Case Study 2: Shoot-Along — Exposing an Outdoor Testimonial in Harsh Midday Sun

This is a from-scratch production walkthrough, not a film analysis. We take one of the book's four recurring setups — the talking head — outdoors into the hardest exposure situation a beginner faces: bright, direct sun. You'll watch the exposure thinking happen in real time: pinning the shutter, reaching for ND to survive the light, judging skin on a scope, and protecting a screaming-bright sky. Every result is rendered as a Described Shot. Shoot your own version alongside it.

The brief and the constraints

A neighborhood bike shop wants a short testimonial for their website and socials: a longtime customer, on camera, saying in about thirty seconds why they keep coming back. The owner wants it to feel outdoors and alive — shot in front of the shop, on the street, in daylight — not in a studio. You are shooting it solo, this afternoon, because that's when the customer is free.

Here is the problem baked into that brief, and it is the exact problem this chapter exists to solve. "This afternoon" means bright, direct, high sun — the harshest, most overexposing light there is. You want the shot to look shot, which means a 180° shutter for natural motion and a wide-ish aperture for a soft, separated background (the busy street behind your subject should melt into pleasant blur, not compete for attention). And the instant you dial in those two creative choices in that much light, your image will be blown out to white. This is the walk-and-ND dance from §5.3, live.

The constraints, written down (as you always should):

  • Setup: talking head (one of our four), outdoors, on the sidewalk in front of the shop.
  • Crew: you, alone. No assistant to hold anything.
  • Gear: one camera (a mirrorless body or a phone — we'll note both paths), one lens or the phone, an ND filter, a small bounce, a lav or shotgun mic, a tripod.
  • Light: whatever the sun is doing at 2 p.m. You did not get to pick golden hour. (When you can pick your light, you will — that's Chapter 13. Today you're stuck with hard sun, and the job is to expose it well anyway.)
  • Deliverable: ~30 seconds, horizontal for the website plus a vertical grab for socials.

The whole case study is about getting a clean, correct, repeatable exposure out of a situation the camera desperately wants to overexpose — and protecting the one highlight (the bright sky) that will try to blow out behind your subject.

Gear and the starting settings

Before touching the camera, you write a starting card. It is a starting point, not a recipe — you will adjust every value against the scope — but starting from a written card means you're never fishing blindly.

Phone path: use a manual/"pro" video app to pin 1/50 s and a low ISO; clip on an ND (fixed or variable); expose to the app's waveform/zebras or histogram; lock AE so the exposure can't drift as the sun ducks behind a cloud.

The single most important line in that box is the ND. Without it, the entire creative plan — cinematic shutter, soft background — is impossible in this light, and you'd be forced to either strobe the motion (fast shutter) or lose the blur (tiny aperture). The ND is what lets you keep both.

The setup: where to stand, where to point

You place the subject and camera before you touch a setting, because where they stand relative to the sun decides how hard your exposure job will be.

  Key idea: put the SUN behind/three-quarters behind the subject (a backlight), not in
  their face. That keeps them from squinting, puts a bright rim on their hair/shoulders,
  and throws the harsh light where you can control the shadow side with a bounce.

Why this arrangement? Point a subject into hard midday sun and two bad things happen: they squint miserably, and the light is ugly and flat on the front of the face. So you turn them so the sun is behind or three-quarters behind them — it becomes a bright rim on the hair and shoulders (which separates them nicely from the blurred street) while their face sits in its own shadow. That shaded face is now soft and squint-free, but it's darker than the sunlit background — which sets up the exact exposure tension we want to practice: a face in shadow against a bright sky and sunlit street. You'll fill the face a little with a bounce (a white card or foldable reflector propped on your bag, since you're solo), and you'll expose for the face while protecting the bright background from clipping. (Shaping daylight like this is the whole of Chapter 13; today we borrow just enough to create a clean exposure problem to solve.)

The shoot, phase by phase

Phase 1 — Pin the foundation, and watch it blow out

You set the camera to the card: 24 fps, 1/50 s, native ISO, f/2.8. No ND yet. You look at the waveform — because in this sun you genuinely cannot judge the tiny screen; it's washed out and useless, which is §5.4's lesson delivered by the weather itself.

   The camera wants to be at f/16 or 1/2000 s to tame this. But both of
   those wreck the plan (deep focus / strobed motion). We need to REMOVE
   light without touching aperture or shutter. That's the ND's whole job.

