Chapter 4: Lenses

Overview

Take the most expensive cinema camera ever built and bolt a cheap, scratched lens to the front of it, and you will get a soft, muddy, characterless image. Take a modest camera — or the phone in your pocket — and put a good piece of glass in front of it, and the picture snaps into life. This is the fact the whole camera-buying world would rather you not think about too hard: the lens shapes the image more than the camera body does. The body is the box that records. The lens is the eye that sees. And the eye is where the looking happens.

But this chapter is not really about sharpness or glass quality, because that is the least interesting thing a lens does. The interesting thing is that a lens is a storyteller. When you choose a focal length, you are not choosing a zoom level — you are choosing how close the viewer feels to the subject, how much of the world crowds in around them, whether space feels deep and open or flat and pressing, and whether we are standing inside the scene or watching it from across the street. When you choose an aperture, you are deciding what the viewer is allowed to look at, by making everything else melt away. These are not technical decisions. They are the same kind of decision as where to point the camera or when to cut: decisions about what the video is saying and how the audience should feel.

Here is the promise of this chapter, and it is a big one for anyone who has ever felt held back by their gear: almost everything that makes an image look "cinematic" — the way a face lifts off a soft, glowing background, the way a long street stacks up into a wall of light, the way a room wraps around a subject and pulls you in — is a lens decision, and you can learn to make it on purpose today, with whatever camera is in your hand. A phone shooter who understands focal length and depth of field will out-shoot someone with a bag of expensive lenses who is treating them all as "zoom."

We begin, as always, not with the numbers but with what the audience feels — and then we will earn the numbers.

In this chapter you will learn to:

  • Read a focal length in millimetres and describe the story that wide, normal, and telephoto lenses each tend to tell.
  • Separate two ideas beginners fatally confuse: perspective (how deep or compressed space looks, set by where you stand) and angle of view (how much fits in the frame, set by the lens).
  • Read an f-stop and understand the two jobs one aperture does at once — control light, and control focus.
  • Command depth of field and bokeh to send the viewer's eye exactly where the story wants it.
  • Get deliberate, cinematic results from a prime, a zoom, or a phone's fixed lenses — and hold and pull focus cleanly for video.

4.1 Focal length: wide, normal, telephoto, and what each says

Watch two videos of the same person walking down the same street. In the first, the buildings loom huge and close behind them, the whole background stacked up like a painted flat, the person and the far-off traffic all pressed into one shallow plane — it feels tense, watched, cinematic. In the second, the street yawns open and deep, the walls fan away to the sides, and you feel like you are walking with the person, right there beside them. Same street, same person, same light. What changed was the lens — and, crucially, where the camera stood to use it.

Let us name the thing. Focal length is the property of a lens, measured in millimetres, that determines how much of the scene it takes in and how large distant objects appear — in short, how "wide" or "zoomed-in" the lens is. A small number (say 16mm) is a wide lens: it takes in a broad angle of the world and makes everything look small and far. A large number (say 200mm) is a telephoto or "long" lens: it takes in a narrow slice and magnifies it, pulling distant things close. In between sits the normal range, around 50mm, which sees roughly the way your own eye does.

One immediate wrinkle you already met in Chapter 2: the same focal length looks wider or tighter depending on the size of the sensor behind it. A 50mm lens frames like a "normal" lens on a full-frame camera, but like a short telephoto on a smaller sensor, and a phone's actual ~5mm lens frames wide because its sensor is tiny.

🔗 Connection. This is the crop factor from Chapter 2 (§2.5) doing its work. Because a bare millimetre number means different things on different cameras, this book quotes focal lengths as full-frame-equivalent — the framing you would get from that number on a full-frame sensor — whenever sensor size matters. When we say a "35mm-equivalent" lens, we mean however many real millimetres your camera needs to frame like a 35mm does on full-frame. Your phone's "main" camera is usually around a 24–28mm-equivalent; its portrait lens around 50–77mm-equivalent. Match the equivalent, not the raw number.

What each range says

Focal length is a storytelling choice because each range carries a feeling. Learn these as emotional defaults, not laws:

  • Ultra-wide (~12–20mm-equiv): immersion and exaggeration. Space stretches; near things loom and far things shrink; you feel inside the scene, sometimes uncomfortably. Great for cramped interiors, action from within, environments that should feel vast. Murder on a face up close, though — noses and foreheads balloon.
  • Wide (~24–35mm-equiv): context and energy. Enough room to show a person and their world, with a subjective, you-are-here immediacy. This is the vlog-at-arm's-length lens, the walk-and-talk lens, the run-and-gun documentary lens.
  • Normal (~40–58mm-equiv): honesty and neutrality. Close to how the eye perceives space, so it reads as plain truth — no exaggeration, no distance. The classic 50mm "nifty fifty" lives here. When you want the viewer to simply believe what they see, this is home.
  • Short telephoto / "portrait" (~85–135mm-equiv): flattery and intimacy. Compresses features pleasingly, separates the subject from the background with ease, and says look at this person while quietly pushing the world away. The default interview and portrait range.
  • Telephoto and longer (~135mm-equiv and up): observation and isolation. Strong compression stacks the background into a wall; the subject floats, watched from a distance. It can feel voyeuristic, tense, lonely, or grand. Sports, wildlife, and any moment that should feel observed rather than shared.

