Chapter 9 — Further Reading
Nine pointers, all real bodies and real publications. Where I am not certain of an exact title, edition, or document number, I describe the source rather than inventing a citation — do the same in your own writing, and verify the current version before you rely on any standard, because standards are revised and code adoption varies by jurisdiction.
1. The International Building Code (IBC), International Code Council — Chapters 7, 14, 15, and 26. The code chapters that govern what this chapter describes: fire-resistance-rated construction and through-penetration protection (Ch. 7), exterior walls and weather protection (Ch. 14), roof assemblies and rooftop structures (Ch. 15), and plastics including foam plastic insulation (Ch. 26). Read Chapter 7 first if you take only one — it is where rated assemblies, head-of-wall joints, and firestopping live, and it explains why your most commonly failed inspection is what it is. Critical caveat: your jurisdiction adopts a specific edition with local amendments. Find the adopting ordinance, not a summary. For: every CM. Chapter 7 should be read before your first above-ceiling inspection.
2. ASHRAE Standard 90.1 — Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings. The document behind continuous insulation, thermal bridging limits, fenestration U-factor and SHGC requirements, and — increasingly — air-barrier and whole-building air-leakage provisions. You do not need to design to it, but you need to recognize when a substitution puts compliance at risk, which is most of what §9.5.3 of this chapter was about. Many jurisdictions adopt it (or the International Energy Conservation Code) with amendments. For: anyone reviewing facade or glazing substitutions. Read the fenestration and building-envelope sections.
3. ASTM International — the exterior wall and fenestration test methods. ASTM publishes the field and laboratory test methods your specification will name for air infiltration, static and dynamic water penetration, and structural performance of exterior wall assemblies, along with the substrate moisture tests for concrete (the in-situ relative humidity probe method and the anhydrous calcium chloride method). Do not memorize designations from a textbook — pull the actual designations from your project specification and read those. For: project engineers writing or administering an inspection and test plan. Read the method your spec cites, before the test.
4. AAMA / the Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA). The body that publishes the voluntary specifications and field-testing procedures for windows, curtain wall, storefront, and skylights — including the field water-testing methods your envelope consultant will run on the first production installations. FGIA also publishes installation guidance and technical bulletins that are unusually practical. For: anyone managing a fenestration or curtain-wall package. Start with their published guidance on field testing of installed assemblies.
5. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) — the NRCA Roofing Manual. The industry's standard technical reference for low-slope and steep-slope roofing: assembly design, attachment, insulation and tapered systems, flashing details at every condition, and quality-control guidance. If you manage roofing packages, own a current copy. The details section alone will make you better at reviewing a roofing shop drawing. For: superintendents and PMs with roofing scope. Use the flashing details as a review checklist.
6. The Building Enclosure Council network and the enclosure-consulting literature. Local Building Enclosure Councils, affiliated with the National Institute of Building Sciences, hold accessible technical meetings where practicing envelope consultants present real forensic case studies — which is the fastest way to develop the pattern recognition this chapter is trying to give you. NIBS also maintains the Whole Building Design Guide, a free public resource with substantial building-envelope content. For: CMs who want to get good at this quickly. Attend one meeting; you will hear three failures you can now recognize.
7. OSHA, 29 CFR 1926 — Subpart L (Scaffolds), Subpart M (Fall Protection), and the construction respirable crystalline silica standard. The regulatory floor for enclosure work: suspended-scaffold requirements including independent lifelines and competent-person inspection, fall-protection triggers and systems, and the engineering controls, exposure control plan, and competent-person duties for silica generated by cutting masonry, concrete, precast, and fiber-cement panel. OSHA publishes free plain-language guidance documents for all three; start with those, then read the standard. For: everyone. Read Subpart L before your first swing-stage job.
8. NFPA 101, Life Safety Code, and the listed firestop system directories. NFPA 101 governs egress, smoke barriers, and the life-safety concepts your rated-assembly drawings represent. Separately, the nationally recognized testing laboratories publish searchable directories of listed through-penetration firestop systems, indexed by penetrant type, wall construction, and rating. Learn to search one. When an inspector asks which listed system a penetration matches, "the sealant the spec named" is not an answer — the system number is. For: project engineers and QC managers. The directory search is a twenty-minute skill with a very long payoff.
9. The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) — MasterFormat, and any real Division 07 and 08 specification. Enclosure work is scattered across Division 07 (thermal and moisture protection: waterproofing, air barriers, insulation, roofing, flashing, sealants) and Division 08 (openings: doors, frames, hardware, windows, curtain wall, glazing). Reading a complete Division 07 and 08 from a real project — many public owners post full bid sets online — teaches more about where scope gaps live than any summary can. Pay attention to what each section says about mockups, field testing, and warranties, and to which requirements have a frequency, an owner, and a consequence. For: estimators and PMs at buyout. A note on Tier 1 versus Tier 2
Everything above is a real standards body, regulator, or association. When you cite this material professionally, cite the current edition and confirm what your jurisdiction has actually adopted — code adoption, energy-code stringency, and enforcement practice vary significantly by state and locality and change on a cycle. And when you do not know an exact designation, describe the source instead of guessing at a number. A specification citation that turns out to be wrong costs you credibility you will need later.
