Color correction rewards two things: reading the scopes fluently, and putting in reps. The resources below build both. Start with the free official training and one hands-on session, then deepen with a dedicated color book. Start here (a suggested order)
- Do one guided correction pass tonight using the official DaVinci Resolve training below — hands beat reading for this skill.
- Read a color book's opening chapters (Van Hurkman or Hullfish) to cement why the scopes work the way they do.
- Study one naturalistic film (Case Study 1's Nomadland, or the others below) with the scopes concept in your head.
- Come back to the standards and the deep technical text only if and when color becomes a serious pursuit.
Foundational books
The Filmmaker's Handbook — Steven Ascher & Edward Pincus. The single-volume reference for the whole craft; its post-production and color sections give you the correction-before-grading pipeline in the context of everything else. Not color-specific, but the best place to see how correction fits the whole production. 💼 🎓 (This is the book the whole series leans on — worth owning.)
Color Correction Handbook: Professional Techniques for Video and Cinema — Alexis Van Hurkman. The definitive practical text on correction and grading. It is thorough on exactly this chapter's material — scopes, primary corrections, balancing, and matching — with a working colorist's discipline. If you buy one color book, buy this. 💼 🎓 (Van Hurkman also wrote the Color Correction Look Book for creative grades — save that for Chapter 32.)
The Art and Technique of Digital Color Correction — Steve Hullfish. A clear, example-driven walk through real correction decisions, strong on reading images and scopes and on the reasoning behind each move. Excellent second book, or first if you prefer worked examples over reference. 🎥 💼
Cinematography: Theory and Practice — Blain Brown. Not a color-grading manual, but its chapters on exposure, color, and image control explain the why under the whole pipeline — what the camera captured, and therefore what you have to work with in correction. Read alongside Chapters 3 and 5. 💼 🎓
Digital Video and HD: Algorithms and Interfaces — Charles Poynton. The deep technical reference for color science, gamma, and the standards behind the scopes. This is advanced and genuinely mathematical — reach for it only if you want to understand Rec.709, code values, and gamma at the engineering level. Overkill for most; indispensable for a few. 🎓 (advanced/optional)
Free official training and online learning
Blackmagic Design's official DaVinci Resolve training — Blackmagic Design. Free, downloadable training guides (including beginner and colorist-focused volumes) plus the free full software. Because Resolve is this book's reference color tool and one of the strongest color applications made, its official training is the fastest way to turn this chapter's concepts into muscle memory. Reputable working-colorist channels on YouTube. A number of professional colorists teach correction and grading for free on YouTube; search for well-reviewed Resolve color tutorials and favor channels run by people who color for a living. They're ideal for watching a correction happen in real time — seeing a colorist read a parade and neutralize a cast is worth a thousand words. 🎥 💼 (Tier 2: quality varies, so cross-check any single tip against the books above.)

Films and sequences to study (for the eye)
Watch these with the scopes concept in mind — asking, at every cut, does this match, and how did they make it look this true? Add them to your "Watch This" shelf.
Nomadland (2020) — dir. Chloé Zhao, DP Joshua James Richards. The Case Study 1 film and the reference for corrected, consistent, natural color. Study how many real locations and evenings are matched into one coherent, honest world, and how every complexion reads true. This is what excellent correction, protected, looks like. 🎥 💼 🎓
The Revenant (2015) — dir. Alejandro G. Iñárritu, DP Emmanuel Lubezki. Shot largely in natural light, it's a masterclass in exposing for and protecting a difficult, changing natural range, and in the discipline of a consistent cold naturalism. Watch how the snow (a huge, easily-blown highlight) keeps its detail. 💼 🎓
Moonlight (2016) — dir. Barry Jenkins, DP James Laxton. Widely discussed for its beautiful, deliberate rendering of a range of skin tones — the clearest study of correcting and rendering skin honestly and gorgeously across complexions, the accessibility-and-truth theme of §31.3. (Its distinct per-act looks are grading — Chapter 32 territory — but the skin work is a correction lesson.) 🎥 💼 🎓
A high-end nature documentary (for example, the Planet Earth series) — the ultimate matching problem: footage from many cameras, operators, days, and conditions, corrected into one seamless, consistent world. Watch a single sequence and marvel that it was not shot in one take on one camera. That invisibility is the matching discipline of §31.5 at the highest level. 📱 🎥
Tools and apps
DaVinci Resolve (free) — Blackmagic Design. The book's reference color tool, and genuinely professional at the free tier — full scopes, primary wheels, temperature/tint, eyedropper balance, and matching tools. There is no better place to practice this chapter, at any price. 📱 🎥 💼 🎓
A grey card (or an 18% grey / white balance card) — any brand. A few dollars, and the highest-leverage color purchase you can make: shoot it under your light and correction starts with one perfect click. A plain white sheet of paper is a serviceable stand-in. 📱 🎥 💼 🎓
Your editor's built-in scopes — free, already installed. The waveform, RGB parade, and vectorscope in whatever software you use are the actual instruments of this chapter. Learn to summon all three at once and keep them visible while you work. 📱 🎥 💼 🎓
A calibrated reference monitor — later, and only if color becomes a profession. A display whose color you can trust helps chase the last few percent, but it is not required to correct: the scopes keep you honest on any screen. Do not let its absence stop you. 💼 (advanced/optional)
Standards worth knowing by name
Rec.709 (ITU-R BT.709) — the standard that defines how normal HD video's brightness and color should map for a normal screen. It's the target your corrected image should live inside — "keep it Rec.709-legal" and "keep it 0–100% on the scope" mean nearly the same thing. Worth knowing the name; you don't need to read the specification. 🎓 (Its wide-gamut/HDR successor, Rec.2020, comes up in Chapter 36's delivery discussion.)
Where this leads
Everything here supports the same move: read the scopes, correct to a true and consistent baseline, and match your scenes.