💡 Why It Works: the lens sets the viewer's relationship to the subject. A wide lens puts the viewer in the scene — near, involved, subjective. A long lens puts the viewer outside it — distant, watching, objective. That is why a lonely character is so often shot long (we watch them from across the void) and a frantic chase is so often shot wide (we are thrown into it). Pick the focal length that matches the emotional distance you want between your audience and your subject, and the lens will do half your directing for you.

The idea that fixes everything: perspective is distance, not lens

Here is the single most important — and most misunderstood — fact about focal length, and once it clicks, you will never think about lenses the naïve way again.

The lens does not create perspective. Your feet do. How big the background looks relative to the subject, how deep or compressed space appears, whether faces look flattering or distorted — all of that is set by camera-to-subject distance, not by the focal length. The lens only changes how much of the scene fits into the frame (its angle of view). What actually happens on a real shoot is this: you decide how big you want the subject in the frame, and then the focal length dictates how far away you must stand to get that size. A wide lens forces you close; a long lens lets you stand far back. And it is that closeness or farness — the standing position — that stretches or compresses the world.

  The subject is the SAME SIZE in both frames. In A, standing close, the walls fan out
  behind and beside the subject: the room reads deep, open, and roomy. In B, standing far,
  the narrow lens magnifies the far wall and drags it forward until it looms right behind
  the subject: space reads flat and compressed. The lens didn't change the subject —
  moving the camera to use that lens changed the whole world behind them.

Read the diagram slowly, because it contains the entire secret of focal length. In panel A you walked up to the subject to fill the frame with a wide lens, and from that close vantage the background falls away — deep, three-dimensional, spacious. In panel B you backed across the room and used a long lens to fill the frame with the same subject, and from that distant vantage the far wall is magnified and appears to sit right behind them — compressed, flat, poster-like. This "compression" is the famous cinematic look of long lenses, and now you know its real cause: not the glass, but the distance the glass let you shoot from.

🚪 Threshold Concept: focal length is really a distance decision. When a cinematographer says "let's go longer," they are not saying "zoom in." They are saying "I want to stand farther away, which will flatten and stack the background and isolate the subject." When they say "let's go wider," they mean "I want to get closer, which will open up the space and pull the viewer in." Choosing a focal length is choosing where you stand and therefore how the world behind your subject behaves. Internalize this and you stop treating lenses as magnification and start treating them as staging.

⚠️ Common Mistake: "zooming in" instead of walking. The beginner sees a subject too small in the frame and zooms the lens (or, worse, pinch-zooms the phone) to make it bigger. That changes the framing but leaves the perspective of your standing spot — and on a phone's digital zoom, it also throws away resolution and turns the image to mush. The fix: decide the feeling first. Want intimacy and open space? Get a wider lens and physically walk in. Want compression and isolation? Get a longer lens and physically back up. Move your feet, then choose glass to match — don't let the zoom ring make your staging decisions for you.

🔗 Connection. Notice that "how big the subject is in the frame" is a different question from focal length — you can make a tight, face-filling shot with a wide lens up close or a long lens far back, and they will look completely different. That framing question — wide shot, medium, close-up as a deliberate system — is the shot-size language of Chapter 7 (§7.1). Focal length is how you achieve a given size and what the background does while you do; shot size is which size you chose and why. Keep them separate in your head.

🎞️ Read This Sequence. Here is the long lens doing its signature work — turning ordinary distance into meaning.

