Chapter 13: Natural and Available Light
Overview
Walk into any room with a working shooter and watch their eyes before their hands. They are not looking for a place to plug in a light. They are reading the light that is already there — which way it falls, whether it is hard or soft, what color it is, where the shadows land — and deciding where to stand a person so that free light does the work. Most of the best-looking video ever made was lit by sources nobody paid for: a window, a cloudy sky, the sun an hour before it set. The two previous chapters gave you the grammar of light — a key, a fill, a rim, hard versus soft, color temperature, ratios (Chapters 11 and 12). This chapter teaches you to find all of that already happening in the world and bend it to your story, which is the single most transferable lighting skill there is.
Here is why it matters more than any light you could buy. A light kit only works where you can set it up, power it, and carry it. Daylight is everywhere, it is free, and it is often better than what you would build — a north window is a softbox the size of a wall, and golden hour is a warm key ninety-three million miles away that never needs a stand. The shooter who can read available light can walk into an unfamiliar café, a borrowed office, a parking lot, or a field, and in thirty seconds know exactly where to put the subject. That reading is a skill, not a talent, and by the end of this chapter you will have it.
This is also the most phone-and-window-friendly chapter in the book. Every technique here can be done with the camera in your pocket, a person, and a piece of white card. There is nothing to buy. If you have skipped ahead worried that "real lighting" requires a kit, start here: this is lighting for everyone, using what is already in the room.

13.1 Reading available light: direction and quality
Before you shape light, you have to see it — and seeing light is a learned skill that beginners simply do not have yet and professionals cannot turn off. Available light is whatever light already exists in a location: the sun, the sky, light through windows, the lamps and overheads someone else installed. Your first job on any location is not to add or move anything. It is to read what is there. You are answering three questions, in this order: which way is the light traveling, how hard or soft is it, and what color is it?
Direction first, because direction is shape. A face lit from the front, with the light right beside the lens, looks flat — every shadow falls directly behind the nose and ears where the camera cannot see it, so the face loses its contours. The same face lit from the side gains a bright cheek and a shadowed cheek, and suddenly it has structure, depth, a sense of a real skull under the skin. Slide the light around to roughly forty-five degrees off the lens and slightly above eye level and you get the position portrait painters have used for centuries: a lit side, a shadowed side, and a small triangle of light on the shadow cheek. Keep going until the light is behind the subject and you get a rim of brightness on their hair and shoulders and a face in shadow — separation, mood, or silhouette. Light from directly above (the noon sun, an office ceiling) drops the eyes into dark sockets and puts a hard shadow under the nose and chin — the least flattering direction there is. None of this is new; it is exactly the key-light logic of Chapter 11 (§11.2), except now you did not place the light. You have to find the direction the room already offers and put the subject into it.

Read the room, then move the SUBJECT into the direction that gives the face shape.
The diagram is a compass you carry in your head. On location you mentally stand the subject at the center and ask where the brightest source is relative to where the camera will be. If the answer is "flat front" or "straight top," you move the subject — turn them, walk them to a different spot, seat them beside the window instead of under the ceiling light — until the source lands somewhere between side and forty-five degrees. You almost never move the sun or the window. You move the person and the camera. That is the entire physical craft of available light: choosing your position relative to a source you cannot control.
Quality second: hard or soft. You met this in Chapters 11 and 12 — hard light comes from a small or distant source and throws sharp-edged, high-contrast shadows; soft light comes from a large, near source and wraps around the subject with soft-edged, gentle shadows. Outdoors, the single fact that decides quality is whether the sun is bare or diffused. A clear-sky sun is small and ninety-three million miles away, so it is effectively a hard light — squinting, harsh, black-edged shadows. Put a cloud in front of it and the entire sky lights up and becomes the source: enormous, soft, shadowless. Indoors, a window is large relative to a face standing near it, so window light is soft; the same window from across a big room is relatively small and goes harder. You are not measuring anything. You are looking at the edge of a shadow: crisp edge means hard, feathered edge means soft.
🚪 Threshold Concept: you don't control the light — you control your position relative to it. A beginner sees bad light and feels stuck: "the light here is ugly." A shooter sees the same light and moves — turns the subject a quarter turn toward the window, steps them into the shade at the edge of the building, waits twenty minutes for the sun to drop. The sun, the sky, and the window are fixed. Your subject, your camera, and a piece of white card are not. Once you truly internalize that available-light shooting is positioning, not lighting, every location becomes workable, because there is almost always a good place to stand in it — you just have to find it.
💡 Why It Works. Direction gives a face shape; quality decides how harshly that shape is drawn; color sets the mood. Those three variables — the same ones you controlled deliberately with a lamp in Chapter 11 — are all present in free light, already set by the weather and the time of day. Reading them is just deliberate looking. And because you are choosing among conditions the world hands you rather than dialing them yourself, the answer is always a position: where to stand the person so the free light lands the way the story wants.
We will come back to color continuously — daylight is cool, golden hour is warm, shade is bluish — but color is white-balance territory (Chapter 12, §12.3), and the one move you must make on every natural-light shoot is to set white balance manually to match your key source rather than let the camera guess. A camera left on auto white balance will "correct away" the warmth of golden hour and hunt shot to shot under mixed light, wrecking your ability to match in the edit. Read the color, name it in kelvin, set it, and lock it.

