Case Study 2: Shoot-Along — Covering a Fundraising Gala with Three Cameras and a Board Feed
This is a from-scratch production walkthrough in the book's event / room setup — the one-take, available-light, no-second-chance scenario. We plan the angles, run the board feed, protect the one moment that matters, and cut it in post. Where Case Study 1 analyzed the birth of multicam, this one builds a real event, decision by decision, so you can run one yourself. Everything here is a constructed teaching example.
The brief and the constraints
A local nonprofit hires you to cover their annual fundraising gala — the same event you met in Chapter 18 (§18.1, FIGURE 18.8). It is an evening of speeches, dinner, and one big moment: partway through, the organization will surprise a longtime community figure — a local baker who has quietly fed volunteers for a decade — with a lifetime service award. She does not know it's coming. Her face, the instant she realizes, is the shot the entire piece will be built around. The client wants a five-minute highlight film afterward, and they'd like a live stream to the members who couldn't attend, if it doesn't put the film at risk.
Now the constraints, which are the whole story of event work:
- One take. The award happens once. The gasp happens once. If you miss it, there is no version of this evening where you get it back, and the client's single most important deliverable is gone.
- A room you don't control. It's a banquet hall with a small stage, house lighting you can't change, warm tungsten-ish uplights on the walls, and a bright LED wash on the stage. You are a guest with cameras, not a production with a grip truck.
- A live audio source you can borrow. The venue has an AV team running a mixing board — the podium mic and a wireless lav for speakers all go through it. That board feed is the cleanest audio in the building, if you can get it.
- A small crew. It's you and one other person. Two people, three cameras, a board feed, and possibly a stream. This is a realistic paid event, and the redundancy discipline is the only thing that makes it survivable.
The brief, distilled to one sentence you write at the top of your plan: catch the honoree's face at the award — cleanly, from more than one angle, with clean audio — and build a five-minute film around it, without betting the film on the stream. Everything below serves that sentence.
The plan: coverage, roles, and the run-of-show
You get the run-of-show from the event's organizer during the week — the order and rough timing of the evening — and you mark the one moment everything bends around:

The whole evening has exactly one shot you cannot miss, and it arrives at 7:55. That single fact drives every decision: the cameras are placed, exposed, and matched before 7:55, and all three are rolling before the emcee finishes the build-up, because the honoree's real reaction happens in the half-second she hears her own name — and you will not get a warning more specific than the run-of-show already gave you.

CAM A — MASTER: locked wide, back-center, sees the whole stage. Never stops, never
reframes. If everything else fails, this alone gives the client a usable film.
CAM B — TIGHT: your partner, on sticks, punched in on faces. Between speakers reframes
slowly. At 7:55 it is LOCKED on the honoree's face and rolling early.
CAM C — ROAMER: you, handheld/gimbal, catching her walk-up, the crowd's gasp, applause,
hands, details. Allowed to move and take risks because A and B hold the safety.

Two people cannot operate three cameras at once, so the master (CAM A) is the one you set and forget: locked on a tripod, exposure and white balance dialed in, rolling on a long record before the award and simply left alone. Your partner owns the tight (CAM B). You own the roamer (CAM C) and the audio. That division — one person guards the emotion on the tight while the other roams and manages sound — is the two-person event crew from Chapter 18 (§18.5), and it works because the master needs no operator once it's locked.

Set both manually, identically, before 7:55.
The signal chain: board feed, backup, and the optional stream
Sound is half the picture, and at an event the audio of the speeches is a single fragile thing. The AV team's board is the cleanest source in the building, so you get it — and you back it up, because a board feed's one failure mode is failing silently. Here is the audio and (optional) stream chain you build during setup:

