The repeatable exposure workflow (the checklist)

Run this top-to-bottom, every time. Goal: under a minute.

Fixed vs variable: fixed = cheapest, most neutral, swap glass. Variable = dial on the fly, but watch for a dark "X" and color cast at the extremes. Phone: clip-on ND + a manual app to pin the shutter.

Exposing Log — the short version

  • Never judge Log by eye — it's deliberately flat and grey and hides how close the highlights are to clipping.
  • See the truth with a monitoring LUT (previews the normal look while recording flat) or false color / waveform.
  • Protect the highlights — clipped is fatal, underexposed shadows are recoverable (at a noise cost).
  • Expose to your camera's published Log targets (middle grey + white card) — look them up once, note them.
  • "Expose to the right" (rate a touch brighter) cleans shadow noise — but stop before any important highlight or skin approaches clipping. Highlights always win.