A subject stands under a bright office ceiling and their eyes are two dark holes. What single change fixes it fastest, and why? 3. The sun is out on a cloudless day. Is that light hard or soft, and how can you tell from a shadow?

- Direction (which way it travels — front/side/45°/back/top), quality (hard or soft), and color (its temperature in kelvin). Direction first, because direction is shape.
- Move the subject out from under the top light and over toward a side source such as a window, so the light comes from the side rather than straight down — top light drops the eyes into shadow; side light gives the face shape and puts light back in the eyes.
- Hard. A bare sun is a small, distant source, so it throws sharp, crisp-edged shadows; you can read hardness directly off the edge of any shadow — crisp means hard, feathered means soft.
13.2 Window light: the free softbox
If this book could give you only one lighting tool, it would be a window. Window light is daylight entering through a window, which behaves as a large, soft, directional source — a softbox you did not buy, powered by the sky, already installed in nearly every room you will ever shoot in. Cinematographers have leaned on it for a century, and the reason interviews so often happen near a window is not coincidence: it is the fastest way to put beautiful light on a face.
Why does it work so well? Two of the qualities you learned to prize in Chapters 11 and 12 come free. It is soft, because a window is physically large and your subject stands close to it, so relative to their face the source is huge — soft, wrapping light with gentle shadow edges that flatter skin (Chapter 12, §12.1, made the size-and-distance argument). And it is directional, because it comes from one wall, one side — so it gives the face shape, a lit cheek and a shadowed cheek, exactly the modeling a key light is supposed to provide (§11.2). Soft and directional is the combination a portrait photographer pays hundreds of dollars of modifiers to build. A window hands it to you.
Not every window is equal, and reading the difference is part of the craft. A window that never sees direct sun — a north-facing window in the northern hemisphere (south-facing below the equator) — delivers soft, indirect, blue-ish skylight that stays consistent all day; painters built entire studios around north light for exactly this reason. A window the sun shines directly through gives you a hard, bright, moving shaft that changes by the minute and throws a sharp window-frame shadow across the room. That harder light is not useless, but if you want the soft look, you diffuse it: tape a sheet of tracing paper or baking parchment over the glass, hang a sheer white curtain, or wait for a cloud — any of which turns the whole window into one soft panel (this is diffusion, from §12.2, applied to a free source).
Now the positioning, which is where beginners go wrong. Do not sit your subject facing the window with the camera behind them — you will get a lovely lit wall and a silhouetted face. Do not sit them with the window behind them either, for the same reason in reverse (the classic backlit-silhouette mistake). Sit them beside the window, turned so the light rakes across them from the side or from about forty-five degrees. The window becomes a side or three-quarter key; the wall of the room opposite the window throws a little light back as a natural fill.