THE RULE: the FILM is built from the full ISO angles + the board feed. The STREAM, if
you do it, is a *separate* deliverable that must never compromise the ISO recordings.
Notice the discipline in that diagram. The five-minute film — the deliverable that actually matters — is built from each camera's full ISO recording plus the board feed. The stream is a bonus, layered on top only because you can also route the cameras into a software switcher; and even while streaming, every camera keeps recording its own full angle, and you keep a local record of the program. The stream is allowed to fail. The film is not. You never let the "nice to have" (live members watching) endanger the "cannot lose" (the honoree's face on the award). That priority ordering is the event mindset.
You find the AV person during setup (the recce, Chapter 16 §16.6), introduce yourself early, and politely ask for a mult or split of the board so your feed doesn't affect their mix. You run it to your recorder, set levels with headroom so the applause doesn't clip past 0 dBFS (Chapter 15, §15.4), put on headphones, and — this is the whole game — you keep the headphones on and watch the meters, because a board feed you don't monitor is a bet you'll lose eventually. Underneath it, every camera's scratch mic keeps rolling: your backup if the board dies, and the common audio your editor will use to sync all three angles.
The shoot, phase by phase
Phase 1 — Lock the master (before guests matter)
Long before 7:55, you set CAM A and make it untouchable. It goes on a tripod, back-center, framed on a clean wide of the whole stage — podium, award table, the space the honoree will walk into. You expose it for the lit stage using the waveform (Chapter 5), set manual white balance off the stage wash, and start a long record. Then you leave it alone for the rest of the evening. It is boring. It is also the shot that guarantees the client a film even if both other cameras fail.

THE MOVE Locked off on a tripod (Ch.8 §8.1). It does not move for the entire evening. Stillness is
the point — this is the safety, and a safety that reframes isn't a safety.
THE LIGHT The venue's bright LED stage wash, exposed for the podium; the room falls off darker at the
edges, which is fine — the eye goes to the lit stage. White balance set manually to the wash.
THE SOUND Its own scratch mic hears the room and the house speakers — rough, but a backup, and the sync
anchor for the angles. The clean speech audio comes from the board feed, laid in later.
THE CUT In the edit this is the establishing shot and the fallback: we cut here for context and hold
here whenever the tighter cameras are moving, resetting, or unusable.
THE EFFECT Calm, complete, reliable. It never wows anyone — and it never fails anyone, which at an event
is worth far more than a shot that dazzles once and misses the moment that mattered.
THE LESSON The master is insurance you shoot once and pray you never *need.* Lock it, expose it, roll it
long, and forget it. Its whole value is that it can't miss what everything else might.
Phase 2 — The tight guards the emotion
Your partner runs CAM B on a tripod, punched in on the podium and, when it matters, on faces. During the early speeches it reframes slowly between speakers. But it has one real job, and everything else is warm-up: at 7:55 it must be locked on the honoree's face and already rolling when her name is called. So a minute before the award, your partner abandons the podium and pre-frames the honoree at her table — because the shot is not the emcee announcing; the shot is her hearing it. This is "roll early, stop late, never chase" made concrete: the tight is on her face before the sentence that changes it.
Phase 3 — The roamer hunts what only it can get
You run CAM C, handheld (or on a gimbal), and you own everything the locked cameras can't: the honoree's walk to the stage, the crowd rising, applauding hands, the emcee's face, a detail of the award itself. You are allowed to move and even to be caught mid-reframe, because CAM A and CAM B are holding safe frames underneath you. During the award you do the one thing the tight cannot: you turn and catch the room's reaction — the tables of people on their feet — which is the context that makes her face mean something in the cut.
Phase 4 — Protect the one moment (7:55)
This is the entire evening. Two minutes before the award, you and your partner go quiet and ready:
- CAM A: locked, rolling, forgotten — check.
- CAM B: your partner pre-framed on the honoree's face, rolling early — check.
- CAM C: you, positioned to catch her walk-up and the crowd, rolling — check.
- Audio: board feed monitored on headphones, levels good, scratch mics rolling on all cameras — check.
Then the emcee builds up, and calls her name, and the moment happens — once — and all three cameras already have it. Here is the payoff, the shot the whole plan existed to catch, now covered from three angles instead of the single camera of Chapter 18:

