Chapter 3 — Further Reading
You do not need any of these to keep going — the chapter stands on its own, and the fastest way to understand codecs and color is to shoot a clip and try to grade it until it breaks. But this chapter sits on top of a deep technical literature (compression, color science, camera engineering), and a little reading here pays off for the rest of the book, especially when you reach exposure (Chapter 5), color (Chapters 31–32), and delivery (Chapter 36). Below are trustworthy places to go deeper, grouped by purpose, with a note on who each is for. (Prices, editions, camera models, and links change constantly; titles, standards, and creators are what to search for — and specific bitrate/format numbers on any given camera should always be checked against its own manual, never taken from memory.)
Foundational books
- The Filmmaker's Handbook — Steven Ascher & Edward Pincus. The encyclopedic reference this textbook is designed to complement, and the natural next step from this chapter. Its chapters on digital recording, codecs, color, and dynamic range go far deeper than we can, with the same principle-first spirit — the book you keep on the shelf and consult when a specific question (a codec family, a color space, a compression scheme) comes up. - Cinematography: Theory and Practice — Blain Brown. Especially strong on exactly this chapter's material: digital image capture, dynamic range, Log/gamma, and color. For readers who want the deeper science behind the recorded image.
- Color Correction Handbook — Alexis Van Hurkman. The standard, thorough reference on color grading. It belongs on this chapter's list because it makes vividly clear why the capture decisions here (bit depth, chroma, Log, dynamic range) matter — you understand why 10-bit and 4:2:2 exist once you've seen what a colorist actually does to footage. Understanding the standards (go to the source)
- The real technical standards, by name. When you want the truth rather than a forum argument, the underlying standards are public and authoritative: Rec.709 (standard HD color), Rec.2020 / Rec.2100 (wide-gamut and HDR, including HLG), and the codec standards behind H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC. You don't need to read them cover to cover — but knowing they exist, and that "Rec.709" is a real specification rather than a vibe, changes how you read everything else. - Camera manufacturers' own white papers on their Log formats. The makers of S-Log, C-Log, V-Log, Log-C, and the rest publish documents describing exactly what their curve captures and how to expose and grade it. Films and sequences to study (watch like a maker)
- Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), for its color. Analyzed in this chapter's Case Study 1. Watch it specifically for the grade — the molten-orange days, the electric-blue nights (many shot in daylight) — and keep asking: what must they have captured to be able to push it this far? The clearest possible proof that the look is built from what you record. For everyone studying capture-for-the-grade.
- Any film with a strong, identifiable "look." A heavily-graded thriller, a warm nostalgic period piece, a bleached war film. Watch two minutes for the color alone and ask whether it could have come straight from a camera or was obviously built in post. Hearing a working professional justify shooting flat and building the look in the grade turns this chapter's abstractions into craft. A word on chasing formats
Codecs, bit depths, and format numbers are among the most comparable things about cameras, which makes them catnip for gear-review content — and a trap. Remember what this chapter actually argued: the highest rung of the flexibility ladder is rarely the right one, 8-bit 4:2:0 is genuinely fine for a great deal of work, and Log or RAW shot without a pipeline makes your video worse, not better. Read format specs when a specific job needs a specific capability. Otherwise your attention is far better spent on light, sound, and the edit, which will improve your video more than any codec on any spec sheet.

- Watch a good before/after grade reveal and a banding/8-bit-vs-10-bit demonstration — seeing the mechanism move is the fastest way to lock in §3.3 and §3.4.
