Case Study 2: One Person, Five Lenses — A Talking-Head Shoot-Along

This is a from-scratch production walkthrough — an illustrative shoot, constructed to teach, using the book's recurring talking-head setup. No footage is reproduced; every result is rendered as a Described Shot. Follow along and, better, shoot your own version as you read — it is the exact rehearsal for this chapter's Production Checkpoint.

Case Study 1 took apart a famous lens choice. This one builds a shoot from nothing, so you can watch the decisions happen in order. We are going to point a camera at one person telling one short story, and then change only the lens and the aperture — nothing else — and watch the story itself change. Same subject, same room, same words, same light. By the end you will have felt, in concrete frames, why the lens is a storytelling tool and not a zoom level, and you will know how to choose for your own talking-head.

The brief and the constraints

Our subject is a furniture-maker who still builds chairs by hand, and we want a 60-second talking-head for her website in which she says, in her own words, why she refuses to switch to machines. That sentence is the story, and — as always — the story is the boss. Everything we decide about lens and aperture has to answer one question: what should a viewer feel about this person and her work?

The brief already contains a clue most beginners miss. Her story is about the hand-made, about the workshop, about craft you can see. That means the background — the tools on the wall, the wood shavings, the half-built chair — is not clutter to erase. It is evidence. Hold that thought; it will decide our aperture at the end, and it is a perfect example of a technical choice flowing from a story choice rather than from a habit.

The constraints are the ones most readers actually have:

  • One person, one room (her workshop), one afternoon.
  • Available window light plus one lamp — no big lighting package (we are in a lens chapter; lighting is Part III).
  • One camera. We will demonstrate with an interchangeable-lens camera so we can swap focal lengths and apertures freely, and then translate every choice to the phone-only path in the margins, because a phone with two or three lenses can do a smaller version of this entire experiment.

Gear and starting settings

Before touching the lens, we lock the foundation from Chapters 2 and 3 so the only variables in this shoot are focal length and aperture. That discipline — change one thing at a time — is what makes a test tell you anything.

Phone-only translation: lock 4K / 24 fps and a manual exposure if your app allows; use the main and telephoto lenses as your "focal lengths"; use real distance (subject far from the wall) plus portrait mode as your "aperture." Clip on a wired or wireless lav; do not use the built-in mic.

Notice that we deliberately pinned everything the previous chapters taught, so that when the image changes, we know the lens did it. If you change three things at once, a test teaches you nothing.

The setup

Here is the room, top-down, before we choose a lens. This is the frozen diagram language from the style guide: ( S ) is our subject, [CAM] the camera, the window, a practical lamp, ((• the microphone.

The one thing that moves in this whole shoot is the camera's distance, because — as §4.1 hammered — to keep her the same size in the frame at a longer focal length, we must physically back the camera away, and at a wider focal length we must move it in. Her chair, the light, the mic, and the background all stay put. Now we shoot.

Phase 1 — the wide lens, up close (~24mm-equiv)

We start wide and close, the way a rushed beginner (or a webcam) would. To fill the frame with her head and shoulders using a 24mm-equivalent, the camera has to come in close — uncomfortably close, less than a metre from her face.

               vlog energy were the goal.
  THE EFFECT   We're pushed right into her personal space, and the mild face distortion makes her look
               slightly "off." The deep focus keeps the whole room competing for attention.
  THE LESSON   A wide lens forces you close, and closeness distorts faces and flattens intimacy into a
               webcam feel. Wide is for *being in a place*, rarely for a flattering face.

What we adjusted, and why. The client's story is warm and proud, not raw and confessional, so the webcam feel is wrong. And the mild face distortion is actively unflattering — a real problem for a piece meant to make her look like a master of her craft. The wide lens did keep the whole workshop legible, which we like for the story, but it paid for that with an unflattering face and a "video-call" intimacy. We note the win (background legible) and move on to fix the face. (Phone note: this is exactly what happens if you shoot a selfie talking-head on the ultra-wide or main lens held at arm's length — the fix is the same one we're about to make.)

Phase 2 — the normal lens (~50mm-equiv)

We swap to a 50mm-equivalent and back the camera up to about a metre and a half to hold the same head-and-shoulders size. Immediately the face relaxes.

  THE EFFECT   We feel like we're simply *with* her — neither shoved into her face nor watching from afar.
               The neutrality reads as sincerity.
  THE LESSON   The normal lens is the honest lens: it renders a face as the eye sees it. When you want a
               viewer to simply believe someone, ~50mm-equiv is home.