Distance to the window sets the mood: close = brighter, softer, faster falloff
(more contrast across the face); farther = dimmer but more even side-to-side.
Two dials control the look, and neither costs anything. The first is angle: the more you turn the subject to face the window, the more evenly both cheeks are lit (lower contrast, "beauty" light); the more you turn them away from it toward the room, the deeper the shadow side falls (higher contrast, moodier). The second is distance to the glass: light falls off fast near a window (the inverse-square falloff you met with exposure — brightness drops sharply as distance grows), so a subject standing right at the window has a bright near-cheek and a much darker far-cheek — dramatic, high-contrast. Walk them a few feet back into the room and the light becomes more even across the face, gentler, though dimmer overall. You are not adjusting a lamp; you are adjusting where the person stands, and getting every bit as much control.

THE EFFECT The soft side key gives the face real shape without a hard shadow anywhere; the eye goes
straight to the lit cheek and the catchlight in the near eye. It reads as "professional"
and nobody can say why — the why is a window used on purpose.
THE LESSON A window beside the subject, a 45° turn, and one bounce is a complete key-and-fill setup.
You already own it.
The Café Scene, now with the window as the natural key. In Chapter 11 you lit the café interior and treated the big window as your motivated key — the room's brightest, most believable source (§11.5). Return to it now and look at the daylight quality coming through that glass. Recall the locked geography: the window is the room's key source; in the establishing wide it reads camera-right, behind the counter, and warm practical lamps hang over the counter. When your subject sits by that window and you shoot the reverse toward the counter, the window naturally falls camera-left across their face — a correct reverse angle, not a broken one (screen direction, §9.2). That daylight is soft because the window is large and your subject is right beside it; it is a little cool against the warm counter lamps; and it changes as clouds pass. The café did not install a softbox. The weather did. Your job is to seat the person in the good light the room already has and expose for their face — the same instinct whether the room is a café, an office, or a kitchen.
⚠️ Common Mistake: shooting into the window. The reflex is to point the camera at the bright, pretty window — which puts your subject between the lens and the light and turns their face into a shadow. The camera, trying to expose the bright window, drives the face darker still. The fix is a quarter turn of the whole setup: put the window to the side, expose for the face, and let the window fall wherever it falls (often pleasantly blown-out behind, which is fine). If you must keep the window in the background, you will need to add light on the subject to compete with it — but the easy win is simply to stop shooting into it.
✂️ In the Edit. Window light is free but it is not stable — a cloud crossing the sun can change your exposure and even your color by a stop or more between takes, and the sun itself crawls across the sky as you work. The editor and colorist inherit that drift: two interview answers shot twenty minutes apart may not match, and matching them later is real work (Chapter 31, §31.5). So shoot your coverage close together in time, lock your exposure and white balance manually rather than leaving them on auto, and glance at the window between takes — if the light jumped, either wait for it to come back or re-shoot the surrounding lines. This is fix it in pre, not in post applied to weather: the cheapest place to solve a matching problem is on the day, by not creating it.
🎬 On Set: the window portrait, five turns. Seat a person (or yourself) beside the largest window you have, camera on something steady. Shoot the same ten seconds of them talking five times, changing only their angle to the glass: (1) facing the window, (2) 45° toward it, (3) profile to it, (4) 45° away from it, (5) nearly backed to it. Constraint: do not move the camera or add any light. Self-review: watch all five and pick the one where the face has the most pleasing shape without losing the shadowed eye — then say, in one sentence, what the angle did. Keep the winner; it is a candidate for Project 1.
13.3 Golden hour and the sun as a key
There is a reason so many films and ads seem to take place in the same warm, glowing light: they were shot at golden hour, the roughly one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset when the sun sits low on the horizon and its light turns warm, soft-edged, and directional — the most flattering natural light there is for faces and landscapes. (Photographers also say magic hour, which loosely stretches to the brief glow just after the sun dips below the horizon.) When the whole internet agrees a piece of footage looks "cinematic," golden hour is doing a great deal of the work.
Why is low sun so much kinder than high sun? Three things change at once. First, color: near the horizon, sunlight travels through far more atmosphere, which scatters away the blue and leaves warm orange-gold light — a low color temperature, roughly 3000–4000K, versus the neutral ~5500K of midday (Chapter 12, §12.3). Second, direction: a low sun comes from the side, so it gives faces shape and casts long, elegant shadows, instead of the top-down light of noon that buries the eyes. Third, quality: haze and atmosphere near the horizon soften the sun's edge somewhat, so its shadows are a little gentler than the razor shadows of midday. Warm, side-on, and softened — the sun spends two windows a day doing an impression of an expensive lamp, for free.
You can use that low sun in three distinct roles, and choosing among them is a story decision:
- As a side key. Put the sun roughly forty-five degrees off the lens and let it rake warm light across the subject's face. This is the classic warm portrait — a lit cheek, a shadowed cheek, gold on the skin. The catch is that a low sun in the face makes people squint, so this works best when the subject is not looking straight into it.
- As a backlight or rim. Turn the subject so the sun is behind them. Now it edges their hair and shoulders with a bright golden rim and separates them from the background — a halo of light — while their face is in soft shade. This is the most beloved golden-hour look, and it solves the squint problem entirely. You then expose for the face and let the background glow, or bounce light back into the face (next section).
- As a background glow. Point the sun into the lens at the edge of the frame for lens flare and a hazy, dreamlike wash. Used with restraint it is gorgeous; overused it is a cliché. Motivate it (§11.5 logic: is there a reason this moment glows?) and it earns its place.