  THE FRAME    A person stands still on a busy sidewalk while the crowd streams past. Shot on a long
               lens (~135mm-equiv) from far down the block: the traffic, the shop signs, and the far
               intersection are all magnified and stacked into a compressed wall of moving colour behind
               them. The subject is sharp; the crowd is a soft river.
  THE MOVE     Locked off on a tripod, far away. The stillness of the camera against the streaming crowd
               is the whole point — everything moves except the one person we care about.
  THE LIGHT    Flat, even, overcast city light; no need to shape it, the compression is doing the drama.
  THE SOUND    City ambience — traffic, footsteps, a snatch of conversation swallowed by the crowd. The
               sound is as anonymous and dense as the packed background looks.
  THE CUT      Cuts in from a wide establishing shot of the street; we go from "a city" to "one person
               inside it," and hold long because the stillness needs time to register.
  THE EFFECT   The compression presses the whole city up against the subject, so they read as *surrounded
               yet alone* — an island of stillness the camera watches from a distance it never closes.
  THE LESSON   A long lens shot from far away doesn't just make things bigger; it flattens space into
               emotion. "Alone in a crowd" is a lens choice before it is a script line.

🎬 On Set: walk the focal lengths. Put one subject — a friend, a mug, yourself — in front of a background that has some depth to it (a hallway, a street, a row of trees). Frame the subject the same size four times: once as wide as you can get while filling the frame (walking in close), once around normal, once at a short telephoto, once as long as your gear allows (backing far away). Phone-only: use the ultra-wide, main, and telephoto cameras and your feet. Watch all four back to back. Constraint: keep the subject the same size every time, so the only thing changing is the background. Self-review question: in one sentence each, what did the background do, and which version feels most "cinematic" to you — and why? This is the single most clarifying exercise in the chapter.

🔄 Check Your Eye. From memory: 1. You want a subject to feel isolated and watched. Wide lens up close, or long lens far back — and what does the background do? 2. True or false: a longer lens creates the compressed look. Correct the statement if it's false. 3. Two shooters both want a face-filling close-up. One uses a wide lens up close, one a long lens far back. Will the shots look the same? Why not?

  1. Long lens, far back — the distance compresses and stacks the background into a wall behind them, isolating the subject; the long lens is just what lets you fill the frame from that distance.
  2. False. The lens doesn't create compression; camera-to-subject distance does. A long lens compresses only because it lets you shoot from far away — the far vantage is the cause.
  3. No. Same subject size, opposite feel: the wide-close version has an open, deep background and mild face distortion (immersive); the long-far version has a compressed, stacked background and a flattered face (observational). Shot size is not focal length.

4.2 Aperture and the f-stop: light and depth together

Inside almost every lens sits a ring of overlapping blades that open and close to form a hole of adjustable size — an iris, exactly like the one in your own eye. That hole is the aperture: the adjustable opening in a lens that controls how much light passes through to the sensor, and, at the same time, how much of the scene is in sharp focus. One control, two jobs. That double duty is why aperture is one of the most powerful storytelling tools on the camera, and why understanding it is worth every minute you spend here.

The size of that opening is measured in f-stops (written f/2.8, f/8, and so on): a number expressing the aperture size as a ratio of the lens's focal length to the width of the opening — where, confusingly but importantly, a smaller number means a bigger hole and more light. So f/1.8 is a wide-open aperture drinking in light; f/16 is a tiny pinhole letting little through. Beginners trip on this every time, so burn it in now: small f-number, big opening, lots of light; big f-number, small opening, little light. The reason the scale runs "backwards" is that it is a fraction — and we will not belabour the math, because you steer by the effect, not the arithmetic.

   Each labelled step is one "stop": it lets in HALF the light of the step to its left.
   (That halving — "a stop" — is the unit the whole exposure system runs on. Chapter 5
   makes it the centre of getting a correct picture. Here we care about the OTHER thing
   this same ring controls: how much of the shot is in focus.)

Notice the two arrows that matter to us right now. As you open the aperture (move left, toward f/1.4), two things happen together: more light floods in, and the zone of sharp focus gets thinner. As you close it down (move right, toward f/16), less light comes in and more of the scene snaps into focus. These two effects are welded together — you cannot change one without changing the other — and learning to want them at the same time is the art of the aperture.

🔗 Connection. The light half of the aperture's job — how a wider opening lets you shoot in a darker room, and how you balance it against the other controls to get a correct, clean exposure — belongs to the exposure system, which is Chapter 5 (§5.1). There you will meet ISO, the ND filter, and the "exposure triangle," and you will learn to read exposure with scopes instead of guessing with your eye. For this chapter, hold just one fact from the light side: a wider aperture (smaller f-number) gathers more light, which is why "fast" lenses that open to f/1.8 or wider are prized for dim rooms. Everything else about exposure, we defer. Our business here is the other thing the same ring controls: depth of field.

