Audio is best learned by listening — on headphones, to your own recordings and to the work of people who built careers on sound. The list below is grouped by purpose. Read a little, then go record a voice close and listen back; the reading only sticks once your ears have done the work. Where a specific edition, page, or quote isn't pinned down here, that's deliberate — treat titles and makers as reliable and any un-cited specific as something to verify yourself.


Start here (the short path)

  1. Do the §14.1 proximity test and this chapter's Production Checkpoint before reading anything — every source below makes more sense with a close-mic recording behind you.

Tools and apps

  • A lavalier microphone (wired, then maybe wireless). The highest-return purchase in all of video. A cheap wired lav with the right adapter (TRRS, USB-C, or lightning) turns a phone into a professional dialogue rig; a budget wireless kit adds movement.   • Closed-back headphones. Not optional — the only honest judge of quality (the meter shows only level). Closed-back cans seal out the room so you hear what the mic hears, not what your ears hear in the space. Use them on every single take. (Tier 1 as a category. Paths: all.)

  • A directional mic (supercardioid or shotgun) and a way to get it close. A boompole, a mic stand with an arm, a cheap painter's pole, or a steady second person — anything that puts the mic just out of frame and near the mouth.   • A meter you can actually read. Whether it's your camera's audio meter, a field recorder's display, or an app, you need to see dBFS to set gain (peaks at -12, never 0). Learn where it lives on your gear before the shoot, not during it. (Paths: all.)

  • A quiet room, for free. The most powerful "tool" in this chapter is the OFF switch on the fridge, the HVAC, and the notifications. Quieting the room beats any mic upgrade — and it costs nothing. (Paths: all.)
