Sources are described by what they are and who publishes them rather than by edition or section number, because editions change and section numbering changes with them. Go to the publishing body's own site for the current version, and check what your jurisdiction has actually adopted before you rely on anything here.


Safety and regulation

OSHA, 29 CFR Part 1926 — Safety and Health Regulations for Construction. The regulation itself, free from the U.S. Department of Labor. For this chapter, the two subparts that matter most are Subpart P (Excavations) and Subpart R (Steel Erection). Read the competent-person duties, the protective-system triggers, the egress requirements, and — in Subpart R — the controlling contractor's obligation to provide a firm, graded, drained area for crane operation. Alongside the regulation, OSHA publishes free "Focus Four" outreach and training materials on falls, struck-by, caught-in/between, and electrocution, including trenching quick cards written for field use rather than for lawyers; they make a good backbone for a toolbox-talk program. For everyone who supervises physical work. Read the actual regulatory text, not a summary of it.

NIOSH construction safety and health research. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health publishes research and prevention materials on construction hazards, including trench collapse and falls from height. Where OSHA tells you what is required, NIOSH tends to tell you what actually injures people and why. For safety managers designing a hazard-prevention system rather than a compliance checklist.


Concrete, formwork, and reinforcement

ACI 318 — Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete, American Concrete Institute. The design and acceptance standard your specification will reference. As a construction manager you are not designing to it, but you should know how it treats acceptance by cylinder testing and what the investigation sequence looks like when a strength test comes in low. For project engineers and anyone who has ever had to explain a 3,180 psi break.

ACI 347 — Guide to Formwork for Concrete. The reference behind formwork design, removal, shoring, and reshoring. Read it before you plan a floor cycle, and read it again before you tell a crew to strip early. For anyone running a cast-in-place frame.

ACI guidance on hot-weather and cold-weather concreting. ACI publishes separate practices for placing concrete in hot and cold conditions, covering the mechanisms — accelerated setting and plastic shrinkage cracking in heat; arrested hydration and freezing damage in cold — along with mitigation measures, protection durations, and temperature requirements. Pair it with ASTM International's materials and testing standards, which your specifications invoke for concrete, aggregates, soils, and steel, including the procedures for making and curing test cylinders and for field density testing. You will rarely read an ASTM standard cover to cover; you should always know which one your spec cites and what the testing agency is therefore required to do. For superintendents planning a pour in July or December, and for anyone reviewing a testing report.


Steel and structural systems

AISC — American Institute of Steel Construction. AISC publishes the standards and accepted practices for structural steel design, fabrication, and erection, including the tolerances that produce the anchor-bolt fit-up problems described in this chapter. Its free technical resources, design guides, and Q&A material are unusually good, and its explanations of the fabrication and erection process are written for people who have to schedule it. For anyone managing a steel package — and specifically for understanding the shop-drawing-to-mill-order chain.

WoodWorks and the mass timber technical literature. WoodWorks and comparable wood-council technical programs publish free project galleries, construction guides, and — most usefully for a construction manager — moisture management guidance for mass timber during construction. That is the document to read before your first CLT project. For project managers taking on mass timber for the first time.

The International Code Council and the International Building Code. The IBC defines construction types, height and area limits, fire-resistance requirements, and the mass-timber construction types that have reshaped what is buildable in wood. Two cautions: editions change substantively, and your jurisdiction's adopted edition plus local amendments is what governs, not the newest publication. For anyone evaluating a structural system against code before design is locked.


Estimating, production, and equipment

RSMeans construction cost data. The most widely used published cost reference in North America, organized by CSI MasterFormat, with productivity rates and crew compositions alongside unit costs. Use it for order-of-magnitude checks and for the crew and productivity data, which travels better than the pricing. Always confirm against local subcontractor quotes — regional variation is large and real. For estimators and anyone sanity-checking a number.

Equipment manufacturers' performance and production handbooks. The major earthmoving equipment manufacturers publish detailed handbooks covering cycle times, bucket fill factors, rolling resistance, grade resistance, swell and shrinkage factors by material, and fleet-matching methods. They are written to sell machines, but the production arithmetic is the industry's common language and is more thorough than most textbooks. For anyone estimating or managing earthwork — this is where the truck-cycle math in §8.3 comes from.


Ground and site

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's construction stormwater program materials. EPA publishes plain-language guidance on stormwater pollution prevention plans, erosion and sediment controls, inspection requirements, and recordkeeping for construction sites. Note that permitting is generally administered by the states, so check your state's program for the requirements that actually apply to your site. For anyone responsible for a SWPPP — which should be a named person, not "the earthwork sub."

Common Ground Alliance and the 811 damage-prevention system. The industry's damage-prevention resources explain the locate-request process, the uniform color code, tolerance zones, and safe-excavation practices around marked facilities. Rules on ticket validity, tolerance-zone width, and hand-digging requirements vary by state, so read your state's one-call law alongside the national guidance. For field engineers and superintendents scheduling any underground work.

Published geotechnical reports in public bid packages. Not a book — a habit. State transportation departments, school districts, and municipalities routinely publish complete geotechnical reports as part of public bid documents. Download two or three, read the boring logs, and practice the overlay exercise from this chapter on somebody else's site before you have to do it on your own. It is the cheapest professional training available, and there is a great deal of it. For everyone. Start this week.