🎒 Gear Note: what "a fast lens" buys you, and when you need it. A lens that opens to a small f-number — f/1.8, f/1.4 — is called "fast," because it lets you keep shooting as the light drops and it can throw a background far out of focus. That is genuinely useful in two situations: dim locations, and shots where you want strong subject separation. It is not a general "better" — stopped down to f/5.6, a cheap fast large lens and an expensive one look nearly identical, and wide open, fast lenses are harder to keep in focus (more on that in §4.5). The phone path: your phone can't physically change its aperture, but its "portrait mode" simulates a wide-open look in software (§4.4). The cheapest real-glass upgrade in photography is the classic 50mm f/1.8 "nifty fifty" prime — a small, inexpensive lens that opens wide and renders beautifully, and the single best first purchase for a reader who wants the interchangeable-lens look.

  1. f/2 — smaller f-number means a bigger opening and more light. (f/11 is a small pinhole letting little through.)
  2. It gets thinner — less of the scene is in focus. Opening up (toward small f-numbers) always shrinks the zone of sharpness.
  3. Chapter 5, the exposure chapter. Here we only use aperture's other job — controlling focus/depth of field.

4.3 Depth of field and bokeh: directing the eye with focus

Now to the reason the aperture is a storytelling tool and not just a light valve. Depth of field is the distance range, front to back, in which the image looks acceptably sharp — the "zone of focus" around whatever you focused on. A shallow depth of field is a thin zone: your subject is razor-sharp and everything closer or farther melts into a soft blur. A deep depth of field is a thick zone: near, middle, and far are all in focus together. Neither is better. Each says something different.

  Three dials make the focus zone THINNER (more background separation):
     1. OPEN the aperture (smaller f-number: f/8 -> f/1.8)
     2. Use a LONGER focal length (35mm -> 135mm)
     3. Get the subject CLOSER to the camera (and farther from the background)

The diagram gives you the three levers, and they stack — use all three and you get a wafer-thin plane of focus; reverse all three and everything is sharp from your shoes to the horizon. In practice you reach for shallow depth of field when you want to isolate — an interview subject lifted cleanly off a distracting room, a product glowing against a soft wash of colour, a face that is the only thing in the universe that matters for this beat. You reach for deep depth of field when context matters and you cannot afford to miss focus — a wide landscape where the near rock and the far mountain both count, a busy scene where the action could happen anywhere in the frame, a run-and-gun moment where you have no time to pull focus precisely.

The soft, melty quality of those out-of-focus areas has a name worth knowing. Bokeh (from the Japanese for "blur" or "haze") is the aesthetic character of the out-of-focus parts of an image — not just that the background is blurred, but how it blurs: whether points of light become creamy round orbs or busy, edgy shapes, whether the falloff is smooth or nervous. Good bokeh is why a string of streetlights behind a subject becomes a curtain of glowing circles rather than a jumble of bright dots. It is a big part of what people mean, without knowing the word, when they call an image "cinematic."

💡 Why It Works: shallow focus is the cheapest way to direct the eye. The viewer's eye is helplessly drawn to whatever is sharp in a soft frame. That means depth of field is a pointing tool: throw the background out of focus and you have physically forced the audience to look where you want, and to stop noticing the messy room, the ugly sign, the boom in the corner. This is composition by subtraction — instead of arranging everything in the frame perfectly, you simply erase everything you don't want the eye to visit. On a low budget in an imperfect location, a shallow depth of field is often the single most powerful "production value" you can buy, and it costs nothing but an open aperture and a step closer.

🎞️ Read This Sequence. Here is depth of field doing the directing on our recurring talking-head setup — the interview at a table that we return to all through the book.

  THE CUT      Holds on the answer, then cuts to B-roll of what they're describing. Because the background
               is anonymous, the editor can cut to almost anything without a jarring location mismatch.
  THE EFFECT   The eye has nowhere to go but the eyes. The soft, glowing background reads as expensive and
               intentional even though the actual room is an ordinary office.
  THE LESSON   Shallow depth of field turns a cluttered, ordinary location into a clean, premium frame — by
               erasing everything except the person. It is the interview look, and it is a lens decision.

⚠️ Common Mistake: shooting everything wide open. Beginners discover shallow depth of field, fall in love, and shoot every shot at f/1.8 because "blurry background = professional." Two problems. First, at the widest apertures the zone of focus can be so thin that a subject's eyes are sharp but the tip of their nose and their ears are soft, and any small movement — theirs or yours — drifts them out of focus entirely. Second, sometimes the background matters — the location, the context, the other person — and blurring it away throws out story. Shallow focus is a choice, not a default. Stop down to f/4 or f/5.6 when you need a little more margin for focus or a little more of the world; save the wide-open look for when isolation is genuinely the point.

