Chapter 25 — Further Reading

Specialty capture is a place where the law and the craft both matter, so this list has an unusual first section: before anything else, if you intend to fly, read your regulator. After that, the resources below deepen the craft of aerial, timelapse, slow motion, and immersive capture. All are real, verifiable sources or categories; nothing here is invented. Annotations say what each is good for and which learning path it serves most.


Read this first — if you will fly a drone

Your own national civil-aviation authority. (The single most important "reading" in this chapter.) The rules that apply to you live only here, and they change often — no book, video, or forum is a substitute. Find your country's authority, read its current drone rules, and use its official airspace map or app before every flight. Examples of national authorities (for illustration only — find yours): the FAA (United States), EASA (European Union), the CAA (United Kingdom), CASA (Australia), and Transport Canada. Your drone manufacturer's official safety and tutorial materials. Reputable drone makers publish flight-safety guides, firmware-based geofencing information, and beginner tutorials specific to your aircraft. Foundational books

Steven Ascher & Edward Pincus — The Filmmaker's Handbook. The comprehensive, regularly-updated production reference this whole book leans on. Its chapters on frame rate, shutter, and specialized shooting are the best single written source for understanding why high-frame-rate and time-lapse capture behave as they do, tied to the exposure and sensor fundamentals of Parts I and III. Read the frame-rate and camera sections alongside §25.3–25.4. Serves: all paths; 🎓 Student and 💼 Pro-track most.

Blain Brown — Cinematography: Theory and Practice. A cinematographer's-eye treatment of the image, strong on exposure control, filtration (including the ND filters that make daytime aerials and timelapses possible), and the motivated use of camera movement. Excellent for turning "I got a drone shot" into "I composed and exposed a deliberate aerial." Serves: 🎥 Creator, 💼 Pro-track.

Walter Murch — In the Blink of an Eye. Not about specialty capture at all — about editing — which is exactly why it belongs here. Murch's argument that a cut must be motivated is the discipline of §25.6 in its purest form: a slow-motion beat or a timelapse only works if the edit has a reason for it. Short, wise, essential; we return to it in Chapter 29. Serves: all paths.

Roy Thompson & Christopher J. Bowen — Grammar of the Shot. A compact, practical guide to what each individual shot does and how shots combine into meaning. It's the perfect companion to §25.6's master test: you can only judge whether a specialty shot "has a job" if you know what jobs shots do, and this book is a clear catalogue of exactly that. Films & sequences to study

Watch these the way this chapter taught you to — writing a Described Shot for the specialty passages, and asking of each: what storytelling question does this answer?

Ron Fricke's time-manipulation films — Koyaanisqatsi (1982, dir. Godfrey Reggio, photographed by Fricke), Chronos (1985), Baraka (1992), Samsara (2011). The canon of specialty capture as language. Start with Koyaanisqatsi (this chapter's Case Study 1) for timelapse-and-slow-motion-as-argument; then Baraka and Samsara for the most beautiful large-format timelapse cinematography ever made, and a masterclass in the contrast engine (fast time vs. slow time, machine vs. human). The opening of The Shining (1980, dir. Stanley Kubrick). The definitive aerial establishing sequence: a helicopter follows a tiny car up a mountain road toward the isolated hotel, and by the time the titles end you understand the film's entire geography and dread — pure §25.1, executed before drones existed. BBC natural-history series — Planet Earth (2006) and Planet Earth II (2016), and their peers. The most sustained showcase of all the chapter's techniques in service of story: aerials that establish scale, high-speed slow motion that reveals a hunt too fast to see, and timelapses of seasons and tides. Watch a single sequence and count how the three techniques hand off to one another. Their "making of" featurettes are superb on the patience and light that specialty capture demands. Any well-regarded modern film or ad with a single, motivated drone reveal. Rather than a montage of drone shots, find a piece that uses one aerial to open or to reset scale, and study why that one is enough. This trains the restraint of §25.6 better than any highlight reel. Live sports broadcasts — the world's best free school for slow motion. A major televised sport is a continuous masterclass in why and when to slow down: the replay isolates the decisive instant, reveals what was too fast to judge live, and cuts back to real time. Watch how broadcasters choose which moment earns the slow-motion treatment and how briefly they hold it — the emphasis discipline of §25.4, demonstrated hundreds of times a game. Free online, channels, and manufacturer resources

Established cinematography and filmmaking education channels (video). The open web has excellent free instruction on timelapse intervals, hyperlapse technique, slow-motion lighting, and drone cinematography. Favor channels run by working cinematographers and educators over gear-review channels: you want why the interval is two seconds, not which drone to buy this year. Your phone's own camera documentation. Underrated and free: the official guides for your phone's timelapse, hyperlapse, and slow-motion modes tell you exactly which frame rates and resolutions it offers and any quality trade-offs at the highest rates (§25.4). Since this is an any-gear chapter and the phone is the reference tool, this is genuinely primary reading. Serves: 📱 Phone-first.

Reputable community forums for drone pilots and timelapse shooters. Good for the craft questions (how to nail a holy-grail sunset ramp; how to keep a hyperlapse from warping) and for local, on-the-ground knowledge of flying spots. Tools & apps

Your NLE's frame-rate "conform"/retime feature (DaVinci Resolve — the book's reference). This is how you turn high-frame-rate footage into slow motion with full quality: interpret or retime a 120 fps clip to your 24 fps timeline (§25.4's 🔬 Tech box). Learning the difference between conforming real captured frames and software-invented frames (optical flow) is worth an afternoon. Serves: all paths; 💼 Pro-track.

Dedicated timelapse/hyperlapse apps and intervalometer tools. For phones and cameras that lack a robust built-in interval mode, third-party apps add interval control, exposure ramping (for the holy-grail day-to-night lapse), and hyperlapse stabilization. 360 stitching and "overcapture" reframing tools. If you explore 360 (§25.5), the manufacturer's own app is usually the fastest path to reframing a flat shot out of the sphere — the one 360 use most working producers actually reach for. Your phone's exposure/focus lock (AE/AF lock) — the free "tool" that saves every timelapse. The single most important control for the entire time-lapse half of this chapter is the tap-and-hold that locks exposure and focus so they can't drift frame to frame (§25.3; Case Study 2 lost a timelapse for want of it). Learn where it lives in your camera app and how to confirm it's engaged — it costs nothing and prevents the flicker and hunt that no edit can fully repair.   1. If you'll fly: your regulator + your drone maker's safety materials — first, always.

  4. A Planet Earth sequence, counting the hand-offs between aerial, slow-mo, and timelapse.

Read little, shoot much. The most valuable "further reading" for this chapter is a locked-down phone quietly shooting a twenty-minute timelapse while you go make something else — and, if you fly, the current page of your civil-aviation authority open on your screen before you ever leave the ground.
