Part VII — Finishing: Color, Sound, Motion, and VFX
A locked cut is a finished story, but not yet a finished video. Finishing is the layer of craft that separates "well edited" from "professional" — the color that sets the mood, the sound mix that lets every word land, the titles that inform, and the effects that, done right, you never notice. It is the polish, and polish is not optional: it is the difference the audience feels even when they cannot name it.
Five chapters take your locked cuts to delivery-ready:
- Chapter 31 — Color Correction. Scopes, white balance, and matching shots — fixing and balancing the image to a clean, consistent baseline.
- Chapter 32 — Color Grading. LUTs, the look, and mood — the creative color that gives a piece its feeling, built with restraint.
- Chapter 33 — Audio Post-Production. Dialogue cleanup, mixing, music, and sound design — where "sounds professional" is finally won, and mastered to a loudness standard.
- Chapter 34 — Motion Graphics. Titles, lower thirds, and animation — delivering information and polish with keyframes and taste.
- Chapter 35 — Compositing and Visual Effects. Green screen, keying, and stock elements — invisible, motivated effects, plus the ethics of synthetic media.
Two of the book's throughlines close their arcs here. Sound is half the picture reaches its conclusion in Chapter 33, where the audio you fought to capture cleanly becomes a designed, balanced mix. And motivate every choice governs color and effects as strictly as it governed the camera: a look, a title, or a composite that isn't motivated by the story is just decoration, and decoration is how finishing goes wrong.
Across Part VII you finish Project 3, your 5-minute branded piece: you correct and grade it (Ch.31–32), mix and score it (Ch.33), add its motion graphics (Ch.34), and composite any effects it needs (Ch.35). The Café Scene gets its final grade and soundscape. By the end of Part VII, all three of your projects look and sound like professional work. Part VIII then delivers them to the world — and turns your three videos into a career.