The low sun is a free backlight. The bounce is your free fill. That is a two-source setup, bought nothing.
The one thing golden hour demands in return is speed. This light is not just brief — it is moving and changing the entire time you shoot it. In the last twenty minutes before sunset the sun drops visibly, the color warms further, the exposure falls, and then it is gone. You realistically get twenty to forty usable minutes, and they are not stable minutes. So golden hour rewards planning the way no other natural light does: scout the location in advance and know exactly where the sun will set (a sun-position or ephemeris app on your phone will show you the angle for any date and place); set up and rehearse before the light arrives; shoot your single most important shot first, while the light is best and you still have time to repeat it; and keep moving. Amateurs arrive at golden hour and start figuring things out; by the time they are ready, it is blue twilight. Professionals treat the good light as a resource they are spending down to zero, and they spend it fast.

You show up at the most beautiful light of the day, and your camera — trying to be helpful — "corrects" the warm cast back toward neutral, throwing away the exact quality you drove across town for. Set white balance manually (around 5600K/daylight) so the camera records the warmth as warmth. The second version of this mistake is arriving late: the golden window is short and unforgiving, so treat the posted sunset time as your deadline, not your call time — be set up and rolling a full hour before it.
🔬 The Tech: the color temperature of daylight across a day. Skippable, but useful once. Daylight is not one color; it swings across the day in a predictable arc measured in kelvin (Chapter 12, §12.3). Roughly: pre-dawn "blue hour" is very cool (~10,000K+, deep blue); sunrise and sunset golden hour are warm (~3000–4000K); an hour after sunrise through late afternoon is near neutral "daylight" (~5000–6500K); and open shade or an overcast midday is cool again (~7000–8000K), because the subject is lit by blue skylight rather than the yellow sun. This is why the same white-balance setting makes a face look warm at sunset and blue in the shade — the light genuinely changed color. Knowing the arc lets you predict the color you will get before you arrive, and set white balance for the look you want rather than chasing it.

