Chapter 7: The Language of Shots

Overview

Point your camera at two people having a conversation, press record, and hold on a single wide shot from across the room until they finish. You will capture the whole scene. Every word, every gesture, nothing missed. And it will be almost unwatchable — flat, distant, and lifeless, like a stage play seen from the last row of the balcony. Now shoot the same conversation a different way: a wide to show us the room and who is where, then in on each person for their lines, then closer still for the moment one of them hears the thing that changes everything. Same dialogue. Same actors. Same camera. But the second version has rhythm, emphasis, and feeling — it tells you where to look and when, and it holds you to the end.

The difference is not equipment and not talent. The difference is that the first version is one shot and the second is coverage — a scene broken into pieces of different sizes and angles, shot so it can be assembled in the edit. Chapter 6 taught you to compose a single frame: where to put the subject, what to leave out. This chapter is about the next thing up — the language you build out of frames. Because film has a grammar as real as any spoken one. Shot sizes are its words. Camera angles are its adjectives. The 180-degree line is the rule that keeps a sentence readable. And coverage — shooting a scene from enough angles and distances — is how you write in that grammar so an editor (almost always you) has something to say.

Here is the idea the whole chapter turns on, and it is the fifth of this book's throughlines arriving in force: you shoot for the edit. You do not shoot a scene. You shoot the pieces of a scene, knowing they will be reassembled later. Every choice you make with the camera in this chapter is really a choice you are making for the timeline — a wide the editor can establish with, a medium they can play the exchange in, a close-up they can punctuate with, a matched eyeline that lets two shots become a conversation. Learn to see a scene as its pieces, and you have crossed from taking pictures to building films.

7.1 Shot sizes: wide, medium, close-up, and their jobs

Every scene you have ever loved was built out of shots at different distances from the subject, cut together. That distance — how much of the subject fills the frame — is the single most important descriptive fact about a shot, and it has a name. Shot sizes are the standard vocabulary for how much of the subject the frame contains, measured (by long convention) against the human figure: from so far away that a person is a speck in a landscape, to so close that a single eye fills the screen. Learn the names and you can call for any shot in one or two letters; learn their jobs and you can build a scene that tells the viewer exactly where to look and how to feel, moment by moment.

There are three sizes you must know cold, because they are the anchors of the whole system and the words you will use ninety percent of the time:

  • The wide shot (WS) — also called the long shot (LS) — frames the whole subject head-to-toe with their surroundings. Its job is to show us who someone is and where they are: the geography, the body language, the space. A wide shot is a promise about place, which is why the first shot of a scene is so often wide (an establishing shot). We met one on the very first page of this book — the wide of the café in FIGURE 1.2, where the person was deliberately small so we read the room first.
  • The medium shot (MS) frames a person from roughly the waist up. Its job is conversation and gesture. It is the human default — close enough to read expression, wide enough to see the hands and the posture — which is why so much dialogue lives here. If the wide is the establishing sentence, the medium is the workhorse verb.
  • The close-up (CU) frames the head and shoulders, filling the screen with a face. Its job is emotion. In a close-up we read the eyes, the flicker of a decision, the thing a person is not saying. The close-up is the exclamation point of the visual language — it tells the viewer this, right here, is what matters.

Around those three anchors sits a full ladder of standard sizes, each a notch tighter than the last. You do not need to memorize the abbreviations tonight, but you will absorb them fast because working shooters and editors say them constantly:

Reading the ladder from left to right: EWS/ELS (extreme wide / extreme long shot) is the epic or the establishing shot where a person is a dot and the environment is everything. WS/LS (wide / long) gives you the whole body in its space. MLS (medium long shot, sometimes the "cowboy," framed mid-thigh up) is the in-between that keeps hands and stance while coming closer. MS (medium) is waist-up. MCU (medium close-up), chest-and-head, is the single most common framing for a person talking to camera or to an interviewer — enough face for expression, enough air to breathe; it is the framing your talking-head lives in. CU (close-up) is the face. ECU (extreme close-up) isolates one detail — an eye, a trembling lip, a phone screen, a finger on a trigger.