scratch mics. Both were ready before the moment, because sound was set in Phase 4, not at 7:55.
THE CUT In the edit: hold the master for the announcement, cut to the tight on her face at the gasp
(the emotional peak), cut to the roamer for the crowd's roar, back to the tight for her walk-up.
THE EFFECT Three seconds of pure, unrepeatable emotion — her realization, her face, the room's love —
caught completely because three cameras were rolling before the moment, not after.
THE LESSON This is the whole chapter in one beat. You cannot light, frame, or roll for a once-only moment
*after* it starts. The organization — and the second and third camera — existed before it did.
Compare this to Chapter 18's FIGURE 18.8, where a single well-run camera caught the same kind of moment. That was good. This — the same moment from three matched angles, cuttable together, with clean board-feed audio underneath — is what multicam adds: not just catching the moment, but being able to edit it into three seconds that build from her face to the room and back.
Phase 5 — Everything after
You keep rolling through the applause and her acceptance speech (board feed clean, all cameras running), then cover the remaining speeches, the toast, and enough B-roll of the dancing and the room to give the edit texture. You never stop the master until the deliverable moments are all safely past. Before you leave the venue, you back up every card — the ISO angles and the board-feed recorder — to two places (Chapter 18, §18.3; the full workflow is Chapter 27). At an event, "I'll back it up at home" is how a evening's irreplaceable footage dies in a bag on the drive back.
The edit pass: sync first, then cut on the emotion
The edit of a multicam event begins not with a creative decision but with a sync problem, and you planned for it on set with the scratch mics and (if you clapped) a slate. You bring the three ISO angles and the board-feed audio into the editor and line them up by their common audio — the room sound every camera's scratch mic heard — so that all three angles and the clean board feed share one timeline, frame-aligned. Modern editors automate this: you select the angles and build a synced multicam clip (in DaVinci Resolve, a multicam clip synced by audio — see Appendix E; the full ingest-and-sync workflow is Chapter 27, §27.4). Then you replace the rough scratch audio with the clean board feed, and you're ready to cut a three-angle moment as if you were switching it live — except with hindsight and infinite retries.

The cutting logic is the same one Case Study 1 found in 1951: cut on the emotion, and let one continuous audio track carry the moment underneath the picture cuts. You hold the master for the announcement (establish), cut to the tight the instant her face changes (the peak — you cut on the gasp, not before it), cut to the roamer for the crowd's roar (context and scale), then back to the tight for her walk-up (stay with the person), and resolve on the master as she reaches the stage. Five cuts, three cameras, three seconds — and because every angle was recorded in full and matched, you had every choice, and because the board feed runs unbroken underneath, no cut is ever heard, only seen.
Two decisions define whether this edit sings. First, cut on the reaction, not the announcement — the amateur cut lingers on the emcee saying the name; the professional cut is already on her face when the name lands, because that's where the emotion is. Second, don't over-cut — the moment wants to breathe, so you hold the tight on her face long enough to feel it before you cut away to the crowd. A frantic five-cuts-a-second edit would shatter exactly the emotion the whole evening was built to catch. Stillness and patience in the cut are what let the three seconds land.
Discussion questions
- The plan bent every decision around a single moment at 7:55. Is it right to let one three-second shot dominate an entire evening's coverage? When is that focus a strength, and when might it cause you to miss other worthwhile moments?
- The master camera was deliberately "boring" and never moved. Explain to a client who asks "why are we paying for a camera that just sits there?" what that locked wide actually buys them.
- The stream was treated as a bonus that must never endanger the film. Do you agree with that priority? When might a client's live stream legitimately outrank the recorded film?
- Getting the board feed required finding and befriending the venue's AV person during setup. Why is that a production skill as much as a technical one, and what's your plan if they say no?
- The edit "cut on the gasp, not the announcement." Watch any awards show or surprise-reveal video and find the exact frame the director cuts to the recipient's face. Is it before or after they realize? What does the timing do to you as a viewer?
- This shoot ran on two people and three cameras, with one camera set-and-forget. Where is the breaking point — at what scale of event does a two-person crew stop being enough, and what's the first role you'd add?
Your turn: cover your own one-moment event
Take this method to a real event you can access, at any scale.
The brief: cover a real event that has one moment that matters — a graduation, a recital, a birthday surprise, a toast, a game-winning play, an award — with at least two cameras, and build a 60–90 second highlight cut around that moment.
Constraints and guidance:
- Write the run-of-show and mark the one moment. Find out the order, and identify the single shot you cannot miss. Everything bends around it.
- Lock a master, run a tight. One camera is a locked, safe wide that never moves; the other is tight on the faces. Match their settings (the ⚙️ Settings Box above). Roll both before the moment — early.
- Plan your audio with a backup. Get the cleanest source you can (a board feed, or a close mic), and keep a scratch/room mic rolling on every camera — for backup and for sync.
- Cut on the emotion. Sync your angles by their common audio, lay the clean audio underneath, and cut on the reaction, holding long enough to let it breathe.
Show your cut to someone who was there and ask: "Does this feel like the moment?" If they nod — or tear up — you have done the hardest thing in this book: you caught something that happened once, from more than one angle, and made it into a piece that will outlive the evening. That is event production, and you can now do it.