What we adjusted, and why. This is a real contender. The 50mm look is sincere and undistorted, and it keeps enough of the workshop to serve the story. If we had to deliver in the next ten minutes, we could ship this. But the brief wants her to feel like a master — a touch elevated, a touch separated from the ordinary — and the normal lens is perhaps too plain for that. So we go one step longer to see if flattery and separation lift the piece. (Phone note: on a phone, the telephoto lens is your closest equivalent to this and the next step — switch to it and back up.)

Phase 3 — the short telephoto (~85mm-equiv)

We mount an 85mm-equivalent and back the camera up to roughly two and a half metres. This is the classic portrait and interview range, and you can see instantly why.

               compressed in the flattering way — the face looks refined, sculpted, a little idealised. The
               background has begun to compress and soften even before we touch the aperture: the tool wall
               reads as pleasant texture rather than busy detail.
  THE MOVE     Locked off.
  THE LIGHT    Unchanged; from farther back the light is at its most flattering.
  THE SOUND    Clean lav.
  THE CUT      Reads as "premium interview." This is what a polished brand piece or documentary interview
               looks like.
  THE EFFECT   She is lifted subtly above the ordinary — separated from the room, presented. The distance
               reads, paradoxically, as respect: we regard her rather than crowd her.
  THE LESSON   Short telephoto flatters faces and begins to separate the subject from the background before
               aperture even enters the picture. It's the default interview lens for a reason.

The focal-length decision. Three looks, one subject. The wide was unflattering and webcam-ish; the normal was honest but plain; the short telephoto flattered her and started to lift her off the room. For a piece meant to present a master of her craft, the 85mm-equivalent wins. We have chosen our focal length the right way — by feeling, not by habit — and we can say why in one sentence: we went to short telephoto to flatter her face and gently separate her from the workshop, presenting her as the skilled maker the story claims she is. That is a defensible choice, which is the only kind worth making.

🔄 Check the thinking so far. Before aperture: notice that we did not pick the lens that showed the "most background blur" or the one that was "sharpest." We picked the one whose perspective — the way it renders a face and the space around it — matched the story's claim about the person. The look served the sentence. Hold that discipline into the next decision, which is the tempting one.

Phase 4 — the aperture ladder

Now, at our chosen 85mm-equivalent from 2.5 m, we change only the aperture and watch the background dissolve. This is where beginners lose their heads and open all the way, so we will make the decision the way the story demands.

  As we OPEN UP (toward f/2), the workshop disappears; as we STOP DOWN (toward f/8), it returns.

Let us render the two extremes as Described Shots, because the difference is the whole lesson of §4.3.

  THE LESSON   Wide open isolates the subject completely and reads as premium — but it *throws away the
               background entirely*, which is only right if the background doesn't matter.

  THE EFFECT   The story is *proven* by the background: we don't just hear that she works by hand, we see
               the hand tools. The room corroborates her words.
  THE LESSON   Stopping down keeps the context that some stories *need*. Background separation is a story
               decision, not a quality setting.

The aperture decision — and why the "prettier" one loses. The f/2 shot is objectively the more beautiful frame. It is also wrong for this story. Her entire point is that she works by hand, and the wide-open version erases the very tools that prove it — it makes a gorgeous portrait of a person who could be talking about anything. The f/8 version is less flashy but it corroborates her words: we see the hand tools, the shavings, the unfinished chair. So we land in the middle, at about f/4: enough separation to lift her off the wall and keep her the clear subject, enough depth to keep the workshop readable as evidence. We can, again, say why in one sentence: we stopped down to f/4 so the tools stay legible, because the background is the proof of her story — but not so far that the room competes with her face.

That decision — choosing the less pretty aperture because the story needs the background — is the entire chapter growing up. A beginner shoots the prettiest frame; a maker shoots the frame that serves the sentence.

🎒 Gear Note: what if you have only one lens (or a fixed phone)? Most of this experiment still works, because the two most powerful levers cost nothing. Even locked to a single focal length, you can change the feel by changing your distance — step back to compress and flatter, step in for immediacy — and you can change the background's presence by changing the subject-to-background distance: sit the subject far from the wall and the background softens even at a modest aperture; sit them against it and everything stays sharp. If your phone can't set an aperture, "portrait mode on vs off, plus a version with the subject pulled well away from the wall" is your entire aperture ladder, and it teaches the same lesson: separation is a story choice you can make with your feet and your staging, not just a ring on a lens. The furniture-maker's whole look is reachable on a phone — main lens, subject a few steps off the tool wall, shot from across the workshop.

