a saucer, a spoon, or a few coffee beans as optional supporting props, nothing more).
  • One light: a window. No purchased lighting; a sheet of white paper or card as a bounce is allowed (the free path — we shape window light fully in Chapter 13).
  • One camera: a phone, with the rule-of-thirds grid turned on (§6.5 Gear Note).
  • Fifteen minutes. The clock forces you to decide rather than fiddle.

The value of the product setup for learning composition is exactly this stillness and control: the mug will not blink, move, or get self-conscious, so every change in the shot is a change you made to the frame. You are isolating the one variable this chapter is about.

Gear and settings

You need almost nothing. A phone braced against a stack of books (or on a cheap tripod), a window with soft daylight, a mug, and a white card. Here is the starting point — a place to begin, not a recipe. (These settings lean on Chapters 2–5; if any term is unfamiliar, it's defined there.)

Phone-only note: if your phone won't expose manually, tap-and-hold to lock exposure and focus on the mug, then recompose. Everything else here is composition, which your phone can't do for you — that's the point.

The setup: one window, one bounce

Before the seven frames, place the light and the subject once. We use a top-down map with the book's frozen symbols (stated here for this chapter): ( S ) = the subject/mug; [CAM] = camera; = the window/available light; = the bounce card (fill); arrows show the direction light travels toward the subject.

Read the map: the window is camera-left and rakes soft light across the mug, revealing its curved shape and lighting any steam; a white card on the camera-right bounces about a stop of light back into the shadow side so the mug keeps detail rather than falling to black. That's the entire lighting setup — we deliberately keep it fixed and simple, because the variable we are studying is the frame, not the light. Now we compose the same mug seven ways.

The shoot, frame by frame

Here is the working method for the next fifteen minutes, and it is worth stating because it is the method for all deliberate shooting, not just this exercise: change one variable at a time and watch what it does. We will hold the light, the lens, and the subject constant and change only the composition, one principle per frame. That isolation is what turns shooting into learning — when you change five things at once and the shot gets better, you've learned nothing, because you can't say which change did it. Professionals run experiments; the product table is your laboratory.

Frame 1 — the baseline (the beginner's snapshot)

We start by shooting it wrong on purpose, so the rest has something to beat. Phone up, mug in the middle, tap, done.

The result (Described Shot). THE FRAME: the mug sits dead-center and smallish, a ring of equal empty table on all four sides; the eye lands on it and then has nowhere to go. THE EFFECT: inert. It reads as "here is a mug," a catalog record, not a craving. THE LESSON: centering + equal dead space = a snapshot. This is the frame we're about to beat six times.

What we adjusted: nothing yet — this is the control. Keep it to compare against. The moment you put the next frame beside it, you will feel exactly what composition buys.

Frame 2 — the rule of thirds

Move the mug (or the camera) so the mug sits on a third, and let the handle direct the eye. This is §6.2's default, and it is an instant upgrade.

The result (Described Shot). THE FRAME: the mug sits on the lower-left third; its rim catches the window light on the upper-third line; the handle and the open mouth of the cup face right, into two-thirds of calm negative space. THE MOVE: locked off. THE LIGHT: window key camera-left, card fill right. THE EFFECT: suddenly the frame has a direction — the product "faces" the open space the way a person's gaze would, and the emptiness feels reserved, not wasted. THE LESSON: even an object has a "looking direction" (its opening, its handle, its label); place it on the third opposite that direction and give it room, exactly like nose room for a face.

What we adjusted: slid the mug off-center onto the left third and rotated it so the handle and opening face into the empty right side. One small move; the frame went from inert to poised.

Frame 3 — a leading line

Now use §6.3. Lay a spoon, a napkin edge, or the table's own seam so it runs toward the mug, and shoot low and along it so the line delivers the eye to the product.