✂️ In the Edit: depth of field is a decision you can't take back. This is where the shoot meets the timeline, so mark it. Once you have shot a background into a soft blur, the editor cannot bring it back into focus — that information is simply not in the file. And once you have missed focus — the eyes soft, the ear sharp — no amount of sharpening in post will rescue it; sharpening a soft shot just makes crunchy mush. The reverse is also true: a shot with deep focus can't be selectively blurred later without fiddly, imperfect effects work. So decide depth of field on set, deliberately, per shot — because unlike colour or sound, focus is one of the few things the edit genuinely cannot fix. When in doubt on a critical shot, stop down a touch for insurance; a slightly-too-deep shot is usable, a soft-eyed one is not.

♿ Accessibility & Inclusion: keep the story-critical thing sharp. Depth of field directs the eye, which is exactly why you must aim it responsibly. If a viewer relies on lip-reading, the mouth must be in the sharp zone — a shallow focus that softens the lips shuts them out. If your subject is signing, their hands and face both need to be in focus; a background-melting f/1.4 that also softens a moving hand defeats the communication. And if on-screen text or a demonstrated detail carries meaning, make sure it lands inside the depth of field, not in the blur. Directing the eye is a privilege; make sure the thing you sharpen is the thing everyone needs to see.

  1. Open the aperture (smaller f-number), use a longer focal length, and get the subject closer to the lens (and farther from the background). All three stack.
  2. The character — how the out-of-focus areas render (creamy vs. busy, round vs. edgy). That the background is blurred is depth of field; how it's blurred is bokeh.
  3. Because instead of arranging the whole frame, you erase everything you don't want the eye to visit by throwing it out of focus — you subtract distractions rather than add order.

4.4 Prime vs zoom; the phone's lenses

Lenses come in two families, and the difference shapes how you work. A prime lens is a lens with a single fixed focal length — a 35mm prime is only 35mm; to change your framing you move your feet. A zoom lens covers a range of focal lengths in one barrel — a 24–70mm zoom is every focal length from 24 to 70, chosen with a twist of the ring. That is the whole distinction, and each family trades away something real.

Primes tend to be optically simpler, so they are often sharper, open to wider apertures (that f/1.4 glass is almost always a prime), lighter, and cheaper at a given quality. Their "limitation" — one focal length — is secretly a teacher: a prime forces you to move, to commit to a perspective, to see a scene at one honest focal length instead of lazily zooming to whatever crops nicely. Many shooters get better faster on a single 35mm or 50mm prime than on any zoom, precisely because it makes them use their feet and decide.

Zooms buy you speed and flexibility. On a run-and-gun shoot, an event, a wildlife hide, or any situation where you cannot walk closer, a zoom lets you reframe instantly and hit a dozen focal lengths without changing glass. The trade is that zooms are usually heavier, optically more complex, and "slower" (they rarely open past f/2.8, and cheap ones only to f/5.6 at the long end). For a lot of professional work the flexibility wins; for a lot of beautiful work the prime's speed and simplicity win. Most working shooters own some of each.

⚠️ Common Mistake: zooming during the shot as a substitute for a move. A zoom lens tempts you to push the ring while recording, and a slow zoom-in almost always looks cheap and "home-video," because the eye reads it as magnification, not motion — the perspective never changes, so it feels flat and artificial. A physical push-in (moving the whole camera toward the subject) looks alive because the perspective shifts as you move, exactly the way it does when you walk toward something. Use the zoom to set your focal length between takes; if you want the camera to move within a shot, move the camera. (The motivated camera move — including when a zoom is the right call — is Chapter 8, §8.3.)

The phone's lenses — and its clever fake

If your camera is a phone, you are not stuck with one lens — you have two or three real ones, and it pays enormously to know which is which. A modern smartphone typically carries:

   In between the marked lenses, the phone "zooms" DIGITALLY — it crops and enlarges
   the main sensor's image, throwing away detail. Treat the named lenses as your primes;
   avoid the smeary in-between digital-zoom values.

Three practical rules follow from that diagram. First, the main "1x" lens is almost always the best one — the biggest sensor, the sharpest optics, the best low-light — so make it your default and only leave it for a reason. Second, the marked lenses are real; the values between them are usually fake — a "3.5x" that sits between the main and telephoto is often the main sensor cropped and enlarged (digital zoom), which is just throwing away resolution. Prefer the actual lenses. Third, the ultra-wide is a specialist — glorious for cramped rooms, sweeping establishers, and arm's-length vlogging, but it distorts faces up close and softens toward the edges, so use it on purpose, not by accident.