This is the dead end from §5.1, in the flesh. The image is four-to-six stops too bright. ISO is already at base, so you can't go down. The two "obvious" fixes both cost you the shot: f/16 would pull the whole street into sharp focus and kill your soft background; 1/2000 s would strobe every gesture and passing bike. You do neither. You reach for the ND.

Phase 2 — Dial the ND until the picture returns

You mount the ND (a variable one, so you can fine-tune as clouds come and go) and slowly rotate it while watching the waveform. The trace peels down off the ceiling. You stop when the sky and sunlit background come down out of clipping and the picture reappears.

   Progress: the ND saved the highlights — the sky is now just under 100
   with detail in it. But the shaded face fell to ~40, a little dark. We
   have a classic split: bright background protected, subject underlit.

Notice what the ND bought you: the highlights are protected — the bright sky now sits just under 100 with detail in it instead of a blown white hole — and you did it while keeping f/2.8 and 1/50 s exactly where the plan wanted them. This is the payoff of the entire chapter in one move. But you're not done: turning the sun into a backlight left the face sitting low on the waveform, around 40, a touch underexposed. You have a split-exposure situation, which is the real outdoor challenge and exactly what you came to practice.

Phase 3 — Lift the face without blowing the sky

You have a choice, and the scope makes it clear. You could open the aperture — but you're at f/2.8 and want to stay there for the look, and opening further would start to soften the highlight control. You could raise ISO — but the problem isn't total darkness, it's balance, and ISO would brighten the (already-fine) background too. The right tool is to add light to the face only, which is what the bounce is for.

You angle the white bounce card low and camera-right, catching some of that hard sun and kicking it softly up into the shaded face. You watch the waveform as you tilt it. The face's trace rises.

   NOW it's right: skin in the ~60-70 region, sky protected under 100,
   shadows present but off the floor. Highlights protected, subject clean,
   nothing important clipped or crushed. Lock it.

You cross-check with false color: you point at the face and confirm the skin lands on your camera's "good skin" color, not the over-bright warning color; you glance at the sky and confirm it's not on the "clipping" color. (If you were running zebras instead, you'd have set a 95–100% zebra and confirmed no stripes crawl on the face or across the sky, then maybe a 70% zebra to see it just kiss the cheeks.) Three tools, one answer — which, as §5.4 promised, is what you want: they agree.

A note on Log here. If you shot this in Log (🔗 Ch.3), the flat picture would look even more washed-out on the screen — all the more reason you're on the waveform and false color, not your eyes. You'd place middle grey and the face to your camera's published Log targets, and the extra dynamic range would give the bright sky even more room before clipping. Either way, the discipline is identical: protect the sky, place the skin, judge on the scope.

Phase 4 — Lock it, note it, and shoot for the edit

The exposure is right. Now you make it repeatable, because a testimonial is several takes and maybe a second setup (a wide, a cutaway of the bikes), and every one has to match.

You lock exposure — full manual on the camera, or AE lock on a phone — so a passing cloud can't make the image drift mid-take (auto-exposure breathing is the amateur tell from §5.6). And you write the recipe on your card:

Then you shoot for the edit (Theme 3), thinking about what the cut will need — not just the head-on medium of the testimonial, but a wider shot and a couple of cutaways (hands on the handlebars, the shop sign), all exposed to the same locked recipe so they'll match in post. Here's the money shot as it comes out:

               and outdoors and *made*, not grabbed. Nothing is blown; nothing is muddy.
  THE LESSON   In hard sun, the shot is won by ND (to keep the shutter and aperture you want) and by a scope
               (to protect the highlight and place the skin). The sun was the problem; exposure discipline
               was the answer.

You shoot five takes of the ~30-second testimonial, plus the wide and two cutaways. Because exposure is locked and noted, you never re-fiddle it — you just direct the performance, which is where your attention belongs. Here is one of the cutaways, exposed to the identical locked recipe so it will drop into the edit without a fight:

  THE CUT      Drops in over the sentence "…they fixed my brakes in ten minutes" — picture cuts to the hands
               while the voice keeps running.
  THE EFFECT   The eye follows the words to the exact thing being described; because the exposure matches,
               the cut is invisible.
  THE LESSON   A cutaway is only "free" in the edit if it was exposed to the same locked recipe on set.
               Match the exposure and the cut disappears; let it drift and you buy yourself a repair job.