Notice that the ladder is really a scale of attention. That is the whole point of the Hitchcock principle in the epigraph: the size of a subject in the frame should match its importance in the story at that moment. When the place matters most, go wide. When the exchange matters most, sit in the medium. When the feeling matters most, push into the close-up. A shot size is not a technical setting; it is a sentence about what deserves the viewer's attention right now. Get the size wrong — a close-up when we needed the geography, a wide when we needed the tear — and you have told the viewer to look at the wrong thing.

💡 Why It Works: the close-up is a spotlight you control. A human face at close-up size occupies far more of the viewer's visual field than anything else on screen, and our brains are wired to lock onto faces and eyes. So a cut to a close-up is not a neutral change of distance — it is a command: look here, feel this. That is why a close-up spent on the wrong moment is worse than wasteful; it is misleading. Save your close-ups for the beats that earn them, and they keep their power. Spend them on everything, and a scene becomes a shapeless string of faces with no punctuation.

How do you actually get these sizes on set? Two ways, and the difference matters. The first and best way is to move your feet — physically change your distance to the subject. The second is to change lens or zoom. These are not equivalent, because of everything you learned in Chapter 4: a longer focal length does not just make the subject bigger, it compresses the background and throws it further out of focus, while a wider lens stretches depth and keeps more sharp. So "a close-up" and "a wide" are not only about size; they carry a look. A close-up shot from far away on a long lens flatters a face and melts the background; a close-up shot from a foot away on a wide lens distorts the nose and shows the whole room. Both are close-ups. They feel completely different. Choose the size for the story, then choose how you get there for the look.

🎒 Gear Note: your feet are a zoom lens that improves the image. On a phone, the honest way to get a wider or tighter shot is usually to walk — because zooming on most phones is a digital crop that throws away resolution and adds noise, while the phone's separate lenses (the ultra-wide and the tele) are real optics that stay sharp. So: use the phone's dedicated wide lens for your wide shot, walk in and use the main or tele lens for your close-up, and treat the pinch-to-zoom as a last resort. A camera on a tripod with a zoom lens gives you sizes without moving — but even then, remember that framing tighter by zooming and framing tighter by walking closer produce different-looking shots. The size is a story choice; the method is a look choice. Neither costs money to get right.

Here is a close-up doing its one job, rendered as a Described Shot so you can picture it precisely. It is a beat from our recurring Café Scene — the moment, later in the scene, when the person at the window reads a message on their phone.

               stop into shadow. The face is the brightest thing in the frame, so the eye has nowhere else to go.
  THE SOUND    The café's room tone drops slightly under the moment; we hear a breath, the small tick of
               the phone. No dialogue — the size and the silence carry it.
  THE CUT      We cut IN to this close-up from a wider shot of them at the table, on the beat the phone
               buzzes; we will cut OUT to an extreme close-up of the phone screen to show what they read.
  THE EFFECT   Because the frame excludes everything but the face, the viewer has no choice but to read the
               tiny change of expression as the message registers. The whole café narrows to one person's eyes.
  THE LESSON   A close-up is a decision about where the viewer must look. Cut to it on the beat that matters
               most, and the size alone will make the audience feel the moment — no line of dialogue required.

The most common shot-size mistake at this stage is not choosing a wrong size — it is choosing only one.

⚠️ Common Mistake: shooting the whole scene at one size. Beginners, especially with a single locked-off camera, tend to shoot everything in one medium shot and stop. The result has no rhythm and no emphasis: every moment gets the same weight, so nothing stands out, and the editor has nothing to cut to. The fix is a habit: for any scene, deliberately capture at least three sizes — a wide to establish, a medium to play it, a close-up to punctuate — even if you have to shoot the scene three times to get them. A scene you can only see at one distance is a scene you can barely edit.

🔬 The Tech: the millimetres behind the size (optional). Two shooters both frame a "close-up," and the shots look nothing alike — because size and lens are separate axes. Framing the same head-and-shoulders from three metres away on an 85mm (full-frame-equivalent) lens compresses the background, renders the face flatteringly, and drops the room to a soft wash. Framing that identical close-up from half a metre on a 24mm lens exaggerates the nose, bends the edges, and keeps the room legible behind. Long-lens close-ups feel intimate and observed (we are far, watching closely); wide-lens close-ups feel confrontational and immediate (we are right there, in their space). This is why the size alone never fully specifies a shot — but you can skip this box entirely and still shoot great coverage: pick the size for the story first, and let the lens be your refinement.

