Case Study 1: The Tapes They Threw Away — What a Lost Archive Teaches About Never Losing Work
This is an analysis of a real, widely-reported chapter of broadcasting history: the routine erasing and junking of television recordings by major broadcasters — the BBC among the most documented — during the 1960s and 1970s, and the long, patient recovery that followed. It is attributed at the level of its well-established outline. Because this history is still being pieced together and different sources report different figures, exact episode counts and dates are given cautiously and as approximate; where a number would be a guess, we say so. The craft lessons, however, are exact.
Why this matters
Every other case study in this book is about a piece of work that exists — a scene you can go watch, a technique you can go study. This one is about work that doesn't exist anymore, because the people who made it threw it away. And that makes it, for this chapter, the most important case study of all.
Across the 1960s and into the 1970s, television was made on expensive videotape and, for distribution and preservation, copied onto film. Storage was finite, tape was costly, and — this is the part that should make every video maker sit up — nobody was sure the recordings were worth keeping. There was no home-video market. Repeat broadcasts were limited by rights and by fashion. Once a program had aired, its master recording looked, to a busy institution watching its budget, like an expensive object taking up space to no obvious purpose. Programs that are now considered priceless — early episodes of long-running series, landmark comedy, live drama, performances by artists at their peak — were, in the coldest institutional sense, deleted to save money and room.
The result is one of the largest, best-documented archival losses in media history, and it is exactly the disaster this chapter exists to prevent, scaled up to a national institution. Read at the level of a single freelancer's drive, it is the same three mistakes, wearing a suit:

Context: how a careful institution destroyed its own history
The first thing to understand is that the people who wiped the tapes were not vandals. They were professionals following a defensible logic, and understanding that logic is the whole lesson, because you will feel the same logic pulling at you the next time a drive fills up.
Here is the logic as it stood. Videotape in that era was genuinely expensive — a reel represented real money — and it was designed to be reused, recorded over again and again like an office cassette. Film copies (made by pointing a film camera at a video monitor, a process called telerecording) were bulky, and physical shelf space in a growing broadcaster was scarce and costly. Crucially, the future value of the material was invisible. There was no way to sell old episodes to home viewers, because home video did not exist. Repeat broadcasts were constrained by performers' rights and by the simple assumption that audiences wanted new programming, not reruns. Put yourself honestly in that office: you are holding an expensive, bulky object that has already done its one job — it aired — and that has no visible way of ever making money or being used again, and you are being asked to pay to store it indefinitely. Wiping it looks less like destruction and more like responsible housekeeping.
That is the trap, and it is worth naming precisely because it is the same trap in miniature every time you look at a finished project eating space on your working drive. The value of finished work is mostly in the future, and the future is exactly what you cannot see when you decide to delete. The old episode became precious later — when a home-video market appeared, when the series became a cultural institution, when the performers became legends, when scholars wanted to study the era. None of that value existed on the day someone decided the tape was worth more empty. The institution optimized for the visible present (space, money, now) and paid in an invisible future (history, gone).

