Work these with the chapter closed where you can. Where a question asks for a document, write the document — the skill in this chapter is entirely in the writing, and reading about it does almost nothing.

Part A — Conceptual Understanding ⭐
A1. In one sentence each, state the purpose and the output of these four meetings: the OAC meeting, the subcontractor coordination meeting, the pre-installation conference, and the internal project team meeting. Then say which one of the four most projects skip, and what it costs them.
A2. The chapter argues that meetings matter more in construction than in most industries. State the argument in three sentences without using the words "communication" or "important."
A3. Why is "Cardinal Mechanical will look into it" not an action item? Give two distinct reasons — one about the missing person and one about the missing date.
A4. List the five elements of an impact statement, in order. Then write a one-line example of each element as it would appear for an idled crew.
A5. Name five fields on a daily report and, for each, state the single specific thing that field wins or loses.
A6. What are the three things meeting minutes should record, and the four things they must not? Give one example of each of the four prohibited categories.
A7. Define "contemporaneous record" and give three reasons such a record carries more weight than one reconstructed after a dispute begins.

Part B — Applied Analysis ⭐⭐
B1. Your weekly OAC meeting has twelve attendees and runs ninety minutes. Using an illustrative blended loaded rate of $105 per hour, compute the professional-time cost of one meeting and of forty such meetings. Then state two specific structural changes that would cut the duration in half, and estimate the annual saving. State clearly which assumptions in your calculation are illustrative.
B2. Here is a daily report entry: "Rain. Crews sent home. Lost a day." List every piece of information that is missing, and explain — specifically — what the missing information would have to establish for the day to support a time extension.
B3. A subcontractor's project manager says in a coordination meeting: "We should be able to get the second floor roughed in sometime next month if the areas are ready." Rewrite this as a commitment that could actually be checked. Then write the three questions you would ask before accepting it.
B4. Your architect's minutes contain this entry: "Contractor agreed that the delay in the curtain wall submittal was due to Contractor's late transmittal and will absorb the associated schedule impact." You disagree with half of it. The contract gives you ten days to object and six have passed. Write the objection letter. Keep it under 250 words.
B5. A superintendent tells you the daily reports take too long and asks to drop three fields to save time: quantities installed, equipment idle hours, and visitors. Argue the case for keeping each one, using a specific scenario in which that field decides an outcome. Then propose an honest alternative that actually reduces the time.
B6. Your project has fourteen recurring meetings, inherited from a previous project manager. Three of them consistently produce no decisions and no commitments. Describe how you would identify which three, and how you would eliminate them without appearing to reduce communication.
B7. An owner's representative texts your superintendent at 6:40 p.m.: "Go ahead and pull the wall back 2 feet in the lobby, we'll deal with the paperwork later." Describe, in order, the four things that must happen before 7:00 a.m. the next morning, and say what goes wrong if any one of them is skipped.
B8. Compare the value of a photograph taken and filed as IMG_4471.jpg with the same photograph filed as 20260416_L3AreaB_004.jpg and referenced in that day's daily report. Quantify the difference in terms of retrieval time and describe a scenario where the difference decides a dispute.
Part C — Calculations and Deliverables ⭐⭐–⭐⭐⭐
C1. Write a full daily report. Use this day on the Willow Street Community Center ($6.8M, 24,000 SF, City of Rivermont Parks & Recreation, 425 CD, LD $1,200/CD).
Tuesday, day 168. Low 34°F at 0600, high 51°F. No precipitation. Wind N 15–22 mph with gusts. Masonry crew of 8 on the first-floor CMU at the gym wall; steel erection crew of 6 setting the second-floor beams over the multipurpose rooms. At 0930 the crane operator refused a pick because of gusts at the boom tip; steel erection stopped 0930–1245 (6 ironworkers plus 1 operator plus 1 oiler stood by). At 1100 the city plumbing inspector rejected the underslab rough in the kitchen area because a required cleanout is missing at the grease waste line; the slab-on-grade placement scheduled for Wednesday at 0700 (activity C-1220, 96 CY) must be pushed. One delivery: 14 bundles of joist, ticket SJ-4412, complete. The mechanical subcontractor's foreman reported a near-miss at 1330 — a worker on the second floor stepped near an unguarded floor opening left uncovered after a duct drop; no injury, opening immediately covered and marked.