7.2 Angles and height: high, low, eye-level, and POV

Size decides how much of the subject we see. Angle and height decide from where — and where you put the camera in space is never neutral, because we read camera position the way we read a person standing over us or crouching below us in real life. Change the height of the lens and you change how powerful, how vulnerable, how honest a subject looks, without touching the size at all.

Start with camera height, measured against the subject's eyes:

  • Eye-level — the lens sits at the subject's eye height. This is the neutral, honest, default position. It meets the subject as an equal; it neither flatters nor judges. Most of your talking-head and interview work will be at or very near eye-level, because it invites trust. When in doubt, put the lens at their eyes.
  • High angle — the camera looks down at the subject. Looking down makes a subject smaller, weaker, more observed or more vulnerable. A high angle can make a person look isolated in a big space, or childlike, or watched. (It is also, un-storytold, the accidental angle of a phone held up and pointed down at someone sitting — which is exactly why that framing subtly diminishes people you did not mean to diminish.)
  • Low angle — the camera looks up at the subject. Looking up makes a subject bigger, more powerful, more dominant or heroic (or, in the wrong story, more threatening). Superheroes are shot from below; so are villains.

Then there is horizontal angle — where you stand around the subject: frontal (facing them straight on, direct and confrontational or formal), three-quarter (the most common and natural for a face, showing dimension), and profile (from the side, which distances us and is often used for two people facing each other). A subtle tilt of the whole frame — the "Dutch" or canted angle, where the horizon is deliberately not level — signals unease or disorientation; use it rarely and on purpose, because an accidental tilt just reads as a mistake.

Finally, one angle defined by whose eyes we borrow: the POV shot (point-of-view shot) puts the camera where a character's eyes are, so we see what they see. A POV shot almost never works alone — it needs a shot of the person looking right before or after it, so we understand whose view this is. (That look, and the line it draws to the thing seen, is the eyeline — we define it fully in §7.4.) Point the camera at a phone screen and it is just a shot of a phone; show a person looking down, then cut to the phone, and now it is their view of their message. The POV is built by the pairing, not by the single shot.

The throughline of this whole part of the book arrives right here, and it governs every angle you will ever choose: motivate every choice. A low angle is not "cooler" than eye-level. It is right when the story wants this person to loom — and wrong, distractingly wrong, when it does not. The question is never "what angle looks impressive?" It is "what does this moment mean, and what camera position says that?" An angle you can justify in one sentence is direction. An angle you chose because it seemed dramatic is decoration, and the audience feels the difference even when they cannot name it.

💡 Why It Works: we read the camera like a body. Height works because you have spent your whole life reading dominance from vertical position — a parent looming over a small child, a defendant looking up at a judge, a leader on a stage above a crowd. When the camera looks up at someone, it puts you in the low position, so the subject feels bigger than you; when it looks down, you are the one looking down, so they feel smaller. The lens becomes your eyes, and your body's instincts about power come along for free. That is why a motivated angle lands emotionally before the viewer has consciously noticed the camera moved at all.

⚠️ Common Mistake: the unmotivated angle (and the accidental one). Two failures live here. The first is the unmotivated dramatic angle — a low hero angle on someone buying a sandwich, a canted Dutch tilt on a calm interview — which reads as a shooter showing off, not as story. The second, more common, is the accidental angle: the phone held at chest height and tipped down, quietly shooting everyone from a slightly superior, diminishing high angle nobody chose. The fix for both is the same one-sentence test: why is the camera at this height? If you cannot answer, put it at eye-level, which is right far more often than any dramatic angle. Neutral on purpose beats dramatic by accident every time.

7.3 The 180-degree rule and screen direction

Everything so far has been about a single shot. Now we cross into the rule that governs how shots relate to each other in space — the first genuine piece of film grammar, and the one that separates footage that cuts together from footage that fights itself.

Picture two people talking across a table. Draw an imaginary straight line through both of them and extend it out both ends. That line has a name: it is the line, or the axis of action — the invisible straight line connecting the two subjects of a scene (or, for one moving subject, the line of their movement or their look). It is the most important line on any set, and it is not painted on the floor; you carry it in your head. Once you have it, one rule keeps your scene readable:

The 180-degree rule says: keep the camera on one side of the line for every shot in the scene. Choose a side, and shoot all of your angles from within the 180-degree arc on that side. Do that, and each subject keeps a consistent position in the frame — one person stays on the left, the other on the right — and each keeps looking in a consistent direction across every cut. Break it — step across the line for one shot — and the two people suddenly swap sides of the screen and appear to be facing the same way, and the viewer, who was reading the space fluently a moment ago, is lost.