And then there is the fake, which is genuinely useful if you know it's a fake. A phone's "portrait mode" does not have a fast lens throwing the background out of focus — its tiny sensor and short actual focal length give it naturally deep focus. Instead it computes the blur: software identifies the subject, estimates distance, and paints a synthetic shallow depth of field behind them. It can look excellent, and for a talking-head it is a real tool. But it fails at edges — wispy hair, glasses, a coffee mug held out — because the software guesses where the subject stops, and it sometimes blurs the wrong thing. Use it, watch its edges, and when it matters, get real separation the honest way: move the subject far from the background and get close to them with the main or telephoto lens, and even a phone's real optics will give you some genuine falloff.

🎒 Gear Note: you do not need a bag of lenses. The gear industry would love to sell you seven primes. You need, at most, a way to be wide and a way to be long, and for a very long time a single versatile lens — or a single phone with its two or three built-ins — is plenty. If you shoot interchangeable-lens, a common, cheap, transformative starter kit is exactly two pieces of glass: one wide-to-normal zoom for flexibility, and one fast 50mm-equivalent prime for the shallow, low-light, "cinematic" look. That covers the overwhelming majority of everything in this book. Buy lenses to solve problems you have actually hit, not looks you have seen. The best lens is the one that gets you the shot the story needs, and you already own one.

  1. A prime is one fixed focal length (you move your feet); a zoom covers a range (twist the ring). A prime is usually sharper, faster, and lighter; a zoom is more flexible for fast reframing when you can't move.
  2. Because between the real lenses the phone digitally zooms — cropping and enlarging the main sensor's image and throwing away resolution, so it looks soft. Stick to the actual named lenses.
  3. No — portrait mode computes the blur in software rather than creating it optically (the phone's small sensor gives naturally deep focus). It fails at edges: wispy hair, glasses, a held-out object, where the software guesses wrong about where the subject ends.

4.5 Focus for video: pulling focus, focus aids

In photography, focus is a moment: you nail it, you press the shutter, it's over. In video, focus is a performance — it has to stay right for the whole length of the shot, and sometimes it has to change mid-shot, deliberately, as a storytelling move. That live, ongoing act of setting and changing focus is where a lot of otherwise-good footage quietly dies, and where a small amount of skill makes you look far more professional than your gear.

A focus pull (also called a rack focus) is the act of changing focus during a shot — shifting the sharp plane from one subject to another while the camera rolls, so the viewer's eye is led from the first to the second. It is one of the most elegant tools in the language: focus racks from a person in the foreground to a figure appearing in a doorway behind them, and the audience's attention is physically carried across the frame without a single cut. On a film set this is so important it is a dedicated job — the first assistant camera, or "focus puller," whose entire craft is keeping focus perfect and executing pulls on marks.

               and we *discover* the second person the way we would in life — by looking over at a voice.
  THE LESSON   A focus pull is a cut you don't have to make. It leads the eye within the frame, and it only
               exists because the shallow depth of field made "sharp" a place the audience is forced to look.

The trouble is that video focus is hard, especially at the wide apertures that give you that shallow look — the thinner the depth of field, the less room for error, and a face drifting a few centimetres can go soft. You have two broad approaches, and good shooters use both:

  • Autofocus has become genuinely excellent on modern cameras and phones — especially face- and eye-detection, which locks onto a subject's eye and holds it as they move. For a solo shooter, a talking-head, or run-and-gun where you cannot ride focus by hand, reliable eye-detect autofocus is a gift; use it without shame. Its risks: it can "hunt" (drift in and out searching) in low light or low contrast, and it can jump to the wrong subject when something crosses the frame. Test it before the take that matters.
  • Manual focus gives you total control and is essential for deliberate pulls, for tricky scenes autofocus can't parse, and for a look you want to author rather than let the camera guess at. The cost is that you must hold it — which is where focus aids come in.

Every serious video camera and most phones give you tools to nail manual focus, and you should turn them on:

  • Focus peaking paints a bright coloured outline (often red, green, or yellow) over the edges of whatever is in sharp focus, so you can see the plane of focus land on your subject's eyes. This is the single most useful focus aid; learn where your camera hides it and leave it on.
  • Punch-in / magnification temporarily zooms the display (not the recording) way in, so you can confirm critical sharpness — a subject's eyelashes, the label on a product — before you roll. Standard practice on any locked-off shot that must be tack-sharp.
  • Marks. For a planned focus pull, set focus on the first subject and note the lens position, then on the second, and rehearse travelling between the two marks smoothly. On dedicated lenses, physical distance markings and follow-focus wheels make this repeatable; even by hand, rehearsing the two end points is what makes a pull land instead of lurch.