13.4 Overcast, open shade, and diffused daylight
New shooters groan when the sky goes grey. They have it exactly backwards. Overcast (diffused daylight) is sunlight scattered by cloud so that the entire sky becomes one enormous, soft, nearly shadowless source — the biggest softbox in existence, hung directly over your location and switched on all day. For faces, it is often the most forgiving light you will ever get: soft, even, kind to skin, with none of the harsh shadows and squinting of a bare sun, and — crucially — consistent, because there is no sharp sun to crawl across the sky and ruin your matching. A cloudy day is not a problem to survive. It is a giant, free beauty light.
Its cousin, available on any sunny day, is open shade: an outdoor area shielded from direct sun but still open to the bright sky — the shadow side of a building, a spot under an overhang or an awning, a doorway, the shade of a wide tree. In open shade your subject is lit not by the harsh direct sun but by the huge, soft dome of skylight, so you get soft, even, flattering light in the middle of a brutal sunny afternoon simply by stepping ten feet sideways into the shadow. When the noon sun is unusable, open shade is the answer, and it is always nearby.
Both are soft and both are lovely, but both have the same two flaws, and knowing the fixes is what turns "nice" into "shot on purpose."
The first flaw is flatness. Light coming more or less equally from the whole sky wraps a face so completely that it can lose all shape — no bright side, no shadow side, a slightly dull, dimensionless look. The fix is to reintroduce direction. Find the edge of the shade — stand your subject at the mouth of an alley, just inside a doorway, or under the lip of an overhang — so that more light reaches them from the open side than from the covered side. Now the soft light has a direction again: a gently brighter cheek and a gently shadowed one. You have turned an omnidirectional source into a big soft side key without touching a thing, just by choosing where at the edge of the shade to stand.
The second flaw is that overcast and shade light both come mostly from above (the sky is overhead) and both are cool in color. Top-heavy light drops the eyes into slight shadow — the same raccoon-eye problem as noon sun, gentler. The fix is a bounce down low, kicking sky light back up into the eye sockets (next section). And the cool color — open shade can run 7000–8000K blue, because the subject is lit by blue skylight, not the yellow sun — will render faces faintly corpse-blue unless you set white balance for shade (the "shade" or "cloudy" preset, or manually around 7000K), which warms the image back to neutral (Chapter 12, §12.3).

Stand the subject at the EDGE of the shade, facing the open sky: the skylight becomes a big soft
side key with real direction, and the wall behind kills spill from the shadow side. Set WB for shade (~7000K).
💡 Why It Works: the bigger the source, the softer the light. Everything in this section is one principle from Chapter 12 (§12.1) scaled up to the sky. Softness is about the size of the source relative to the subject. A bare bulb is tiny and hard. A softbox is bigger and softer. A window is bigger still. An overcast sky is the largest source you will ever shoot under — it is, quite literally, a softbox the size of the visible heavens — which is exactly why its light is so soft that it casts almost no shadow at all. Once you see overcast as "the ultimate softbox," you stop mourning the sun and start using the cloud.
⚠️ Common Mistake: blue faces and dead eyes in the shade. Two errors travel together in open shade. First, leaving white balance on a daylight setting so the cool skylight renders skin blue and sickly — fix it by setting the shade/cloudy white balance (or ~7000K). Second, standing the subject deep under an overhang where the only light is the top-down sky, so their eye sockets go dark — fix it by moving them to the edge of the shade facing the open sky and popping a low bounce to fill the eyes. Do both and open shade becomes some of the best portrait light available anywhere.
🎬 On Set: overcast beauty, with and without direction. On the next grey or bright day, shoot a person's face three ways with no purchased light: (1) in the middle of open ground or deep shade (flat, omnidirectional); (2) at the edge of a building's shade, facing the open sky (directional soft key); (3) the same as (2) with a white card held low to lift the eyes. Constraint: set white balance for shade on all three; change nothing else. Self-review: line them up and name what "direction" and "a bounce" each added. This is a controlled proof that position is lighting.