   From CAM 1, 2, or 3 -- all on the near side -- A is always on the LEFT and B on the RIGHT, and
   their eyelines stay opposite, so every angle cuts together cleanly. Step to an [x] position across
   the line and A and B trade places on screen and seem to face the same way. Keeping the camera on
   one side is the whole rule; what goes wrong when you cross it, we treat in full in Chapter 9.

On set, the discipline is physical and simple: when a scene begins, find the line, pick a side, and plant yourself there. Every setup — the wide, the mediums, the close-ups — comes from that side of the room. You can move anywhere along the 180-degree arc on your side (that is a lot of freedom — high, low, close, far, frontal, profile), but you do not step over the line without a deliberate reason and a plan. The line also governs a single moving subject: if someone walks screen-left-to-right in one shot, keep them moving left-to-right in the next, or the cut will make them look like they turned around. That consistency of left, right, and facing has a name — screen direction — and it is the reader's compass for who is where and who is going which way.

🔗 Connection: two different "180s" — do not confuse them. You met a 180-degree rule back in Chapter 2, but that was the 180-degree shutter rule — a rule about shutter angle and motion blur (shoot with a shutter near 1/(2 × frame rate), so 1/50 s at 24 fps, for natural-looking motion). The 180-degree rule in this chapter is a completely different rule about camera position relative to the line. Same number, unrelated ideas: one is about how motion looks; this one is about how space reads. Filmmakers say both constantly and just know which they mean from context — now you do too.

We are going to establish the line here and stop at the edge of what breaks when you cross it, because that is a whole craft of its own.

🔗 Connection: the continuity treatment lives in Chapter 9. The line is where continuity begins, but the failure modes — what crossing the line does to a cut, how to keep screen direction consistent across a whole sequence, matching action so a movement continues seamlessly from one angle to the next, the 30-degree rule and the jump cut it prevents — all belong to Chapter 9, Continuity and the Edit-Minded Shoot. Here, learn to see the line and stay on one side of it. There, we make the cuts that depend on it bulletproof. If you keep the camera on one side of the line for now, you have already done ninety percent of what continuity asks.

⚠️ Common Mistake: crossing the line by accident. The classic version: you shoot one person from your side of the table, then walk around to get "a better angle" on the second person — and without realizing it, you have crossed the line. In the edit, the two of them now appear to be looking the same way instead of at each other, and the conversation falls apart spatially. The fix is prevention: decide your side before you roll, and treat the line as a wall you do not walk through. (There are legitimate ways to cross it on purpose — a cutaway, a move that carries us across on camera — but those are Chapter 9's business. For now: pick a side, stay on it.)

Why does any of this matter to you, holding a phone, shooting a simple two-person scene alone? Because the line is the clearest possible case of shooting for the edit. You are not obeying an abstract rule; you are making a promise to the editor — again, usually yourself — that the pieces will fit.

✂️ In the Edit: the line is what lets two angles become one conversation. When your coverage respects the line, the editor can cut from the wide to the medium on A to the reverse on B and back, freely, in any order and on any word, and the space stays perfectly legible — A on the left looking right, B on the right looking left, the whole time. That freedom is the entire reason coverage is worth shooting. Cross the line on even one setup, and that shot becomes a landmine in the timeline: cut to it and the audience is yanked out of the scene, so you either throw it away (wasted) or build an awkward cutaway to hide the flip (a patch for a problem you created on set). Respect the line on set and the edit is easy; break it and you pay for it at 2 a.m. This is you shoot for the edit in one rule.

7.4 Shot-reverse-shot and the eyeline

Now we put sizes, the line, and a new idea together into the single most common structure in all of narrative video: the back-and-forth of a conversation. Its name is shot-reverse-shot — the pattern of alternating angles in a two-person exchange, cutting from a shot favoring one person to the reverse angle favoring the other, back and forth, every setup shot from the same side of the line. You have seen it ten thousand times without naming it. It is how nearly every dialogue scene ever made is built, and once you can shoot it, you can shoot any conversation.