Write the complete report, every field, with impact statements in the five-element form. Compute the labor hours for the crane standby. Then write the two written notifications you would send the same day, to whom, and why.
Numeric check
Crane standby: 8 people (6 ironworkers + operator + oiler) × 3.25 hours (0930–1245) = 26 labor hours. Note that the wind stoppage is a weather event and the reason matters — the operator's refusal is a safety decision under the manufacturer's operating limits, and the report should say so plainly rather than implying it was a judgment call. The Wednesday concrete push is a separate impact with a different cause (the failed inspection), and the two must not be blended into one entry.
C2. Build the decision log. From Case Study 26-2, take the three deferred decisions at Rivermont Elementary (gym flooring, kitchen equipment rough-in coordination, site electrical service and easement). Build a decision log with columns for decision required, decider by name and organization, date opened, age in days, date needed by, cost of delay, and status — as it should have looked at month nine. Invent plausible names and dates consistent with the case. Then write the escalation notice for whichever item you judge most urgent.
C3. Price the documentation gap. Using the CO #14 table in §26.7, verify the arithmetic: confirm that the actual costs sum to $186,400, that the substantiated costs sum to $121,000, and that the gap is $65,400. Then compute the unrecovered amount from the settlement figure of $142,750. Finally, using the chapter's estimate of 4.1 hours of writing, compute the dollar return per hour of documentation against (a) the unrecovered cost and (b) the full gap.
C4. Convert vague entries to evidentiary ones. Rewrite each of these as a proper impact statement. Invent the specific detail you need, but every rewrite must contain all five elements.

- "Owner walked the job and had some comments."
For each, state in one line what the rewritten version is worth that the original is not.
C5. Design the meeting architecture. For a $12M, 60,000 SF, two-story municipal library on a design-bid-build lump sum contract with a 16-month schedule, design the complete meeting architecture. Give purpose, attendees, frequency, duration, owner, and output for each meeting. Justify every meeting you include and every one you leave out. Then write the OAC agenda with time boxes summing to 45 minutes.
C6. Write the confirming letter. The owner's facilities director stops your superintendent in the parking lot on a Friday at 4:20 p.m. and says: "The board approved the covered walkway extension this morning — go ahead and start Monday, we'll get you a number next week." Write the confirming letter, all six sections, sent that evening. Then list the four other things that must exist before the first hour of work is charged.
C7. Run the retrieval test. Take any documentation system you have access to — a class project, a work project, or the folder structure in §26.11.1. Pick a random past date. Time yourself finding: the daily record for that date, the weather, any correspondence sent or received, and any photographs. Report the time. Then identify the single change that would most reduce it.
Part D — Judgment and Ethics ⭐⭐⭐
D1. Your project engineer writes a daily report entry stating that a subcontractor's crew was idle for four hours because your own superintendent failed to release the area. It is accurate. Your superintendent asks you to soften it. What do you do, what do you say to the superintendent, and what is the actual cost of each option — including the cost of softening it?
D2. You realize in month nine that the architect's minutes have contained a favorable-to-you error for the last three months: they repeatedly record the owner accepting a scope item you believe is actually yours. You never objected because the error benefits you. What are your obligations here — contractual, professional, and practical? Consider what happens when the error is eventually noticed.
D3. A claims consultant reviewing your file suggests that you "go back and fill in" the impact statements on forty daily reports from eight months ago, using invoices and schedule data to reconstruct what happened. The facts would be accurate. Where is the line, and what exactly is wrong with crossing it? Distinguish clearly between (a) altering existing records, (b) creating new records dated today that analyze old data, and (c) leaving the gap alone.