The result (Described Shot). THE FRAME: the mug moves to the upper-right third; a spoon lies diagonally from the lower-left corner, its handle pointing up at the mug. Shot slightly low so the line has length. THE EFFECT: the eye enters at the bottom-left, rides the spoon straight up to the mug, and stops there — the composition escorts you to the product. THE LESSON: a humble prop becomes a leading line when you aim it at the subject; the diagonal also adds energy the flat frames lacked.

What we adjusted: introduced one prop purely as a line, lowered the camera to lengthen the diagonal, and re-placed the mug at the line's destination (the upper-right third). Note we moved the mug to the opposite third from Frame 2 so the line has room to travel.

Frame 4 — negative space

Push §6.4. Back off, let the mug sit small in a large, clean emptiness, and make the emptiness do something — here, calm and premium, plus a reserved zone for a headline.

The result (Described Shot). THE FRAME: the mug is small in the lower-right, surrounded by a wide sweep of soft, out-of-focus table and wall; the entire upper-left is clean, empty, and calm. THE EFFECT: the emptiness reads as calm, space, and premium quiet — and it is obviously waiting for a word. THE LESSON: negative space isolates and dignifies a small subject, and for a video/commercial shooter it is also where the headline lives. We composed the empty half in on purpose.

What we adjusted: backed the camera off so the mug got small, placed it low-right, and — crucially — kept the upper-left clean and free of clutter or hot spots so a headline will read there. This is composing for the graphic from §6.4, done at the moment of shooting, not discovered in the edit.

Frame 5 — depth and layers

Now §6.3's depth. Shoot through a foreground element at a wide aperture so the mug pops out of soft layers.

The result (Described Shot). THE FRAME: a few coffee beans sit close to the lens, thrown to soft blur; the mug is the sharp midground on a third; the window and wall dissolve to creamy softness behind. THE EFFECT: the flat table becomes a deep little world; the mug feels embedded in a real place and pops because it's the only crisp plane. THE LESSON: three planes at three distances + a wide aperture = depth on a kitchen table. "Shoot through something" is the fastest cure for a flat product shot.

What we adjusted: opened the aperture wide (or switched the phone to its portrait/cinematic mode), scattered a few beans right in front of the lens as a foreground layer, and focused on the mug so the front and back went soft. Same mug, same light — now three-dimensional.

An aside: the product's "face"

Before we change the frame's shape, one lesson specific to product work that applies everywhere composition lives. A product has an orientation you must compose around, the same way a person's face has a front. A mug's "face" is its handle and its opening (and, if it has one, its logo). Rotate the handle to the back and the mug looks anonymous and closed; rotate it a few degrees toward the open side of the frame and the mug suddenly "faces" its nose room, exactly like a person looking into space. If there's a logo, it wants to be readable but not dead-square to the lens — a slight angle keeps it legible while preserving the depth of §6.3. This is why product shooters spend real time turning the object a few degrees at a time between takes: they are composing the subject's face, and a five-degree rotation can be the difference between a flat record and an appealing shot. When you shoot your own object, budget a minute just to rotate it and watch its "face" turn toward and away from the open space. The principle transfers to anything with a front: a shoe, a book cover, a watch dial, a bottle label — find its face, and give that face room.

Frames 6 and 7 — reframing for vertical and cinemascope

Finally, §6.5. The website wants 16:9, but the café's social feed wants 9:16, and we want one dramatic 2.39:1 hero frame. Same mug, three shapes, three different framing problems.

   9:16 uses HEIGHT: stack the steam rising above the mug. 2.39:1 uses WIDTH: strand the mug in emptiness.

The results (Described Shots). 9:16: the mug sits low-center-left; the frame's height is used to show steam rising in a tall column above it — a vertical composition that would be impossible in 16:9. Composed knowing captions/buttons will crowd the bottom, so the mug and steam stay in the safe upper-middle. 2.39:1: the mug is stranded on the far-left third of a very wide letterbox, a long sweep of empty premium space to its right — editorial, dramatic, a headline waiting to fill the void.