The piece that makes shot-reverse-shot work — that fuses two separately-filmed shots into two people genuinely talking to each other — is the eyeline: the direction a subject is looking, and, in coverage, the imaginary line from their eyes to whatever (or whoever) they are looking at off-screen. When A's eyeline goes camera-right toward where B would be, and B's eyeline goes camera-left toward where A would be, our brains stitch the two shots into a single space: they are looking at each other, even though you may have filmed A in the morning and B after lunch, and even though at the moment you filmed each of them, the other person may have gone to get coffee. The matched eyeline is the illusion, and it is completely reliable when you respect the line.

The two workhorse framings of shot-reverse-shot are the over-the-shoulder shot (OTS) — framing one person over the near shoulder of the other, so we feel the presence of the listener — and the clean single, framing one person alone. A typical exchange alternates OTS on A, OTS on B (or singles), dropping into tighter close-ups as the scene heats up. Here is the geometry, top-down, and then the two shots it produces:

To shoot it cleanly, obey three eyeline habits. First, keep the looks opposite: if A looks camera-right, B must look camera-left. Two people who both look the same way across a cut do not read as talking to each other — they read as staring at a third thing off-screen. Second, match the heights: if the two people are the same height and seated the same way, their eyelines should cross at roughly the same level, so neither seems to be looking over the other's head (unless a real height difference motivates it — then honor the difference). Third, place the off-screen look at the right spot: when you shoot A's single, have your subject look at the actual eyeline — someone (or a marked spot) standing just off the lens where B really is relative to the line — not randomly into space. Get the target right and the reverse will match; guess, and the two shots will feel subtly wrong in a way viewers cannot name but always feel.

🔗 Connection: eyelines you will meet again. Two important variations are coming. In the interview (Chapter 19), the subject looks slightly off the lens to an interviewer beside the camera — the off-axis eyeline — which is why interviews feel like overheard conversation rather than someone addressing you directly; that is a deliberate, specialized eyeline we build there. And the craft of directing where a performer looks — getting a real, relaxed line of sight rather than a stiff one — is part of Chapter 10, Directing the Frame. The eyeline you are learning here is the foundation both of those build on.

⚠️ Common Mistake: mismatched eyelines that break the conversation. The most common shot-reverse-shot failure is the eyelines not matching: both people looking the same direction (because the shooter crossed the line or had them look the wrong way), or one looking noticeably up while the other looks up too (so they seem to be avoiding each other), or the subject looking straight down the lens in one single and off to the side in the other. Any of these quietly tells the viewer these two are not connected. The fix is to mark the eyeline before you roll each single — put a person or a stand-in exactly where the other subject sits relative to the line, and have your subject look right at them. Consistency of eyeline is what sells the whole illusion.

Two singles are cut together and the people seem to be staring past each other, not talking. Name the likely cause.

Check yourself

  1. It's the back-and-forth pattern of a dialogue scene — a shot favoring A, the reverse favoring B, alternating. Shooting from one side of the line keeps A looking one way and B the other, so the cuts read as a real conversation.
  2. The two subjects' looks are opposite (one camera-right, one camera-left) and cross at matching heights, aimed at where the other person actually is relative to the line.
  3. Mismatched eyelines — probably the line was crossed, or the subjects looked the same direction / at the wrong off-screen spot, so their looks don't connect.

7.5 What "coverage" means and why you shoot options

We now arrive at the word this whole chapter has been building toward, the word that turns shot sizes and the line and the eyeline from vocabulary into a working method. Coverage is the complete set of shots of a scene — from enough sizes and angles, with enough overlap — that gives the editor everything needed to assemble the scene and to cut around any problem. Coverage is not "getting some footage." It is deliberately gathering the specific pieces an edit will require, decided in advance, shot with the timeline already in mind. Coverage is the physical practice of you shoot for the edit.

Why shoot options at all, instead of just the one shot you picture? Because the edit needs choices you cannot fully predict on set, and because the edit needs ingredients you cannot invent later. Think about what assembling even a simple conversation demands: a wide to establish who is where and to re-establish the geography whenever the audience needs re-grounding; mediums to play the body of the exchange; close-ups to punctuate the beats that matter and to hold on a reaction; and small detail shots — a hand, an object, a phone — to cut away to when you need to compress time or hide a join. If you shot only the medium, you have no way to establish the room, no way to punch in on the moment that lands, and no cutaway to smooth a trim. You are stuck with what you have, which is not enough. Recall the threshold idea from Chapter 1 — the video is not the footage; you can only arrange what you shot. Coverage is how you make sure that what you shot is arrangeable into a scene.