D4. Your company's policy requires all project communication on the company platform. Your superintendent and the owner's rep have been texting on personal phones for fourteen months because it is faster and the platform is slow. You discover this. What do you do about the past, and what do you do about the future? What do you not do?
D5. You are the contractor and you take the OAC minutes. You have an opportunity, week after week, to phrase entries in ways that quietly favor Kestrel — technically accurate, subtly slanted. Describe the short-term benefit and the specific long-term mechanism by which this destroys more value than it creates. Then state the standard you would actually apply.
Part M — Mixed and Interleaved Practice ⭐⭐–⭐⭐⭐
M1. With Chapter 25. An RFI issued 14 work days ago is unanswered and is now idling a crew. Show the complete chain of documents this single event should generate: the RFI log entry, the daily report impact statement, the OAC decision log entry, the meeting minute entry, the notice letter, and the eventual change or claim reference. State which document does what, and which single one, if omitted, breaks the chain.
M2. With Chapter 19 and Chapter 20. You have twelve weeks of daily reports showing a subcontractor's actual headcount against the manpower curve they committed to at kickoff. Describe how you would roll the daily reports up into an early-warning report, what threshold would trigger a conversation, what would trigger a written notice, and how the same data supports a productivity analysis. Then explain why the hours column matters as much as the headcount column.
M3. With Chapter 18 and Chapter 29. Your contract gives excusable but non-compensable weather days. You have 14 days of adverse weather in a season. Using the Northgate rates ($5,500/CD liquidated damages, $5,150/CD extended general conditions), compute what you gain and what you absorb if all 14 are granted. Then list, field by field, exactly what your daily reports must have said on each of those 14 days for the claim to succeed.
M4. With Chapter 17 and Chapter 31. Trace the complete chain from the unasked preconstruction question ("who has authority to direct the contractor?") to the $43,650 Kestrel absorbed on CO #14. Identify every point in the chain where a different action would have changed the outcome, and estimate the time cost of each intervention. Which intervention has the best ratio?
M5. With Chapter 23 and Chapter 24. The near-miss spike in weeks 34 through 36 on Northgate — 22 near-misses against a running average of about 2.5 per week — sat unread in the daily reports. Design the reporting mechanism that would have surfaced it: what gets counted, how often, who looks at it, where it appears, and what threshold triggers what action. Then explain why the same mechanism is a quality control as well as a safety control.
M6. With Chapter 14 and Chapter 33. A delay analyst needs to establish that a specific activity was the controlling activity on a specific date and that it was stopped by a specific cause. Which fields of the daily report support each of those two proofs? What would you add to your daily report form to make this connection automatic rather than reconstructed?
Part E — Research and Extension ⭐⭐⭐⭐
E1. Obtain a real set of general conditions — AIA A201, ConsensusDocs, EJCDC, or a public agency's standard general conditions, all of which are readily available. Find and read: the progress-meeting requirement, the provision governing meeting minutes (if any), the changes clause and its written-directive mechanism, and the notice provision. Write a one-page summary of what that specific document requires, and note where it is silent — silence is often more consequential than the text. Do not generalize your findings to other contracts.
E2. Find three real daily construction report forms — from a general contractor's public materials, a state DOT's standard forms, or a construction management software vendor's template. Compare the fields against §26.6.1. What does each include that the others do not? Which one would you actually use, and what would you add to it? Pay particular attention to whether any of them has a genuine impact-statement field or merely a "remarks" box.
E3. Interview a project manager, superintendent, or owner's representative with at least ten years of experience. Ask three questions: what does your daily report actually contain; when was the last time a project record decided something; and what do you wish you had written down. Write up what you learn in 500 words, and note specifically where their practice differs from this chapter — then decide who you think is right, and why.