- White balance is set too cool for the conditions — open shade is lit by blue skylight (~7000–8000K), so a daylight setting renders skin blue. Set the shade/cloudy white balance (or manually ~7000K) to warm it back to neutral.
13.5 Bounce, flags, and negative fill outdoors
So far you have been choosing light — where to stand a person relative to a window or the sun. Now you shape it, and outdoors you shape it with two opposite moves: adding light back with a bounce, and subtracting light with a flag. Neither requires power or purchase, and together they turn "found" light into "designed" light.
A bounce (reflector) is any surface used to redirect existing light back into the shadows to fill them — a piece of white foamcore, a collapsible fold-up reflector, a sheet of card, a light-colored wall, a sandy beach, fresh snow, even a white T-shirt in a pinch. It is a fill light (§11.3) that you did not plug in: you catch some of the key — the sun, the window, the sky — and throw it into the shadow side of the subject to open up the detail there. The surface changes the character of the fill. A white surface gives soft, neutral, gentle fill. A silver surface gives a brighter, more specular, slightly cooler kick (useful when the key is strong and far). A gold surface gives a warm fill, handy for pushing a sunset feeling or warming a subject in cool shade. On a golden-hour backlit portrait (§13.3), the bounce is your key — the sun rims from behind, and a white or silver card in front, held low and close, throws soft light back up into the face. That is a complete two-source portrait built from the sun and a piece of card.
But outdoors your problem is frequently the opposite of too little light. On an overcast day or in open shade, the light is already soft and everywhere — the face has plenty of fill and therefore no shape. Adding more light is not the answer. Removing some is. This is where two subtractive tools come in. A flag is any opaque, dark surface used to block or cut light off a part of the scene — a black card, a piece of black foamcore, a black cloth on a stand, or your own body. And negative fill is the specific technique of placing a black or dark surface close to the shadow side of the subject to absorb the ambient light bouncing around there, deepening that shadow and restoring contrast and shape. In flat overcast light, standing a black card just off the subject's shadow cheek pulls that side down half a stop to a stop and suddenly the face has modeling again — you added shape by taking light away. Subtractive lighting is the move beginners never think of and professionals reach for constantly, because so much of outdoor light is already too flat and too much.

Under harsh sun, add diffusion overhead to soften the key first, then bounce to fill.
Put the whole kit together and you can tame the worst outdoor light there is — harsh midday sun. The sun is your hard key; you soften it by holding a diffusion frame (a "silk," or even a bedsheet on a frame — §12.2) between the sun and the subject to turn the hard key soft; you bounce a card into the shadow side to open it up; and if the light is still flat, you flag the opposite side with negative fill to bring back contrast. Three cheap surfaces — one translucent, one white, one black — and you have full control of contrast on a face in a parking lot at noon. Measure the result by eye or, better, by the shadow-side reading: a fill that sits about one to two stops under the key looks natural; a negative fill that deepens the shadow by half a stop to a stop restores shape without going murky. You are working in stops of fill — the language of Chapter 5 — but your lights are pieces of board.
🎒 Gear Note: your first reflector kit costs nothing. The principle is a surface that adds light (white/silver) and a surface that removes it (black); the object does not matter. A sheet of white foamcore from a craft store is a superb, rigid bounce. A car windshield sun-shade is often silver on one side and works beautifully. A collapsible 5-in-1 reflector (white/silver/gold/black/diffusion in one folding disc) is inexpensive and packs the entire kit above into a bag — the one "real" purchase worth making, and even it is optional. Black foamcore, a black jacket, or a dark umbrella is your negative fill. A white bedsheet on any frame is your diffusion. 📱 Phone shooters: a friend holding a piece of white card just out of frame is a fill light, full stop — no accessory, no app. The move, not the money, is the craft.
✂️ In the Edit. Bounces and flags create fill that the colorist assumes is consistent — so keep them consistent across a scene. If a helper holds the bounce at one angle for the wide and a different angle for the close-up, the fill level and even the color of the shadow side will jump between shots, and matching them in the grade (Chapter 31, §31.5) is fiddly, sometimes impossible. Tape a mark for the reflector's position, keep the same side (silver vs white) throughout a scene, and shoot your coverage before the sun moves far. The habit is the same one as always: make the pieces match on set, so the edit is assembly and not repair.
🎬 On Set: four versions of a face in hard sun. Find harsh, direct sun and one willing subject. Shoot the same framing four times: (1) raw, sun as-is (see how ugly hard top-ish sun can be); (2) add diffusion overhead (a sheet, a silk, a friend holding a translucent umbrella) to soften the key; (3) add a white bounce into the shadow side; (4) add negative fill (a black card) on the opposite side to restore contrast. Constraint: lock exposure and white balance; change only the shaping tool. Self-review: rank the four and write which single tool made the biggest difference — for most faces it is the diffusion, and that surprises people.