The professional way to guarantee coverage is the master-and-coverage method. First you shoot the master shot — a wide that runs the entire scene start to finish, capturing all the action and dialogue in one continuous take. The master is your safety net and your spine: no matter what else happens, you have the whole scene once, and its wide framing establishes the space. Then you shoot the scene again (and again) for the closer sizes — the mediums, the singles, the over-the-shoulders, the close-ups — each time running the full exchange, or at least well past every cut point, so the action overlaps across sizes. That overlap is the gift to the edit: because every size covers the same moments, you can cut from any size to any other at any moment and the action will be there in both. Shoot the master, then cover it. It is the oldest reliable recipe on any set, and it works exactly as well with one phone shooting three passes as with three cameras rolling at once.

🚪 Threshold Concept: you don't shoot a scene — you shoot its pieces. This is the idea that reorganizes how you see production forever. A scene does not exist as a thing you capture; it exists as a set of pieces you gather and then assemble. The wide is a piece. Each single is a piece. The close-up is a piece. The insert of the coffee cup is a piece. None of them is the scene; the scene is what the cut makes out of them. Once you truly hold this, your job on set changes: you stop trying to "film the scene" and start asking, for every setup, what piece does the edit need, and have I got it yet? That question — asked on set, answered on set — is the difference between footage you can cut and footage you are stuck with.

Let us make it concrete on the scene we have been building since page one. In Chapter 6 you framed the Café Scene — the establishing wide, the composed shot of the person at the window. Now we cover the heart of it: the order-counter exchange, where the person steps up and orders their coffee and the barista answers. Two subjects, a real conversation, a line to respect. Here is the line and the plan, top-down:

   The customer and the barista are the two subjects; the line runs between them across the counter.
   Every camera stays on the ROOM side. The customer always faces/looks screen-right; the barista
   screen-left. So the master wide, the two mediums, and the close-ups all cut together -- and this
   is coverage the Café Scene has never had before. In Chapter 6 we framed this scene; here we cover it.

With the line set and the camera on the room side, you shoot the pieces one pass at a time (you only have one phone, and that is fine). Rendered as a short Described Sequence, here is the coverage — and, crucially, how it will cut:

Read the table as an editor would. Shot 1, the master wide, establishes the counter and the two people and their sides of the line. Shots 2 and 3 are the shot-reverse-shot of the actual order — the customer favored, looking screen-right; the barista favored, looking screen-left — matched eyelines across the line, so it reads as one exchange. Shot 4 pushes into the close-up for the small human beat (the smile, "for here"), spending a close-up on a moment that earns it. Shot 5 cuts away to an insert of the hands and the cup — a detail that both shows the craft and gives the editor a place to hide a trim or compress the wait. Shot 6 returns to the master to re-establish and hand off to the next beat (the walk to the window). Six pieces, four sizes, all from one side of the line, and they assemble into a complete little scene with a beginning, a middle, and rhythm.

You did not film "the order." You filmed the pieces of it. And because you covered it — master, mediums, close-up, insert, all respecting the line — the scene can now be built, and built more than one way, in the edit. That is the entire lesson of this chapter, standing in one café.

✂️ In the Edit: coverage is choices, and choices are freedom. When you covered the counter properly, you handed the edit a menu: open on the wide or open on the close-up; linger on the customer or favor the barista; hold the reaction for a beat or cut away to the cup; tighten the whole thing by 30 percent by cutting to the insert over a trimmed line. Every one of those is an option you created on set and get to choose in post. Skimp on coverage — shoot only the master — and you have exactly one version of the scene, with visible seams if you try to trim it. The overlap between sizes is what lets you cut on any word; the insert is what lets you hide the cut you could not otherwise make. When we actually assemble this coverage in Chapter 26 and add J- and L-cuts to this exact order exchange in Chapter 28, everything you get to do there was decided here, by what you did or did not shoot. Shoot generously and deliberately, and the edit is a place of options instead of a place of regret.

