The three dials you now control

Creative white balance: set WB below the real source → image warms (cozy). Set WB above → image cools (clinical/night). Neutral is a choice, not a law.


Making light softer (all enlarge the source; all cost light)

Modifier = anything you attach to/put in front of a light to change quality, shape, spread, or intensity. Softbox = a fabric enclosure that shoots a light through a front diffusion panel with black sides — controllable, contained soft light.

Gels: correction vs creative

Rule: correction gels make sources match (then white-balance for the target); creative gels make motivated color (give it a reason in the world). You cannot paint clean color over a low-CRI source.


CRI (color accuracy — the one flaw you can't grade out)

CRI measures color accuracy; kelvin measures color warmth. A light can be the right color and still render badly. Distrust suspiciously cheap "high-CRI" claims — test on a familiar face.


Mood → ratio (the core creative decision)

Go moodier by subtracting fill (or adding negative fill — a black card), not by dimming everything. Low-key ≠ underexposed: expose the key-lit skin correctly (read the waveform, 🔗 Ch. 5), then let the shadow fall. Add a rim so a low-key subject doesn't dissolve into the dark background.

The craft principles (the "why")

  • Softness is a relationship, not a product — apparent size at the subject. You can make almost any light soft.
  • You light the shadows, not the highlights. Mood is decided by where you let the light fail. (Threshold concept.)
  • Contrast is emotion. High-key = safe; low-key = tension. The eye is wired for it.
  • Color's meaning is relative — warm reads as menace in a cold film. Mood comes from contrast across the piece.
  • Motivate every source (🔗 Ch. 11), including colored ones — give the light a reason in the world.
  • Shoot the mood in-camera; don't plan to paint it in post — deep shadows are unrecoverable (Themes 3 & 5).

The 60-second pre-shoot lighting check

Run this before you roll on any lit setup:

  1. Quality — is my key soft enough for a face (diffused/bounced/close)? Or hard on purpose for character?
  2. Direction — is the key motivated (does it imitate a real source in the room)? Is there a rim so the subject isn't stuck to the background?
  3. Color — is white balance fixed (not auto) and matched to my key? Do any sources fight (mixed color)? Is my light high-CRI?
  4. Ratio — have I chosen a ratio for the mood, and can I read it on the waveform? Is the key-lit skin correctly exposed (not underexposed-as-"moody")?
  5. Comfort & safety — is the key out of my subject's eyes? Any flicker at my shutter/fps? Any gels near hot bulbs?

If you can answer all five out loud, you are lighting on purpose, not by accident.
