Part V — Genres and Formats
The craft is universal, but the jobs are specific. A documentary, a corporate testimonial, a vertical social clip, a live event, and a drone shot each apply the same fundamentals — framing, light, sound, coverage, story — under different constraints and toward different goals. Part V takes you across the genres and formats you will most often be asked to produce, showing how the universal principles bend to each.
Five chapters map the working landscape:
- Chapter 21 — Documentary and Nonfiction. Vérité, narration, and archival — building honest stories from reality.
- Chapter 22 — Corporate and Commercial Video. Client briefs, brand guidelines, testimonials, and product videos — serving a client's goal without losing the craft.
- Chapter 23 — Social and Vertical Video. Reels, TikTok, and Shorts — where the hook is everything and the frame stands upright.
- Chapter 24 — Live, Event, and Multi-Camera Production. Weddings, conferences, and streaming — the craft of the shoot you only get one take at.
- Chapter 25 — Aerial, Action, and Specialty Capture. Drones, FPV, 360, timelapse, and slow motion — new perspectives, used with restraint and within the law.
Each genre is a lens on the same fundamentals. The documentary chapter deepens the interview and B-roll work of Part IV; the corporate chapter introduces the client relationship you will monetize in Chapter 38; the social chapter teaches the hook that every format now borrows; the live chapter tests your preparation under fire; and the specialty chapter adds production value when the story genuinely calls for it — and warns you off it when it doesn't.
Across Part V you continue Project 2 (its documentary framing, Ch.21) and kick off Project 3, your branded piece, by writing its brief in Chapter 22. You also learn to repurpose your work for vertical platforms (Ch.23). By the end, you will know not just how to make video, but how to make the specific kinds of video the world pays for. Then Part VI takes everything you have shot and teaches you to turn it into finished films — in the edit.