♿ Accessibility & Inclusion: cover — and frame — for the viewer who cannot hear it. Roughly one in five viewers watches with the sound off, and every deaf or hard-of-hearing viewer watches that way always — which means your coverage has to carry the scene visually, and your framing has to leave room for the words on screen. Two habits, both free: first, make sure your visual storytelling (the reaction close-up, the insert of the cup) tells the scene even with the audio muted, because a scene that only works with sound is a scene those viewers lose. Second, when you frame — especially the close-ups and any shot where text will land — leave a little clearance at the bottom of the frame for captions, and keep faces clear of where subtitles sit, so the words never cover the eyes you worked to feature. Captions are not a post-production afterthought bolted on at export; the room for them is a framing decision you make on set.

🎬 On Set: cover a two-person scene. Find any short, real two-person exchange you can stage — someone ordering at a counter, two friends at a table, a handoff of an object. Constraint: pick a side of the line and stay on it; shoot at least a master wide, a medium favoring each person, and one close-up, plus one insert (a detail) — a minimum of five setups, one phone, several passes. Run the full exchange on every pass so the action overlaps. Self-review question: drag the pieces into any editor, cut them together in the order that feels right, and ask — did the eyelines match, did the space stay legible, and could you cut it a second, different way with the pieces you have? If yes to all three, you have shot coverage. (If a person is on camera, get their okay first — consent is part of the craft, and we treat releases formally in Chapter 38.)

  3. The edit can only arrange what was shot — if a size, angle, or cutaway was never captured, there is nothing to cut to; coverage is decided on set, not rescued in post.

7.6 Reading a scene's shot list

Coverage that lives only in your head tends to become coverage you forgot to shoot. The written form of coverage — the plan that guarantees you leave the location with every piece — is the shot list: a simple numbered table of the shots a scene needs, one row per shot, noting size, angle, subject and action, and any audio or special notes. It is the most useful single page on any shoot, because it converts "I'll figure out the angles when I get there" into "here are the eleven pieces I am not leaving without."

We are only going to learn to read one here, and to jot a rough one — because building shot lists, storyboards, schedules, and the whole apparatus of planning a shoot is a craft of its own that gets its own chapter.

A shot list is just your coverage, promised in advance and written down. Here is the Café order-counter coverage from §7.5, rendered as the shot list you would carry to the shoot — the same scene, seen now as a plan rather than a result:

Read it top to bottom and you can see the finished scene before a single frame is shot: it will open wide, drop into the reverse-shot of the order, punch into the close-up for the human beat, cut away to the cup, and return to the wide to leave. The list also does something quietly powerful — it guarantees the pieces. Standing at the counter with limited time, you will not forget the insert or skip the master, because the list is asking you, row by row, did you get this one? That is the deepest reason planning matters, and it is the last of our five throughlines showing its face: fix it in pre, not in post. The shot you planned and captured is free; the shot you improvised and missed costs you the scene. A page of rows, filled in beforehand, is the cheapest insurance in all of production.

Reading shot lists is also a seeing skill you can practice on finished work — which is what the Frame Log is for. Watch any dialogue scene and you can reverse-engineer its shot list: count the distinct sizes, notice where it establishes and re-establishes, spot the close-up saved for the crucial line, find the side of the line every angle sits on. The more scenes you break down this way, the faster you will build your own.

  3. (Your log entry.) Most simple dialogue scenes run on surprisingly few sizes — often a wide, two singles/OTS, and a couple of close-ups — all on one side of the line. Noticing how few pieces a good scene needs is itself the lesson.

Production Checkpoint

In Chapter 6 you framed your 60-second talking-head — subject on a third, correct headroom and lead room, a composed shot. Now you give the editor something to cut with.

Your task: shoot coverage options for your talking-head — a wide and a matching medium/close-up — so the editor has choices. Set up your subject (it can be you) exactly as you framed them in Chapter 6, then capture the same delivery at more than one size:

  1. A wide (or medium-wide) that shows the subject in their space — the room, the desk, the context. This is your establishing shot and your safety net; it re-grounds the viewer and gives you somewhere to cut when you need to hide an edit.
  2. A matching medium close-up or close-up of the same subject saying the same thing — tighter, for the moments that matter, framed at eye-level with a little headroom.
  3. Run the full delivery at both sizes (record the whole talk twice, or more), so the sizes overlap — the same words exist in both, which is what will let you cut between them freely.

