Why this cut matters
Most of this chapter teaches you to make cuts disappear — to slide the seam under a sound, a movement, a shape. In that instant — one frame to the next — the film leaps across the entire span of human evolution, from the first tool to the machinery of spaceflight, and states its whole thesis without a word: these two things are the same thing. The bone and the spacecraft are both tools, and the story of humanity is the story of what we do with them.
For a chapter on the grammar of the edit, there is no purer teacher. Everything §28.3 argued about the match cut is here in its most extreme form:

Context: what the cut had to accomplish
To understand why the cut is so audacious, you have to understand the problem Kubrick set himself. 2001 is a film about human evolution and its relationship to tools and intelligence — from the first ape that picked up a bone, through spaceflight, to something beyond. The film's opening act, usually called "The Dawn of Man," is set among prehistoric hominids. Its final acts are set in the era of spaceflight. Between those two worlds lies the entire history of the human species.
A conventional film would bridge that gap with the tools of ordinary storytelling: a caption reading "Four Million Years Later," a narrator summarizing the march of progress, a dissolve through a montage of evolving technology — fire, the wheel, the engine, the rocket. Any of those would have worked, in the sense that the audience would have understood "time passed and humans advanced."
Kubrick threw all of that away and replaced it with a single cut. No caption. No narrator (the film is famously sparing with dialogue, and this stretch has none). No montage of intervening progress. our minds first, or the cut that follows would be a cut between two random shapes.
Everything hinges on that last line, so pause on it. By the time the bone leaves the creature's hand, we no longer see a bone. We see the first tool — and, because the same bone was just used to kill, the first weapon. Kubrick spends the whole preceding sequence loading the object with meaning, so that when the cut comes, it is not a cut between two shapes. It is a cut between two ideas, and the shape is only the vehicle.

Notice what is not in these boxes: no caption, no narration, no montage of intervening history, no dissolve to soften the leap. The entire transition from the dawn of humanity to the age of spaceflight is carried by one hard cut, prepared by a cleared frame and a loaded object, and completed by a total change of sound. That is the match cut at the absolute ceiling of the technique.
What Kubrick decided (and risked)
Every great cut is a set of brave decisions. Naming them teaches you to make your own — at your own scale, with your own subject.
He decided to trust one cut with the whole leap. The safe choice was to explain the passage of four million years — a caption, a narrator, a progress montage. Kubrick trusted the audience to make the leap themselves, from two images and their resemblance. This is the purest form of a principle you met in Chapter 1: the cut is where meaning is made. He did not put the meaning in a shot; he put it in the gap between two shots, and let the viewer manufacture it. The risk was total incomprehension — that audiences would simply see "a bone, then a spaceship" and feel nothing. He bet they would feel everything. He won.
He loaded the object before he cut on it. The cut only works because the preceding sequence turned a bone into the first tool and weapon. Kubrick spends real screen time — the discovery, the experimental swings, the smashing, the swelling theme — making the bone mean something before it leaves the hand. Kubrick prepared the canvas so that at the instant of the cut, the audience is holding one pale tumbling shape and nothing else. Then the matching shape is waiting on the other side. The invisibility of the seam is engineered by that preparation — you cannot match-cut cleanly on a busy frame.
He changed the sound completely across a matched picture. This is the subtle masterstroke. The picture matches (shape → shape, tumble → drift), which glides the eye across. But the sound transforms utterly — the prehistoric theme gives way to a serene waltz. The matched image says "this is continuous"; the changed sound says "and yet everything is now different." The cut is simultaneously the smoothest possible join and the largest possible leap, and it is the sound doing the leaping while the picture does the joining. He let the new rhythm answer the old one. The Dawn of Man is cut with quick, violent, impact-driven cuts (bones smashing). The orbital ballet is cut with long, slow, dissolve-linked takes. The editing style itself evolves across the match cut, from primitive violence to weightless grace — the form of the edit enacting the film's subject. That is editing thinking at the highest level: the rhythm of your cuts is part of your meaning, not just a container for it.
The craft moves, named
The cut is not magic; it is a small set of nameable techniques you can study and steal — every one of which recurs in ordinary work at ordinary scale.
The double match — shape and idea. The cut lands because it works on two channels at once. Graphically, the pale elongated tumbling bone resembles the pale elongated drifting craft (the eye glides). Conceptually, the first tool becomes the ultimate tool (the mind leaps). Either alone would be good; together they are unforgettable. When you plan a match cut, ask for both: what shape carries the eye, and what idea carries the mind? The rare cut that has both is the one people remember.
The maximal ellipsis — trust the gap. Editing is the art of leaving things out (Chapter 1's Up montage taught you ellipsis; this cut is its extreme). Kubrick leaves out four million years and trusts the audience to fill the gap. The lesson scales down perfectly: you do not need to show every step of a journey, a process, or a change. Show the before and the after, join them with a bridge (a shape, an idea, a sound), and the audience will build the middle — and building it themselves makes it theirs.

The first time, the cut lands as a jolt of surprise: oh — the bone became the spaceship. You could imagine that the surprise is the whole effect, and that once it's gone the cut is just a clever transition. But it isn't. On rewatch, knowing the join is coming, the cut becomes richer, because now you see the idea it carries rather than just the trick of the shapes. You watch the bone become a tool knowing it will become a spacecraft, and the whole sweep of the film's argument about tools and violence and progress is present in the throw.