The edit pass

We shot far more than we need — three focal lengths, a three-stop aperture ladder — which is exactly right for a test. The edit is where we prove our choice and cut it into the piece. Here is the timeline for the finished 60 seconds, using the frozen edit-timeline language (video track above audio).

  Notes: the whole piece lives on the 85mm f/4 look. The one insert — a close-up of her hands working —
  is shot even shallower (f/2.2) so the *tool* pops against a melted background, contrasting with the
  deeper f/4 of her talking head. Two apertures, two jobs: f/4 to keep her IN the workshop, f/2.2 to
  ISOLATE the hands. The lens is doing the editing's pointing for us.

Three cut decisions are worth naming, because each is a lens choice paying off in post:

  • The look is consistent. Because we chose one focal length and aperture for the interview and stuck to it, every talking-head shot matches, and the piece feels authored rather than assembled from whatever was lying around. Consistency is a decision made on set.
  • The insert uses a different aperture on purpose. Her hands, cut in on the word "hand," are shot wide open (f/2.2) so the plane of a chisel or a curl of wood is sharp against pure soft colour. The shift from the interview's f/4 to the insert's f/2.2 is not an accident — it tells the eye "look here, at the craft." Aperture is pointing again.
  • Nothing needed to be "fixed" that couldn't be. Because we decided depth of field on set (§4.3 ✂️), the editor never wished a background were softer or a face sharper. The focus was authored, not repaired — which is the only way focus can be handled, since post cannot refocus a soft shot.

✂️ In the Edit: the test is the pre-production. This whole shoot-along looks like a lot of shooting, but every alternate take is cheap insurance bought before the edit. Because we laddered focal length and aperture deliberately, the edit was a matter of choosing, not hoping — and we can hand the client the winning look with a one-sentence reason. That is "fix it in pre, not in post" in its purest form: an hour of testing bought a stress-free edit and a defensible result.

One more thing the edit revealed, and it is a lesson you only learn by shooting the ladder: the choice we made on set is the only choice we could have made. Nothing in the timeline let us "add more separation" to a shot that wasn't separated enough, or "recover the tools" from a shot that erased them. Every alternate we needed had to already exist as a real take. If we had shot only the pretty f/2 version and the client had later said "I love it, but can we see the workshop?", the answer would have been "we have to reshoot" — an expensive sentence that a five-minute aperture ladder made impossible to ever hear. The test did not just find the best look; it guaranteed we had the look the story turned out to need.

Discussion questions

  1. We chose the short telephoto over the (perfectly good) normal lens for a story about mastery. Was that the right call, or over-thinking? When would the plain, honest 50mm be the better storytelling choice?
  2. The f/2 shot was the most beautiful and we rejected it. Restate, in your own words, the story reason. Can you think of a talking-head where erasing the background completely would be exactly right?
  3. The finished piece uses f/4 for the interview but f/2.2 for the hands insert. Why deliberately change aperture between shots in the same piece? What is each aperture for?
  4. We locked resolution, frame rate, shutter, light, and audio before touching the lens. Why does changing only one variable at a time matter in a test — and what would we have learned if we'd changed three things at once?
  5. Everything here was demonstrated on an interchangeable-lens camera and translated to a phone. Where does the phone version get closest to this result, and where does it hit a real wall — and how would you work around that wall?

Your turn: your own five-lens talking-head

This is the rehearsal for your Production Checkpoint, so do it for real with your Project 1 subject (even if that's you in a mirror-propped phone).

The brief: shoot one person saying one true sentence about themselves, at (at least) two focal lengths and three apertures, changing nothing else. Then choose the look that serves the story and cut a 30–60 second piece on that single look, with one insert at a different aperture.

Constraints and guidance:

  • Lock everything but the lens. Resolution, frame rate, shutter, light, mic — set once, don't touch. Change only focal length and aperture, one at a time.
  • Keep the subject the same size at each focal length by moving the camera, so the only thing changing is the background's behaviour.
  • Choose by story, not by prettiness. Before you shoot, write the one sentence your piece is about, and the one sentence for why the focal length and aperture you pick serve it. If you can't defend the choice, you haven't made one.
  • Ladder the aperture (wide open, middle, stopped down) and decide how much background the story wants — erased, suggested, or shown.
  • Cut one insert at a different aperture to point the eye at a detail, the way the hands were isolated here.

Show the finished piece to one person and ask: "What do you think this person is like, and how do you know?" If their answer matches what you were going for, your lens choices told the story — which is the whole job.