The episodes we still have are, overwhelmingly, the ones that existed in a
SECOND form (film, not tape) in a SECOND place (abroad, not head office).
That is 3-2-1, discovered by accident instead of on purpose.
Read FIGURE CS1.1 as the entire case study compressed into one diagram. A program made only as a master videotape at headquarters had one copy, one medium, one location — and when that copy was wiped, the program was simply gone, forever, with nothing to recover. The scale of the loss (told carefully)
Exact numbers here are genuinely uncertain and keep changing as material is found, so treat everything in this section as approximate and directional rather than precise. What is well established is the shape: a very large number of television recordings from this era do not survive in their broadcasters' archives. For one famous long-running science-fiction series alone, a substantial number of 1960s episodes — commonly reported in the dozens — remain missing from the archive, and it is one series among many affected. Landmark comedy, music performances (including, by widely-repeated account, appearances by major musical artists of the era at the height of their fame), live and near-live drama — swaths of it were wiped or junked. The precise tally is a moving target and the subject of ongoing research; the safe, honest statement is that the loss runs to a great many programs, and that some of it is gone beyond any hope of recovery.
For our purposes the exact figure does not matter. What matters is the asymmetry, and it is brutal: the cost of keeping each recording was small and knowable (a bit of shelf space, a bit of tape), while the cost of losing it was enormous and unknowable — cultural, historical, and, once home video and streaming arrived, straightforwardly financial. The institution saved a small, certain amount and lost a large, uncertain fortune. This is the exact math of your own backup decision, and it always points the same way: the cost of a copy is small and known; the cost of loss is large and unknown; so you always make the copy. Every professional who has ever lost a project has run this equation the wrong way exactly once, and never again.
It is worth dwelling on why the asymmetry is so easy to misjudge, because the same cognitive trap sits on your own desk. The cost of keeping is concrete and immediate — you can see the shelf filling, feel the drive getting expensive, watch the storage bill arrive. The cost of losing is abstract and deferred — it is a hypothetical future regret that has not happened yet and may never happen to this particular recording. Human beings are wired to overweight the vivid present cost and underweight the fuzzy future one, which is exactly backwards for archiving, where the present cost is trivial and the future cost is catastrophic. The professional's discipline is, in effect, a deliberate correction for this bias: you keep the copy not because you can prove you'll need it, but because you have learned to distrust your own certainty that you won't. The BBC's archivists were not stupid; they were human, making a locally reasonable trade whose global cost was invisible from where they stood. Your job is to see the global cost they couldn't — and to build habits that make the right choice automatic, so you never have to win the argument with your own present-tense self at all.
What the institution decided — and what it cost
Every archival disaster is a set of decisions that felt sensible in the moment. Naming them teaches you to recognize the same decisions when they show up, much smaller, on your own desk.
They decided the master was reusable. The single most consequential choice was treating the recording as a container (valuable tape that happened to have a program on it) rather than as content (an irreplaceable program that happened to be on tape). Wiping the master to reclaim the tape is the institutional twin of the mistake in §37.5 — deleting your camera originals to free a drive. They had no reliable index, so even survivors were 'lost.' A quieter part of the story: archival practice was inconsistent and underfunded, cans were sometimes mislabeled or misfiled, and records of what existed and where were unreliable. The consequence is haunting — some material that survived was nonetheless effectively lost for years because nobody knew it was there or could find it, occasionally turning up later misfiled in the institution's own vaults. That is a findability failure (§37.1–37.2) at national scale: a copy you cannot locate is, for every practical purpose, a copy you do not have. It is the precise reason this chapter makes you name files so their identity is legible and structure folders so every asset has one obvious home. An archive without an index is a warehouse with the lights off.
They optimized for the visible present. Underneath all of it was the deepest error: valuing what could be seen now (space, budget, this quarter) over what could not be seen yet (history, repeats, a home-video fortune, cultural memory). This is not a failure of intelligence; it is a failure of imagination about the future — and it is the same failure that whispers "you'll never need this old project again" as your drive fills up. The professional habit this chapter installs is a deliberate distrust of that whisper: you keep finished work precisely because you cannot predict which piece of it will matter, and to whom, and when.
The rescue: 3-2-1, proven in the wild
If the story ended at the loss, it would be only a warning. But it does not end there, and the second half is the most encouraging proof of this chapter's principles you will find anywhere — because the material that came back came back through exactly the mechanisms §37.3 tells you to build on purpose.

Where the video master was wiped and no film print survives, these off-air sound recordings often do — a copy in a completely different medium, made by ordinary people, that preserved the performance when the "real" copy was gone. Restorers have paired that surviving audio with off-screen photographs, or with new animation, to reconstruct episodes whose pictures no longer exist. A copy in a second medium survived a failure that took the first. That is the "two media types" rule, proven by amateurs with cassette recorders.
The rescue does not undo the loss — much is gone for good, and the recovered fraction came at the cost of decades of patient, expensive detective work that a little foresight would have made unnecessary. But it teaches the positive lesson with total clarity: redundancy is what survives. Not the best copy, not the copy in the most prestigious vault — the copy that happened to exist somewhere else, or in some other form. Build that redundancy on purpose, for every project, and you never need the detective work at all.
How disciplined archives do it now
The industry learned. The modern practice of film and television preservation — at national archives, at studios, at any broadcaster that has absorbed this history — is essentially this chapter's discipline, formalized and funded, and it is worth seeing because it shows you what your own habits scale up to.
Serious archives today keep multiple copies of every asset, deliberately, not by accident. They store them on different media and in different physical locations, including geographically separated facilities — 3-2-1 as institutional policy rather than lucky happenstance. They keep high-quality masters, not just access copies, so the material can be re-mastered to new formats as technology changes (your §37.5 rule: preserve the original, not only the deliverable). They verify integrity over time with checksums to catch silent decay, and they migrate material onto fresh media and into current formats on a schedule, because they have learned that an archive left untouched quietly dies as its media ages and its formats obsolesce (the §37.5 "archives rot if you ignore them" principle, run as standing policy). And they maintain rigorous catalogs — consistent identifiers, careful metadata, an index you can actually search — so that a copy that exists can always be found, closing the exact gap that once left survivors lost in their own vaults.

The brief: perform a one-hour preservation audit of everything you have made that you would be upset to lose, and fix the single worst gap you find.
Do this:
- Inventory. List your projects and, for each, write how many copies exist, on how many media types, in how many locations. This is your personal FIGURE CS1.1 — mark every project living a "Fate A" (one copy, one place), because those are your wiped-tapes-in-waiting.
- Find your off-site gap. Almost certainly, some project you care about has no copy anywhere but your home or your bag. Pick the one you'd least like to lose and give it a Fate B today — a cloud upload or a drive taken elsewhere. One off-site copy is the highest-value hour in this whole book.
- Check your index. Could you find your master export and your signed releases for a two-year-old project in under a minute? If not, you have the BBC's misfiled-vault problem at small scale. Retrofit the folder structure and naming from §37.1–37.2 on at least your most important project.
- Schedule the migration. Put a recurring reminder in your calendar — once or twice a year — to verify your archives still open and re-copy them onto current media. Make the archive a verb.
