Four routes through the book, plus course-length maps for instructors and self-studiers. Pick the one that matches why you are here.
🏃 Fast Track — the working practitioner's route
For: project engineers, assistant project managers, superintendents, and estimators who are
already on a job and need the management spine quickly.
Time: roughly three weeks of evenings, or two focused weekends.
How: read each chapter's index.md, do the 📋 Try it drill, read key-takeaways.md. Skip the
exercise sets and the case studies unless one matches a problem you have right now.

Then, as needed: Chapter 19 (subcontractors), Chapter 24 (safety), Chapter 34 (company finance), and Appendix G (the contract clause decoder).
📘 Standard — the student's and new manager's route
For: construction management students, new project engineers, and anyone learning the discipline properly for the first time. Time: two semesters, or about ten months at a chapter a week. How: all 42 chapters in order. Read the chapter, do the exercise set, take the quiz, complete the Project Checkpoint. Do not skip the Spaced Review sections. They are short, they feel redundant, and they are the reason you will still know this in a year.
Carry the Willow Street Community Center project the entire way. One deliverable per chapter, forty-two deliverables, one complete project notebook at the end.
Semester break falls naturally after Chapter 21 — the end of the preconstruction and early-field material. A cleaner break for a two-course sequence is after Chapter 17 (end of Part III), which splits the book into planning the work and doing the work.
🔬 Deep Dive — the complete route
For: readers going all the way, graduate students, and anyone preparing for a professional credential. Time: a year or more. How: everything in the Standard path, plus:
- Every exercise set including Part E (research and extension problems — the ones that send you to look at a real specification, a real jurisdiction's permit requirements, or a real project).
- Appendix B, the CPM scheduling workbook — twenty worked problems, done by hand before you look at the solutions.
- Appendix C, the estimating reference — and, more importantly, the instructions in it for building your own historical cost database.
- The
🔬 Deep Divenote at the top of each chapter, which points to where that chapter's depth is. - Both case studies in every chapter, treated as discussion pieces rather than reading.
🏗️ Field Track — from the field to the office
For: superintendents, foremen, and craft professionals moving into management. You already know how the work goes together. What you need is the systems, the paper, and the money.
Phase 1 — what you already half know, now with vocabulary: Chapters 1, 7, 8, 9, 10, 17, 18
Phase 2 — the parts of management that are closest to the field: Chapters 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 27
Phase 3 — the controls side, which is what gets people promoted: Chapters 14, 28, 29, 31, 32
Phase 4 — the career: Chapters 41, 42
The reason this order works: you will find Phase 1 easy and it will build confidence in a book that is about to ask you to do arithmetic you have not done in twenty years. Phase 3 is the part that is genuinely new, and you should not start there.

A single 15-week undergraduate course
Covers the management core. Drops Part II (means and methods) if your program already has a construction materials and methods course, and drops Part VII except Chapter 35.

A two-semester sequence
Semester 1 — Planning the Work: Chapters 1–17 plus Appendix K. The deliverable is a complete estimate, schedule, and bid package for Willow Street.
Semester 2 — Building the Work: Chapters 18–42. The deliverable is the completed project notebook: field plans, controls, change orders, a delay analysis, and a closeout package.
A 12-week contractor onboarding program
For new field engineers and project engineers, one 90-minute session per week with the reading done
in advance: Chapters 1, 4, 7, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 25, 26, 28, 31. The 📋 Try it drills become the
in-session work, and the participant's own live project replaces Willow Street.

How the threshold concepts map onto the paths
Fifteen chapters carry a 🚪 threshold concept — an idea that changes how you see the job. If you read nothing else, read these fifteen paragraphs.

Then read Chapter 3 (so you understand what you are buying), Chapter 4 (so you understand what you signed), Chapter 31 (so you can tell a fair change order from an unfair one), and Chapter 40 (so the end of your project does not take a year).