⚠️ Common Mistake: trusting autofocus on the one take you can't reshoot. Autofocus is superb until the moment it isn't — it hunts as a cloud dims the room, or racks to the passing waiter instead of your subject, right in the middle of the perfect answer. On any shot that truly matters and cannot be repeated, either lock focus manually (if your subject stays put) or watch the focus like a hawk on a take you're prepared to redo. The professional habit: on a critical static shot, set focus manually with peaking and punch-in, confirm it, then stop touching it. Let autofocus help you, never let it be the only thing standing between you and a usable take.

🎬 On Set: pull a focus. Set up two objects (or two people) — one about a metre from the camera, one two or three metres back — and open your aperture as wide as it goes so only one is sharp at a time. Focus on the near one, then, while recording, smoothly change focus to the far one and hold. Do it five times; keep the smoothest. Phone-only: many camera apps let you tap-and-hold to lock focus, then tap the far subject to rack — or use a manual-focus app. Self-review question: did the pull lead your eye, or did it lurch and hunt? A good rack is slow, smooth, and motivated by something — a sound, a movement, a line — that tells the viewer why their attention just travelled.

  2. A bright coloured outline over whatever is in sharp focus, so you can see the plane of focus land on the subject's eyes — it turns "guess and hope" into "watch it hit."
  3. Because the sharp detail was never recorded — sharpening a soft shot only produces crunchy artefacts; the information isn't in the file (see §4.3's ✂️ In the Edit).

4.6 Choosing the right lens for the shot

You now have all the pieces; this section is the working logic that assembles them on a real shoot. Choosing a lens is a two-question decision, asked in this order, every time: What is this shot about — and how should the viewer feel about it? Then, and only then: what focal length, aperture, and focus behaviour deliver that feeling? Notice the order. The story question comes first; the glass is the answer to it. Reach for a lens because of what you want the audience to feel, never because it is the one already on the camera.

Walk the decision in four moves:

  1. Emotional distance → focal length. Do you want the viewer inside this (wide, get close) or watching it (long, back up)? Should the space feel open and deep (wide) or compressed and isolating (long)? Should a face read as honest and plain (normal) or flattered and lifted (short telephoto)? Pick the range that matches the feeling from §4.1.
  2. What the eye must look at → aperture and depth of field. Should the background be present and legible (stop down, deep focus) or erased so only the subject exists (open up, shallow focus)? How much focus-margin do you need for the movement in the shot? Pick the aperture from §4.2–4.3, remembering the ✂️ warning: err a hair deep on anything critical.
  3. Framing → distance, given the lens. You picked a focal length for its perspective; now the size you want the subject dictates how far away you stand. Walk to that spot. (If you physically cannot — a cliff, a stage, a shy animal — that constraint may send you back to step 1 for a longer lens.)
  4. Movement and subject behaviour → focus plan. Static subject you can lock? Manual with peaking. Moving subject, solo operator? Eye-detect autofocus, tested first. A reveal or a hand-off between two planes? Plan a manual rack on marks (§4.5).

💡 Why It Works: constraints make you decide. Notice that a beginner with one prime and a phone, forced to choose, often out-shoots someone drowning in options. Every lens choice you make on purpose is a sentence you can say out loud — "I went long and wide-open to isolate her from a busy room and make us watch from a respectful distance." A choice you can defend is a choice that serves the story. The bag of gear is worthless until you can name why you reached into it. Make the naming a habit, and the smallest kit becomes powerful.

🔬 The Tech (optional — skip freely). Three deeper notes for the curious; you can make every video in this book without them. (1) What the f-number is: it is focal length divided by the diameter of the aperture opening, which is why it is a ratio and why the scale runs "backwards." It also means the same f-number gives a similar exposure on any lens — a genuinely useful standardisation. (2) T-stops: cinema lenses are often marked in T-stops rather than f-stops; a T-stop measures the light the lens actually transmits (accounting for light lost inside the glass), so two lenses set to the same T-stop truly match in brightness — handy when matching shots across different lenses. (3) Sensor size and the "equivalent" look: a bigger sensor makes it easier to get shallow depth of field at a given framing, which is why full-frame and larger sensors are prized for the melty look and phones struggle to achieve it optically. It ties straight back to the crop factor from Chapter 2 — the sensor changes not just your field of view but how much background separation a given aperture buys you.

Production Checkpoint

Your talking-head — Project 1, the 60-second piece you have been building since Chapter 1 — now gets its lens. In Chapter 2 you set its technical baseline (resolution, frame rate, a 180° shutter); now you decide how it sees.