Why this matters: a talking-head shot at a single size is a scene you can barely edit — no way to establish, no way to punch in on the key line, nowhere to cut to hide a trim or a stumble. By covering your subject at two sizes with overlapping takes, you are handing your future self, the editor, actual choices — exactly what you did for the Café counter, now done for your own project. You are not shooting a talking-head; you are shooting the pieces of one. Keep both sizes and your notes together; you will assemble them in Chapter 26. This is you shoot for the edit, applied to the video you are actually building.

The rules, stated crisply:

  • Match size to importance (Hitchcock): the more a subject matters right now, the bigger it should be in the frame. Wide for place, medium for the exchange, close-up for the feeling.
  • Motivate every angle: eye-level is the honest default; a high angle diminishes, a low angle empowers — use them only when the story wants that. If you can't say why the camera is at this height in one sentence, put it at eye-level.
  • The line (axis of action): the imaginary line through your two subjects. The 180-degree rule: keep every camera on one side of it, so positions and eyelines stay consistent and the angles cut together. (Not the same as Chapter 2's 180-degree shutter rule.)
  • Shot-reverse-shot + eyeline: alternate favored angles across a dialogue, all from one side of the line; keep the two looks opposite and aimed at where the other person really is, and two separate shots become one conversation.

The coverage checklist — before you leave any scene, do you have:

When to use what: open on a wide when place matters or the viewer needs grounding; sit in mediums for the ordinary run of a scene; save close-ups for the moments that earn them; cut to an insert when you need to shorten, hide a join, or show a detail. Write it all down as a shot list so you don't leave a piece behind — fix it in pre, not in post.

Spaced Review

Bringing back Chapter 6 (composition), so the frame you build shots out of stays sharp:

  1. In Chapter 6 you learned the rule of thirds. When you frame a close-up for shot-reverse-shot, where on the thirds should the subject's eyes sit, and which way should you leave the extra room?
  2. What is the difference between headroom and lead room (or nose room), and why does a profile or a look-off-frame shot need lead room?
  3. A shot uses leading lines and negative space — define each in one phrase, and say how each could strengthen the wide establishing shot of a scene.
  4. Balance: a subject placed hard to one side of the frame can feel unbalanced. Name one thing you can put in the empty side to balance it.
  5. Integrative: you are framing an over-the-shoulder shot (Chapter 7) using the rule of thirds (Chapter 6). Where do you put the near shoulder, and where do you put the far subject's eyes?

Put the eyes on (or near) the upper-third line, and leave the extra room in the direction they are *looking* — nose/lead room in front of the face, which for a shot-reverse-shot single means toward the off-screen person. 2. Headroom is the space above the head (too much floats them; too little crops them); lead/nose room is the space in front of a subject's face or motion. A look off-frame or a profile "points" out of the frame, and lead room gives that look somewhere to go so the composition doesn't feel cramped or about to fall off the edge. 3. Leading lines are lines in the scene that draw the eye toward the subject; negative space is empty area around the subject. In a wide establishing shot, leading lines (a counter, a path, a row of tables) can guide the eye to where the action is, and negative space can isolate a subject to show scale or loneliness. 4. Another element of visual weight in the empty side — a secondary subject, a lamp or window, a patch of contrast, or a leading line — so the frame feels balanced rather than lopsided (unless the imbalance is the point). 5. Put the near shoulder in the lower/foreground corner (it frames and anchors one side), and put the far subject's eyes on a third — typically the opposite upper third — with lead room in front of their look, toward the near shoulder / off-screen partner.

What's Next

You can now break a scene into sizes and angles, keep it on one side of the line, cut a conversation together with matched eyelines, and gather the coverage an edit needs. But every shot you have planned so far has been still — the camera locked off, holding its frame. In Chapter 8 the camera starts to move. A pan, a tilt, a push-in, a tracking shot, a handheld drift — each is a sentence, and, like every angle in this chapter, each must be motivated. We will add a slow push-in to the Café Scene — a move onto the reaction we just learned to shoot in close-up — and you will learn when a moving camera serves the story and when a locked-off frame says more. The grammar you just learned does not change when the camera moves; it gains a verb.