- Subtract. The overcast light is already soft and everywhere, so the face has too much fill and no shape; place a black flag / negative fill near the shadow side to deepen it and bring back modeling.
- Diffuse the hard sun first (a silk/sheet overhead turns the hard key soft), then bounce a white card into the shadow side to fill it, then — if it is still too flat — flag the opposite side with negative fill to restore contrast.
13.6 Mixed light and how to handle it
The last problem of this chapter is the one waiting in almost every real room, and it is the one that quietly wrecks beginners' footage without their ever knowing why. Mixed light is a scene lit by two or more sources of different color temperature at once — most commonly cool daylight from a window meeting the warm tungsten or LED glow of the lamps and overheads someone already installed — a situation no single white-balance setting can neutralize. It is the technical heart of the Café Scene, and once you can see it, you will see it everywhere: offices, kitchens, bars, shops, living rooms. The world is full of mixed light.
Here is why it is a trap. White balance (Chapter 12, §12.3) sets one reference for "white" — one color the camera treats as neutral. If you balance for the cool daylight from the window (~5600K), the warm tungsten lamps (~2800K) go strongly orange. If instead you balance for the tungsten lamps, the window light swings hard blue. There is no single number that neutralizes both, because they are genuinely different colors of light hitting the same face. Leave the camera on auto white balance and it does the worst thing of all: it hunts, picking a different compromise every time the framing changes, so your shots will not even match each other. Skin under a mix of daylight and fluorescent can also drift an unhealthy green. Mixed light left unmanaged is how "I don't know, it just looks off" happens.
You have four honest options, and choosing among them is a craft decision, not a technical one:
- Kill one source. The simplest fix: eliminate the conflict. Turn off the warm room lamps and shoot pure daylight, or close the blind and shoot pure tungsten. Now there is one color of light and white balance can neutralize it cleanly. You lose a source but gain consistency — often the right trade for a clean interview.
- Match the sources. Make the two lights the same color. Gel the warm practicals up to daylight with a blue (CTB) gel, or gel the window down to tungsten with an orange (CTO) gel — the gels of §12.4 — or simply swap the room's bulbs for daylight-balanced ones. Now everything is one temperature and white balance handles it. This is the professional's move when both sources must stay in the shot.
- Embrace it, motivated. Often the most beautiful and naturalistic choice: let the mix exist, on purpose. Balance for your key — usually the window daylight — and let the warm practicals read as warm pools of amber in the frame. Because we expect lamps to be warm and daylight to be cool, the contrast reads as real, cozy, filmic (this is motivated light from §11.5: the warm glow is justified by a lamp we can see). You are not fixing the mix; you are composing with it.
- Split the difference, then finish in post. Set white balance to a middle value and plan to correct the residual cast in the grade (Chapter 31, §31.3). This is a partial answer and the least reliable — better to commit on set — but it is a real tool when you cannot touch the sources.

cozy café. The mix is not a mistake — it is the whole mood.
THE LESSON When two colors of light are motivated (window = daylight, lamps = lamps), balance for the
key and let the rest be warm. Embraced mixed light is one of the most naturalistic looks there is.
Notice what this does for the Café Scene as a whole. In Chapter 11 you lit that interior and named the window your motivated key; here you have looked harder at the daylight through it and at the warm counter lamps beside it, and recognized the room for what it is — a mixed-light scene — and made the deliberate choice to embrace the mix, balancing for the window and letting the lamps glow. Nothing in the café changed. Your command of it did. That is the returning promise of this anchor, and it is why we keep coming back to the same ordinary room: each chapter you can see more in it, and therefore do more with it.
⚠️ Common Mistake: auto white balance in a mixed room. The default failure is leaving the camera on auto white balance in a daylight-plus-tungsten room. It cannot decide, so it picks a slightly different compromise for every shot, and your coverage will not match — a nightmare to reconcile in the edit, and the kind of problem that looks like "cheap camera" but is really "no decision was made." Set white balance manually to your key source and lock it. One decision, made on purpose, on set, beats an hour of fighting mismatched shots later.
♿ Accessibility & Inclusion. Two habits belong here. First, when you shoot real people in the available light of public or semi-public places — a café, a market, a street at golden hour — get consent and, for anything you will publish, a release (Chapter 38 covers releases in full); "found" locations still contain people who did not agree to be in your video. Second, the naturalistic, low-key, warm-and-cool looks this chapter loves can be beautiful but dark — make sure faces and any on-screen text keep enough contrast and brightness to read for viewers with low vision, and always caption dialogue so the piece works with the sound off. Available-light mood is never an excuse for an unreadable image.
🔗 Connection. Mixed light is also a post topic: when you cannot fully solve it on set, the colorist balances and matches shots in correction (Chapter 31, §31.3 and §31.5), and the warm café look you are protecting here is deliberately pushed further in the grade (Chapter 32, §32.1). But the cleaner your decision on the day — kill, match, or embrace — the less the edit has to rescue. As ever: fix it in pre, shape it in production, finish it in post.

