Chapter 24 — Further Reading & Resources

Live and event work is learned by reps, but a few resources will shorten the road — teaching the multicam grammar, the streaming signal chain, and the audio discipline this chapter compresses. Everything below is real; nothing is invented. Where a specific figure or spec matters, the resource itself (or the platform's own current documentation) is the authority — not your memory, because live specs change.

Suggested order. If you're new to events, start with the Filmmaker's Handbook sections on multi-camera and live production for the grammar, then get hands-on with a free switcher/streamer (OBS Studio) and do a private test stream before reading another word. Study one live multicam production (start with the I Love Lucy method from Case Study 1) to see the logic in action. Come back to Murch on cutting once you have angles to cut. Save the platform streaming specs for the week of your first real stream — and check them that week, because they move.


Foundational books

  • Steven Ascher & Edward Pincus, The Filmmaker's Handbook (widely used, regularly updated editions). The single most complete working reference in this book's whole bibliography, and its sections on multi-camera shooting, live production, and location sound cover the core of this chapter with more depth than any online tutorial.   • Walter Murch, In the Blink of an Eye. A short, profound book on why a cut works — and though it's about editing generally, it is exactly what you need once you have three synced angles and must decide which to show and when. The whole "cut on the emotion, not the clock" discipline of a multicam event edit is Murch's territory. Read it after you've cut your first multicam moment.   • Blain Brown, Cinematography: Theory and Practice. For the matching-cameras problem — exposure, white balance, and consistent image across multiple angles — Brown's treatment of exposure and the technical image is the reference.   • A dedicated location-sound reference (any reputable one). Because event audio is where amateurs are exposed, invest in a book focused on production sound — mic placement, levels and headroom, and taking a feed from a mixing board. The audio discipline of §24.6 rewards study more than almost any other single skill; a clean board feed with a monitored backup is what separates a professional event deliverable from an amateur one. Free and official learning

  • OBS Studio — official documentation and wiki (obsproject.com). OBS Studio is the standard free software switcher-and-streamer, and its own documentation is the honest, non-salesy way to learn the streaming signal chain hands-on: scenes and sources (your "cameras"), the switch, the encoder settings (bitrate, keyframe interval), and streaming to a platform while recording locally.   • Blackmagic Design — free DaVinci Resolve training and manuals (blackmagicdesign.com). The makers of the free version of DaVinci Resolve (this book's reference editor) publish free, official training and a detailed manual. For this chapter, the relevant parts are multicam editing — syncing angles by audio or timecode and cutting them live-style at your desk (§24.3, and Appendix E).   • Your target platform's live-streaming help center (official docs). Every streaming platform publishes its own current encoder specifications — resolution, frame-rate, bitrate range, keyframe interval, and ingest protocol (RTMP/SRT). These are the authority for §24.4, and they change, so always read the current version the week of your event rather than trusting any number printed here or anywhere else. Live productions and sequences to study

Watch these the way the Frame Log trains you to — counting cameras, spotting the safety wide, and noticing when the cut lands. All are attributed homages to real work; watch the originals.

  • I Love Lucy (1951) — the three-camera live-audience method. The birth of multicam, analyzed in Case Study 1. Widely credited to producer Desi Arnaz and cinematographer Karl Freund, it captured a once-only live performance from multiple angles at once and cut it in post — the exact logic every event edit still uses. Watch an episode and try to spot the three angles and the cut points. (Serves 🎓 Student; foundational for §24.2–24.3.)

  • The Beatles' rooftop concert (1969), part of the Let It Be project. A genuinely unrepeatable live moment — the band's last public performance, ended by police — covered by multiple cameras on the roof and in the street below. It is the purest case in the chapter of "you only get one take," and of why simultaneous multicam capture is the only way to edit a thing you can't reshoot (FIGURE 24.2).   • Live sports and awards-show direction (a genre to watch, not a single title). The most sophisticated live switching on earth happens in sports and awards broadcasts. Watch any of it with the sound off and study the directing: how the program feed cuts between wide and tight, how a director anticipates the next moment on preview before taking it to program, how reaction shots are cut in.   • The designed "one-take" films — Birdman (2014, Alejandro G. Iñárritu) and 1917 (2019, Sam Mendes). Not live and not multicam, but the fiction cousins of the live discipline: films built to feel like a single unbroken take, where — as at an event — there is no cutting away to fix a mistake.   • Live Aid (1985) — landmark live multi-camera broadcast. A massive, multi-venue live event broadcast to a global audience, and a monument to the stakes and logistics of "there is no second take" at scale. A useful study in the redundancy and signal-chain thinking of §24.1 and §24.4, scaled to its limit. (Serves 💼 Pro-track.)


Tools and apps (as principle, not a shopping list)

Named as classes of tool, always with a free or phone path — buy the function you actually need, never the rig that looks impressive.

  • Software switchers (free) — e.g., OBS Studio. Turn a laptop into a full switcher and streamer at no cost; the standard free path to live switching and streaming (§24.3–24.4). (📱 Phone-first, 🎥 Creator.)

  • Hardware switchers — e.g., the Blackmagic Design ATEM line. Dedicated units with physical inputs and buttons for fast, reliable live switching; what event and broadcast pros use when a job must be live. A principle to know, not a purchase to rush — most event films are cut in post and need no switcher at all. (💼 Pro-track.)

  • Multi-phone switching/streaming apps. Apps that let several phones feed one phone acting as the switcher over Wi-Fi make a real multicam live switch possible with gear you already own. Or skip switching entirely and simply record each phone's full angle to cut in post — no switcher required. (📱 Phone-first.)

  • Audio: a recorder with a line input, and a way to take a board feed. The single highest-value purchase for paid event work is whatever lets you take a clean mult/split from a venue's board into a recorder you can monitor. Proximity is everything (Chapters 14–15), and the board feed is proximity you don't have to place. (💼 Pro-track; serves any path shooting real events.)

  • Backup power and storage. Not glamorous, but the two failures that end a shoot cold are dead batteries and full cards (Chapter 18). More charged batteries and more card space than you think you need is the cheapest redundancy in the craft, and at an event redundancy is the whole job. (All paths.)


Where this connects

The business behind event work — contracts, releases for the people you film, and licensing the music that's playing — is Chapter 38. The full ingest-and-sync workflow that turns your multicam cards into a synced timeline is Chapter 27 (§27.4), and the edit grammar you'll cut those angles with is Chapters 26, 28, and 29.
