Chapter 39 — Further Reading
Everything below is a real body, standard, publication series, or resource. Where I am not certain of an exact title, edition, or section number, I describe the source rather than invent a citation — and you should hold every author who writes about construction technology to that standard, because this is the subject area where fabricated precision is most common and hardest for a reader to catch.
Three warnings before you start. First: technology vendors publish "research." Some of it is careful; some of it is a brochure with footnotes. Ask who paid for the study, what the sample was, and whether the comparison case was measured or assumed. Second: aviation, privacy, and labor rules vary by jurisdiction and change. Nothing below substitutes for the current primary source where you actually work. Third: prefer the boring source. A standards body's procedure document will teach you more than any number of case-study videos.
Models, measurement, and what a deliverable actually promises
1. BIMForum — the Level of Development (LOD) Specification. The reference the industry actually uses when it argues about how much reliance a model element has earned. Updated periodically, available without charge. Read it specifically for the distinction that governs §39.4: the difference between an element coordinated well enough for clash detection and an element a shop can cut steel from. For: anyone writing a BIM execution plan, and anyone about to prefabricate from a model. Pairs directly with Chapter 35.
2. The U.S. Institute of Building Documentation — its specification for levels of accuracy in building documentation. The counterpart question to LOD, and the one contractors skip: not how developed is this model but how accurate is this measurement, and against what? It gives you the vocabulary for the accuracy-and-reliance statement that should accompany every as-built model you hand an owner. For: anyone selling or buying a scan-based deliverable.
3. The AIA's digital data and building information modeling documents, and the ConsensusDocs BIM addendum. Both organizations publish contract instruments addressing the questions §39.2.1 raises: who owns the model and the point cloud, what reliance other parties may place on them, who maintains them, and what happens at project end. Read them for the structure of the questions, then answer those questions in your own contract. For: project managers, and anyone whose company is starting to deliver models as products rather than internal tools. Do not assume your standard agreement addresses any of this; most older forms do not.
Prefabrication and modular construction
4. The Construction Industry Institute — its research program on modularization and prefabrication. The most rigorous body of material on when modularization pays, what must be decided early, and how to assess a project's suitability. It is notably unsentimental: it treats early design freeze and front-end planning as the binding constraints, which is exactly the argument of §39.4.3. For: anyone building the business case Grace Lindqvist had to defend. Some material is member-restricted; the published summaries are still worth your time.
5. Your jurisdiction's industrialized-building, modular, or factory-built construction program, and the third-party inspection agencies that serve it. §39.4.3 lists code and inspection as an obstacle owned by the authority having jurisdiction, and the practical answer varies enormously: many U.S. states run a state-level industrialized-building program with registered third-party inspection agencies and factory certification; other jurisdictions handle it entirely differently, or not at all. Find out how your building official inspects work closed in a factory two states away — before you commit to a fabrication approach, not after. For: anyone contemplating rung 4 or 5 of the ladder in §39.4.1.
6. The Lean Construction Institute — material on flow, work structuring, and making work ready. Prefabrication's real mechanism is that it converts assembly work into production work, and the Lean literature develops that idea most carefully. It is also the best corrective to the belief that prefabrication is primarily a manufacturing achievement rather than a planning one. For: readers who found the production-versus-assembly argument compelling and want the full version. Pairs with Chapter 27 and Chapter 38.
Concrete maturity and in-place strength
7. ASTM International's standard practice for estimating concrete strength by the maturity method, and the ACI committee report on in-place methods for estimating concrete strength. These two documents are the whole of §39.7.2. The ASTM practice covers the procedure, including the calibration step that is not optional; the ACI report puts maturity in context alongside the other in-place methods and is candid about what each can and cannot tell you. Read the calibration procedure before you buy a single logger, because a maturity program running on somebody else's curve is a confident number pointing the wrong way. For: superintendents, self-perform concrete managers, and anyone who has ever wanted to strip forms a day early.
Drones, rigging, and the physical hazards these technologies create
8. Your national civil aviation authority's current material on commercial unmanned aircraft operations — and, in the same week, a phone call to your insurance broker. In the United States that authority is the Federal Aviation Administration; elsewhere Transport Canada, the UK Civil Aviation Authority, EASA and the national authority in EU member states, CASA in Australia, or the equivalent body where you work. Requirements for operator certification, aircraft registration, airspace authorization, and operational limits vary by country and have changed more than once in the last decade, so go to the authority's own current pages and note the date you checked. Pay particular attention to airspace authorization near hospital helipads — a live issue on exactly the kind of project this book describes. Then call the broker: general liability policies frequently exclude aircraft operations, and the answer is often that you need a separate endorsement or policy. That fifteen-minute call has ended more than one drone program that had already bought the aircraft.
9. OSHA 29 CFR 1926 — the cranes and derricks subpart, the materials-handling and rigging provisions, and the fall protection and scaffold subparts. Prefabrication does not remove regulatory exposure; it relocates it. Setting a two-thousand-pound assembled module in a partially built corridor is a rigging and suspended-load operation performed fifty-nine times, governed by rules that have nothing to do with the fact that the module was built in a shop. Read the applicable subparts alongside the safety planning in Chapter 24 before you write the pick plan. Requirements outside the United States differ; find the equivalent regime where you work. For: anyone setting prefabricated assemblies.
10. NIOSH — its research on occupational robotics and on exoskeletons in the workplace. NIOSH approaches these technologies from the exposure side rather than the productivity side, which is the framing §39.6 argues for. Its exoskeleton material is especially useful because it takes seriously the question vendors skip: whether a device that reduces one loading creates a different hazard — a snag point, restricted movement, impeded egress. For: safety directors, and any manager about to buy forty of anything a worker wears.
The part you must not improvise
11. Your jurisdiction's privacy, biometric-data, and electronic-monitoring law — and your labor and employment counsel. §39.7.4 is the section of this chapter I would least like you to improvise. Location and biometric data are separately regulated in some jurisdictions and not in others; the rules change; and monitoring another employer's employees raises questions a collective bargaining agreement may answer differently than a statute does. This varies enormously by jurisdiction and it is a question for counsel before deployment, not after. For: anyone proposing wearables, cameras that identify individuals, or location tracking on a multi-employer site.
The productivity argument, and watching the industry honestly
12. The Bureau of Labor Statistics industry productivity program — the construction series — with two companions. §39.1 asks you to treat the direction of construction's productivity record as settled and the size of the gap as genuinely contested, then tells you to read the underlying data yourself rather than trust anyone's summary, mine included. Start here, and read the methodology notes as carefully as the numbers: what counts as construction "output" is the entire argument.
Two companions worth the time. NIST's work on the cost of inadequate interoperability in the capital facilities industry is an older study whose specific figures are dated and were contested when published — read it for the taxonomy, which remains the clearest description of where information is lost between design, construction, and operations, and therefore of what reality capture and BIM are actually attacking. And Engineering News-Record, read continuously with one question in mind: is this on a project, or is it in a press release? That habit builds the calibration §39.6's table is trying to teach. When a technology appears in ENR's project coverage rather than its technology coverage, it has arrived.