Your task: choose the focal length and aperture for your talking-head, and shoot a framing / depth-of-field test. Concretely:

  1. Pick a focal length for the feeling you want. Most talking-heads want the flattering, isolating look of the 50–85mm-equiv range (§4.1, §4.6). Frame a medium close-up and note how far back you had to stand — that distance is part of your look.
  2. Shoot a depth-of-field ladder. Record the same framing at three apertures — say wide open, one stop down, and a stop or two further (or, on a phone, portrait mode on vs. off, plus real separation by moving the subject away from the wall). Keep everything else identical.
  3. Decide how much background separation the story wants. Watch the ladder back. Does this piece want the background erased (open, shallow — the subject is everything) or present (stopped down — the room says something about them)? Write down the focal length and aperture you chose and the one-sentence reason.

Why this matters: background separation is a story decision disguised as a technical one. An entrepreneur in their workshop might want the tools legible behind them; a coach delivering hard truth might want everything gone but their eyes. Choosing on purpose — and proving it with a test rather than guessing on the day — is exactly the "fix it in pre" discipline that separates footage you can use from footage you hope will work. You will lock Project 1's full look across the lighting and audio chapters ahead; today you decided what it looks through.

  • The lens shapes the image more than the body does. Focal length and aperture are storytelling choices — about the viewer's relationship to the subject and where their eye is allowed to go — not just "zoom" and "brightness."

  • Perspective is set by camera-to-subject distance, not by the lens. The lens only changes how much fits in frame; standing close (wide) opens space, standing far (long) compresses it. Choosing a focal length is choosing where to stand.
  • Aperture (read as an f-stop: small number = big opening = more light and shallower focus) does two jobs at once. The light half is deferred to Chapter 5; the focus half is ours.
  • Depth of field (the front-to-back zone of sharpness) is made shallower by three stacking levers: open the aperture, go longer, get closer. Shallow = isolate the subject (composition by subtraction); deep = keep context and miss-proof focus. Bokeh is the character of the blur.
  • Decide depth of field and focus on set — the edit cannot refocus a soft shot or blur a deep one cleanly (✂️).
  • Prime (one focal length, sharper/faster/cheaper, makes you move) vs zoom (a range, flexible, heavier/slower). The phone has 2–3 real lenses — favour the main "1x," treat in-between values as fake digital zoom, and know that portrait mode computes its blur.
  • Focus is a performance in video. Use eye-detect autofocus for solo/moving work (test it), manual for control and pulls, and turn on focus peaking and punch-in. A focus pull leads the eye between planes — a cut you don't have to make.
  • Choosing a lens is a two-question decision, story first: what is this shot about and how should it feel? → then focal length, aperture, and focus plan.

Spaced Review

Retrieval keeps knowledge from evaporating. These reach back to Chapters 2 and 3 — the camera's foundations that this chapter's lens choices sit on top of.

  1. (Ch. 2) Your camera has a smaller-than-full-frame sensor with a crop factor. You want the framing a 50mm gives on full-frame. What actual focal length gets you there, and what does "full-frame-equivalent" mean?

Check yourself 1. About `25mm` — because on a `2×` sensor, a `25mm` lens frames like a `50mm` does on full-frame. "Full-frame-equivalent" restates any lens's framing as the number that would give the *same* field of view on a full-frame sensor, so shooters on different cameras can compare looks. 2. Shutter ≈ `1 / (2 × 24)` = `1/48 s` (set `1/50` in practice, a 180° shutter angle). Ignore it and motion goes wrong two ways: too fast a shutter gives stuttery, staccato motion; too slow gives a smeary, over-blurred image. 3. A larger sensor requires you to use a longer focal length (or stand closer) to achieve the same framing, and longer/closer both shrink depth of field — so at equivalent framing the big sensor throws more of the background out of focus. Crop factor is the number that tells you how much smaller sensors "crop in," and thus how much less separation they give. 4. A **codec** is the method used to *compress and encode* the video data; a **container** (the file wrapper, e.g. `.mov`, `.mp4`) is the box that holds the encoded video, audio, and metadata together. The same container can hold different codecs — which is why a file that "won't import" is usually a codec issue, not the extension. 5. **Log** records a flatter, lower-contrast image that preserves more of the scene's **dynamic range** (shadow-to-highlight information), giving you far more latitude to push colour and exposure in the grade without the image falling apart — flexibility a baked-in standard profile has already thrown away.

What's Next

You can now make the lens see the way the story needs — how wide, how deep, how sharp, and where the eye lands. But a lens is only ever handling light, and so far we have let the camera guess how much of it to let through. In Chapter 5 we take that guess away and put you in command of exposure: the locked triangle of ISO, shutter, and aperture (with the shutter pinned by the 180° rule you already know), the ND filter that tames a bright day, and — most importantly — how to judge a correct image with scopes and tools like zebras and false colour instead of trusting your eye on a small, lying screen. The aperture ring you just learned to use for focus is about to pull double duty; now we learn to balance it for light.