Production Checkpoint
Your task: shoot a natural-light version of your Project 1 talking-head, by a window, and compare it head-to-head with the built-light version you made in Chapters 11–12.
Seat your subject beside the largest window you have, turned about forty-five degrees toward the glass so it becomes a soft, directional key (§13.2). Set white balance manually for the window's daylight and lock your exposure for the face. If the shadow side falls too dark, lift it with a single white bounce on the opposite side — a piece of foamcore, a friend holding a card — to about one and a half stops under the key. Shoot the same thirty seconds of your subject to camera that you shot under your built three-point setup. Do not add a single purchased light.
Now put the two versions side by side and judge them honestly on the terms this whole part has taught you: Which face has better shape? Which color feels right for the piece? Which one is cleaner (less noise, better exposure)? And — the real question — which one serves the story your talking-head is telling? There is no universal winner. Window light is soft, natural, and free but tethers you to one wall and one time of day and drifts as the weather changes; built light is controllable, repeatable, and portable but takes gear, power, and setup time. Write one paragraph naming which you will use for Project 1 and why — in terms of the story and the shoot, not just "it looks nicer."
Why this matters: the ability to build light and the ability to find light are two different skills, and a real shooter has both and chooses between them on purpose. Making this comparison — and defending your choice — is the moment you stop following lighting recipes and start deciding lighting, which is the entire point of Part III. Project 1's light is now locked either way; in Chapters 14–15 you give it the clean sound that is its other half.
Summary
- Available light is read before it is shaped. On any location, read three things in order: direction (front is flat, side/45° gives shape, back rims or silhouettes, top buries the eyes), quality (hard from a small/bare source, soft from a large/diffused one — read it off the edge of a shadow), and color (set white balance manually to the key). You control your position relative to the light, not the light.
- Window light is a free softbox: large and near, so soft; from one wall, so directional. Seat the subject beside it (not facing or backing it), turned ~45°; angle sets contrast, distance-to-glass sets falloff; add one bounce for fill.
- Golden hour (the hour after sunrise / before sunset) is warm (~3000–4000K), side-on, and softened. Use the low sun as a side key, a backlight/rim (solves squinting), or a background glow. It is brief and changing — scout, pre-rig, shoot the most important shot first, and beat the clock.
- Overcast turns the whole sky into the largest softbox there is: soft, even, consistent. Open shade gives you the same soft skylight on a sunny day — just step into the shadow. Fix their two flaws: reintroduce direction (stand at the edge of the shade) and correct the cool color (shade/cloudy white balance, ~7000K) and top-heavy fill (a low bounce for the eyes).
- Shape outdoors by adding and subtracting. A bounce/reflector (white = soft, silver = brighter/cooler, gold = warm) adds fill; a flag and negative fill (a dark surface by the shadow side) subtract to restore shape in flat light. Under harsh sun: diffuse the key, then bounce, then flag.
- Mixed light (daylight + warm practicals) can't be neutralized by one white balance. Four moves: kill one source, match them (gel/re-bulb), embrace it (balance for the key, let motivated practicals go warm — the naturalistic choice), or split-and-correct in post. Never leave it on auto.

The other half is sound, and it is the half beginners neglect and audiences punish fastest. A gorgeous window-lit interview with hollow, echoing audio will be closed in seconds; a plain shot with clean, close, present sound will hold.