What we adjusted: for 9:16 we turned the composition vertical and used the height for the rising steam (and kept the subject out of the unsafe bottom edge where a caption bar will sit); for 2.39:1 we cropped wide and pushed the mug hard to one side to exploit the width. Three shapes, three genuinely different frames — proof of §6.5's claim that ratio is a composition decision.

The edit pass

We have seven frames (well, six keepers — Frame 1 was a sacrifice). The deliverable is a short 10-second product sequence for the website header, cutting through the strongest compositions to a final frame that holds negative space for the café's name. Editing is Part VI's subject, but the composition decisions we made on set are what make this edit possible at all.

Read the cut logic, and notice every choice traces back to composition. We open on the layered, shallow-focus frame (Frame 5) because depth grabs the eye and says "premium." We cut to the clean thirds frame (Frame 2) to let the product settle and be read. We cut to the leading-line frame (Frame 3) because the diagonal adds energy and momentum mid-sequence. And we land on the negative-space frame (Frame 4), holding it twice as long, because that reserved empty upper-left is exactly where the café's name now drops in — the title has a home because we composed one for it on set. That is the entire thesis of "you shoot for the edit," proven in ten seconds: the edit was easy because the frames were composed for it.

The one cut that teaches the most: the hold on the final negative-space frame. In a lesser shoot, every frame would be filled edge-to-edge, and the editor would have to shove the café's name over the mug or onto a busy background where it can't be read. Because we reserved clean space while shooting, the title lands in calm emptiness and reads instantly. The composition decision (leave negative space) and the edit decision (hold for the title) are the same decision, made in two rooms.

Notice one more thing the composition bought us in the edit: because we shot everything at 4K (see the Settings Box), the editor can reframe within the frame — nudging the mug onto a cleaner third, or punching in slightly for a match — and still deliver a crisp 1080p sequence. That headroom to recompose in post is a direct consequence of a capture decision (resolution) meeting a composition decision (leave a little room). It is not a license to be sloppy on set — a badly composed 4K frame is still badly composed — but it is a safety margin the deliberate shooter earns and the careless one wastes. And the vertical (9:16) and cinemascope (2.39:1) versions we composed on the shoot mean the café gets its website header, its social post, and a dramatic hero image from one fifteen-minute session with a mug — three deliverables, because we thought about the shape of the frame before we pressed record, not after.

Discussion questions

  1. Frame 1 (centered snapshot) and Frame 2 (rule of thirds) are the same mug in the same light. In your own words, what exactly changed to make Frame 2 better — and why did such a small move matter so much?
  2. We said even a mug has a "looking direction" (its handle and opening). What is the "looking direction" of three other products — a shoe, a watch, a book — and which third would you place each on?
  3. The leading-line frame used a spoon purely as a line. Find three household objects that could serve as a leading line into a product. Does the line have to be a straight object, or can it be an edge, a shadow, or a row of things?
  4. We reserved negative space for the café's name on the shoot, not in the edit. Why is that better than "we'll find room for text later"? What does it cost you if you don't?

  6. We deliberately shot Frame 1 "wrong." Why is shooting a bad version on purpose a useful habit, not a waste of time?

Your turn: your own seven frames

Repeat this shoot-along with a product of your own — a shoe, a plant, a tool, a slice of cake, a bottle. Same constraints: one subject, one window (plus a white-card bounce), a phone with the grid on, fifteen minutes.

Shoot the same seven frames: (1) the centered baseline (on purpose), (2) rule of thirds with the product's "looking direction" given room, (3) a leading line into it, (4) isolation in negative space with a reserved zone for text, (5) depth with a soft foreground layer, and (6–7) reframes for 9:16 and 2.39:1. Then cut a 10-second sequence that opens on depth and lands on the negative-space frame with a title.

The self-review question: lay Frame 1 next to Frame 4 and show both to someone who wasn't there. Ask which one they'd click on. Their answer is the whole argument of Chapter 6 — same subject, same gear, same light, and the only variable was the frame.