⚠️ What almost went wrong. Twice during the takes a cloud slid over the sun. On the locked camera, the image simply got a little dimmer for a few seconds and recovered — usable, and easy to match later. Had you left auto-exposure on, the camera would have ramped the brightness up and back down mid-sentence, and that breathing would have been nearly impossible to hide in the cut. Locking exposure turned a weather problem into a non-event. And when you wrapped and stepped inside to grab a shot of the workshop, the very first thing you did was take the ND off — six stops of filter indoors would have sent you straight into the noisy-ISO trap from §5.3.

The edit pass

In the edit, the payoff of a locked, protected exposure shows up as speed. Here's the assembly:

   The audio (the testimonial) runs unbroken; the PICTURE cuts away to the wide and the cutaways
   over it (L-cuts — the sound leads; you'll master these in Chapter 28). Because every shot was
   exposed to the SAME locked recipe, the cutaways match the medium with no correction needed.

Two edit decisions worth naming, both enabled by the exposure work:

  1. The cutaways cut in seamlessly because they were shot to the identical locked exposure. You drop the wide and the hands over the continuing voice and they belong — same brightness, same protected sky, same skin placement. Had exposure wandered between shots, each cutaway would have flashed brighter or darker than the medium, and you'd be hand-matching every one (🔗 that shot-to-shot matching is the core of Chapter 31).
  2. The protected sky grades beautifully. In a light color pass, because the sky was held just under clipping instead of blown to white, you can bring a touch of blue back into it and it reads as a real sky. If it had clipped, there'd be nothing there to grade — just white. Protecting the highlight on set gave the grade something to work with. (🔗 Color is Chapters 31–32.)

✂️ In the Edit: the shoot decided how easy this edit would be. Every good thing about this cut — the matching cutaways, the gradeable sky, the fact that a cloud didn't ruin a take — was decided on set, by ND and a scope and a lock, not rescued in post. That's the chapter's whole thesis made concrete: expose it right and repeatable on the day, and the edit is fast; expose it by eye and let it drift, and the edit is a repair job.

Discussion questions

  1. The single choice that made this whole shoot possible was the ND filter. Walk through what would have happened to (a) the motion and (b) the background if you'd tried to tame the sun with the shutter or the aperture instead. Why was ND the only side-fee-free option?
  2. Turning the subject so the sun became a backlight created a harder exposure problem (a dark face against a bright sky) than pointing them into the sun would have. Argue why the harder problem produced the better-looking shot anyway.
  3. The face landed at ~40 on the waveform after the ND, and you fixed it with a bounce rather than ISO or aperture. Explain why the bounce was the right tool for that specific problem.
  4. "Protect the highlights" drove the exposure of the sky. In concrete terms, what would have been lost — on set and in the grade — if you'd let the sky clip to 100?
  5. Locking exposure turned a passing cloud into a non-event. Describe a situation where you'd want exposure to change during a shot, and how you'd do that on purpose rather than by leaving auto-exposure on.
  6. This shoot used a scope because bright sun made the screen unreadable. Even in comfortable indoor light, why should you still trust the waveform over your (perfectly clear) screen?

Your turn: the hard-sun portrait

Reproduce this shoot with your own subject and gear.

The brief: shoot a 20–30 second outdoor testimonial or piece-to-camera in bright, direct sun, exposed entirely on a scope, with the shutter pinned at a 180° angle and the highlights protected.

Constraints and guidance:

  • Pin the foundation first: your frame rate and a 180° shutter (1/50 s at 24 fps). Do not move the shutter to fix brightness, no matter how bright it gets.
  • Choose an aperture for the look (try f/2.8), then survive the sun with ND — a screw-on/variable filter, or a clip-on for a phone. If you have no ND, this is the exercise where you'll feel its absence: you'll be forced to strobe the motion or lose the background, and that frustration is the lesson.
  • Turn the sun into a backlight and fill the shaded face with a bounce (a white card, a foam board, even a light-colored wall).
  • Expose on a scope, not the screen: bring the skin to the upper-middle of the waveform (~60–70) and hold the bright sky/background just under 100. Confirm with false color or a 95–100% zebra that nothing important clips.
  • Lock it and note it, then shoot the testimonial plus a wide and one cutaway to the same locked recipe. In an editor, lay the cutaway against the medium: do they match without correction? If yes, you've done the whole job.

Show it to one person and ask: "Does this look like it was shot, or grabbed?" If the motion is natural, the background is soft, the face is clean, and the sky isn't a blown white hole, you have beaten the hardest common exposure situation there is — and you did it with a filter and a graph, not a guess.
